A North Sea gas field can support a data center only when independently verified gas deliverability, gas treatment, net firm generation, cooling, connectivity, reliability, emissions controls, environmental effects, consents and financing all work together for the facility’s operating life. A reserve estimate or a proposed megawatt figure is not enough.

The practical test is to compare the field’s sustainable, treated gas production with the data center’s complete electrical demand—not just its IT hall—and then prove that the offshore system can operate safely, maintainably and legally. The Earlham and Orwell concept shows how to frame that test, but its announced capacities remain company proposals rather than independent proof of feasibility.

Start with a system-level pass/fail test

Assess the field and data center as one integrated project. A field passes only if all of these conditions are demonstrated with project records:

  • An independently assessed recoverable resource and production curve support the required fuel rate throughout the planned operating period.
  • Gas composition, pressure and contaminants can be handled by equipment that fits the offshore location and power-plant specification.
  • Generation provides the data center’s net firm electrical requirement after treatment, carbon capture, cooling, auxiliaries, maintenance and redundancy loads.
  • The facility has dependable cooling, communications, access, fire protection, cyber security and emergency response.
  • Emissions, methane leakage, carbon capture, storage or reinjection and marine effects are quantified and permitted.
  • Capital cost, operating cost, schedule, customer commitments and financing remain viable under realistic outages, gas decline and weather constraints.

These are gates, not a checklist that can be averaged. A project with abundant gas but no reliable heat-rejection system, cable route or consent path is not data-center ready.

Define the boundary before calculating anything

Set the field life and duty cycle

State the intended commercial operating period, commissioning date, annual availability, planned maintenance and acceptable outage duration. Gas deliverability must be tested over that period, including pressure decline and the timing of wells, compression, processing modules and replacement equipment. A resource-in-place number does not establish a firm fuel supply.

Define the data center’s actual load

Specify initial IT load, expansion phases, rack density, storage and networking equipment, cooling power, lighting, pumps, control systems, accommodation, water systems and all other facility loads. Model normal, peak, start-up, maintenance and emergency conditions. Include the power required by gas treatment and carbon-capture equipment. The relevant comparison is:

Net firm generation available to the facility = gross generator output − gas treatment − carbon capture and compression − cooling − electrical auxiliaries − losses − reserve margin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Document whether the stated data-center capacity means IT load, total facility load or a marketing nameplate. Those quantities are not interchangeable.

Gate 1: Verify gas quantity, rate and quality

Require independent subsurface and production evidence

Obtain an independent resource assessment covering recoverable volumes, well deliverability, pressure, decline, development sequence and expected uptime. Ask for production profiles by month or year, not a single plateau number. The profile should show low-rate tail production, workovers, weather downtime and the effect of compression or water and carbon-dioxide removal.

Require the assumptions behind the estimate: reservoir model, recovery factor, well count, facility constraints and abandonment date. Stress-test lower recovery, delayed wells and unplanned outages. A field may contain enough molecules in aggregate yet fail to deliver the continuous flow needed by generators.

Characterise the gas completely

Obtain laboratory and well-test data for methane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, water, hydrogen sulfide, mercury, heavier hydrocarbons, oxygen, pressure, temperature and heating value. Map each contaminant to a treatment step, energy penalty, waste stream and maintenance requirement. Confirm that the treated gas meets the turbine or engine supplier’s fuel specification across the whole production decline.

Use the Earlham figure carefully

Orcadian Energy’s 16 July 2026 announcement says Earlham gas contains 49% carbon dioxide. That is a material design issue because separation, compression, dehydration and handling can consume substantial power and add equipment, maintenance and emissions. The announcement does not establish independent reserves, a production curve or a completed treatment design for Earlham and Orwell.

Gate 2: Convert fuel into firm usable power

Build an integrated energy balance

Model the complete chain from wellhead gas to data-center busbars. Include inlet separation, carbon-dioxide removal, dehydration, compression, generators, transformers, switchgear, carbon capture, carbon-dioxide compression, pumps, seawater systems and control equipment. Report gross output, auxiliary consumption, net output and heat rate for each operating point.

Run the model at design gas composition, degraded composition, minimum stable generation, maximum output and partial-plant operation. Show how net power changes as carbon-dioxide concentration rises or wells decline.

Size for reliability, not average demand

Data centers normally require maintainability and fault tolerance in addition to capacity. Define the required architecture—such as concurrent maintenance or fault tolerance—and show which generator, transformer, switchboard and cooling units can be offline without interrupting critical IT load. Model a generator trip, gas-treatment trip, capture-plant trip, subsea-cable fault, switchgear fault and loss of communications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Specify black-start capability, batteries, uninterruptible power systems, emergency generation and fuel reserves. If the design is islanded, explain how frequency, voltage, spinning reserve and load shedding are controlled when computing load changes suddenly. An announced electrical figure does not demonstrate any of these features.

