Audit AI-generated code as you would any other proposed change, but add explicit checks for provenance, copied or closely matched code, and suggested dependencies. Review the diff and behavior, verify package identities and licenses, run the project’s tests and security checks, and require a qualified human to approve the change before it reaches production. Similarity scanners, vulnerability tools, and AI explanations can help, but none proves that code is original, license-compliant, or secure.
What an audit needs to establish
An AI-assisted change can be wrong, insecure, based on a dependency that should not be trusted, or similar to third-party code with license obligations. Those are separate questions, so a single scan or a note that code was AI-generated is not a complete audit.
- Behavior: Does the change do what the project requires, including at its boundaries and failure cases?
- Security: Does it introduce vulnerabilities, expose secrets, or create unsafe behavior in the project’s context?
- Licensing and provenance: Could it reproduce third-party material, and are the source, tool terms, and any applicable license obligations understood?
- Dependencies: Are any new packages real, trustworthy, maintained, appropriate, and acceptable under the project’s security and licensing policies?
- Accountability: Can reviewers see what tool assisted, what was checked, and who approved the change?
Keep these questions distinct in review records. A clean dependency scan does not settle code similarity; a similarity match does not establish a vulnerability; and passing tests do not establish that third-party license obligations have been met.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to audit AI-generated code before merging
Start with the actual source-control diff, not the tool’s description of its work. The UK Home Office advises applying the same security scrutiny to AI-assisted code as to human-written code, and its organizational guidance requires human review and approval before production. GitHub likewise cautions that AI code review can miss problems, produce false positives, or suggest insecure changes; generated suggestions still need careful review and testing. UK Home Office engineering guidance and GitHub responsible-use guidance describe those expectations.

- Identify the change and its context. Record which tool assisted and, where available, its version. Determine the intended behavior, affected components, data handled, permissions used, and the consequences of failure. Treat generated code as untrusted until reviewed.
- Inspect the complete diff. Read every changed file, including generated configuration, tests, scripts, and dependency manifests. Follow calls into surrounding code. Do not approve code solely because its explanation sounds plausible or because an AI reviewer approved it.
- Check behavior and edge cases. Run the project’s normal tests and add or adjust tests for important new behavior. Examine invalid input, errors, authorization boundaries, resource limits, and other failure cases relevant to the change. Confirm tests exercise the actual behavior rather than merely reproducing the generated implementation.
- Review security properties. Use the security checks the project applies to comparable changes, then investigate findings in context. Consider what data and capabilities the code can access, what happens when its assumptions fail, and the impact if it behaves incorrectly.
- Audit dependencies and possible third-party code. Verify every new package independently, and investigate potential source matches and their license terms. These checks answer different questions and should be recorded separately.
- Resolve findings and obtain human approval. Require a reviewer with the relevant technical and security context to assess the change and its evidence. Do not merge unresolved high-impact issues merely because an automated check is green.
- Retain review evidence. Keep the provenance, findings, test results, decisions, and approval in the project’s normal source-control and review records, subject to organizational disclosure and retention policies.
The level of scrutiny should reflect risk. A small documentation change and code that handles credentials, permissions, sensitive data, or production infrastructure do not have the same potential impact. The review process should make that impact visible rather than treating “AI-generated” as a risk rating by itself.
How to check whether generated code copied open-source code
Look for code that appears to match public source repositories, then examine the match itself, its repository, and the license. A similarity result is a lead for investigation, not a verdict that a violation occurred: reviewers need to understand what was matched, whether the material is actually included in the change, and what obligations apply to the intended use.
GitHub describes a Copilot code-referencing feature that searches public GitHub repositories for matches and can show repository and license information. Its coverage is bounded by what it can search and recognize. The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) notes that scanners detect known open-source code; a scan that finds no match cannot establish that code is original or license-clear. See GitHub’s feature information and ASF Generative Tooling Guidance.

Investigate a match rather than stopping at the alert
- Locate the matched lines in the proposed change and determine whether they are substantial or relevant to the implementation.
- Inspect the identified repository and the license attached to the material. Confirm that the license information pertains to the matched code, not merely another part of the repository.
- Check whether the project can meet the applicable conditions for including or adapting that material. Follow the project’s legal and open-source review process when the obligations or provenance are unclear.
- Record the match, the source and license information shown, the reviewer’s decision, and any action taken, such as removing or replacing the material or meeting applicable obligations.
Do not infer that code is free of obligations because it came from a model, was rewritten, or produced no scanner alert. The relevant question is whether the change includes third-party material and, if so, what terms and facts govern its use.
Review tool terms and jurisdictional questions
ASF recommends checking whether the AI tool’s terms grant rights broad enough for the contribution’s intended use, and whether third-party material is included with permission and in compliance with its license. Copyrightability of AI-generated output remains unsettled and can differ by jurisdiction; neither a similarity tool nor a general-purpose audit guide settles an individual legal question. Escalate material uncertainty through the organization’s legal or open-source review process rather than treating a scan as legal clearance.
How to verify AI-suggested dependencies
A generated import or package name is a proposal, not proof that a dependency exists or is safe. The OpenSSF’s security guide describes package hallucination: a model may suggest a package that does not exist, and an attacker could publish a malicious package under that name. Verify the package’s identity and source before adding it; do not install a name simply because generated code imports it.

