The safest way to welcome Bogong moths and other nocturnal insects is to provide suitable, locally native flowers and a dark, pesticide-free habitat—not to install bright lights as bait. In Australia, plant choices must fit your region. Alpine Resorts Victoria lists Correa, eucalypts, tea tree and grevillea as native alpine flowers used by Bogong moths, while Sunshine Coast Botanic Garden suggests night-blooming pale flowers such as Eupomatia and Commersonia where they suit local conditions. Keep unnecessary lights off, protect dark routes through the garden, and leave visiting moths undisturbed.
Why a dark, planted garden helps
Bogong moths (Agrotis infusa) are native Australian migrants. They breed in inland areas, fly toward cool alpine regions in spring, shelter there through summer (aestivation), and return inland in autumn to reproduce. Their caterpillars, commonly called black cutworms, feed on seedlings of broad-leafed plants. Adults can be drawn to artificial lights, but that attraction is not a safe or reliable gardening strategy: a light can pull a moth away from migration, expose it to predators, exhaust it, or strand it near buildings.
Artificial light can also distract, repel or kill nocturnal pollinators, reduce pollen transport, alter predator–prey interactions and break up dark habitat. The Australian Government’s wildlife guidance therefore treats darkness and connected dark corridors as useful design features. A garden that offers flowers while retaining unlit areas supports natural movement instead of attempting to redirect it.
What to plant for Bogong moths
Use the alpine examples only where they fit
Alpine Resorts Victoria names Correa, eucalypts, tea tree and grevillea as native alpine flowers that attract Bogong moths. The recommendation is regional, not a universal Australian planting recipe. Before buying, check your local climate, soil, frost exposure, mature size and water needs with a native-plant nursery or local botanical garden. Prefer locally sourced (local-provenance) plants when they are available, because a plant that is native somewhere in Australia may still be poorly adapted to your site.

These plants are examples from Victorian alpine guidance, not a promise that every species will attract moths in every suburb. Flowering dates, weather and migration conditions all affect what insects visit.
Add night-blooming plants for moth pollinators generally
Sunshine Coast Botanic Garden recommends night-blooming, pale flowers such as Eupomatia and Commersonia for inviting pollinators after dark. Apply that Queensland advice only where those plants are ecologically appropriate. Ask a local native-plant specialist which night-blooming species occur naturally near you and which provide nectar during the months when adult moths are active.
Plant several species with different flowering periods rather than relying on a single mass of one plant. A diverse bed gives nocturnal insects more than one food source and reduces the chance that one failed flowering season leaves the garden without nectar. Keep some mature stems, leaf litter and low vegetation in quieter corners; these features create shelter without requiring artificial attractants.
How to choose plants without overpromising results
| Decision | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Regional suitability | Climate, soil, drainage, frost, heat and mature size | A plant recommendation from one part of Australia may fail or become unsuitable elsewhere. |
| Local provenance | Whether the nursery can supply plants sourced from your region | Locally adapted genetics can better match local conditions and conservation goals. |
| Night availability | Whether flowers offer nectar during the evening and at the time moths are present | Day-blooming plants alone may not provide food when nocturnal pollinators are active. |
| Flowering spread | Several species with different flowering periods | Staggered flowering creates a more dependable sequence of resources. |
| Habitat value | Dense foliage, undisturbed ground and a dark route between planted areas | Moths need places to move and rest, not just a brightly illuminated flower. |
Do not assume that a plant attractive to one moth is equally useful to every night-flying insect. Local natural-history groups, botanic gardens and native nurseries can help match plants to the moths and other pollinators in your area.
Lighting: the most important harm-reduction step
Turn off lights you do not need
Zoos Victoria identifies two reported Bogong migration periods—September–December and February–April—and recommends switching off unnecessary outdoor lights at night during those windows. These are guidance periods, not a guarantee that moths will be present on every night or in every location. If local observations show activity outside them, keep the same low-light approach.

