Vanilla Left 4 Dead 2 cannot permanently pin a specific survivor model to a specific player. To do that on a dedicated server, install SourceMod and add a compatible survivor-model plugin. The most direct option is a plugin that exposes sm_setmodel <player> <survivor name> to administrators. A player-facing alternative is Survivor Chat Select 2, which lets players choose models or lets administrators force them, subject to its configuration and campaign limits.
Compatibility is the important qualification. The commonly cited Set Survivor Models plugin dates from an older forum thread, and a report says its source may no longer compile on newer or beta SourceMod branches. Test on a private server before deploying it to a public installation.

What you can and cannot do in an unmodified server
Left 4 Dead 2 assigns survivor characters through the game’s normal roster and campaign logic. The stock server does not provide a supported setting that says “always give this player this survivor.” A player may receive different survivors as the lobby, campaign, or round changes.
That limitation is separate from changing a survivor’s appearance for everyone. Per-player assignment requires a server-side extension that can intercept survivor selection and apply a model to an individual client. In practice, that means SourceMod plus a plugin designed for Left 4 Dead 2 survivor models.

- Without SourceMod: you can use the game’s normal survivor selection, but not a reliable player-to-model mapping.
- With SourceMod and a model plugin: an administrator can assign a named survivor model, and some plugins can let players choose or be forced into models.
- With custom models: the model must be compatible with the plugin and game build; Survivor Chat Select 2 documentation notes that most L4D2 Workshop models need to be recompiled before use.
The plugin changes the model assignment; it does not create a new survivor voice set, animations, weapons, or campaign scripting. Those systems may still follow the underlying survivor identity, so test the result in the campaigns and modes you actually run.
Choose the plugin before changing the server
The available approaches differ in who controls the model, how restrictions work, and how much confidence you can have in current SourceMod compatibility.

For a small private server where only an administrator needs to assign models, start by evaluating Set Survivor Models. For a public server where players need an in-game menu, evaluate Survivor Chat Select 2 first. Do not install several model plugins at the same time until you understand which one owns survivor selection; overlapping hooks can produce unpredictable results.
Prepare a safe test environment
Make a copy of the server configuration and test on a private instance or an empty test server. Model plugins can affect every connected player, and a bad compile or incompatible dependency may prevent the plugin from loading without changing the base game itself.
Check the server and campaign scope
- Confirm that the server is running Left 4 Dead 2 rather than a Left 4 Dead 1 installation.
- Record which L4D2 campaigns and modes you will test. Survivor Chat Select 2’s documented roster support is eight survivors on L4D2 campaigns and four on L4D1 campaigns.
- Decide whether players should choose their own model, whether administrators should force models, or whether only a fixed group of administrators should have access.
- Keep a known-good copy of the server’s plugin and configuration files so you can remove the model plugin quickly if a map will not start or models fail to load.
Install SourceMod first
SourceMod is a prerequisite, not an optional enhancement. Install a current SourceMod build using its official installation procedure, then start the server and confirm that SourceMod itself loads before adding a survivor plugin. A plugin that does not compile or load cannot assign models, even if its command names are correct.
Because the Set Survivor Models discussion is old, do not assume that a binary compiled for an earlier SourceMod branch is compatible with the branch you use today. If the plugin page provides a source file, compile it with the compiler associated with your installed SourceMod branch and read any compiler errors rather than forcing the resulting binary into production.

Add one model plugin
- Download the plugin binary or source from its current project page. Verify that the download is for Left 4 Dead 2 and that any required extensions are listed.
- Install the plugin using that project’s documented SourceMod procedure. Do not copy configuration files from a different plugin just because the names look similar.
- Restart the server or use the documented plugin reload method.
- Check the SourceMod plugin list and server log for a successful load. A missing dependency, an invalid binary, or a compile failure must be fixed before you test commands.
- Join with one administrator account and one ordinary player account. This separates command permissions from model behavior.
The exact file paths and cvar names can vary by plugin version. Use the current instructions shipped with the plugin rather than assuming that an older forum post still matches your SourceMod build.
Assign a survivor with Set Survivor Models
Set Survivor Models exposes the administrator command sm_setmodel <player> <survivor name>. The command requires the CHEATS flag, so a user who can otherwise moderate the server may still be denied if that flag is not present.
Administrator procedure
- Join the server with an account that has the plugin’s required administrator permissions, including the CHEATS flag.
- Open the SourceMod console or chat command interface.
- Enter
sm_setmodel <player> <survivor name>, replacing<player>with the target player and<survivor name>with the exact survivor identifier accepted by the plugin. - Confirm the result in game. If the target remains on the old appearance, check the server log and plugin status before issuing the command repeatedly.
- Repeat the command after a round or map transition if the plugin does not retain the assignment. Do not assume persistence unless the plugin’s current documentation explicitly describes it.
Use the plugin’s accepted survivor names exactly. The available command reference does not establish a universal spelling list, and guessing a name can produce an “unknown survivor” error or silently leave the current model unchanged.
Optional player self-selection
The plugin also documents a player command, sm_setmymodel. Whether ordinary players can use it is controlled by a cvar. Find the cvar name and allowed values in the version of the plugin you installed; the name is not established in the available command reference, so do not invent one in your server configuration.

If you enable self-selection, test it with a non-admin account. Confirm that players can change only their own model, that the command does not grant access to sm_setmodel, and that the setting behaves as intended when a new round begins.
Important age and compile warning
The Set Survivor Models forum discussion dates to 2009. A later report says the .sp source no longer compiles on newer or beta SourceMod branches. Treat a successful download as insufficient evidence of compatibility. If compilation fails, record the first error, check whether the project has an updated branch, and choose a maintained alternative rather than disabling compiler checks.

