To assess a stock’s sensitivity to interest rates, define the rate shock you care about, examine how it could change the company’s value and cash flows, then estimate the stock’s historical response to comparable surprises while controlling for broad-market moves. Treat the result as an estimate for a particular shock and period—not as a permanent characteristic or a forecast.
What “interest-rate sensitivity” measures
A stock does not respond to one universal interest rate. A change in the overnight policy rate, a change in a 10-year Treasury yield, and a steepening or flattening of the yield curve are different shocks. They can affect different parts of a company’s business and valuation, and they may convey different information about expected growth, inflation, or risk.
It helps to separate three channels. First, the discount rate used to value future cash flows can change. Second, the company’s expected cash flows and financing conditions can change. Third, investors may revise the additional return they require for bearing equity risk—the equity risk premium. A share-price move around a rate announcement can reflect any combination of these channels, as well as broader market news.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Federal Reserve explained the discount-rate component this way in 2021: “The discount rate for a risky asset equals the interest rate on a safe asset plus a risk premium, which compensates investors for the risk of losses from holding the risky asset.” That is why a Treasury yield alone cannot explain a stock’s value: expected cash flows and the premium investors require for risk matter too.

Start by specifying the rate shock
Before comparing stocks or calculating a coefficient, write down what “rates change” means for your question. Choose a rate measure and a type of movement. A policy-rate surprise is not interchangeable with a long-term yield move; a parallel shift of the yield curve is not the same as a steepening. If you change the definition midway through an analysis, the resulting sensitivities are no longer directly comparable.
- Unexpected policy-rate change: Useful when the question concerns the market’s response to monetary-policy news. The surprise component matters: a fully anticipated decision is not the same event as an unexpected change.
- Long-term government-bond yield move: More directly describes a change in a longer-term benchmark yield, but it can also reflect changing expectations for growth and inflation.
- Parallel yield-curve shift: Treats yields across maturities as moving together. This is a specific analytical scenario, not a synonym for every real-world rate move.
- Steepening or flattening: Captures a change in the relative shape of short- and long-term yields. It can matter especially when assets and liabilities reprice at different maturities.
Also choose the observation window. A return measured in a narrow announcement window answers a different question from a monthly return paired with a monthly rate change. State whether the rate movement is an identified surprise or simply an observed change; otherwise, readers cannot tell whether the estimate isolates unexpected news or mixes it with other developments.
Map the valuation and cash-flow channels
Discounting and the timing of cash flows
In a discounted-cash-flow framework, investors value expected future cash flows by discounting them. If the discount rate rises and expected cash flows stay the same, the present value of more distant cash flows generally falls more than the present value of nearer cash flows. This timing effect is often described using equity duration: it is a useful way to reason about the discount-rate component of equity valuation.

All else equal, a company whose value depends more heavily on growth and cash flows expected far into the future has greater duration-style exposure than one distributing a larger share of value in near-term dividends. That is a conceptual comparison, not a complete estimate of stock sensitivity. Actual share prices also respond to changing cash-flow expectations, financing, and risk premiums.

Dividends, growth, and financing
Dividend yield can provide one clue about the timing of shareholder cash returns, but it is not a standalone sensitivity score. A high yield does not prove a stock will be resilient when rates rise, and a low yield does not prove it will fall. Expected growth, payout policy, business conditions, and the market’s required risk premium all affect the result.
Consider whether higher borrowing costs could change the company’s interest expense, refinancing needs, or ability to fund investment. The relevant question is not simply how much debt appears on a balance sheet: timing and terms of borrowing, upcoming refinancing, and reliance on external capital can change how exposed the company is. Rate changes can also coincide with changes in demand, costs, inflation, and expected economic growth, which may raise or lower future cash flows.
Risk premiums and interpretation
A policy announcement can change investors’ expectations about the economy as well as the safe rate used in valuation. It may also change how much compensation investors demand for risk. Because stock prices alone do not identify which channel caused a move, avoid describing an observed return as a pure discount-rate effect unless the analysis actually isolates that channel.
Compare company characteristics systematically
For a first-pass comparison, use the same questions for each company. The characteristics below help explain possible mechanisms; none alone establishes how much a stock will move in response to a particular shock.