Start with a simple audit: walk around after dark and list every lamp that is decorative, aimed into vegetation, left on by habit or visible from open sky. Turn those fixtures off. Use a timer, motion sensor or manual switch for genuinely necessary lights, and shorten the time they operate. The objective is less total light and more uninterrupted darkness, not a brighter “moth station.”
Keep necessary lighting contained
- Shield fixtures so light points toward the ground and the path that must be lit, rather than into trees or across the garden.
- Use the lowest brightness that safely serves the task.
- Do not illuminate flowering beds, ponds, tree canopies or known insect resting places.
- Preserve a continuous unlit strip between garden areas, fences and nearby habitat where practical.
- Check that indoor light is not spilling through large windows onto the garden during migration periods.
The Australian Government describes light pollution as a source of habitat fragmentation for nocturnal wildlife. A dark corridor can therefore be more valuable than an additional planted bed that is lit all night.

Garden practices that prevent accidental harm
Avoid insecticides
Zoos Victoria, Alpine Resorts Victoria and Georges River Council all advise avoiding insecticides around Bogong moths. Do not spray a moth, its resting place or a flowering plant being visited at night. Broad-spectrum products can affect insects that were not the intended target, including pollinators and predators. If a plant has a pest problem, first identify the pest and ask a local horticultural adviser about non-chemical controls that will not contaminate flowers or shelter.
Leave visiting moths alone
A moth resting on a wall, trunk or porch does not need to be fed, watered or moved. Keep pets and children from handling it, and avoid sweeping or hosing it away. Disturbance can force it to expend energy needed for migration or shelter. Observe from a distance and photograph it only if you can do so without touching it or shining a bright light directly at it.
Protect the whole night-time community
Do not remove every fallen leaf, stem or patch of dense ground cover simply to make the garden look tidy. Retaining some undisturbed structure gives insects places to rest and keeps the dark–light contrast that wildlife uses. Balance this with normal fire, access and plant-health requirements for your site; the aim is a safe refuge, not unmanaged hazards.

How to recognise a possible Bogong moth
The Australian Museum records Bogong moths across southern Australia, including Tasmania, in urban areas, forests and woodlands. Zoos Victoria lists these visible cues for a suspected adult:
Recommended Free Tools
- Body length of approximately 2.5–3.5 cm.
- A dark stripe on each wing.
- A circular spot near the top of each stripe and a kidney-shaped spot near the bottom; the two spots are the same colour.
Identification from a quick glimpse can be uncertain, especially in dim light. You do not need to catch the insect to report it. Photograph it in place, avoid a flash if possible, and submit the image to Zoos Victoria’s Moth Tracker. The project says its team verifies sightings and shares them with experts, partners and government. An uncertain sighting is acceptable for verification, so do not claim a species identification when the markings are unclear.
What to do if a moth enters your house
Bogong moths are harmless to people and pets, according to a Georges River Council notice dated 7 October 2026. The least stressful way to help one leave is to reduce indoor light and provide a single route toward outdoors.
- Close doors to other rooms so the moth is not driven deeper into the house.
- Switch off indoor lights, especially lights near the ceiling and windows.
- Leave one outdoor light on near an open exit, while keeping other outdoor lights off.
- Wait quietly and give the moth time to move toward the opening.
- If it remains, place a clear glass or container over it, slide a sheet of paper or cardboard underneath, and carry it outside. Set the container down in a dark, sheltered spot and let the moth crawl out.
Do not grab the wings, spray the insect, or trap it in a sun-heated container. If the moth is already resting safely outdoors, leaving it where it is is preferable to handling it.
A practical, low-impact garden plan
1. Map the existing darkness
Before planting or rewiring, observe the garden after sunset. Mark areas that stay dark, places where lights shine into foliage, and routes that connect the garden to trees, reserves or neighbouring habitat. The map reveals where a small lighting change may help more than another plant purchase.

