Assess valuation risk by testing what a stock price assumes about durable earnings, then challenging those assumptions with the company’s business model, customers, geography, policy access, supply chain and industry cycle. “Chinese tech hardware” is not one risk category: a semiconductor-equipment maker, fabless chip designer, component supplier and finished-system manufacturer can have very different earnings threats. The filings discussed below show how to build that analysis, but they do not establish a universal sector multiple or prove that any current stock is overvalued.

What valuation risk means in this sector

A valuation is a set of expectations expressed as a price. A price-to-earnings multiple assumes something about future revenue, margins, reinvestment, taxes, financing and the durability of cash generation. Valuation risk is the chance that one or more of those assumptions fail.

For Chinese technology hardware companies, the failure can occur on either side of the income statement. Demand may weaken when customers cut capital spending. A product may become harder or more expensive to sell because export licences, sanctions, tariffs or other trade measures change. A company may lose access to a foundry, assembly partner, software tool or critical component. Intense competition can force prices down. A business that appears inexpensive on unusually high cyclical earnings can therefore carry more risk than its trailing multiple suggests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The right question is not “What multiple does Chinese hardware deserve?” It is “What earnings stream is this price capitalising, how resilient is that stream, and what would make it smaller, later or more expensive to produce?”

Start with the business model, not the country label

Build a peer group from companies with comparable economics. Country, exchange listing and a broad technology label are not sufficient. Classify each company by its position in the value chain and by who bears manufacturing and market-access risk.

Business model Questions that change valuation risk
Semiconductor equipment Are sales tied to wafer-fabrication investment? Which customers and factories can legally receive the tools? How much revenue comes from service, upgrades and new systems?
Fabless chip design Which foundries, packaging partners and software tools are essential? Can a design be moved to another process without a long requalification period? How concentrated are end customers?
Integrated manufacturing How much capacity is owned or controlled? What utilisation rate is needed to cover fixed costs? Are plants, power, water and logistics concentrated in one region?
Components and modules Does the company have pricing power or is it competing on volume? Can customers dual-source the part? Are key materials or upstream chips imported?
Finished systems How sensitive are orders to consumer or enterprise budgets? What warranty, inventory and channel obligations consume cash when demand slows?

ACM Research’s 2025 annual report, for example, discusses semiconductor-industry downturns and aggressive pricing in Asia. Those disclosures are useful prompts for examining a particular equipment maker; they are not evidence that every Chinese hardware issuer faces identical cycle or pricing exposure. Lam Research’s filings describe a different mix of global customers, Chinese manufacturing locations and export-licence constraints. A fabless designer’s foundry dependence may create yet another risk pattern.

Step 1: Establish the earnings base you are valuing

Read the latest annual and interim filings

Begin with the income statement, cash-flow statement, segment note, revenue-recognition policy, risk factors and management’s discussion of results. Record the reporting period and whether figures are trailing, year-to-date or forward estimates. A multiple is meaningless if the numerator and denominator cover different periods or if one period contains a temporary surge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Separate organic growth from acquisitions, currency movements and accounting changes.
  • Track gross margin, operating margin and free-cash-flow conversion across several periods rather than relying on one quarter.
  • Identify whether a margin increase comes from sustainable pricing, product mix, a temporary capacity constraint or unusually low costs.
  • Compare bookings, backlog, shipments and revenue when the company discloses them; a strong backlog can still be cancelled, delayed or repriced.
  • Check working-capital movements. Receivables or inventories growing faster than sales can turn an apparently strong earnings period into a cash-flow problem.

Normalize cyclical earnings

Semiconductor and electronics demand can move sharply with customer capital expenditure, inventory corrections and product transitions. Test at least three earnings states: a normal operating year, a stronger year and a downturn. Use the company’s own history and disclosed end-market drivers to choose the states. Do not treat the highest recent margin as a permanent baseline without evidence that capacity, competition and pricing have structurally changed.

A simple normalized-earnings worksheet can show the issue:

  1. Estimate revenue for each scenario by end market or segment.
  2. Apply a margin that reflects the scenario’s pricing and utilisation assumptions.
  3. Subtract recurring operating costs, interest, taxes and maintenance capital expenditure.
  4. Compare the resulting earnings and cash flow with the current share price.

This is an analytical framework, not a prescribed formula from the cited filings. The filings do not supply a sector-wide “normal” margin or fair-value multiple.

Step 2: Measure concentration in customers, end markets and geography

Customer and end-market concentration

Find the percentage of revenue attributable to major customers, customer categories and end markets. Concentration raises sensitivity: losing one large account can affect revenue, utilisation, receivables and negotiating power at the same time. A diversified customer list does not remove risk if many customers depend on the same semiconductor cycle or policy-supported investment programme.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask whether customers can delay orders, qualify a competing product or bring production in-house. For equipment companies, a small number of wafer-fabrication customers may determine near-term bookings. For components, design wins may be sticky but still vulnerable to a product-generation change. For finished systems, channel inventory can postpone the recovery that a valuation assumes.