Separate IT load from facility capacity

The Earlham concept describes a proposed 200 MW offshore data-center hall and says a proposed Earlham power station could supply approximately 200 MW of electrical power (IT load). Those are company concept figures. They do not show that the power station can deliver 200 MW to IT equipment after cooling, treatment, capture, redundancy and maintenance requirements, nor that the field can sustain the fuel rate.

Gate 3: Test emissions and carbon management

Calculate the full emissions balance

Quantify upstream methane leakage, flaring and venting, gas processing, combustion, carbon-capture energy use, residual emissions, carbon-dioxide transport, storage or reinjection, vessel activity and construction. State capture rate, operating envelope and expected downtime. A capture percentage without an energy penalty, transport route, storage complex and monitoring plan is not a complete carbon case.

Distinguish policy terminology from project performance

The UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s 2025 Overarching National Policy Statement for Energy (EN-1) states: “Low carbon infrastructure for the purposes of this policy means, for electricity generation, all onshore and offshore generation that does not involve fossil fuel combustion (that is, renewable generation, including anaerobic digestion plants provided they meet existing definitions of low carbon; and nuclear energy generation), as well as natural gas fired generation which is carbon capture ready.”

That is a policy definition for the stated purpose, not a finding that a particular gas project is low-carbon, consented or technically viable. EN-2 addresses relevant air-quality and greenhouse-gas assessment for onshore natural-gas generating infrastructure; it is not a complete offshore consent checklist.

Gate 4: Design the offshore data-center system

Cooling and heat rejection

Choose and quantify direct seawater cooling, closed-loop seawater systems, air cooling, heat pumps or hybrid designs. Calculate seawater intake, filtration, biofouling control, corrosion allowance, discharge temperature, plume effects and performance in warm or stormy conditions. Show what happens when intakes foul, pumps fail or seawater systems are unavailable.

Orcadian Energy describes seawater as a potential heat sink. That is a rationale to test with thermal, marine and maintenance studies, not a general offshore advantage. Compare pumping energy and corrosion exposure with the cost of conventional cooling equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connectivity and communications

Design physically diverse subsea and terrestrial fiber routes, landing stations, network equipment, latency targets, repair arrangements and cyber-security controls. A data center without resilient external connectivity may continue computing internally but fail its customers’ service-level requirements.

Access, safety and maintainability

Specify helicopter, vessel and weather-window assumptions; crew accommodation; lifting capacity; spare-parts inventory; workshops; hazardous-area zoning; fire and gas detection; evacuation; medical response; and coordination with offshore emergency services. Model how a failed transformer, turbine, pump or cooling module is replaced when sea state prevents access.

Physical resilience

Account for wind, waves, corrosion, salt contamination, lightning, flooding, collision risk, subsea hazards and simultaneous power-and-communications failures. Cyber security should cover operational technology, remote access, generator controls and data-center networks, with local fallback operation if shore links fail.

Gate 5: Compare the three main delivery configurations

Configuration What must be proved Typical decision questions
Gas exported to an onshore power station or customer Export pipeline capacity, gas quality, onshore processing, transmission access and onshore generation or customer demand. Does the field earn more by selling gas, and does onshore infrastructure offer better reliability and maintainability?
Offshore gas-to-power with electricity exported by cable Offshore generation and treatment, export-cable rating, landfall, grid connection, protection studies and cable-repair strategy. Do cable losses, marine installation and grid-connection queues outweigh the value of offshore generation?
Islanded offshore gas-to-power co-located with the data center Net firm generation, full redundancy, cooling, communications, access, carbon management, load control and an independent operating model. Can the project tolerate gas decline, generator outages and weather without a grid fallback?

Score every option against gas volume and deliverability, treatment complexity, net power, emissions, capture and storage assumptions, cable or grid needs, cooling, connectivity, access, marine effects, consent path, capital cost, operating cost, schedule, customer commitment and outage exposure. No option can be selected from general evidence alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gate 6: Establish the jurisdiction and consent path

Identify every regulated area

Map the field licence, platform location, export route, cable corridor, landfall, storage complex and any onshore substations. Determine which coastal state’s waters and authorities apply. North Sea projects can cross national boundaries, and a UK process does not substitute for requirements in Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands or another jurisdiction.

UK policy and marine requirements

For a UK proposal, EN-1 is the primary policy statement for relevant nationally significant energy applications within its scope. EN-5 covers electricity-network infrastructure and states that specified subsea cable activities in UK territorial waters, or associated with offshore generation, require marine licensing; the exact requirement depends on location and activity.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s Offshore Energy Strategic Environmental Assessment overview describes the strategic assessment programme for offshore oil and gas, gas and carbon-dioxide storage and related technologies. A project still needs a site-specific environmental baseline and impact assessment covering seabed disturbance, fisheries, shipping, protected habitats, noise, emissions, discharges and cumulative effects.

Use EN-2 only for the onshore natural-gas generation matters it addresses. Obtain jurisdiction-specific legal advice before fixing the project schedule or claiming that a consent route is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use foreign examples only as context

Norway’s data-center strategy says facilities particularly above 100 MW may require investment in regional or transmission networks depending on location and existing capacity. That is useful context for large-load planning, not a UK threshold and not a rule that applies automatically to an islanded installation.