Review each proposed package
- Identity and source: Confirm the exact package name and that it comes from the intended registry and maintainer. Look for similarly named packages that could be confused with the intended one.
- Version and vulnerability status: Select and record a specific version, and check it against the project’s vulnerability review process. A package name alone is not enough to identify the code being introduced.
- License: Check the package’s license and whether its terms fit the project’s distribution and use.
- Maintenance and suitability: Assess whether the package is maintained and appropriate for the project’s architecture, security needs, and existing dependency strategy.
- Necessity: Decide whether the dependency is needed at all. Avoid accepting it merely because the generated implementation chose it.
OpenSSF recommends using a package manager that records specific versions instead of copying reused code from other packages. The Home Office also calls for managing security, licensing, maintainability, and architectural risks in AI-introduced dependencies. See the OpenSSF security-focused guide and Home Office guidance.
Use an SBOM for inventory, not as a substitute for review
A software bill of materials (SBOM) can help identify which libraries are present when a vulnerability becomes known. It is useful for dependency inventory and response, but it does not determine whether source code is similar to third-party material or whether its license obligations have been satisfied. Keep dependency inventory, vulnerability review, and source-level license investigation as complementary controls.
Which checks answer which questions?
Choose checks by the evidence they produce and the question they can answer. Coverage differs: pattern-based security tools, known-repository matching, and dependency inventories do not understand every project-specific behavior or legal context.

| Check | Useful evidence | What it does not establish on its own |
|---|---|---|
| Code and security review | Human assessment of the diff, behavior, project context, and security impact | That every defect or vulnerability has been found |
| Tests | Whether the tested behavior meets specified expectations under the tested conditions | That untested cases are correct, secure, or license-compliant |
| Security scanning | Findings within the scanner’s supported checks and coverage | That the change is free of vulnerabilities or fits the project’s full threat context |
| Code-reference or similarity check | Potential matches and, where available, repository and license details | That no third-party material exists when there is no match, or that a match is automatically improper |
| Dependency review and inventory | Package identity, version, license, vulnerability information, and a record of included libraries | That application source is original or that behavior is secure |
| Provenance and review records | Which tool assisted and how the change was assessed and approved | That the technical or legal review was correct merely because it was recorded |
For a product-specific example, GitHub documents that its cloud agent uses CodeQL analysis, secret scanning, and checks of newly introduced dependencies against the GitHub Advisory Database for malware advisories and high- or critical-CVSS-rated vulnerabilities. It also documents human review before merge, session logs, and controls for agent branches and workflow execution. These are features of that cloud-agent setup, not a guarantee that every issue will be detected or that other tools provide the same controls. Details are in GitHub’s cloud-agent security documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What provenance and approval records should you keep?
Record AI assistance in the project’s normal review trail so that future maintainers can understand how the change was produced and assessed. ASF offers example commit-message tokens such as Generated-by: <Name of Tool> <Version> and Co-authored-by: <Name of Tool> <Version>. Use a disclosure format that fits the project’s policies; the examples are not a universal requirement.
The UK Home Office recommends marking AI-assisted changes and using commits, pull requests, reviews, and validation records to show how they were assessed. GitHub documents links from cloud-agent commits to session logs and audit-log events available to administrators. Organizations should follow their own disclosure and retention rules when deciding what to preserve. Relevant guidance: ASF, the Home Office, and GitHub.

- Tool name and version, where known, and the scope of its assistance.
- The reviewed diff and links to relevant commits or pull-request records.
- Tests and security checks run, their findings, and how material findings were resolved or accepted.
- Dependency identity and versions, plus any inventory the project retains.
- Potential source matches, the license review outcome, and any required follow-up.
- Reviewer and approver decisions, including the rationale for unresolved residual risk where policy allows acceptance.
Records make a review traceable; they do not replace the judgment the review requires. Keep them in established systems rather than relying on a transient chat or generation session as the only account of the change.
Common audit mistakes to avoid
- Approving from the prompt or explanation: A model’s summary is not a substitute for reading the resulting diff and tracing its behavior.
- Treating a green scan as a clean bill of health: Tools have scope and coverage limits. Review what evidence they produced and what they were not designed to assess.
- Assuming no similarity result means no license issue: A scanner can only report matches it recognizes. Investigate credible concerns even when automated matching is silent.
- Installing a suggested package without verifying it: Confirm exact identity, source, version, license, maintenance, vulnerability status, and architectural fit before acceptance.
- Using an SBOM as a source-code originality check: It inventories components; it does not establish that implementation code is free of copied material.
- Recording AI use without recording review: Provenance helps explain the change, while tests, findings, decisions, and human approval show how it was evaluated.
- Assuming legal questions have a universal answer: Tool terms, license conditions, jurisdiction, and the facts of any included third-party material matter. Refer uncertain cases to the appropriate organizational process.
The OpenSSF guide reproduces a figure from package-hallucination research by Joseph Spracklen and coauthors: 245,000 malicious code packages were discovered in open-source software repositories in 2023. That is a reported count of malicious packages in that research, not a rate for AI-generated code or a current annual count. It is a reason to verify dependencies, not evidence that any particular generated suggestion is malicious. See the OpenSSF guide.
Set a repeatable team policy
A reliable audit is easier when contributors and reviewers know what evidence a change needs before it arrives for approval. Define the policy in the context of the project’s existing engineering controls rather than making a different standard for AI code that is either automatically lighter or automatically sufficient.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Specify how contributors disclose AI assistance and what provenance information to retain.
- Require review of the complete diff, normal tests, and the security checks appropriate to the change’s risk.
- Require independent approval for new dependencies, including identity, version, licensing, maintenance, vulnerability status, and architectural fit.
- Define how potential third-party code matches are investigated, documented, and escalated.
- Set who may accept residual risk and how that decision is recorded.
- Preserve review and validation evidence using the organization’s retention and disclosure rules.
These controls reflect the practical limits of automation: code-reference checks can identify leads, scanners can flag supported patterns, and inventories can support dependency response, but a human reviewer still has to judge the change and approve it for its intended use.
