No cryptocurrency miner is automatically the most profitable: the right choice depends on its efficiency and hashrate, your electricity price, installation and cooling costs, uptime, and changing network and market conditions. For Bitcoin SHA-256 mining, the Bitmain Antminer S23 is one current air-cooled example listed at 318 TH/s, 3,498 W, and 11.0 J/TH—but those specifications do not guarantee a profit.

What should you compare when choosing a miner?

Start by deciding which cryptocurrency and mining algorithm you intend to mine. The figures here concern Bitcoin SHA-256 ASICs; they do not establish which hardware is best for other cryptocurrencies or algorithms. Compare candidates under the same assumptions rather than ranking them by hashrate alone.

  • Efficiency: For SHA-256 ASICs, joules per terahash (J/TH) describes energy used for a given amount of hashing work. Lower J/TH means less electricity for equivalent work, all else equal.
  • Hashrate: Terahashes per second (TH/s) indicates the miner’s hashing capacity. It is an input to potential mining output, not a prediction of earnings.
  • Power and electrical setup: Check the exact model’s power draw and electrical requirements against the installation you can safely provide. Include any electrical work in the upfront cost.
  • Cooling and noise: Confirm whether the miner is air- or hydro-cooled and what that means for your space, heat removal, noise tolerance, and infrastructure.
  • Total ownership cost: Include the purchase price, shipping, taxes, installation, cooling equipment, and ongoing operating expenses.
  • Operating assumptions: Use your electricity tariff, pool fee, realistic uptime, and the network and market assumptions shown by the calculator.
  • Purchase risk: Verify current availability, seller reliability, warranty, support, and the manufacturer’s specifications before paying.

A high hashrate can increase potential output, but it also needs to be weighed against power use and total cost. Efficiency helps compare electricity use for equivalent work; it does not by itself establish net profitability.

What does the Antminer S23 specification mean?

A Spark comparison crawled on 7 October 2026 lists the air-cooled Bitmain Antminer S23 at 318 TH/s, 3,498 W, and 11.0 J/TH. Treat this as a model example from a secondary comparison, not a universal winner or a guaranteed current offer. Check Bitmain’s current manufacturer specifications, availability, price, and warranty before making a purchase decision.

At the listed 3,498 W draw, continuous operation for 24 hours would use about 83.95 kWh per day (3.498 kW × 24 hours), before accounting for any additional cooling or facility loads. To estimate that miner’s daily electricity cost, multiply 83.95 by your electricity price per kWh. For example, enter your actual tariff—not an industry average—into the calculation. The result is an energy-cost estimate, not a mining-profit estimate.

How do you estimate whether mining could pay?

Use a calculator as a scenario tool. Mining revenue changes with network conditions, coin prices, and the calculator’s data; your electricity, pool, installation, and operating costs determine how much of any estimated revenue remains.

  1. Enter the exact miner: Use its current hashrate and power draw, and confirm the values against manufacturer information.
  2. Enter your real electricity tariff: Use the amount you actually pay per kWh, including relevant charges where applicable. If cooling or other facility equipment adds power use, account for it too.
  3. Set pool fee and uptime: Use the fee for the pool you would actually join and a realistic estimate of operating time. Do not assume uninterrupted operation unless that is a defensible assumption for your setup.
  4. Include upfront and recurring costs: Add the miner, shipping, tax, installation, cooling infrastructure, and ongoing expenses. A calculator that only models mining output and electricity cannot represent all-in economics.
  5. Review the calculator’s date and assumptions: Note the network and coin-price data it uses, then rerun the estimate when those inputs change.
  6. Test downside cases: Check what happens if revenue falls, energy costs rise, or uptime is lower than expected. Do not rely on a single favorable output.

A useful simplified check is: estimated operating cash flow = estimated mining revenue after pool fees − electricity − other recurring operating costs. If that figure is positive under your assumptions, a rough operating payback period is upfront cost divided by estimated monthly operating cash flow. If monthly cash flow is zero or negative, that scenario has no operating payback. This simplified calculation is not a guarantee and does not account for every tax, financing, resale, or future network effect.

Coin Bureau’s cited example calculations use February 2026 conditions, a 4% pool fee, steady uptime, and official list pricing where shown. Those assumptions make any ROI bands in that comparison dated illustrations, not forecasts for your location or present-day returns. Kryptex says its ASIC ranking can be adjusted by electricity price and was last updated 6 October 2026. ASIC Miner Group says its calculator’s market data was updated 7 October 2026 and uses network and coin-price data. Those dates help describe the inputs; they do not make calculator output a promise.

Should you choose air cooling or hydro cooling?

Choose based on the installation you can support, not a general claim that one method is always better. The available comparison material discusses air and hydro cooling but does not establish a universal cost, performance, or profitability advantage for either approach.

  • Air-cooled: Consider whether the miner’s heat and noise can be managed in the location where it will run, and whether the electrical setup matches the model.
  • Hydro-cooled: Account for the cooling loop and related infrastructure, which can raise initial setup costs. Confirm the requirements for the specific miner and installation rather than assuming generic cooling equipment will fit.

Compare the full installation cost and practical thermal, power, and noise constraints with the expected operating scenario. A lower hardware price can be offset by installation needs, while additional cooling infrastructure can change the economics in the other direction.

How much does electricity matter?

Electricity is a major variable, but published industry averages should not be mistaken for a household or site tariff. The 2025 AMINA Bank/AlixPartners report states: “Public miners tracked in the analysis consume a weighted average of 4.5 cents per kWh of energy, with electricity costs representing about 68% pre-halving and 71% post-halving of the cash-cost structure on a weighted average basis.” These figures describe the public miners tracked in that report and its 2025 analysis; they are not a current rate or cost share for every miner.

For your own estimate, use your bill’s applicable per-kWh cost and the miner’s actual operating assumptions. In the S23 example above, the listed draw alone corresponds to about 83.95 kWh per day at continuous operation; your total site consumption may be higher once other equipment is included.

What to verify before buying

  • Confirm the exact model’s specifications with its manufacturer; secondary comparisons can change or contain outdated details.
  • Check regional availability, final delivered price, seller identity, warranty terms, and support for the specific unit.
  • Confirm electrical, cooling, and noise requirements for your intended location before ordering.
  • Run the same calculator scenario across candidates, and retain the date, electricity rate, pool fee, uptime, hardware price, and market assumptions for each estimate.
  • Recalculate before purchase: miner pricing, availability, network conditions, and coin prices can change.

The strongest candidate is the one that works within your actual site and remains economically plausible under conservative assumptions—not simply the model with the highest hashrate or the lowest J/TH figure.