Prove the commercial case

Build a whole-life model

Include wells, subsea and topsides modifications, gas treatment, generators, capture, compression, storage or reinjection, cooling, data-center modules, fiber, vessels, shore facilities, insurance, decommissioning and contingency. Operating costs should include fuel, chemicals, filters, corrosion control, rotating-equipment overhauls, crew, logistics, carbon monitoring, network services and replacement parts.

Stress-test gas-price exposure, carbon costs, capture downtime, lower data-center utilization, delayed construction, interest rates, weather downtime and a shorter field life. Compare those results with the value of reliable computing capacity and any avoided grid-transmission investment.

Secure customer and financing evidence

Require signed or otherwise credible customer commitments, contracted IT load, service-level requirements, financing conditions, equipment availability and a construction schedule. A concept capacity is not a customer commitment or an investment decision.

Understand the grid alternative

Ofgem reported that contracted electricity-demand offers increased from 41 GW in November 2024 to 125 GW in June 2025, with data centers driving much of the increase. The figures appeared in a July 2026 consultation announcement and describe connection-queue context, not realized demand or a guarantee that an offshore project will secure customers.

What the Earlham and Orwell concept does—and does not—show

On 16 July 2026, Orcadian Energy said it had begun an assessment phase for the Earlham and Orwell fields on licence P2680. Its preferred concept is an offshore power station using field gas, integrated carbon capture and a co-located offshore data center operating as a proposed islanded grid. The company described a 200 MW data-center hall and approximately 200 MW of electrical supply as concept capacities and said a Concept Select Report was intended.

The announcement also presents offshore siting as potentially reducing proximity to residential areas, using seawater for cooling and avoiding some grid-transmission and distribution requirements through co-location. Those are stated project rationales. They do not establish independent reserves, a production forecast, final engineering, permits, construction funding, customer commitments or operating results. The 49% carbon-dioxide statement makes gas treatment and carbon management central feasibility questions rather than solved features.

A practical due-diligence sequence

  1. Freeze the project definition. Record field boundaries, operating life, data-center IT load, reliability target, expansion phases, cooling concept and geographic jurisdictions.
  2. Commission independent subsurface work. Obtain recoverable volumes, production-rate forecasts, decline cases, pressure data, well count, uptime and abandonment assumptions.
  3. Complete gas characterization. Test contaminants, heating value and pressure, then obtain vendor-confirmed treatment and fuel specifications.
  4. Produce an integrated energy balance. Calculate net firm power after treatment, capture, cooling, auxiliaries, losses and reserve margin under normal and degraded conditions.
  5. Design the reliability architecture. Model maintenance, trips, black start, batteries, emergency generation, load shedding and islanded controls.
  6. Develop the offshore concept. Lay out modules, cooling, water systems, fiber, fire protection, access, lifting, security and emergency response.
  7. Quantify emissions and carbon storage. Include methane, combustion, capture energy, transport, storage or reinjection, monitoring and residual emissions.
  8. Screen all three delivery configurations. Compare onshore gas export, offshore generation with cable export and islanded co-location using the same assumptions.
  9. Map consents and environmental studies. Identify marine licences, planning approvals, seabed rights, protected sites, shipping and fisheries interactions, and cross-border obligations.
  10. Validate customers, costs and finance. Require a whole-life model, schedule, customer evidence, funding plan and sensitivity analysis before a final investment decision.

Evidence that should be in the decision file

  • Independent resource and reserves report with production curves.
  • Gas-composition analyses and treatment design basis.
  • Generator performance curves and a complete auxiliary-load schedule.
  • Data-center load, growth, redundancy and service-level model.
  • Cooling, seawater-intake and thermal-discharge studies.
  • Fiber-route, cable, landfall and repair assessments.
  • Carbon-capture, transport, storage or reinjection qualification.
  • Marine, ecological, air-quality, greenhouse-gas and cumulative-impact assessments.
  • Safety case, emergency-response plan and maintenance logistics.
  • Capital, operating, decommissioning and financing model.
  • Customer contracts or credible demand evidence.
  • Jurisdiction-specific consent schedule and legal opinions.

Red flags that should stop a yes decision

  • A resource estimate is presented without a sustainable production-rate forecast.
  • Gas composition is known, but treatment energy, equipment and waste streams are not designed.
  • A generator nameplate is compared directly with IT load.
  • Carbon capture is described without capture-rate, energy-penalty, transport or storage evidence.
  • Cooling relies on seawater without corrosion, fouling, intake, discharge and failure analysis.
  • An islanded facility has no demonstrated black start, redundancy or maintenance strategy.
  • Subsea connectivity, cable repair and weather access are treated as afterthoughts.
  • A policy label such as “carbon-capture-ready” is used as proof of low emissions or consent.
  • Project capacity is announced without customer, financing or permit evidence.
