Open the product or comparison page in Chrome, choose Ask Gemini in Chrome, and ask a specific shopping question in ordinary language. For crowded pages, use Add menu → Select from screen to draw around the products or specifications you want Gemini to examine. Then check important specifications, prices, stock and seller details on the retailer’s or manufacturer’s page before buying.
What Gemini in Chrome can do for product research
Gemini in Chrome is useful when you are already looking at a product page, comparison article or store category and want help interpreting what is on the screen. Google’s shopping guidance describes the basic action plainly: “In Gemini in Chrome, ask about a product you’re shopping for.” You can ask about one item, compare named products, or focus on a visible group of products.
Depending on the page and the response, Gemini may return product cards with descriptions, reviews, buying options, comparisons and links to product details. Those cards are a research aid, not a guarantee that every product, merchant or purchase path is represented. Availability, prices and specifications can change, and some products or transactions are excluded.

Check access before you start
Shopping assistance and screen selection have separate eligibility rules. The following conditions come from Google’s computer shopping and Chrome help documentation; Google can change country lists, account requirements and rollout status.

If you are unsure whether your country or account is included, use Google’s current Gemini shopping eligibility page rather than assuming the feature is universal. Merchant participation and product restrictions also matter; Google excludes some age-restricted goods and certain digital goods.
Ask a normal product question in Chrome
- Open the relevant page. In Chrome on a supported computer, load the product detail page, a comparison page or a category page containing the items you are considering.
- Open Ask Gemini in Chrome. Use the Ask Gemini control in Chrome. The shopping workflow is designed for questions about the product you are currently shopping for.
- State the decision and criteria. Name the product or models and list the attributes that matter: intended use, size, material, weight, price, battery life, warranty or another category-specific requirement.
- Send the question in natural language. A complete request gives Gemini a clearer task than a single adjective such as “best” or “cheap.”
- Inspect the response and any product cards. Open a card when you need its description, reviews, buying options or additional product links. Treat the result as a starting point for verification, especially when the purchase is expensive or safety-critical.
Start with one decision rather than asking for everything at once. For example, first ask which of two laptops fits a college budget, then ask a follow-up about ports, warranty or battery claims. This keeps the comparison tied to the page and makes it easier to spot a missing value. If the page contains several editions of the same product, include the exact model name or number in the question.
Use Select from screen when the page is difficult to describe
A long comparison table, a grid of similar products or a specification panel can be hard to identify with words alone. Gemini in Chrome’s documented screen-selection flow lets you attach the relevant portion of the webpage.
- Open Ask Gemini in Chrome.
- Choose Add menu.
- Select Select from screen.
- Draw a box around the products, rows, images or specifications you want Gemini to inspect.
- Resize or reposition the selection if it misses a column or includes unrelated content.
- Type a concrete question about the selected area and send it.
Google’s example is to select a few pairs of sneakers and ask which is best for a particular running style. You can apply the same method to a laptop comparison, luggage table or camera specification list. Selection is most useful when the answer depends on visible differences rather than the page’s general subject.
Include the column headings, prices and model labels in the selection whenever possible. Selecting only a product photo may omit the information needed for a meaningful comparison. Conversely, a very large selection can include advertisements, recommendations or unrelated rows. Draw the smallest box that still contains the facts needed for the question, then resize it before sending if a value or heading was cut off.

Google’s examples show why a product prompt should include a goal and explicit comparison axes. Adapt the wording to the page in front of you.

Replace bracketed product names with the exact names shown on the page. Add constraints that change the decision, such as “must fit a 15-inch laptop,” “for travel in wet weather” or “needs a two-year warranty.” If a criterion is not displayed, ask Gemini to identify the missing information instead of assuming it can supply a reliable value.
You can also ask for a structured answer: “Make a table with one row per model and columns for price, weight, dimensions, warranty and missing information.” A format request does not make an unavailable specification appear, but it makes omissions easier to notice. For a tie, ask “What trade-off causes the tie?” For a recommendation, ask “Which stated requirement does your choice satisfy, and which requirement remains uncertain?”
How to evaluate Gemini’s answer
Separate page facts from generated interpretation
Gemini may summarize text, organize specifications and explain trade-offs. Read the underlying product card or page for the exact wording of a claim. A concise comparison can hide differences in model year, regional configuration, included accessories or warranty coverage.
Pay particular attention to values that look interchangeable but are not. A listed weight may apply to one size, a battery figure may be a manufacturer estimate, and a warranty may differ between the brand and the marketplace seller. Ask Gemini to label information as “shown on the page,” “not shown,” or “needs confirmation” when the distinction matters.
Open product cards for details
Google says product cards can expose descriptions, reviews, buying options and other details. Use those controls to move from a high-level answer to the relevant listing. A card can also provide a direct product link, but the destination remains the authoritative place to check the current offer.
Verify before paying
- Confirm the exact model number, size, color and included accessories.
- Check the current price, shipping charges, taxes, delivery date and return terms on the seller’s page.
- Read the manufacturer or retailer specification for dimensions, compatibility, capacity and warranty.
- Make sure the listing is for the same region and edition that Gemini compared.
- Recheck stock immediately before checkout; buying options can change after the answer is generated.
This verification step is editorial safety guidance, not a promise from Google that every Gemini result is error-free. It matters most when a wrong specification would make the product unusable or when the purchase is costly.
Product research is not the same as checkout
Google’s shopping help distinguishes research from purchase completion. Gemini may show a Buy button on an eligible web-app product listing, and Google Pay checkout can be available for eligible transactions. Neither capability applies to every product card, merchant or category. Do not assume that an answer containing a product link will let you complete the purchase inside Gemini.

