Audit monetized pages by checking representative templates on mobile and desktop, reviewing real-user Core Web Vitals, inspecting ad placements and overlays, and making targeted changes before you measure again. Treat the results as evidence about usability and performance—not as a score that guarantees better rankings. Google describes page experience as a collection of considerations rather than one ranking signal, and says relevant content can still rank when its page experience is subpar. Google’s page-experience guidance and Search Central’s explanation of its role are clear on that distinction.
What an ads and page-experience audit can—and cannot—tell you
A useful audit identifies problems that make a page slow, difficult to use, visually unstable, or hard to access because of advertising. It helps you decide what to fix and whether the changes improved the experience. It cannot predict a ranking change from an audit score.
Google says its core ranking systems consider a variety of signals that align with overall page experience; there is no single page-experience signal. Relevance remains central. A page with strong Core Web Vitals is not guaranteed a top position, although page experience may matter more when several pages offer similarly helpful content. That is why an audit should inform decisions about the site, not replace work on the quality and relevance of its content. Google explains this relationship in its Search Central blog.
Keep three kinds of evidence separate as you work:
- Field performance: how real users’ page experiences appear in Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report.
- Diagnostics: page-level investigation with tools such as PageSpeed Insights and Lighthouse.
- Direct inspection: what a person actually encounters when opening the page, including ad placement, overlays, and whether the main content is accessible.
Each answers a different question. A lab diagnostic can help investigate a page, but it is not a substitute for field data or for looking at the page as a reader would. Google lists Search Console, PageSpeed Insights, and Lighthouse among the available ways to assess or investigate these issues. See Google’s page-experience guidance.

Step 1: Choose pages and templates that represent the site
Do not begin by auditing only the homepage or a single page that happens to be easy to test. Select important landing pages and examples of the site’s main article templates. If separate templates or layouts serve different types of content, include examples of each that matter to visitors and search performance. The purpose is to find both page-specific defects and problems shared by a template.
Build a focused sample
- Include the landing pages that are important to the site, along with representative pages using each important article template.
- Include pages with different ad layouts or overlay behavior so the audit covers the experiences readers actually encounter.
- Record the page and template for each observation. If several sample pages share the same defect, investigate the common layout or implementation rather than treating each as an unrelated problem.
Check mobile and desktop separately
Open every sample in both mobile and desktop layouts. An ad that leaves the main text easy to reach on a wide screen may dominate a phone’s first screen; a prompt that is easy to dismiss with a mouse may be difficult to manage on a small display. Google specifically asks site owners to consider whether content displays well on mobile devices. Do not assume that a desktop check represents the mobile experience, or vice versa. Google’s self-assessment questions include both mobile presentation and whether excessive ads distract from or interfere with main content.
This sample is an inspection plan, not a claim that every page will have the same experience. Google says its core ranking systems generally assess page experience at the page level, while some assessments also operate site-wide. A shared template issue can therefore be important to fix, but do not infer that one sampled page’s results describe every URL. Start in Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report. Review the page groups and the issues reported for them, then map affected pages back to their templates. Field reporting helps show where real-user performance is a concern; it is a different kind of evidence from a one-off diagnostic of a single page.

- Open the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console.
- Review the reported mobile and desktop information, noting affected page groups and the issue associated with each group.
- Compare the example URLs or pages with your template list. Look for patterns shared by pages using the same layout or ad behavior.
- Choose a representative affected page for closer investigation with PageSpeed Insights or Lighthouse.
Use the report to decide where to investigate, not as a standalone verdict on every URL. A group can point toward a shared issue, but you still need to examine representative pages and the actual experience. Google identifies Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report as a way to assess field performance and PageSpeed Insights and Lighthouse as tools for investigating issues. Step 3: Interpret the current Core Web Vitals correctly
Google’s current Core Web Vitals are Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Interaction to Next Paint (INP), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS). They concern loading, responsiveness, and visual stability, respectively. The good-experience targets in Google’s documentation are LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP below 200 milliseconds, and CLS below 0.1. These are experience thresholds, not ranking guarantees. Google’s Core Web Vitals documentation recommends achieving good metrics for Search success and for a good user experience generally.

The last column is an inspection prompt, not a claim that a particular ad causes a metric issue. Use the field report to identify what is affected and diagnostics to investigate the sampled page. If an ad placement or another element appears to contribute to a layout shift, test a targeted change and then observe whether the relevant diagnostics change.
Do not collapse the three metrics into a vague “speed” score. A page may need investigation for loading, interaction, or stability for different reasons. Record which metric is involved and what page or group is affected so the eventual fix addresses the observed problem rather than a generic desire to make a score go up.

