Some ionic liquids are toxic to fish in laboratory tests, but toxicity varies by chemical formulation and exposure conditions. A test result establishes a hazard for the compound and conditions studied; it does not show that fish in a particular river, lake, or coastal area are exposed to harmful concentrations.
What fish toxicity studies have found
In a 2009 static acute-toxicity study, Carlo Pretti and colleagues tested 18 ionic liquids on zebrafish (Danio rerio), water fleas (Daphnia magna), and a freshwater alga then named Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. The study abstract reports generally higher toxicity for long-chain ammonium salts and low toxicity for the tested sulfonium- and morpholinium-based liquids. Those results describe the tested compounds and conditions, not every member of those chemical families. Read the study abstract.
A 2021 review tabulates 96-hour zebrafish LC50 values for imidazolium-based ionic liquids. LC50 is the concentration that is lethal to half of the test organisms over the stated exposure period. The values differ with the cation’s alkyl-chain length and the anion. For example, the table lists 2,620 µg/mL for C2 imidazolium chloride and 632.8 ± 67.4 µg/mL for C4 imidazolium chloride. These figures apply to the named compounds and the review’s reported test conditions; they are not safe-concentration limits for natural waters. See the review and its table.
Why one ionic liquid may be more harmful than another
Cation and alkyl-chain length
Several tested groups show a relationship between longer alkyl chains and greater toxicity, but the pattern should be checked within the particular chemical family. It is not a universal rule that predicts the toxicity of every ionic liquid. The 2009 study’s findings for long-chain ammonium salts and the 2021 review’s imidazolium data illustrate why the exact structure matters.

Anion identity
The anion also matters. The zebrafish values compiled in the 2021 review vary across anions as well as cation structures. A useful comparison therefore holds the cation and exposure conditions constant where possible rather than attributing a difference to the anion when several properties have changed at once.
Species and test endpoint
Fish, algae, and invertebrates are different test organisms, not interchangeable stand-ins for one another. Results also depend on the endpoint, exposure duration, test method, and, when reported, the life stage of the organism. An acute LC50 result answers a narrower question than whether a chemical causes chronic effects at lower concentrations.

How ionic liquids can affect aquatic organisms
Reviews of the literature discuss cell-membrane damage and oxidative stress among mechanisms implicated in ionic-liquid toxicity. These are mechanisms reported across studies, not proof that every formulation affects every fish species in the same way. Physicochemical properties, including hydrophobicity, can also influence how an ionic liquid moves through or is retained in the environment. Wei and colleagues’ review and Cho and colleagues’ review discuss these broader toxicological and environmental considerations.

No. Low vapor pressure can reduce the potential for a substance to enter the air, but it does not establish aquatic safety. Water solubility, release, persistence, environmental movement, and toxicity to aquatic organisms remain relevant. A 2010 review addresses the environmental fate and toxicity of ionic liquids, while later reviews caution against treating the “green solvent” label as a guarantee of environmental safety. See the 2010 environmental-fate review.

What these results do—and do not—say about wild fish
Laboratory toxicity is evidence of hazard under specified conditions. Estimating risk to wild fish also requires evidence that a particular ionic liquid is released and that organisms encounter relevant concentrations for a meaningful duration. The cited studies and reviews do not establish concentrations in a specific river, lake, or coastal waterbody, nor a site-specific risk estimate. They also do not establish one safe concentration for ionic liquids as a class or a universal regulatory water limit; a regulatory claim would need to name the jurisdiction and chemical.
The broader aquatic literature is uneven. A 2023 review counted 103 studies within its scope on aquatic microorganisms and invertebrates—not 103 fish studies—and found algae to be the most represented organisms. The authors called for testing more organisms and improving monitoring procedures. Its tally describes the review’s coverage, not the volume of fish-specific evidence. Read the review abstract.

A 2026 review in the Journal of Hazardous Materials broadens the synthesis across aquatic trophic levels and describes toxicity patterns as dependent on functionalization, alkyl-chain length, anion identity, and exposure conditions. Its abstract summarizes effects across aquatic animals and plants; it does not, by itself, establish exposure or risk for fish at a particular location. Read the review abstract.

To interpret a claim or study about a particular compound, check the following details rather than relying on the class name alone:
Quick Recap
- Exact formulation: identify the cation, anion, and relevant structural features such as alkyl-chain length.
- Test organism: note the fish species and life stage, if reported; do not substitute results from algae or invertebrates for fish-specific evidence.
- Exposure and endpoint: distinguish acute from chronic testing and keep the duration, concentration units, and endpoint—such as LC50—attached to the result.
- Environmental context: separate laboratory hazard from actual exposure. A site-specific risk assessment needs measured or otherwise supported exposure information, not just a toxicity value.
