After a layoff, do not try to pay every bill equally or simply attack the highest interest rate. First determine how much cash and income your household can actually access, list every obligation and deadline, then protect the payments whose nonpayment could threaten housing, utilities, health, safety, family care, transportation for work, or legal standing. Contact providers before a missed payment and apply promptly for unemployment and other assistance.

This U.S.-focused guide gives you a repeatable method. It is educational rather than individualized financial or legal advice: the right order depends on your housing, dependents, insurance, transportation, location, available cash and the consequences attached to each account.

Start with a short-term cash snapshot

Your first objective is to see how long available money can cover essentials. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recommends reviewing debts, savings, severance and household income after an unexpected job loss. Its Unexpected job loss guidance also provides a cash-flow worksheet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record cash you can use now. Include checking and savings balances, while separating money that is already committed to a rent, mortgage, tax or insurance payment.
  2. List incoming money and its timing. Note final wages, unused-leave payment if applicable, severance, unemployment you may receive, and any income from other household members. Write the expected date, not just the amount.
  3. Separate essential from deferrable spending. Essential spending generally keeps people housed, fed, healthy, insured, connected to work or caring for dependents. Mark subscriptions, discretionary shopping and other expenses that could be paused.
  4. Calculate a near-term runway. Compare usable cash plus reliable incoming money with essential bills due before the next expected income. A simple week-by-week view exposes a shortfall earlier than a monthly total.

Do not treat unemployment or severance as guaranteed until you know the amount and payment schedule. Unemployment benefits rarely replace all prior income, and the CFPB notes that payments are taxable income. Set aside money for any tax obligation rather than assuming the full deposit is spendable.

Inventory every bill before choosing an order

A complete list prevents a small automatic debit from consuming money needed for rent or food. The CFPB’s Prioritizing bills worksheet and bill-calendar approach are useful paper or spreadsheet templates.

For each obligation, capture:

  • Provider and account type
  • Current amount due and minimum payment
  • Due date, grace period and whether it is already overdue
  • Whether payment is automatic, and the linked bank account
  • What happens after a missed payment: a late fee, service shutoff, loss of coverage, repossession, eviction or foreclosure action, collections, credit reporting or a legal consequence
  • The provider’s hardship, assistance or payment-plan contact method

Put all due dates on one calendar. A cluster of payments in one week can create an avoidable overdraft even when the monthly total appears manageable. Include irregular essentials such as insurance premiums, prescriptions, school or childcare costs, vehicle registration and minimum deposits needed to keep utilities connected.

Prioritize by consequence, timing and alternatives

There is no universal “pay this first” list. Instead, compare each bill using the factors below. CFPB materials identify housing, utilities, insurance, transportation and other costs needed to work, plus legal or family obligations, as categories that may require special attention.

Decision factor Question to ask Why it changes the decision
Immediate safety and housing Could nonpayment threaten shelter, essential utilities, food, health or family care? Loss of a home, heat, water, medication access or necessary care can cause immediate harm.
Irreversibility and deadline Will a shutoff, eviction or foreclosure process, repossession, coverage cancellation or court deadline begin? Some consequences become harder and more expensive to reverse after a specific date.
Ability to earn or seek work Does the expense preserve transportation, childcare, communication, tools or another requirement for employment? Protecting the ability to obtain income can be more valuable than preserving a lower-risk account.
Available alternatives Can the provider offer a hardship plan, split payment, due-date change, waiver or public assistance? An account with workable assistance may be less urgent than one with no immediate substitute.
Longer-term cost What fees, interest, credit reporting, collections or legal costs follow? These costs matter, but they generally come after immediate safety and housing risks are assessed.

Use the answers to create a short list of payments that must be protected, a second list that needs a negotiated arrangement, and a third list that can be paused or paid later. Revisit the lists whenever your cash, benefit decision or housing situation changes. A high-interest credit card is not automatically more urgent than an overdue utility or a car needed to reach work.

Protect housing, utilities and essential coverage

Renters

Contact the landlord or property manager before rent is late. Explain the layoff, state the amount and date you can pay, and ask whether a split payment, temporary schedule or other written arrangement is available. Do not rely on a verbal promise; save the message or request written confirmation. The CFPB’s help for renters page directs people to local programs, and dialing 211 can help identify available rent and utility resources.