Step 4: Inspect the ad experience directly
There is no universal ad count in the cited Google guidance that defines when a page has too many ads. The practical test is whether ads distract from or interfere with the main content. Check the full page, with particular attention to the first screen on mobile and to how the reader reaches the promised material.
Questions to ask while viewing each sample
- Can a reader quickly identify the main content, or do ads dominate the initial view?
- Do ad placements interrupt the ability to read or use the page?
- Can the visitor reach the content described by the page without first dismissing a full-screen promotion, newsletter prompt, or app-install dialog?
- Does the layout remain understandable when viewed on a phone as well as a desktop?
These questions focus the audit on the actual reader experience instead of an unsupported numerical rule. Google’s page-experience self-assessment asks whether pages avoid excessive ads that distract from or interfere with main content. Read the self-assessment guidance.
Chrome UX Report ad metrics are experimental. They can help assess ad count, ad density, and ad weight, but should be treated as diagnostic information—not as a definitive ranking score or a replacement for viewing the page. Use them as one input when they are relevant to the question you are investigating. Google lists these metrics as an available way to assess ad experience. Google’s page-experience documentation.

Step 5: Check overlays for blocked access to content
Inspect full-screen promotions, newsletter prompts, app-install dialogs, and other interstitials on the sampled layouts. The key distinction is whether a reader can access the promised content immediately or must first dismiss an obstruction. A prominent message is not automatically the same as a full-page barrier; judge the size and behavior of the element in the context of the screen and the content it covers.

Google recommends small banners that preserve access to the content rather than full-page interstitials. Its guidance says: “Instead of full page interstitials, use banners that take up only a small fraction of the screen to grab your users’ attention.” Google’s interstitial guidance.

Test the behavior on the actual mobile and desktop layouts selected for the audit. A prompt may appear differently by screen size, and checking only a screenshot or one device size can miss whether content is genuinely accessible.
Step 6: Keep ad-policy checks separate from ranking analysis
Google’s Ad Experience report checks whether ad experiences meet the Better Ads Standards. It is a standalone policy-oriented tool, not a page-experience ranking factor. A result from that report may be useful for its own purpose, but it should not be presented as evidence that a page gained or lost ranking visibility. Google’s explanation of the Page Experience report states that the Ad Experience report was never part of page-experience ranking.

Once the inspection is complete, group observations by cause or shared template rather than making arbitrary changes to every page. Fix access barriers and clear usability problems as usability issues; investigate reported loading, responsiveness, or stability problems with the corresponding diagnostics. If one change could affect multiple templates, test it on a representative page before extending it.

- Blocked content: adjust an intrusive overlay so readers can reach the promised material without a full-screen dismissal step.
- Ads interfering with reading: revise placements that dominate or interrupt the main content, especially in the mobile layout.
- Reported Core Web Vitals issue: use the affected page group to identify a representative URL, then investigate the relevant metric with PageSpeed Insights or Lighthouse.
- Unclear or inconsistent evidence: inspect another representative page from the same template and compare field reporting with the direct layout and diagnostic results before changing the site broadly.
These are prioritization paths, not guaranteed fixes for particular metrics. Do not assume that changing an ad placement will improve a Core Web Vital or that improving a metric will produce a ranking gain. Make the smallest change that addresses the observed issue, then verify its effect.
Step 8: Deploy carefully and measure again
After changing ad placement, overlay behavior, or layout, revisit the same representative pages on mobile and desktop. Check whether the original usability problem is gone, then use the same diagnostic mix to evaluate the result: Search Console for field performance, PageSpeed Insights or Lighthouse for investigation, and direct inspection for the experience itself.

- Reopen the same page at the same layout sizes and confirm whether the content or interaction problem has changed.
- Use Lighthouse or PageSpeed Insights to investigate the relevant page-level issue again.
- Continue monitoring Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report for field performance across affected page groups.
- Monitor Search performance separately. If visibility changes, treat that movement as an observed outcome—not proof that a particular audit score caused it.
Google recommends good Core Web Vitals for the user experience and Search success, but does not promise that passing the targets will secure top rankings. The purpose of remeasurement is to verify the experience and performance change, not to claim a guaranteed search outcome. Google’s Core Web Vitals guidance.
A compact audit record to keep
For each issue, note only what will help you reproduce it and decide what to do next:
- Page and template: identify the sample URL and the layout it uses.
- Device layout: record whether you saw the issue on mobile, desktop, or both.
- Evidence type: distinguish a Search Console field report, a lab diagnostic, an ad-policy finding, or a direct observation.
- Observed problem: describe the affected metric, obstructive element, or interference with content.
- Change and follow-up: record the targeted modification and what happened when you checked the page and its diagnostics again.
This record makes it easier to distinguish a site-wide template problem from a defect on one page, and to avoid attributing search movement to a change without supporting evidence.
