Apply through the official Arc System Works recruitment portal, choose the listing that matches your career stage and discipline, and submit a role-specific application with a clear portfolio or work sample. Fighting-game expertise is not required, and the company says playing its games does not affect selection. International candidates should check the regional listing carefully: Arc System Works Asia asks for a Japanese-language résumé/application in Word or PDF format by email.

Choose a route: new graduate, mid-career or international
New-graduate recruitment
Use the new-graduate development category if you are applying as a student or recent graduate under the conditions in the current posting. The published Q&A describes a process that generally includes an aptitude test, a work or portfolio review (作品審査), and approximately three interviews. The exact sequence and number can change, so follow the invitation and scheduling instructions you receive.

Mid-career recruitment
Select the mid-career development category when the listing requests professional experience. Compare the opening’s stated responsibilities with your shipped work, production role and technical ownership rather than applying solely because a job title sounds similar. A programmer listing, for example, describes work from specifications through coding, collaboration with planners to improve the game, and programmer-led proposals for optimization and efficiency.
Arc System Works Asia and other regional routes
The Arc System Works Asia recruitment page describes a separate route for international applicants. It requests a Japanese-language résumé/application in Word or PDF format sent by email and says candidates who pass document screening will be contacted separately. This is a regional instruction, not a blanket rule for every Arc System Works office or position. Confirm that the page applies to your location and target role before sending anything.
Build the application around what reviewers can verify
The new-graduate Q&A emphasizes action, willingness to challenge yourself, and evidence of what you intended, did and achieved. Across disciplines, a strong application makes four things easy to find:

- Your actions: the decisions, implementation, iteration and collaboration you personally handled.
- The result: a finished build, visual outcome, documented improvement or other result you can substantiate.
- Your reflection: what changed after testing or feedback and what you would do next.
Explain how you worked with teammates or considered the player. A technically impressive artifact is harder to assess when the reviewer cannot tell which parts you owned, why you made key choices or how the work reached a finished state.

Prepare and submit the application step by step
- Open the official recruitment portal. Read the complete listing, including tabs or attached instructions, before collecting files.
- Select the correct track and discipline. Use the new-graduate or mid-career development category, then choose the specific programmer, infrastructure, planner, designer/modeler, director or other opening.
- Record the listing’s constraints. Make a short checklist of location, eligibility, language, deadline, file type, file-size limit, required links and naming conventions.
- Choose two to four strongest work examples. Fewer well-explained, finished examples are more useful than a large collection that obscures your contribution. Use the quantity guidance for your discipline where the listing or Q&A provides it.
- Write a concise explanation for every example. State the objective, your role, tools, important decisions, collaboration, testing or iteration you can document, and the outcome.
- Package files in the requested formats. Use the exact Word, PDF, image, video, repository or other formats named by the listing. Test every link and confirm that permissions allow a reviewer to open it.
- Complete the online form or regional email submission. For the Asia route, follow the instruction to send the Japanese-language résumé/application in Word or PDF by email.
- Run a final completeness check. Verify names, dates, contact details, attachments, file extensions and portfolio URLs. The Q&A warns that typographical errors or missing submission materials can result in exclusion.
- Keep a copy of the submitted package. Save the exact files and text you sent so you can discuss them consistently during interviews.
What to show as a game programmer
Arc System Works’ Q&A says source-code readability is a key concern. Your submitted programming work does not have to be a game; reviewers focus on how the code is written and explained. A finished tool, simulation or other software project can therefore work if it demonstrates engineering judgment and is documented clearly.
Include readable implementation, not just a playable demo
- A repository or code sample with a logical structure and consistent naming.
- A short README explaining how to build or run the project, what you implemented and which parts are yours.
- Architecture decisions, such as module boundaries, data flow, state handling or resource management, with the reason for each important choice.
- Evidence of iteration: a bug you diagnosed, a design change you made after testing, or an efficiency improvement you can demonstrate honestly.
- A brief explanation of collaboration with a planner, designer or other teammate when the project was cross-functional.
Do not claim performance results, testing coverage or team responsibilities that you cannot document. If you measured an improvement, identify the original condition, the change and the way you measured it.
Use the language and tools the listing values
The Q&A identifies C++ as the main development language and Visual Studio as a principal environment. Show competent use of the tools named by the specific opening rather than adding a technology list with no supporting work. The current game-programmer description also values the ability to move from specifications to code, improve a game with planners, and propose optimization or efficiency measures.

English is described as advantageous because technical papers and books often appear first in English. It is not presented as universally mandatory. If you read technical material in English, mention how it influenced an implementation or solved a problem; do not imply that English alone qualifies you.