Homeowners

If a mortgage payment may be missed, call the servicer promptly and ask what assistance or loss-mitigation options apply to your loan. Ask which documents, deadlines and trial-payment terms are required. Waiting until several payments are overdue can reduce the time available to evaluate options.

Utilities

Call the electric, gas, water, heating, phone or internet provider as soon as a payment is at risk. Ask about a due-date change, payment arrangement, fee waiver, arrears program or protection available in your location. Keep the confirmation number and the exact date of the next required payment. If an essential service is already scheduled for shutoff, state that immediately and ask what payment prevents it.

Health and other essential insurance

Protect coverage that prevents a medical, liability or transportation disaster. Ask the insurer how a missed premium affects the policy, whether a grace period applies and whether a lower-cost or public option is available. A cancellation can be more damaging than a late fee, so confirm the consequence and deadline rather than guessing.

Preserve the ability to work or search for work

Transportation, childcare, a working phone, internet access and required tools may be income-enabling expenses. Include fuel, transit fares, vehicle insurance, maintenance needed for safe operation and childcare in the essential budget when they are necessary for interviews, training or employment. If a vehicle loan is unaffordable, contact the lender before repossession risk develops and ask what temporary options exist; also assess whether a less costly transportation alternative is realistic.

Do not cut a cost merely because it is not labeled “housing.” Losing a phone line could prevent an employer from reaching you, and losing childcare could prevent you from accepting work. Conversely, an optional premium service that does not support health, housing or income can usually be paused while you stabilize cash flow.

Contact every provider before missing a payment

Early communication gives a creditor or service provider time to offer terms and gives you a record of your request. CFPB guidance recommends explaining the job loss, what you can afford, when normal payments might resume and the specific change you want.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use the number on a statement or the provider’s official website, not a message from an unknown caller.
  2. State that you lost your job, the date income changed and that you are trying to prevent a missed payment.
  3. Give a realistic amount and date you can pay. Do not promise a payment that would leave you unable to cover housing, food or utilities.
  4. Ask for a temporary payment plan, a due-date change, a split payment, a fee waiver, a lower minimum or another hardship option that the provider actually offers.
  5. Ask how the arrangement affects interest, late fees, credit reporting, automatic payments and the total balance.
  6. Request the terms in writing. Record the representative’s name or identification, the date, confirmation number and next action.

If the first representative cannot help, ask for the hardship or loss-mitigation department. Continue documenting calls and messages. A payment arrangement is not complete until you know the amount, due date and duration.

What to do about credit-card bills

For the question “What should I do if I can’t pay my credit card bills?”, contact the card company before the minimum is late. The CFPB says, “Many card companies are willing to work with you to change your payment if you’re facing a financial emergency.” This wording appears in its page last reviewed September 2, 2026: What should I do if I can’t pay my credit card bills?

Tell the issuer why the minimum is unaffordable, how much you can pay now, when you expect normal payments might resume and what temporary payment and duration you are requesting. Ask whether interest continues, whether the account will be frozen, how the arrangement is reported to credit bureaus and what happens if you cannot meet the modified terms. Keep using the card only if doing so does not worsen the shortfall.

Do not drain money needed for shelter, utilities, food, insurance or work transportation merely to keep an unsecured card current. A card’s fees, interest and credit consequences matter, but their urgency must be weighed against immediate risks.

Apply for unemployment and other support

Unemployment insurance

File with the relevant state agency if you may be eligible. The CFPB says people laid off or whose jobs were eliminated can generally qualify, while voluntary resignation or misconduct can affect eligibility. State rules determine eligibility, application steps, weekly amount and payment timing, so verify details with your state agency. Continue any required certifications and keep records of applications and communications. Remember that unemployment payments are taxable income.

Health coverage

Check the coverage options available after employer insurance ends and compare deadlines, premiums, deductibles and effective dates. A gap in coverage can expose your household to a large bill, so put enrollment tasks on the calendar and ask the relevant official program or insurer which date controls.

