Save the exact review URL in Internet Archive’s Save Page Now, then open and verify the returned replay before the page changes. For a defensible record, keep that public replay URL alongside a local PDF or HTML copy, a screenshot, the capture timestamp, and the original URL. The archive is useful for sharing and citation; your local copy protects you if a replay is incomplete or a service later cannot load an asset.
What to do first
Do not wait for the review to disappear. Copy its complete address now, including the article slug, language path, and any query parameters that affect the page. Submit that exact URL to Internet Archive’s Save Page Now. The service attempts to save the page and its images and CSS and returns a replay address intended for later access. It normally handles one page at a time, not an entire publication or site.
- Copy the canonical URL. Use the address that opens the review, and note whether it redirects to another address. Keep both the URL you submitted and the final address shown after loading.
- Submit it to Save Page Now. Wait for the save operation to finish rather than closing the tab as soon as it starts.
- Open the replay immediately. Check the title, reviewer or byline, publication date, full text, rating or score, images, and important links. A successful submission does not prove that every asset replayed correctly.
- Record the capture time. Copy the timestamp displayed by the archive, preferably in UTC when it is available.
- Make a local backup. Export a PDF or HTML file and take a screenshot of the rendered page when the review matters to your work.
- Preserve citation details. Store the original URL, replay URL, capture date and time, title, byline, publication date, and any notes about missing media or scripts.
Internet Archive’s guidance says the Save Page Now result gives you a permanent URL for the page. Treat “permanent” as a stable public reference, not as a guarantee that every embedded video, comment, advertisement, login area, or script will work forever.

Open the replay in a fresh browser tab and inspect it as a reader would. Compare it with the live page while the live page is still available, but do not assume the live page and replay will render identically.

Content checklist
- Exact headline, including punctuation and subtitle.
- Reviewer’s name and visible publication date.
- Every paragraph of the review, including pull quotes, captions, and score explanations.
- Hero image and inline images; open each important image in the replay if possible.
- Visible rating, star count, letter grade, or numerical score.
- Links that establish context, such as the film title, release date, or referenced interviews.
- Disclosures, corrections, update notices, and editor’s notes.
What an incomplete replay looks like
Missing styles, an empty image frame, a “please enable JavaScript” message, a sign-in prompt, a video player that never loads, or text that stops midway are all reasons to mark the capture as partial. Record exactly what is absent. If the review is paywalled or login-gated, the archive may not have had access to the portion you could see while authenticated.
The Library of Congress explains that archived collections receive quality review and that capture dates can change as you navigate interconnected archive records. Use the timestamp attached to the specific replay you are citing, not a date inferred from a search result or a neighboring record.
Save a private copy as well as the public replay
A public replay is easiest for another writer to open, while a local file preserves what your browser actually displayed. Keep both when the review could affect an editorial decision, fact check, dispute, or legal record.
PDF export
- Open the live page or the verified replay in a desktop browser.
- Use the browser’s print command and choose Save as PDF.
- Enable background graphics if the score, labels, or image treatment is important.
- Check the resulting PDF from the first page to the last page, including image pages and footnotes.
- Name the file with the capture date, for example
film-review-2026-10-16.pdf, and store the original URL in the file’s notes or a companion text file.
HTML and screenshot export
Use the browser’s “Save page” command when you need selectable text or a folder of downloaded assets. Then open the saved HTML file offline. Relative links, scripts, lazy-loaded images, and fonts may not survive, so do not treat an HTML save as automatically complete.
Take a full-page screenshot of the rendered review, plus a separate screenshot of any score, correction notice, or section that is easy to miss in a PDF. Keep the image format and dimensions unchanged, and record which browser and operating system produced it if visual fidelity matters.
How to cite the archived review
Cite the review as a normal webpage and then add the archive information. A practical record contains:

- Reviewer or author.

- Publication or site name.
- Original publication date, if shown.
- Original review URL.
- Internet Archive replay URL.
- Capture date and time, with UTC when available.
For example, your notes can state: Author, “Review title,” publication, original date, original URL. Archived in Internet Archive at replay URL, captured 16 October 2026 14:32 UTC. Adapt punctuation to the citation style your publication uses. The important distinction is between the date the review was published and the date the archived copy was captured.

