Best practice: save the public profile and each required post as original PNG or JPEG screenshots, record the canonical URL and UTC capture time, then assemble copies into a PDF and run OCR while retaining the original image layer. This preserves what was visible, makes captions and usernames searchable, and leaves an audit trail even when TikTok does not allow a video download.
What a TikTok archive actually preserves
An archive is a time-stamped record of the public page as it appeared when you captured it. It can show the profile name, username, profile photo, bio, follower or following counts when displayed, the visible post grid, captions, dates, hashtags, and engagement context. TikTok says that, depending on an account’s privacy settings, posts may be visible to and shared by anyone on or off TikTok, even without a TikTok account; the name, username, and profile photo are always visible.
A screenshot does not prove that the account, post, or count will remain online. Pages can be edited, deleted, made private, or displayed differently to another visitor. For formal evidence, preserve the untouched image files, the capture details, and a manifest rather than relying on a PDF alone.

For an investigation, moderation record, dispute, or compliance file, keep both: immutable PNG/JPEG originals and a convenient searchable PDF derivative.
Prepare a capture checklist
- Use the public, canonical profile URL and write down the exact username.
- Set your device clock or capture process to record UTC, not only local time.
- Decide which posts are in scope: every visible post, a date range, specific URLs, or posts matching a keyword.
- Use a consistent viewport and browser zoom for every page. If responsive layout matters, capture a second viewport and label it.
- Create a folder with a stable naming scheme, such as
YYYY-MM-DDTHH-mm-ssZ_profile_username. - Plan a manifest with filename, source URL, capture time, post or page identifier, download status, and (for formal evidence) a cryptographic hash.
- Do not sign in to another person’s account or use automation to defeat a restriction.
Step-by-step: capture the public profile in a browser
1. Record identity and time first
- Open the profile’s public URL in a normal browser window.
- Copy the address exactly as shown after the page finishes loading. Record the displayed username, profile name, and the UTC time in your manifest.
- Save a first screenshot that includes the browser address bar if your evidence rules require visible URL context. Also save a clean page-only screenshot for publication or analysis.
2. Capture the profile header
Capture the avatar, display name, username, bio, links shown in the profile, follower and following counts if displayed, and any visible account label. Keep enough surrounding page to show that these details belong to the profile rather than a search result. A full-page capture is useful when the profile grid extends below the fold; otherwise take sequential, overlapping screenshots and number them.
3. Capture the visible post grid in order
Scroll from the top down without rearranging the page. Capture each viewport before moving on, with a small overlap between consecutive images. Record the row and column position or the post URL so that someone can reconstruct the grid. If lazy-loaded thumbnails appear only after scrolling, wait for them to render before capturing. Do not infer that an empty tile means a deleted post; record exactly what the page displayed.

4. Open and capture each required post
- Open the post from the grid and copy its URL.
- Capture the username, date shown, caption, hashtags, media, and visible likes, comments, shares, or other engagement context.
- For a carousel, capture every visible photo or video frame that is in scope and note the slide position.
- For a video, capture the post page and a representative frame or the complete player view required by your purpose. A screenshot records the visible player state; it is not a substitute for the underlying video file.
5. Use TikTok’s own download control when it is offered
TikTok documents Save video and Save photo controls. Its support wording is explicit: “If you don’t have the option to save a video, this means the creator doesn’t allow it.” Download permission is per post, so one post may be downloadable while another is not. Save only when the control is present, and record whether the result was downloaded or unavailable.
6. When downloading is disabled
Do not use a third-party downloader, deceptive login prompt, automated scraping script, or any technique intended to bypass the creator’s setting. Instead, preserve a screenshot of the post page, its URL, username, date shown, caption, and visible engagement context. Add download_status: unavailable to the manifest and explain that the screenshot is a record of what was visible at capture time.