| Comparison axis | What to examine | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cash-flow timing and growth | How much of the company’s value depends on expected growth and cash flows further in the future? | More distant expected cash flows can imply greater duration-style exposure to a discount-rate change, all else equal. |
| Dividends and payout | Current dividends and the share of cash flow distributed to investors. | Larger near-term distributions can reduce duration-style exposure, but do not determine total stock sensitivity. |
| Debt and refinancing | Borrowing exposure, refinancing needs, and when financing costs could change. | Rates may affect interest expense and financing capacity, which can alter expected cash flows. |
| External capital dependence | How much the business relies on outside funding to continue or expand operations. | Changes in financing conditions may affect firms differently depending on their funding needs. |
| Operating exposure | How revenues and costs could respond to economic growth and inflation that accompany rate changes. | A rate move can affect business expectations as well as valuation discount rates. |
| Estimated response to a defined shock | Historical stock returns around the same rate measure and shock, with broad-market returns controlled for. | This provides an empirical comparison for the stated sample and method, not a guarantee about future response. |
Use like-for-like evidence: same rate measure, event definition, return window, sample period, and market control. A company’s characteristics can suggest why it might be exposed, while a historical estimate describes what the chosen model found in a specified sample. Neither substitutes for the other.
Assess banks with their balance sheets in view
For a bank, examine how quickly its assets and liabilities reprice, their maturity mismatch, and the composition of its funding. Relevant dimensions include deposit composition, wholesale funding, uninsured deposits, size, and leverage. These features help frame how a rate shock might affect asset values, funding costs, expected profits, and growth.
Do not assume that higher rates automatically benefit a bank because they may increase net interest margins. A Federal Reserve study published in 2012 estimated that an unexpected 25-basis-point parallel upward yield-curve shift was followed by a 2.0–2.5% decline in average bank share value. The researchers attributed the estimated response to multiple channels, including valuation, asset values, expected profits, and growth. This is a study-specific estimate, not a general forecast for banks or an estimate for an individual institution.
A later Federal Reserve Board note, published in 2025, reported that a five-factor model explained about 80% of variation in banks’ excess returns. That figure describes the explanatory fit of that bank-return factor model; it is not the share of bank returns caused by interest rates. The distinction matters when using a model’s reported fit to explain a particular risk.

Estimate a historical response
A regression or event study can turn a qualitative question into a measurable, qualified estimate. The essential design is to use stock returns as the outcome, a defined unexpected rate measure as the shock, and broad-market returns as a control. The estimate remains conditional on the chosen model, event window, frequency, and sample.
Set up the comparison
- Choose the stock return: Define the return series and frequency you will analyze. Keep that choice consistent across the stocks being compared.
- Choose the rate variable: Specify the policy surprise, yield change, or curve movement. Do not label a raw observed rate change an unexpected shock unless it is identified as one.
- Choose the event window and dates: State how close to the event returns are measured, how often observations occur, and the sample start and end dates. A different window or period can produce a different estimate.
- Control for the broad market: Include broad-market returns so that the rate estimate is not simply a reflection of the stock moving with the market.
- Estimate and inspect the result: Report the estimated association with the selected rate shock, the model and sample, and the uncertainty around the estimate. Compare periods or regimes to check whether the exposure appears stable.
- Describe the result precisely: Call it an estimated response for that shock and sample. Do not convert it into a promise that the stock will rise or fall by a fixed amount next time rates move.
At a high level, the model asks whether the stock’s return tends to be higher or lower when the defined surprise occurs, after accounting for the broad-market return. The sign and size are meaningful only with the shock’s units and the model’s specification attached. If the shock changes from a policy surprise to a long-yield move, or the sample changes, the coefficient answers a different question.
Use historical estimates as evidence, not forecasts
One widely cited aggregate result illustrates why every number needs its sample attached. New York Fed researchers Ben S. Bernanke and Kenneth N. Kuttner estimated that the CRSP value-weighted index increased roughly 1% for a typical unexpected 25-basis-point rate cut in their June 1989–December 2002 sample. This describes a historical aggregate response, not the expected change for a particular stock or a forecast for a future rate cut.

Likewise, the bank estimate above concerns average bank share values under a specified parallel yield-curve shift. It should not be compared directly with the aggregate index estimate as if they measured the same assets, shock, or sample. Each estimate answers a different empirical question.

Account for variation across firms and time
Rate sensitivity is not fixed. Industry averages and familiar company traits can help identify where to look, but the empirical literature finds variation across firms and periods that observable characteristics do not fully explain. A 2026 New York Fed staff report found that about 5% of firm-time observations were associated with a strong investment response to monetary policy. That finding concerns firms’ investment responses—not direct stock-return sensitivity—and should not be presented as a statistic about the share of rate-sensitive stocks.
When comparing two stocks, use the same shock definition and sample, then consider both the historical response and the business characteristics that could explain it. If the result differs across periods, treat that as information rather than averaging away the difference automatically. It may mean the estimated exposure depends on the economic regime or that the selected window captures different combinations of rate, cash-flow, and risk-premium news.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a sector label as the conclusion: Companies in the same industry can have different growth profiles, balance sheets, funding needs, and cash-flow timing.
- Equating dividend yield with sensitivity: Yield is one characteristic, not a complete valuation or return model.
- Treating every rate move as the same shock: Policy rates, long yields, and curve shifts measure different exposures.
- Ignoring the market: A stock’s return around a rate move may partly reflect the broad market. A market control helps distinguish the stock’s response from general market movement.
- Calling correlation a causal rate effect: Policy news can change expected growth, inflation, and risk premiums. An observed association does not by itself identify the channel.
- Applying an old or aggregate estimate to one stock today: Historical index and average-bank estimates are tied to their samples and methods, not universal conversion factors.
- Reporting a coefficient without its setup: The rate measure, shock definition, units, event window, frequency, sample dates, market control, and uncertainty are part of the result.
How to present a defensible conclusion
A useful assessment states the rate shock first, summarizes the company’s cash-flow timing and financing exposure, and then gives the historical estimate with its method and period. Separate the descriptive finding—what happened in the selected sample—from the analytical interpretation—why the company may have responded—and from any forward-looking view. If those three parts cannot be distinguished, the conclusion is likely more confident than the evidence permits.