Rent, utilities and local aid

Use the CFPB’s rent and bills assistance guidance and call 211 for local resources. Programs, funding and eligibility vary by location; apply before an eviction, shutoff or other crisis when possible. Ask whether an application pauses enforcement or whether you must separately negotiate with the provider.

Federal student loans

Borrowers with federal student loans may have income-driven repayment options based on income and family size. Check current eligibility, required certification and terms with your servicer or the official federal program source. Ask how an application, recertification date or processing period affects the next payment instead of assuming it is automatically suspended.

Control automatic payments and recurring spending

Review subscriptions, memberships, app renewals, buy-now-pay-later debits and every automatic bill. Cancel or pause expenses you no longer need, but do not assume canceling a service cancels an outstanding balance. If an automatic debit could overdraw the account or conflict with a negotiated arrangement, contact the biller and bank quickly to learn the required stop-payment process and deadlines. Save confirmation numbers and monitor the account afterward.

Keep a small transaction log during the first weeks after the layoff. Compare posted withdrawals with your bill calendar, because a forgotten annual renewal or duplicate debit can consume money reserved for an essential payment. Ask the bank about overdraft options and fees, but treat fee avoidance as a cash-flow tactic rather than a substitute for negotiating the underlying bill.

Build a workable payment plan for each week

Once providers respond, assign available cash to the obligations with the most serious and time-sensitive consequences. Reserve money for food, medication and necessary transportation before distributing funds to lower-risk debts. Then schedule negotiated payments on the dates you can actually meet.

  1. Mark essential living and work costs that are due before the next reliable income.
  2. Set aside the amount needed for any confirmed arrangement or legal deadline.
  3. Use remaining funds for obligations with escalating fees, collections or credit impact, in the order their consequences and timing warrant.
  4. Review the plan when an unemployment decision, severance payment, assistance approval or new job changes your cash position.

When money is insufficient for all essentials, ask providers and local agencies for help immediately rather than silently skipping several accounts. Keep copies of leases, notices, insurance documents, loan statements, benefit applications and hardship agreements in one secure folder.

When credit counseling may help—and what to avoid

The CFPB recommends considering credit counseling if managing credit-card bills feels unmanageable. A reputable nonprofit counselor can help organize debts and discuss options, but ask before enrolling:

  • What services are provided and what they cost
  • Whether fees are monthly, one-time or voluntary
  • How the program changes payment dates, interest or account access
  • Whether you can leave without additional charges
  • What effect participation may have on credit reporting

Be cautious of debt-relief companies that charge upfront, guarantee a specific result or tell you to stop communicating with creditors without explaining the consequences. Never pay a fee merely for a promise to eliminate debt. Verify the organization, written terms and complaint process before sharing bank or identity information.

Common mistakes after a layoff

  • Paying the smallest bill first by habit: size alone does not reveal the consequence of nonpayment.
  • Using retirement or emergency money without a plan: first negotiate dates and assistance so you know how much cash is truly required.
  • Waiting for a collection notice: providers often have more flexibility before an account becomes seriously delinquent.
  • Ignoring taxes on benefits: unemployment is taxable income according to the CFPB.
  • Assuming a verbal promise is binding: request written hardship terms and check that the next debit matches them.
  • Stopping every automatic payment at once: some cancellations can create service loss or contractual problems; identify each debit first.
  • Applying for help only after a shutoff or eviction filing: local programs may have deadlines and limited funds.

A repeatable checklist for the next 48 hours

  1. Check checking and savings balances and list final pay, severance and household income.
  2. Write down essential spending for food, housing, utilities, health, insurance, transportation and care.
  3. Inventory every bill, minimum, due date, overdue status, automatic debit and consequence.
  4. Circle payments with immediate safety, housing, coverage, work-access or legal implications.
  5. File an unemployment claim if potentially eligible and calendar required follow-ups.
  6. Call the landlord, mortgage servicer, utility, insurers and other high-consequence providers before their deadlines.
  7. Call card issuers and other creditors with a specific affordable amount and requested duration.
  8. Check health coverage, rent and utility assistance, 211 resources and student-loan options.
  9. Pause unnecessary recurring spending and prevent overdrafts from overlooked automatic payments.