Turn the screenshots into a searchable PDF
Assemble in a defensible order
Choose one order and document it: profile header followed by grid order, chronological order by the dates shown, or a case-specific order. Put a short cover page in the derivative PDF with the profile URL, username, capture window in UTC, and a note that the pages are screenshots. Do not edit the original image files to add annotations; put annotations in a separate copy or in the manifest.
Run OCR without discarding the image
- Import the PNG/JPEG copies into an OCR-capable PDF editor or document workflow.
- Run OCR using the language(s) visible in the posts. Keep the screenshot as the page’s image layer and add an invisible text layer rather than replacing the image with extracted text.
- Export the searchable PDF as a new file. Keep the original images and the pre-OCR PDF if your tool creates one.
- Search for every username, date, hashtag, and number that matters to your case.
- Spot-check the OCR against the screenshots. Stylized fonts, animated overlays, emojis, small counters, and text embedded in video frames are common sources of errors.
OCR improves findability, not authenticity. If OCR changes a character or number, the screenshot is the visual authority; correct the index or add a note rather than altering the image.
Manifest, hashes, and storage
A practical manifest can be CSV or JSON. Include:
- the original filename and derivative PDF page number;
- the exact profile or post URL;
- username and any post identifier visible in the URL;
- capture timestamp in UTC and the device or workflow used;
- download status: downloaded, unavailable, or not applicable;
- image dimensions and file type;
- a SHA-256 hash for each original when the archive may be used as formal evidence;
- notes about login state, viewport, missing media, or unusual page behavior.
Keep an untouched, read-only copy and a working copy. Back up both separately. A hash helps show that a file did not change after capture; it does not prove that the page itself was genuine or continuously available.

Official TikTok APIs: when they fit and when they do not
Display API
TikTok’s Display API documents /v2/user/info/, /v2/video/list/, and /v2/video/query/ for authorized applications. It can provide public profile identity and public-video metadata when the app has the required permissions. Metadata is not the same as a visual archive: it may omit layout, overlays, comments, or the exact appearance of a page.
Data Portability API
The Data Portability API is an authorized-user export flow. It requires authorization, a request ID, and a streamed ZIP download of requested profile or video data. It is suitable for an account holder’s own export, not an anonymous exporter for someone else’s public profile.

Law-enforcement preservation requests
TikTok’s Law Enforcement Guidelines, last updated April 25, 2025, describe an initial 90-day preservation period for formal law-enforcement requests. That period does not apply to an ordinary personal screenshot archive. If a matter may require legal preservation, follow the applicable legal process instead of treating a personal capture as a platform hold.

Quality-control checklist before you deliver the archive
- Every file opens and has a matching manifest row.
- The profile URL, username, capture time, and page or post identifier are recorded.
- Grid screenshots are in a documented order with no unexplained gaps.
- Each required post has its caption, date shown, URL, and visible context.
- Download-disabled posts are represented by screenshots rather than unauthorized copies.
- The PDF is searchable, but the original image layer remains visible and unchanged.
- Critical OCR fields were checked against the images.
- Original files, hashes, and the final PDF are stored separately from working edits.
- The archive describes what was visible at capture time and does not claim that the account will remain online.
FAQ
Can I archive a profile without a TikTok account?
A public profile may be viewable without signing in, but visibility depends on the account and post settings. Capture only what is publicly displayed and do not attempt to defeat a login or privacy boundary.
Is a searchable PDF better evidence than screenshots?
It is better for finding text, but not inherently more authentic. Keep the original screenshots and treat the OCR PDF as a searchable derivative.
Can I prove when a TikTok post was created?
You can record the date TikTok displays and the UTC time you captured it. A personal archive cannot independently prove that the displayed date or the post’s future availability is permanent.
Should I archive comments too?
Only if comments are within your stated scope. Capture the visible comment context, URL, and time, and document whether the view was partial or fully expanded.

Can TikTok’s APIs replace screenshots?
For an authorized application or an account owner’s export, the Display API or Data Portability API may provide structured data. They do not automatically preserve the visual layout that screenshots document.

How long should I keep the original screenshots?
Keep them for the same retention period as the matter they document, with the manifest and hashes stored alongside them; the searchable PDF should be treated as a derivative.
What if the profile becomes private after capture?
Your archive still records what was publicly visible at the recorded time, but it does not grant continuing access or prove that later viewers could see the same material.
Can OCR read text inside a TikTok video?
Only when the text is visible in the captured frame and the OCR engine can recognize it. Animated, stylized, small, or partially covered text must be checked manually against the image.