Build a designer or artist portfolio that is easy to review
The new-graduate Q&A recommends a portfolio that is simple to view, shows range and commitment, contains finished work, and demonstrates the ability to depict varied people. It gives a practical guideline of roughly four to five images per point or theme while stating that there is no single mandatory quantity. Use that as a way to show development and breadth, not as a quota to fill with weak images.
Organize each portfolio section
- Lead with a finished piece that represents the role you want.
- Show enough process to explain decisions without burying the final result.
- Identify your contribution when a work was collaborative.
- Use captions that state the brief, constraints, tools and what you learned.
- Include varied people, poses, expressions, environments or other subjects relevant to your discipline.
The Q&A names Photoshop, SAI, Clip Studio, Illustrator, Maya, 3ds Max and video-editing software among tools used by designers. A current game-designer listing also mentions office and document tools and welcomes Unreal Engine work experience. Tailor the selection to the exact opening: show the tools through finished work rather than presenting an unverified software inventory.
Prepare for planner, director and cross-functional roles
Planners
A proposal document is not mandatory according to the Q&A, but it can demonstrate planning skill. If you include one, make the player problem, core loop or feature objective, constraints, progression, interface assumptions and success criteria explicit. Explain how you would work with programmers and artists and what you would change after playtesting. A polished idea without implementation reasoning is less informative than a modest proposal with clear trade-offs.

Infrastructure and other technical roles
Describe reliability, deployment, automation, monitoring, security or operational improvements only when they are part of your actual work. Connect technical choices to the development team’s ability to build, test and ship. Follow the listing’s requested technologies and document formats instead of assuming that game-client experience is required.
Cross-disciplinary beginner knowledge is helpful but not mandatory. You do not need to present yourself as an expert in every function; show that you can communicate with adjacent disciplines and understand the consequences of your decisions.

Fighting-game knowledge
No. The official new-graduate Q&A states, 「格闘ゲームの知識が無くても構いません。」 It also says, 「弊社のゲーム経験の有無も選考には関わりませんのでご安心ください。」 In other words, having played Arc System Works games is not a selection requirement and game experience with the company does not affect the decision. Use portfolio space to prove your ability and initiative rather than trying to manufacture fandom.
Japanese and English
Language requirements depend on the office and listing. The Asia recruitment page specifically requests a Japanese-language application in Word or PDF by email. For other openings, read the stated requirements instead of assuming that Japanese is either always required or never needed. English can help with technical reading and email communication with overseas companies or creators, but the Q&A does not describe it as universally mandatory.

Understand the selection stages and avoid preventable rejection
The new-graduate process generally combines an aptitude test, work or portfolio review and about three interviews. Prepare to explain the same projects at different levels: a concise overview in an application, technical or creative decisions in an interview, and your collaboration and learning in behavioral questions.
Application-quality checklist
- Every required field is complete.
- Names of people, projects, tools and company information are spelled correctly.
- All requested attachments are present and open correctly.
- Portfolio links work without an account or permission request unless the listing says otherwise.
- Captions and README files are written for a reviewer who has not seen the project.
- Your explanations consider the reader: define uncommon terms and put the key result first.
- Dates and responsibilities match your résumé, portfolio and interview answers.
The Q&A specifically warns that typographical errors and missing materials can lead to exclusion. Proofreading is therefore part of the selection task, not cosmetic work.
Use historical figures carefully
An official new-graduate Q&A reported an application ratio of approximately 2.6% in October 2020. That is historical context, not a current acceptance-rate forecast: applicant numbers, openings and selection criteria can change. Likewise, a Tokyo Game Show selection-skip event described for 2024 was a past event. Do not treat it as a current application option unless Arc System Works publishes a new announcement.
How to compare openings before you apply
If more than one role appears suitable, score each listing against the same questions rather than submitting identical materials everywhere.

- Programmers: verify that code is readable, build instructions work and C++/Visual Studio experience is represented where relevant.
- Designers: ensure the portfolio is easy to view, varied, finished and captioned; include relevant 2D, 3D, video or Unreal Engine work when the listing calls for it.
- Planners and leads: show decisions, trade-offs and communication, not only ideas.
- International applicants: confirm whether the Asia route applies and submit the requested Japanese Word or PDF materials by the stated email method.
- Proofread, test links, check attachments and save the final submitted version.
The strongest Arc System Works application is not defined by fighting-game fandom or a particular number of portfolio pages. It is a complete, readable and role-specific package that lets reviewers see what you set out to do, what you actually did, how you worked with others and what you achieved.
