If you lost a Michigan job or your hours were substantially reduced, apply through the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) as soon as you become unemployed. File online in MiWAM through MiLogin at Michigan.gov/UIA, or call 1-866-500-0017 Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Online filing is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You must also register for work, certify every required period, report gross wages for the week they were earned, and complete three unique work-search activities each week beginning July 19, 2026.

UIA decides eligibility from your wage history, separation circumstances, and continuing requirements. A typical first payment takes about three weeks after filing, although an unresolved question can take longer.

What to do immediately after losing your job

Do not wait for a former employer to tell you whether you qualify. Start your claim when you are unemployed or underemployed and able to seek suitable full-time work. Gather your records first, then submit one claim through UIA.

Information and documents to gather

  • Michigan driver license or state identification.
  • Social Security number.
  • If you are not a U.S. citizen, your USCIS number and work-authorization expiration date.
  • For every employer during the last 18 months: legal name, mailing address, first day worked, last day worked, pay rate, pay frequency, and the reason work ended.
  • Bank routing and account numbers if you want direct deposit. Online-only digital bank accounts cannot be used for Michigan unemployment direct deposit.

Have the facts in front of you even if you expect your employer to dispute the separation. UIA reviews employer and claimant information separately.

Choose an application method

Method How to use it Access and practical difference
Online MiWAM Go to Michigan.gov/UIA, sign in to MiLogin, and open MiWAM. Available 24/7. You need a MiLogin account and can usually enter detailed employer and payment information in one session.
Telephone Call 1-866-500-0017. Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Use this route if online access is not workable or you need telephone assistance.

Use only one route for the initial claim. Starting duplicate claims can create avoidable identity or claim-record problems.

Step-by-step: file a Michigan unemployment claim online

  1. Create or access MiLogin. Open Michigan.gov/UIA and sign in to MiLogin. Select the MiWAM unemployment service rather than a general state account service.
  2. Enter identity information. Provide your identification, Social Security number, and, when applicable, USCIS and work-authorization details. Check every digit before submitting.
  3. List all employers from the last 18 months. Enter each employer’s name and address, dates worked, pay rate and frequency, and your first and last day worked.
  4. Describe the separation accurately. Select the event that actually ended or reduced the work: layoff, lack of work, discharge, quit, or another listed reason. Explain facts rather than arguing a legal conclusion. A discharge does not automatically disqualify you, and a quit does not automatically qualify you; UIA evaluates the circumstances.
  5. Select payment information. Add an eligible bank account and routing number if choosing direct deposit. Do not enter an online-only digital bank account that Michigan’s system cannot accept.
  6. Review and submit. Save the confirmation or claim number and retain a copy of what you submitted. Check MiWAM alerts after filing because UIA may request clarification or documents.

If you apply by phone, have the same information ready. The representative will need employer, wage, identity, and separation details, and you should record the date of the call and any confirmation number.

Register for work before your first certification

A claim is not complete merely because the application was submitted. Create a job-seeker account at MiTalent.org, then complete the required Michigan Works! registration and verification step. Depending on the instructions you receive, this may be in person or virtual. Follow the specific direction in your UIA account; do not assume that creating the MiTalent account alone satisfies the requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Complete registration before the first certification whenever possible. If UIA tells you that an exception applies, keep that notice with your claim records.

Understand Michigan eligibility rules

To continue receiving benefits, you generally must be unemployed or underemployed, able and available for suitable full-time work, actively seeking work, and properly registered for work. You also must meet Michigan’s wage requirements and answer UIA requests by their deadlines.

Standard wage test for 2026 benefit years

For a 2026 benefit year, the standard test requires all of the following:

  • At least $5,328 in one quarter.
  • Wages in at least two quarters.
  • Total base-period wages of at least 1.5 times the wages in your highest quarter.

UIA may examine an alternate base period or an alternate earnings qualifier when the standard calculation does not establish eligibility. Which completed quarters are used depends on the dates and wage record for your claim; UIA’s Monetary Determination states the calculation it applied.

Being fired, laid off, or leaving voluntarily

A layoff for lack of work and a discharge are not decided by labels alone. UIA asks what happened and may contact the employer. Give a complete, consistent account and respond to any fact-finding request by the deadline shown in MiWAM.

Michigan law effective July 17, 2026 also allows a worker who left because of domestic violence or household safety to qualify when the other requirements are met. Explain the safety-related reason through the process and provide any information UIA requests.

How much Michigan unemployment pays

Weekly benefit rate

For 2026 claims, the weekly benefit rate is based on 4.1% of the highest quarter in the base period, subject to a $530 weekly maximum. The $530 cap applies to 2026 claims; it is not a promise that every eligible claimant receives that amount. Your Monetary Determination shows the rate UIA calculated.

How long payments can last

Eligible duration generally ranges from 14 to 26 weeks, determined by wage history. The number of payable weeks is not selected by the claimant and can differ even when two people have the same weekly rate.

Part-time work and partial benefits

If you are underemployed, you may still receive a partial payment. Report gross earnings for the calendar week in which you performed the work, not the week the employer deposited the money. Report all required earnings during certification; underreporting can create an overpayment or a fraud issue.

Certify every two weeks under the current system

Until Michigan’s planned MiUI change takes effect, UIA generally requires certification every two weeks. Use MiWAM or the MARVIN telephone system as instructed in your account.

