Organisations cannot assess workplace AI risk until they can see which tools employees use and what they use them for. That is the central message from Oliver Simonnet, CultureAI’s Lead Cybersecurity Researcher, in an October 5, 2026 interview with IT Security Guru. His warning about deploying AI and “hoping for the best” describes rushed adoption, not a measured finding that most organisations behave this way.
Why visibility is the first step in workplace AI security
Simonnet argues that security teams need to know which AI tools are in use and how employees use them before they can credibly assess exposure. A list of officially approved applications may not tell the whole story: employees can experiment with public tools, while AI features may also be embedded in software already used at work.
That makes discovery a prerequisite for proportionate governance. Without a view of sanctioned, unapproved and embedded AI use, an organisation may miss where information is going or where controls are needed. Simonnet puts it plainly: “Having visibility of what AI is being used, and how it’s being used, is key.”

Simonnet’s explanation is that people often supply more context to a conversational model because they expect a more useful answer. The back-and-forth format can also feel informal, potentially lowering a user’s guard compared with entering terms into a search engine. In a work setting, that context might include sensitive information sent to a third-party service through an employee’s account.

This is Simonnet’s account of user behavior, not a conclusion supported in the interview by a cited psychological study. The practical security concern remains straightforward: employees may disclose information without recognizing what should not be shared or where their prompt is processed.
Enable experimentation with governance, not blanket bans
Simonnet’s recommendation is not to block every AI tool by default. He calls for visibility, controls and processes that let organisations make informed decisions about use. That approach can preserve legitimate experimentation while setting boundaries around data and higher-risk applications.

Questions to resolve before deployment
- Which AI tools and features are employees already using, including unsanctioned and embedded services?
- What information may employees enter, and what controls can detect or restrict sensitive prompts?
- Who approves a use case, monitors it and responds when the use or risk changes?
- Does the deployment need additional containment, or would local deployment better meet the organisation’s requirements?
- What evidence can the organisation retain to show how access and controls are managed?
Simonnet urges restraint before deployment and says organisations should consider agent containment or local deployment where appropriate. These are choices to evaluate against the use case and the organisation’s requirements, not universal prescriptions that the interview establishes for every system.
AI agents introduce additional security questions
In a separate April 10, 2026 article, Simonnet identifies prompt injection, supply-chain trust, identity and credential management, and failures of model judgement as agent-security concerns. He recommends layered defence, human oversight and continuous monitoring. These points come from CultureAI’s own article, rather than independent testing of agent systems.

For an organisation evaluating an agent, the implication is to consider more than the model’s answers. The review should account for what the agent can access, which credentials it uses, what external components it relies on, and how people can supervise actions or detect unexpected behavior.
Organisations are responsible while standards evolve
Simonnet sees a role for industry standards and says legislation could follow if voluntary industry action proves inadequate. He also stresses that the eventual direction is uncertain. In the meantime, he says, “organisations are responsible for making sure they do everything right.”

That is a call for organisations to manage their own deployments now, rather than wait for a final regulatory framework. It is not a claim that a particular future law or standard is settled.

How to assess an AI security offering
The interview and CultureAI’s descriptions of its own platform suggest useful evaluation questions, not evidence that one vendor performs better than another. CultureAI’s platform information is company material, not an independent product assessment.

- Controls: Can it apply relevant restrictions to prompts or sensitive data?
- Agents: Does it address containment and the access or credentials an agent can use?
- Deployment: Can it meet the organisation’s deployment requirements?
- Audit evidence: Can teams document use, controls and oversight?
These criteria help turn a general concern about visibility into concrete requirements for a security review. They do not substitute for validating a product’s capabilities against the organisation’s own systems and policies.