Use Survivor Chat Select 2 for menus and forced models
Survivor Chat Select 2 is designed for in-game model selection. It can let players choose a model, allow administrators to force a model, and restrict access with administrator flags. Its documentation also describes forced models that do not rely on cookies, which is useful when you want a server rule to apply without depending on a player’s saved client preference.
Player-choice workflow
- Install and load Survivor Chat Select 2 according to its current plugin instructions.
- Join an L4D2 campaign with a normal player account and open the plugin’s in-game chat selection interface.
- Choose a survivor model from the entries the plugin exposes.
- Move through a complete round and a map transition during testing. Note whether the plugin reapplies the choice or returns the player to the game’s normal assignment.
- Repeat with an administrator account to verify that restricted entries and forced selections behave differently from ordinary choices.
The exact chat trigger and menu wording are version-specific. Use the labels shown by the installed plugin rather than publishing an assumed command that may belong to another release.
Administrator-forced workflow
- Give the administrator account only the flag required by the plugin’s configuration.
- Use the plugin’s force-model control to target a player or survivor slot.
- Reconnect the target or begin a new round if the plugin’s instructions require a respawn for the model to appear.
- Verify the result with a second player who does not have administrator privileges.
Survivor Chat Select 2 supports eight survivors on L4D2 campaigns and four on L4D1 campaigns. If you move the plugin between game versions, do not expect the L4D2 roster behavior to carry over unchanged.
Custom models: why recompilation matters
Installing a model file is not automatically enough. Survivor Chat Select 2 documentation states that most L4D2 Workshop models must be recompiled before they can be used by the plugin. Recompilation changes the asset so it conforms to the game and plugin’s expected survivor structure; it is not the same as merely renaming a file.
Before adding a custom model
- Confirm that the model is licensed for server distribution and that every connected client can obtain the required files through your normal server delivery method.
- Check whether the plugin documentation identifies a required skeleton, animation set, or compilation toolchain.
- Keep the original model separate from the compiled output so you can roll back without losing the source asset.
- Test one model at a time. A missing material or malformed animation is much easier to identify when no other custom asset changed simultaneously.
Symptoms of an incompatible custom model
- The plugin menu lists the model, but the player appears as a default survivor.
- The player sees a missing-model or checkerboard appearance.
- The server log reports a model or animation load error.
- The model works in one campaign but fails when a different survivor slot or animation is used.
When any of these occurs, remove the custom entry and retest with a stock model. If stock models work, the problem is in the custom asset or its compilation, not in the basic SourceMod command path.
Permissions and server policy
Per-player model assignment is a moderation feature as much as a cosmetic feature. Decide who can change another player’s model and document that policy for your administrators.

Set Survivor Models’ explicit CHEATS requirement is a permission boundary, not a recommendation to grant every moderator that flag. Give the smallest administrator access that accomplishes your policy, and verify it with a test account before opening the server to players.

The command is unknown
Confirm that the plugin loaded successfully and that you typed the command exactly, including the sm_ prefix. If the plugin failed to compile or load, the command will not exist. A version of Set Survivor Models built for an older SourceMod branch may be the cause.
The command is denied
For Set Survivor Models, check the administrator’s CHEATS flag first. For Survivor Chat Select 2, check the configured administrator-flag restriction and whether you are using a player menu from an account that is allowed to use it.
The model does not change
Test a stock survivor model and confirm that the target player is valid. Some plugins apply a change at spawn or round start rather than immediately; follow the plugin’s documented refresh behavior. If stock models work but a custom model does not, recheck the custom model’s compilation and required files.
The plugin works on L4D2 but not L4D1
Survivor Chat Select 2 documents different roster support: eight survivors for L4D2 campaigns and four for L4D1 campaigns. Use the correct game and campaign assumptions when testing, and do not treat an L4D1 result as proof that the L4D2 configuration is wrong.
The plugin worked before a SourceMod update
Review the plugin’s current compatibility notes and recompile from source with the matching compiler if one is provided. The reported Set Survivor Models compile issue on newer or beta branches makes this a known risk. If the project has no compatible update, remove it and evaluate another option instead of running an unverified binary.

Two plugins produce conflicting models
Disable every model plugin except the one under test, restart the server, and verify behavior again. Once the single-plugin path works, add other extensions one at a time only if their documentation explicitly describes compatibility.
A practical decision checklist
- Need only an administrator command? Evaluate Set Survivor Models, but compile and test it against your current SourceMod branch first.
- Need a player menu? Evaluate Survivor Chat Select 2 and test its administrator flags and menu behavior with separate accounts.
- Need Workshop models? Plan for recompilation; Survivor Chat Select 2’s documentation says most L4D2 Workshop models require it.
- Need L4D1 support as well? Verify the four-survivor limit rather than assuming the L4D2 eight-survivor behavior applies.
- Considering an unverified collection or extension? Treat Jackzmc’s collection and the reported L4D2Tools pairing as unconfirmed until the current project documentation proves that the required model-assignment plugin and dependencies are present.
- Going public? Test map changes, respawns, reconnects, permissions, and a stock model before allowing custom assets or player self-selection.
What a successful setup looks like
A working installation has SourceMod loaded, exactly one tested survivor-model plugin managing the assignment, and permissions that match your server policy. An administrator can target a valid player with the documented command or menu, the target changes to the selected survivor model, and a normal player cannot change someone else’s model unless you intentionally enabled that capability. Custom models are tested separately after they have been compiled in the form the plugin expects.