Use the issuer’s definitions for geographic revenue

Do not mix customer location, manufacturing location and shipment destination. Companies define “China revenue” differently, and the fiscal period matters. Lam Research’s FY2025 Form 10-K states that revenue in China includes global customers and domestic Chinese customers with manufacturing facilities in China. It represented approximately 34% of total revenue in fiscal 2025, 42% in fiscal 2024 and 26% in fiscal 2023.

Lam Research fiscal year China revenue as a share of total revenue Qualification
FY2025 Approximately 34% Issuer-reported figure; includes global and domestic Chinese customers with manufacturing facilities in China.
FY2024 Approximately 42% Issuer-reported figure under the same filing definition.
FY2023 Approximately 26% Issuer-reported figure under the same filing definition.

The movement from 26% to 42% and then 34% illustrates why a single percentage is not a valuation verdict. Determine whether a company can redirect sales, shift production or substitute customers if a policy or demand shock occurs. A high geographic share signals sensitivity; the eventual financial effect depends on product margins, replacement demand, timing and the company’s position in the supply chain.

Step 3: Turn policy exposure into explicit scenarios

Export controls and other trade measures can affect both demand and the ability to sell. ACM Research describes export controls and trade measures as potential constraints on tool demand, costs and sales. Lam Research reports that export-licence requirements limited its market in China and affected revenue. These are issuer disclosures of material risk, not forecasts of a particular rule or estimate of its probability.

Build a policy map

  • List products that may require a licence or may be restricted by performance, end use or customer type.
  • Identify customers, distributors and manufacturing sites in jurisdictions subject to changing rules.
  • Separate direct sales restrictions from indirect effects such as longer approvals, extra compliance costs, redesigns or lost service access.
  • Record the share of revenue, gross profit and backlog exposed to each channel, using the company’s own definitions.

Model more than a binary ban

A useful downside case need not assume that all China sales disappear. Model several mechanisms separately: licences delayed by a quarter, selected products unavailable, additional compliance cost, lower utilisation at a regional plant, or customers postponing capital spending while rules are clarified. For each case, estimate the effect on revenue, gross margin, operating expenses, working capital and cash flow. Then consider how quickly unaffected regions or products could replace the lost contribution.

Do not convert a risk-factor paragraph into a probability estimate. Annual reports enumerate possible adverse outcomes; they generally do not establish when an event will occur, whether authorities will grant exceptions or how competitors will respond.

  • 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.

Step 4: Trace manufacturing, supplier and technology dependencies

Map the physical and intellectual inputs required to ship the product. Include foundries, assembly and test providers, substrates, memory, precision components, software, design tools, logistics routes and utilities. For each dependency, record the alternative supplier, qualification time, switching cost and likely effect on output and margin.

A 2025 SEC-filed semiconductor annual report describes dependence on third parties for wafer fabrication and warns that conflict, trade restrictions or instability affecting Taiwan-based foundry operations could disrupt semiconductor manufacturing and supply chains. Apply that concept to a target issuer only after reading its own supply-chain disclosure. The risk is not limited to a factory shutdown: allocation decisions, shipping insurance, sanctions, power interruptions or a delayed requalification can all reduce available supply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Questions for the supply-chain review

  • Is any single foundry, assembly partner or component responsible for a material share of output?
  • Are alternatives technically qualified, or merely listed as possible vendors?
  • How much inventory covers a disruption, and would that inventory become obsolete during a product transition?
  • Can the company obtain replacement equipment, software licences or materials under the relevant export rules?
  • Would a disruption raise costs while fixed operating expenses continue?

Supply-chain resilience should be judged by credible alternatives and time to switch, not by a generic statement that management is monitoring risk.

Step 5: Test competition and the earnings denominator

Competition can damage valuation in two ways. It can reduce the numerator by lowering price and market share, and it can make the denominator—current earnings—temporarily high if a shortage or favourable mix boosts margins. ACM Research’s 2025 annual report identifies aggressive pricing pressure in Asia and the possibility of a semiconductor-industry downturn.

Examine the company’s response to previous price competition, the number and capability of substitutes, customer qualification barriers and the share of revenue from service or consumables. A technically differentiated product may retain pricing power, but that claim should be tested against changes in gross margin, win rates and customer concentration. A low price-to-earnings ratio based on peak earnings can be riskier than a higher multiple based on durable cash generation.

Step 6: Compare valuation under stated assumptions

Choose a valuation measure that matches the business. Price-to-earnings can be distorted by cycle timing, depreciation and one-off items. Enterprise-value-to-EBIT or enterprise-value-to-free-cash-flow can help when capital intensity or cash conversion differs between peers. For early-stage or heavily investing companies, revenue multiples may be necessary, but they shift the burden to proving a path to sustainable margins.