  1. Watch MiWAM for the certification date and any account alert.
  2. Certify for only the weeks requested. Never certify twice for the same period.
  3. Answer whether you were able and available, sought work, worked, or earned wages.
  4. Enter gross part-time earnings in the calendar week earned.
  5. Submit the certification and save the confirmation.

A missed certification can stop payment even if the original claim was approved. If you miss a date, read the MiWAM instructions before attempting another submission; do not create a second claim to compensate.

Work-search requirement: three activities every week

For weeks beginning July 19, 2026, Michigan requires at least three unique work-search activities for every week claimed. The activities must be separate and must be documented. Missing the report can stop payment.

How to keep a defensible record

  • Record the date, organization or employer, and a short description immediately after each activity.
  • Keep application confirmations, messages, appointment details, or other evidence that the activity occurred.
  • Make the three activities unique; repeating the same action does not turn it into three searches.
  • Use the work-search categories and reporting instructions shown by UIA or Michigan Works!, because those instructions determine whether an activity counts.

Complete three activities in each week, not three activities across the entire two-week certification. Keep your log after submitting it in case UIA asks for verification.

What happens after you file

Monetary Determination

UIA reviews reported wages and issues a Monetary Determination showing whether the wage test was met, the weekly rate, and the potential duration. Check the determination against your pay records. A missing employer or incorrect quarter can change the result; use the response or appeal instructions on the notice if the figures are wrong.

Separation or eligibility questions

UIA may send an alert asking about why work ended, your availability, work search, identity, or another issue. Read the exact deadline and submit a complete answer through the channel named in the notice. Continue certifying while the issue is pending unless UIA tells you otherwise.

Payment timing

UIA says the first payment is often about three weeks after filing. That is an estimate, not a guarantee. Later payments generally follow successful certification. A fact-finding request, registration problem, wage mismatch, or missed certification can delay payment.

Michigan’s scheduled MiUI transition

UIA’s MiUI benefits system is scheduled to launch on November 9, 2026. After launch, UIA plans to move certifications and payments from every two weeks to weekly. The change is scheduled, so use the instructions and notices in your current UIA account rather than assuming the future schedule already applies.

Period What to expect
Before November 9, 2026 Follow the MiWAM or MARVIN certification date assigned to you, generally every two weeks.
On or after the planned MiUI launch Follow MiUI notices for weekly certification and payment instructions. System labels and sign-in directions may differ.

UIA Director Jason Palmer described the changes this way: “These are the most significant updates to Michigan’s unemployment system in years — and every worker needs to understand what’s changing.” Check your account notices whenever you certify, especially around the transition.

Common mistakes that delay or stop benefits

  • Waiting to apply: File when unemployment begins; do not wait for a separation letter if you already have the necessary facts.
  • Leaving out an employer: List every employer from the last 18 months, including short or part-time employment.
  • Using inconsistent dates: Compare your claim with pay stubs, schedules, and tax records before submitting.
  • Failing to register for work: Complete both the MiTalent account and the required Michigan Works! step unless UIA expressly tells you otherwise.
  • Missing the three-activity rule: Since July 19, 2026, complete and document three unique activities in every week claimed.
  • Reporting net rather than gross earnings: Report gross pay for the week you performed the work.
  • Certifying twice: Submit one certification for each assigned period.
  • Ignoring MiWAM alerts: A missed response deadline can hold or stop payment.
  • Entering an unusable bank account: Online-only digital bank accounts cannot receive Michigan direct deposit.
  • Assuming approval is automatic: UIA decides each claim from wage and separation records, even when a claimant appears to meet a general rule.

A practical filing checklist

  1. Collect identification, Social Security or USCIS information, 18 months of employer details, and eligible direct-deposit information.
  2. File one claim online through MiLogin and MiWAM, or call 1-866-500-0017 during its published hours.
  3. Save the confirmation and monitor MiWAM.
  4. Create the MiTalent.org job-seeker account and complete Michigan Works! registration or verification.
  5. Read the Monetary Determination and correct wage information through the process on the notice if needed.
  6. Certify on every assigned date through MiWAM or MARVIN; do not duplicate a certification.
  7. Complete and retain records of three unique work-search activities for every week claimed from July 19, 2026 onward.
  8. Report gross earnings in the week worked and answer every UIA alert by its deadline.
  9. Follow new instructions when the planned MiUI transition occurs on November 9, 2026.

When to contact UIA

Contact UIA when you cannot complete an identity step, your Monetary Determination omits wages, an alert asks for information you cannot interpret, or a payment remains stopped after you have answered the listed issue. Have your claim number, notice dates, employer information, and certification confirmations ready. For a new telephone application, the published number is 1-866-500-0017, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Keep copies of every submission and notice. UIA’s decision controls the claim, and the notice itself supplies the applicable response or appeal route.

Bottom line

Apply through Michigan UIA as soon as you lose work, using MiWAM online or the telephone line. Meet the wage and availability rules, complete MiTalent and Michigan Works! registration, certify on schedule, report gross wages in the week earned, and document three unique work-search activities every week. Because Michigan’s work-search rule and MiUI system are changing in 2026, rely on the current instructions and alerts in your UIA account.
