The most durable method is to import an Instagram data export into WordPress. Request a JSON export containing your Posts, download Instagram’s ZIP file, and upload it through Tools → Import → Own Your Memories. The importer creates native WordPress posts, stores the images in your Media Library, and uses the first image in each post as its featured image.
Use a live embed only when you need a public Instagram post, Reel, carousel, or profile to remain connected to Instagram. A local archive gives you files and content under your site’s control; an embed depends on Meta’s APIs, privacy rules, and plugin compatibility.

“Archive” can mean two different things in WordPress. Decide which outcome you need before starting:

For preservation, import the archive first and keep the original ZIP outside WordPress. Add embeds separately when a page needs a live social reference. An embed is not a backup: if the Instagram URL, account privacy, endpoint, or policy changes, the WordPress display can fail.

What the Instagram-to-WordPress import contains
Own Your Memories reads Instagram’s account-data export and turns supported entries into ordinary WordPress content. Its documented behavior is:
- Imported entries become native WordPress posts rather than remote Instagram cards.
- Imported images are copied into the WordPress Media Library.
- The first image in each imported post is assigned as its featured image.
- Captions and dates can be reviewed before publication, along with post status and categories.
The importer is deliberately not a complete account clone. The documented exclusions are Stories, Reels, profile photos, and saved items. If those assets matter, preserve them through the appropriate Instagram export or another manual process; do not assume that selecting Posts captures them.

Step 1: Request the correct Instagram export
- Open Instagram’s settings. In the Instagram app or website, open Settings, then choose Accounts Center.
- Go to Your information and permissions → Download your information.
- Start a download request for the Instagram account that contains the photos.
- When Instagram asks for a format, select JSON. Do not choose HTML for this workflow.
- Choose Posts as the information category. Select the date range you want to preserve rather than assuming the request covers every year.
- Submit the request and wait for Instagram’s email or download notification. Instagram packages the result as a ZIP file.
- Download the ZIP to a location where you can retain it as the original archive. Do not edit or reorganize the files before importing unless the importer’s current instructions specifically require it.
The delivery time and exact confirmation screens can change as Instagram updates Accounts Center. What matters for this importer is that the downloaded package contains the JSON Posts export and that you retain the untouched ZIP as a separate backup.
Step 2: Import the ZIP into WordPress
- Sign in to the WordPress dashboard for the site that will hold the archive.
- Open Tools → Import.
- Choose Own Your Memories. If it is not installed, install and activate it from the importer screen or the plugin’s WordPress.org page.
- Upload the Instagram ZIP file when prompted. Use the ZIP produced by the JSON request; an HTML export will not be parsed.
- Allow the importer to create posts and copy media. Large archives can take time and may be limited by your host’s upload-size, memory, or execution-time settings.
- When processing finishes, open several imported posts rather than publishing the entire batch immediately.
The importer’s documented path and media behavior are described on its WordPress.org page. A successful upload is not the same as a successful editorial import, so inspect the resulting content before making it public.

Step 3: Review the imported posts before publishing
Treat the first import as a content review pass. Check representative posts from the beginning, middle, and end of the selected date range.

Confirm post status and organization
- Set the intended status—draft, private, scheduled, or published—according to your site’s workflow.
- Assign categories that make sense for your archive. Instagram’s original organization does not automatically become a useful WordPress taxonomy.
- Check dates and time zones. A post can display a different calendar date if Instagram’s timestamp and WordPress site time-zone settings differ.
- Look for duplicate posts if you have imported the same export more than once. Do not delete anything until you have identified which copy has the correct media and metadata.
Check captions and images
- Open the editor and read captions for line breaks, mentions, hashtags, and characters that may not have transferred as expected.
- Verify that the first image is the intended featured image. Change it manually when a carousel’s first frame is not the image you want on archive pages.
- Open Media → Library and confirm that imported files are present, have usable filenames, and display at the expected dimensions.
- Open the post on the front end and test every image in a carousel or gallery, not just the thumbnail in the editor.
Check privacy and accessibility
- Decide whether the archive should be public, restricted to logged-in users, or private. Importing a photo does not automatically reproduce Instagram’s original audience controls.
- Add meaningful alternative text to important images. Instagram captions are not a substitute for image-specific alt text.
- Remove or revise captions that disclose personal information no longer appropriate for the WordPress audience.
Protect the archive after importing
Once the files are local, the archive becomes part of the WordPress site. Keep the original Instagram ZIP in separate storage in case a later cleanup, migration, or plugin problem damages the imported copy.
- Back up the WordPress database, which contains post content, dates, statuses, and taxonomy assignments.
- Back up the WordPress uploads directory, which contains the imported image files and generated image sizes.
- Test that a backup can actually be restored before treating it as your only recovery path.
- Record the Instagram export date and the date range selected, so a later incremental export can be distinguished from the original archive.
- After WordPress or plugin updates, open several old archive posts and confirm that images still load.
Keeping both the source ZIP and a restorable WordPress backup protects against two different failures: losing the original export and losing the site’s processed content.
When a live Instagram embed is the better choice
A live embed is useful when the page should show a public Instagram item as Instagram presents it, with a link back to the account and current social context. It is not appropriate when your primary requirement is independent preservation.
Meta’s official Meta Embeds plugin supports public Instagram image posts, carousel posts, Reels, and profiles. Its readme says it uses Meta’s tokenless oEmbed APIs, so it requires no app creation, access token, or API configuration. The published requirements are WordPress 5.9 or later and PHP 7.4 or later. Review the current Meta Embeds readme before installation because requirements and supported content can change.

