Your financial runway is the number of months your household can keep paying essential bills after a layoff. Estimate it with a dated cash-flow plan—not your old salary or a single savings balance: total the cash you can actually use, add only dependable after-tax income arriving on known dates, subtract essential expenses and near-term one-time bills, then revisit the result as benefits, insurance and bills change.

This is a planning estimate, not a promise. Unemployment eligibility, taxes, health premiums, household expenses and retirement-plan rules depend on your state and circumstances. Verify the figures with the relevant state agency, insurer, plan administrator, lender and tax authority.

What “financial runway” means after a layoff

Runway answers a practical question: if employment income stopped today, how long could your household meet essential obligations without relying on new debt or uncertain money?

The useful unit is a dated cash-flow forecast. A balance in a savings account can look reassuring while bills, taxes, a coverage change or a delayed benefit claim reduce what is genuinely available. Conversely, a severance payment or approved benefit can extend runway, but only after its net amount and arrival date are clear.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) describes unemployment as “typically a weekly payment of a few hundred dollars” and says, “Unemployment rarely replaces all your income.” Those are broad descriptions, not a benefit quote or a universal savings target. Your state program and work history determine the actual amount and timing.

Start with a dated inventory of usable cash

List resources the household can access for essential spending. Record the current balance, any restrictions, the expected after-tax amount and the date money should arrive. Include a spouse or partner’s dependable contribution when finances are shared.

Separate available money from possible money

  • Include now: checking and savings balances, cash on hand and other liquid funds that can be transferred without a penalty or long delay.
  • Include when confirmed: severance, a final paycheck, approved unemployment payments, or another contributor’s income with a documented amount and schedule.
  • Do not count as received: an unemployment claim that has not been approved, a payment with no confirmed date, a tax refund you have not filed for, a bonus that is discretionary, or credit-card capacity.
  • Flag restrictions: account holds, early-withdrawal penalties, transfer limits, or money reserved for a legal, medical or housing obligation.

A simple inventory table keeps assumptions visible:

Resource Amount to record Date and certainty Tax or access note
Liquid savings and checking Current transferable balance Available now Exclude money you cannot use for household bills
Severance Expected net amount Payment date stated by employer Gross severance is taxable; estimate withholding or later tax
Final wages and leave payout Expected net amount Payroll date Accumulated vacation or sick pay is taxable
Unemployment compensation Approved net benefit State payment schedule Do not treat a pending claim as cash already received
Household contributor Reliable net contribution Normal pay date Use only income that is expected to continue

The IRS explains that severance, unemployment compensation and accumulated leave payments are taxable. A withholding rate that looks adequate on a paycheck may not settle your full liability, so leave room for tax due or estimated payments.

Build an essential-expense baseline

Use the amount required to keep people housed, fed, insured and able to work—not the former monthly salary. Review several months of bank and card statements so annual, quarterly and irregular bills do not disappear from the plan.

List essential recurring costs

  • Rent or mortgage, property tax and required homeowners or renters insurance
  • Electricity, gas, water, phone and internet needed for work, school or essential services
  • Groceries and required household supplies
  • Transportation, fuel, public transit, vehicle insurance and minimum maintenance
  • Health, prescription, dental and other necessary insurance premiums
  • Minimum payments on loans, credit cards, taxes and legally required obligations
  • Childcare, eldercare, medication and other costs that allow the household to function

Mark costs that can be reduced, paused or cancelled

Make a second list for discretionary or adjustable spending: dining out, travel, entertainment, optional memberships, extra debt payments and upgrades. Do not silently assume every line can reach zero; note the realistic reduced amount and any cancellation fee.

Add one-time and transition bills

Near-term items can shorten the first month even when the monthly baseline looks manageable. Include a deductible, vehicle repair, school payment, annual insurance premium, moving cost, tax payment, or a health-plan premium that begins when employer coverage ends. Enter each bill on its actual due date.

Expense type How to handle it
Essential monthly Use the amount needed each month after realistic reductions
Reducible monthly Record the lower amount you can sustain and the date the change starts
One-time near-term Enter separately on its due date; do not divide it across months unless you will actually save for it
Uncertain or optional Keep out of the essential runway, but track it in a separate scenario

Use net amounts and align income with bill dates

Runway depends on spendable cash. Convert severance, leave payouts and unemployment to estimated net amounts after withholding or likely tax payments. The IRS advises making sure enough tax is withheld or making estimated tax payments when needed.

Then place each inflow and outflow on a calendar. A household can have enough money for the month in total and still overdraft if a mortgage drafts before severance arrives. List automatic withdrawals, minimum payments and benefit premiums so timing problems are visible.

A practical cash-flow worksheet

Date Item Inflow Outflow Running cash Status
Layoff date Transferable savings Enter current balance Starting cash Available
Known payroll date Final pay or severance Estimated net Prior balance plus net inflow Confirmed or pending
Each due date Housing, utilities and minimum obligations Actual bill Prior balance minus bill Essential
State payment date Unemployment Approved net amount Prior balance plus benefit Do not count before approval
Coverage start date Health premium or deductible Actual amount Prior balance minus cost Verify with insurer

Calculate the runway estimate

A useful planning calculation is:

Runway in months = usable liquid resources ÷ (essential monthly outflow − dependable monthly net income)

This is an editorial cash-flow calculation synthesized from CFPB guidance, not a government-prescribed formula. Use it only when the denominator is positive and the income is dependable. Adjust the result for one-time bills, payment timing, taxes, changing premiums and benefits that may end.