Merchant eligibility and product restrictions affect what appears. Google specifically notes restrictions for some age-restricted goods and certain digital goods. If no buying option appears, use the linked retailer or manufacturer page and follow that site’s normal checkout process.

Your eventual cost is the seller’s current price plus any displayed shipping, taxes or other checkout charges. A budget prompt such as “under $800” is a filter for the request, not a promise that a qualifying item is in stock or that the final total will remain below that amount.
Device, account and country limitations
Personal versus managed accounts
The described shopping feature requires a personal Google Account with Keep Activity on. Work, school and supervised accounts are not included in that guidance. If Ask Gemini is missing or shopping answers do not appear, check which account is active in Chrome before changing other settings.
Country and rollout differences
Google maintains a supported-country list for shopping assistance. The list is geographically specific and can change, so a feature that appears for one account or country may not appear for another. Screen selection also has its own supported-country and desktop requirements; meeting one set of conditions does not prove that every Gemini capability is enabled.
Android phones and tablets
The reviewed Android Chrome help page says Gemini in Chrome is not available on Android phones or tablets at the time of that guidance. It points Android users to the Gemini mobile assistant for questions about an open webpage. That is a different workflow from the Chrome desktop screen-selection process.

Check the current Chrome help instructions when the Select from screen option is absent.
Do not confuse ordinary questions with Auto browse
Asking Gemini to explain a product page is a single conversational task. Google describes Auto browse as a separate agentic feature that can find and compare products and add them to a cart through multiple steps.

Google’s current Auto browse help page lists narrower conditions: you must be at least 18, be in the United States, opt in if eligible, use the latest Chrome with the device language set to English, and have a personal account with Google AI Ultra or Pro. Rollout is gradual. Auto browse is therefore optional and more restricted; it is not required for asking a question about a product page, and ordinary Ask Gemini availability does not imply Auto browse access.
If you only need an explanation of the page, do not wait for Auto browse or interpret its absence as a failure of the basic product-question workflow. Use the normal prompt and, when needed, Select from screen. Auto browse’s ability to add an item to a cart also does not change the need to review the final merchant, price and order details.

Troubleshoot a missing or unhelpful result
Ask Gemini is not visible
- Confirm that you are using Chrome on a supported computer rather than the Android Chrome app.
- Check that Chrome is signed in to a personal account, not a work, school or supervised account.
- Review whether Keep Activity is enabled and whether your country is on Google’s current supported list.
- Remember that feature rollout can differ by account even when the hardware appears suitable.
The answer mixes products together
- Open the page that contains the exact models you mean.
- Select only the relevant cards, rows or specification block with Add menu → Select from screen.
- Name the models and ask for a side-by-side comparison using fixed criteria.
- Ask a follow-up that identifies which value came from which product.
A specification or price looks wrong
Ask Gemini to show which page detail supports the claim, then open the product link and check the seller or manufacturer listing. Confirm the model number and region before treating the value as applicable. Prices, stock and buying options are time-sensitive, so use the live listing for the final decision.
No checkout option appears
That may be expected. Buy buttons and Google Pay are limited to eligible listings and transactions. Continue on the retailer or manufacturer site instead of treating the missing button as a browser error.
The selection tool gives a poor comparison
Adjust the box so it includes the product names and the relevant headings, but excludes unrelated recommendations or advertisements. If a table is wider than the selection, compare two smaller groups rather than selecting a page region that omits labels. You can then ask a second question about the remaining models using the same criteria.

- Name the products or select the relevant screen area.
- List the comparison criteria in priority order.
- Ask Gemini to identify missing or conflicting information.
- Open product cards and links for the full description, reviews and buying options.
- Verify model, specifications, price, availability, warranty and returns on the seller or manufacturer page.
- Use the appropriate account, country and device; do not assume Android Chrome has the desktop feature.
For a repeatable comparison, save the same criteria for every model: price, dimensions, weight, material, warranty and the feature that matters most for your use. Ask one final question that lists unresolved fields. This prevents a polished summary from concealing that one product has no displayed warranty or that prices refer to different editions.