Install and use Meta Embeds
- In WordPress, open Plugins → Add New.
- Search for Meta Embeds, install the official plugin, and activate it. The alternative is downloading the release ZIP from the Meta Embeds repository and uploading it through Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin.
- Open the post or page where the Instagram content should appear.
- Paste a supported public Instagram URL on its own line in the editor. Do not wrap it in custom HTML unless your theme or editor requires a specific block.
- Save a draft and preview the page. Confirm that the embed renders, links to the intended account, and remains readable on a narrow screen.
- Publish only after checking the page while logged out or in a private browser window. A public-looking preview viewed while logged in can hide privacy or permission problems.
The plugin registers the provider so WordPress can resolve the URL and render the returned embed. A private post, deleted post, age-restricted content, or a URL that the provider does not support will not behave like a durable local image.
Why old Instagram embed instructions stopped working
Many older tutorials say to paste an Instagram URL into WordPress’s standard embed block and expect it to work without additional setup. That advice is dated. WordPress documentation records that Facebook closed the old Instagram oEmbed endpoint and that the legacy block stopped working after October 24, 2020. The Instagram embed documentation and the general Embeds documentation describe that historical change.
Those older instructions also refer to a developer account, app ID, and authentication token. Do not follow them as if they were the current no-configuration path. For a live public embed, use the current Meta Embeds route and verify its readme against your WordPress and PHP versions.
How WordPress resolves an embed technically
WordPress does not normally copy a provider’s complete page HTML into your post. It sends the URL through its oEmbed discovery and provider-whitelisting process, then stores or renders the provider’s response. This keeps the editor content relatively small, but it leaves presentation dependent on the remote service.

WordPress’s oEmbed handbook explains provider registration, discovery, and whitelisting. A failure can therefore originate in the URL, provider registration, Instagram privacy, a blocked outbound request, a changed endpoint, or a plugin/theme conflict—not only in the editor block.

Local archive versus embed: practical decision rules
Choose a local import when ownership matters
Import when you need the photos to remain available if the Instagram account is deleted, made private, suspended, or changed. Native posts can be searched, categorized, edited, migrated, and included in your normal WordPress backup plan.
Choose an embed when live attribution matters
Embed when the value is the current Instagram presentation, a direct path to the public account, or social interaction. Accept that the page is displaying a remote service rather than preserving a self-contained copy.
Use both for a layered archive
A common arrangement is to import the historical Posts that must be preserved, then place live embeds on a “Follow our Instagram” or campaign page. Keep archive posts independent so a temporary Meta outage does not remove the historical record.

Troubleshooting common import problems
The importer rejects the file
Confirm that you requested JSON, selected Posts, and uploaded Instagram’s original ZIP. Own Your Memories does not read HTML exports. If the ZIP was unpacked and recompressed, obtain a fresh download and try the untouched file.
Only part of the date range appears
Check the date range selected in Accounts Center and compare it with the timestamps in the export. A request limited to a year or custom interval cannot import posts outside that interval. Request another JSON export for the missing interval rather than assuming the importer deleted content.

Posts exist but images are missing
Inspect Media → Library, then check the server’s upload limit, PHP memory limit, and execution time. A host can accept the ZIP while a long-running media operation times out. Process smaller date ranges, increase limits within your hosting plan, or ask the host to review the failed request logs.
The wrong image is featured
The documented rule is that the first image becomes the featured image. Edit the post and choose a different image from the Media Library when the first carousel frame is not the right cover.
Captions or dates look wrong
Open the post in the editor, correct formatting, and verify the site’s WordPress time-zone setting. Preserve the original ZIP before making bulk edits so you can compare or re-import if necessary.
The live embed appears as a plain URL
Make sure the URL is public, supported, and placed on its own line. Confirm that Meta Embeds is active and that the site meets WordPress 5.9-plus and PHP 7.4-plus requirements. Test with a current public image post before diagnosing a particular Reel or profile. If it still fails, check caching, firewall, outbound HTTP restrictions, and theme or optimization plugins that alter embeds.
An embed works in preview but not for visitors
Test while logged out. The Instagram item may be private, restricted, or visible only to your account. Also check whether a consent, privacy, or script-blocking layer prevents the remote embed from loading for public visitors.
Maintenance checklist for an Instagram archive
- Keep the original JSON ZIP outside the web server.
- Back up both the database and uploads directory after import.
- Review a sample of captions, dates, categories, featured images, and image URLs.
- Confirm the intended privacy status for every batch before publishing.
- Document which date ranges have been imported so future exports do not create accidental duplicates.
- Recheck Meta Embeds and WordPress compatibility before depending on live content; endpoint and policy behavior can change.
- Periodically open representative archive posts and restore-test a backup.
Recommended workflow
For most site owners, the safest sequence is straightforward: request a JSON Posts export, import it with Own Your Memories, review and categorize the native posts, back up the database and uploads, and retain the source ZIP. Add Meta Embeds only for public content that benefits from a live Instagram presentation. This separates preservation from presentation, so a change in Instagram’s service does not erase the archive you meant to keep.