Illustrative example

Suppose a household has $12,000 in accessible savings. It expects $4,800 of severance after estimated tax on April 15, and its approved unemployment benefit is estimated at $1,200 net per month beginning May 10. Essential monthly outflow is $4,000. The recurring monthly burn after the benefit is $2,800, so $16,800 of resources divided by $2,800 suggests about six months.

That six-month figure is not the household’s forecast by itself. If a $1,500 health-premium or deductible bill is due before the severance arrives, subtract it on that date. If the unemployment claim is still pending, exclude the $1,200 until approval. If taxes are likely to be under-withheld, reserve additional cash. A dated ledger can therefore show a tighter first month than the simple division suggests.

When the formula needs a different treatment

  • No dependable income: divide usable resources by essential monthly outflow, after subtracting one-time obligations from resources.
  • Income exceeds essential outflow: the household may not be drawing down cash, but keep a reserve for taxes, coverage changes and irregular bills.
  • Highly variable costs: use a conservative monthly amount based on actual statements and model a high-cost month separately.
  • Benefits with an end date: calculate one runway period while the benefit is paid and another after it ends.
  • Multiple earners: map each person’s pay and possible job-loss date instead of assuming the other income is permanent.

Account for unemployment without overestimating it

File promptly with the state where the work was performed, following that agency’s instructions. Eligibility, waiting periods, documentation, weekly certification and payment timing vary by state. Keep confirmation numbers and a calendar reminder for required certifications.

For planning, use three stages:

  1. Pending: record the claim and possible amount, but count neither as available cash nor dependable income.
  2. Approved but unpaid: enter the confirmed payment amount and expected date, while keeping a buffer for processing delays.
  3. Paid: update the ledger with the actual net deposit and revise future months if the amount differs.

Unemployment compensation is taxable. Decide whether available withholding is sufficient or whether estimated payments are needed; do not spend the gross benefit as if it were net.

Choose health coverage before employer coverage ends

A layoff can remove a benefit as well as a paycheck. Compare coverage options using total premium and likely out-of-pocket cost, start and end dates, enrollment deadlines, eligibility, provider network and the household’s prescriptions or treatment needs.

Option Questions to verify Runway effect
COBRA continuation When can coverage start, how long can it continue, what is the full premium, and are there election and payment deadlines? May preserve the existing network but can increase monthly outflow because the individual pays the cost
Spouse’s or partner’s plan Is a special enrollment window available, when does it begin, and what premium and network apply? Compare the added premium and deductible with other choices
Marketplace coverage What enrollment deadline, premium, subsidy estimate, deductible and provider network apply? Include the first premium and any coverage gap in the cash calendar
Government program Does household income and state eligibility qualify, and when would coverage begin? Confirm approval and effective date before removing another policy

The CFPB and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration identify these routes, but they do not establish your personal price or eligibility. Ask the insurer, employer benefits office or relevant government program for written dates and amounts. Keep coverage active until the replacement is confirmed.

Act early when the forecast shows a shortfall

Do not wait for a missed payment if the calendar shows that cash will be tight. Contact lenders, landlords, utilities, insurers and other billers before the due date and ask what relief is available.

Prioritize the first conversations

  1. Protect housing, utilities, food, medication, insurance and transportation needed for work or job search.
  2. Call lenders and card issuers to ask about a due-date change, temporary forbearance, an affordable repayment plan or fee relief. Ask how interest, reporting and future payments will work.
  3. Review automatic withdrawals. Pause or reschedule optional drafts and make sure essential drafts will not trigger an overdraft.
  4. Contact service providers about lower tiers, payment arrangements or cancellation dates before a charge posts.
  5. Track every agreement, representative, date and promised document in the cash-flow file.

Relief is not automatically free: deferred payments can accrue interest or create a larger later bill. Compare the total cost and the date normal payments resume.

Decide carefully before using retirement money

Retirement accounts can extend runway, but they trade a current problem for taxes, penalties and lost future growth. The CFPB says pretax 401(k) withdrawals are taxable and may face an additional 10% tax before age 59½ unless an exception applies. Plan-specific rules and personal circumstances determine what actually applies.

Before requesting a distribution, obtain the plan’s summary and ask the administrator:

Revisit the plan on a fixed schedule

A runway estimate becomes useful when it is maintained. Update it at least weekly during the first month and whenever an inflow, bill or benefit changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Replace estimates with actual deposits and payments.
  • Move pending benefits to confirmed only after approval and a payment date.
  • Recalculate health premiums, deductibles and coverage end dates.
  • Set aside money for tax that is not covered by withholding.
  • Check automatic payments and the next 30 days of due dates.
  • Run a conservative case with lower income, a delayed payment or a higher essential bill.

Keep the file simple enough to use: a spreadsheet, paper worksheet or bill calendar works. The CFPB recommends worksheets and a bill calendar; no paid product is required.

Common runway mistakes and their fixes

Using the old salary as the budget

Why it fails: salary is a gross annual figure, while runway depends on essential spending and net cash timing.

Fix: build the expense baseline from actual bills and use after-tax inflows.

Counting an unapproved benefit

Why it fails: eligibility, processing and payment dates are uncertain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: keep pending benefits in a separate scenario until the state confirms them.