If the submitted address redirected, retain both addresses. A later editor may change the slug, canonical tag, or destination while leaving the old link functional. Recording the final redirected URL lets another person distinguish the version you actually read from a later page at the same address.
Finding an older version after an edit
Use Internet Archive’s URL search and date-range controls to locate earlier captures. A timeline view lets you select a capture date and open the page as it appeared then. Work from the exact review URL first; searching only the site name can return a homepage, tag page, or a different article.
- Enter the review URL in the archive’s URL lookup.
- Choose a date range that brackets the edit or removal.
- Open candidate timestamps one by one.
- Compare headline, byline, date, body, score, images, and corrections.
- Copy the replay URL for the version that supports your claim.
Do not infer that two captures are identical because they share a date. Dynamic pages can change between crawls, and a capture may contain a mixture of resources fetched at different times. Note the exact timestamp and any visible differences.
When Save Page Now fails
Save Page Now is not guaranteed to capture every site. Internet Archive identifies crawl restrictions and some SSL configurations as causes of failure. Login requirements, paywalls, heavy client-side scripting, and media loaded from separate services can also produce an incomplete replay.

Retry with the exact address
First remove tracking parameters that are not needed to open the article, but keep parameters that select the language, edition, or review itself. Copy the canonical address from the page source or the browser’s final address bar, then submit it again. Check whether an earlier capture already exists before repeatedly submitting the same failing URL.

Capture the important state locally
If the page is visible to you but the archive cannot fetch it, immediately export a PDF, save HTML, and take screenshots. Include the URL and capture time in a text file stored beside those files. A local copy is private and may be harder for a third party to verify, but it preserves the material you could actually see.
Use a separate public snapshot
Archive.today describes its service as a “time capsule for web pages” that creates a snapshot intended to remain available if the original disappears. Use it as a secondary public snapshot when the first archive cannot capture the page, and label it clearly as a separate archive in your notes and citations. Do not silently substitute one service’s timestamp or replay URL for another’s.
Know what cannot be archived reliably
- Login-only text: an archive crawler may never receive the authenticated content.
- Paywalled paragraphs: the replay may contain only the public teaser.
- Video and audio: the player shell can appear while the media remains unavailable.
- Comments: comments may load from an API and be absent from the capture.
- Interactive scores or galleries: a script-dependent interface may replay as a blank area.
- Personalized pages: region, cookie, or account state can change what the crawler sees.
Describe these limits in your record instead of calling the capture a complete copy.

- Original URL and final redirected URL.
- Archive service name and replay URL.
- Capture date and time, preferably UTC.
- Title, reviewer, publication date, and visible score.
- Local PDF or HTML file.
- Screenshot of the rendered page and any critical section.
- Notes on missing images, scripts, comments, video, paywall, or login content.
- File names that include the capture date and a checksum or version label if your team requires chain-of-custody records.

The replay opens, but the article is blank
Try another capture timestamp and inspect the page source or browser console for a script-dependent shell. If the live page still works, make a local PDF and screenshot immediately. Record the blank replay as an unsuccessful or partial capture rather than citing it as proof of the text.
The title is present but images are missing
Check whether images were loaded lazily or hosted on a separate domain. Scroll through the live page before saving a local copy so lazy images render, then note which images are absent from the public replay.
The archive shows a different score
Verify the capture timestamp, not just the calendar date. Scores can be edited independently of the prose. Preserve the exact replay that displays the score you are citing and include that timestamp in your citation.
The URL now redirects to a new review
Search the old address by date range and retain the old and new URLs. A redirect does not establish that the current destination contains the earlier wording.
The page is blocked by a paywall or login
Do not attempt to bypass access controls. Archive only content you are authorized to view, keep a local record of the visible portion, and state in your notes that restricted material was not captured.

Privacy, permission, and evidence handling
Public archives can expose URLs and page contents to anyone who can find the replay. Avoid submitting pages containing personal information, private dashboards, unpublished drafts, or secrets unless you have permission and understand the archive’s policies. For sensitive editorial material, a local file stored under your organization’s access controls may be more appropriate than a public snapshot.
Preservation does not grant permission to republish a review. Use the archive to identify and cite a version, and follow the copyright, terms, and privacy rules that apply to the original publisher and your own publication.

Can I archive an entire movie-review site in one submission?
No. Save Page Now generally saves a single page. Submit the review URL and separately capture other pages that are material to your record.
Which timestamp belongs in a citation when the archive shows several dates?
Use the timestamp attached to the exact replay containing the version you read, preferably expressed in UTC, and keep the original publication date as a separate field.
Is a screenshot enough to prove every word of a review?
A screenshot proves what was rendered in that image, but it is harder to search and cannot preserve hidden or interactive content. Pair it with the replay URL and a local PDF or HTML copy when the text matters.
Should I list an archive snapshot as the review’s publication date?
No. Cite the review’s displayed publication date separately from the archive capture date; they describe different events.