For every comparable company, record the following in one worksheet:

Item What to record Why it matters
Peer definition Business model, customer type, end market and manufacturing responsibility Prevents a misleading comparison between different risk structures.
Valuation measure P/E, EV/EBIT, EV/free cash flow or another explicitly chosen measure Shows which economic claim the multiple is pricing.
Earnings period Trailing, annualised, forecast or normalized period, with fiscal date Reveals whether the denominator captures a peak, trough or partial year.
Growth assumption Revenue and unit growth by segment Identifies dependence on one market or customer cohort.
Margin assumption Gross and operating margin, plus utilisation and pricing drivers Tests whether competition and supply shocks are reflected.
Capital needs Capital expenditure, working capital and research spending Separates accounting profit from distributable cash.
Downside case Policy, demand, supply or pricing shock and recovery period Shows how much valuation depends on uninterrupted execution.

Compare a base case with at least one downside case tied to documented issuer exposures. If current earnings are unusually strong, use normalized earnings and cash generation rather than relying on one trailing multiple. The cited filings do not prescribe a particular valuation model, normalization formula or fair-value multiple, so disclose your assumptions instead of presenting a calculated number as an objective threshold.

Comparison framework for multiple investment options

When several stocks pass an initial screen, compare them on the same axes. The framework below is derived from the risk channels disclosed by the cited issuers; it is not a validated scoring system and the available filings do not provide consistent inputs for ranking every Chinese hardware company.

Axis Evidence to collect Interpretation
Value-chain position Equipment, design, manufacturing, components or finished systems Determines which customers, suppliers and fixed costs drive results.
Revenue exposure Customer concentration, end-market mix and geographic revenue Measures sensitivity to a specific buyer, cycle or jurisdiction.
Policy sensitivity Products, customers and sites affected by controls, licences, sanctions or tariffs Shows how market access and compliance costs could change.
Supply-chain resilience Third-party reliance, geographic concentration and qualified alternatives Indicates the ability to keep shipping during disruption.
Earnings quality Cyclicality, pricing power, margin stability and cash conversion Tests whether reported profit is durable.

Keep a falsifiable risk register

For each material risk, create one line with four fields:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Evidence: the precise filing section, metric or management disclosure supporting the concern.
  2. Financial transmission: the revenue, margin, cost, working-capital or capital-expenditure line that could change.
  3. Observable indicator: a future filing, backlog trend, licence decision, customer announcement, inventory movement or margin result that would show the risk developing.
  4. Falsifier: evidence that would reduce the concern, such as a qualified second supplier, successful geographic substitution or stable pricing through a downturn.

Revisit the register whenever the company files new annual or interim results or when relevant trade rules change. Keep the date and definition attached to every number. A risk disclosure is not a prediction, and an absence of a warning in one filing is not proof that the exposure has disappeared.

Common analytical mistakes

Using a broad sector multiple

There is no universal valuation multiple established by the cited evidence. Equipment, fabless design, manufacturing and systems businesses have different capital intensity, cycle exposure and policy sensitivity. A sector-wide average can conceal those differences.

Treating China revenue as a simple bearish percentage

Geographic concentration indicates sensitivity, not the size of a future loss. Check the issuer’s definition, customer manufacturing location, product mix, margins and ability to redirect demand.

Assuming a risk factor is imminent

ACM Research, Lam Research and other SEC filers describe possible adverse outcomes. Their disclosures establish that management considers the risks material; they do not establish timing, probability or a forecast loss.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring indirect exposure

A company can be affected without selling directly to a restricted customer. A supplier, foundry, distributor, software licence, shipping route or end-market customer may be exposed instead.

Comparing unmatched periods

Match fiscal years, currency, accounting measures and issuer definitions. Lam Research’s China percentages are fiscal-year figures, and the change across FY2023, FY2024 and FY2025 shows why period consistency matters.

Confusing accounting earnings with cash

Inventory builds, receivables, capital expenditure and research spending can absorb cash even when earnings rise. Include those requirements in the downside case.

A repeatable review checklist

  • Have I grouped the company with genuinely comparable business models?
  • Which customers, end markets and regions account for the largest share of revenue and gross profit?
  • What does the issuer mean by China revenue, and which fiscal periods are being compared?
  • Which products, customers or facilities could face export controls, licences, sanctions or tariffs?
  • Which foundries, assembly partners, components, software tools and logistics routes are critical?
  • How long would it take to qualify alternatives, and what would the transition cost?
  • Are current margins and earnings representative, or could they reflect a cyclical peak, shortage or temporary pricing?
  • Does the valuation include capital expenditure, working capital and research needs?
  • What specific observable event would confirm or disprove each downside assumption?
  • When will I update the analysis after the next filing or policy change?

What the available evidence can and cannot tell you

The cited material supports a disciplined process for assessing valuation risk. It demonstrates that policy can constrain demand and sales, that geographic exposure changes by issuer and fiscal year, that third-party manufacturing can create Taiwan-related supply-chain risk, and that downturns and aggressive pricing can pressure earnings. It does not provide a current share price, forward estimate, comparable market dataset, universal multiple or ranking of overvalued and undervalued stocks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those limits matter. A conclusion about a named security requires the latest filing and market data for that security, with every figure dated and defined. The strongest defensible conclusion from these disclosures is therefore conditional: valuation is more fragile when a price depends on concentrated demand, uninterrupted policy access, a single supply route, peak-cycle margins or cash conversion that has not been demonstrated.