2. Match plants to the site
Take a list of sun exposure, soil drainage, frost and available space to a local native nursery. In Victorian alpine settings, ask about Correa, eucalypts, tea tree and grevillea of local provenance. In suitable Queensland settings, ask whether Eupomatia or Commersonia is appropriate. Elsewhere, request locally native night-blooming or moth-visited alternatives rather than importing a regional list unchanged.
3. Create layers and flowering continuity
Combine ground-level cover, shrubs and appropriately placed trees, leaving some quiet vegetation between beds. Choose species whose flowering periods overlap or follow one another. This supplies nectar over a longer season and gives insects options when weather damages one flush of flowers.
4. Remove unnecessary light
Switch off decorative fixtures, shield essential lamps, lower brightness and use controls that limit duration. During the September–December and February–April periods identified by Zoos Victoria, be especially strict about outdoor lighting that serves no safety or access purpose.
5. Stop chemical exposure
Adopt observation and targeted, non-chemical responses before considering any treatment. Never spray a flowering plant while moths are visiting. If intervention is unavoidable for a serious plant-health problem, obtain site-specific advice about timing and methods that protect non-target insects.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches6. Record, do not manipulate
Keep a simple note of date, weather, plant in flower and approximate insect appearance. Submit photographs of suspected Bogong moths to Moth Tracker rather than collecting specimens. Records can help reveal local timing without changing the insects’ behaviour.

Common approaches that can backfire
Installing a bright “moth light”
Adult Bogong moths can be attracted to lights, but attraction is not the same as support. A bright lamp can draw insects from a dark route, concentrate them around a hazard and increase exposure to predators. There is no evidence in the guidance cited here that a home light improves migration or population recovery. Use darkness as the intervention.
Copying a plant list from another climate
Correa, eucalypts, tea tree and grevillea are examples from alpine Victorian advice; Eupomatia and Commersonia come from a Queensland botanic-garden context. Soil, rainfall, temperature and local ecology differ across Australia. A plant that survives in a pot or nursery may still be inappropriate for your garden or local habitat.
Assuming every large brown moth is a Bogong moth
Size and wing marks can suggest a Bogong moth but cannot guarantee identification. Use the listed cues, photograph the insect without handling it and submit uncertain sightings for verification.
Clearing all “mess” from the garden
Removing every stem and leaf can eliminate resting cover. Retain a managed, safe portion of natural structure while keeping paths clear and meeting local fire-safety requirements.
How serious is the Bogong moth decline?
Alpine Resorts Victoria reports a 99.5% decline between 2018 and 2021 and says the species was added to the IUCN Red List as endangered in 2021. The figure describes that reported 2018–2021 period; it is not a new population measurement for 2026. It is still a strong reason to reduce avoidable pressure, particularly artificial light, insecticides and disturbance, while supporting monitoring through verified sightings.
A single garden cannot redirect migration, restore a population or guarantee a visit. Weather, breeding success, regional habitat and the moths’ natural route determine when and where they appear. The realistic goal is to make your property a safer stopover if moths pass through, while improving conditions for other nocturnal insects as well.
Quick checklist for each night
- Are decorative and unnecessary outdoor lights off?
- Are essential lights shielded, dim and limited to the time needed?
- Is at least one dark corridor preserved through the garden?
- Are locally appropriate native flowers in bloom or being established?
- Have insecticides been kept away from visiting insects and flowers?
- Are resting moths being left undisturbed?
- If a moth is indoors, can one outdoor light and an open exit guide it out?
- Can a clear photograph be submitted to Moth Tracker without capturing the insect?
What success looks like
Success is not a guaranteed swarm at a light. It is a garden with nectar plants suited to its region, flowering resources available at night, shelter that is not constantly disturbed and lighting that leaves wildlife’s routes dark. Those choices help Bogong moths when they naturally arrive and avoid imposing a new hazard when they do not.
