Apply for DPIIT startup recognition through the National Single Window System (NSWS), not through a private agent. In NSWS, choose Add Approvals → Central Approvals → Registration as a Startup, complete the self-certification form, upload your incorporation or registration certificate and supporting evidence, and submit it using the startup’s own contact details. Startup India says the application has no government fee and is typically processed within two working days after a successful submission, although that timing is an estimate rather than a guarantee.
Before filing, check the entity type, incorporation date, turnover, business activity and prohibited-formation rules. The current Startup India recognition summary uses different age and turnover limits for standard startups and DeepTech startups. A legacy version of the online form still displays older wording, so applicants close to a threshold should verify the live NSWS form and latest governing notification before self-certifying.
What DPIIT recognition is—and what it is not
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) recognition is an official status for eligible Indian startups. It confirms that the applicant meets the notified definition of a startup and can make the business eligible to apply for certain government benefits, schemes or exemptions where separate conditions are met.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Recognition is not the same as incorporation, a licence to operate, or automatic approval for every startup incentive. In particular, it does not itself grant the Section 80-IAC income-tax exemption. A recognised startup must make a separate application for that exemption, and the eligibility rules for the tax benefit are narrower. Startup India identifies private limited companies and limited liability partnerships incorporated after 1 April 2016 as entity categories that may apply separately under Section 80-IAC.

The recognition certificate is generated electronically and can be verified and downloaded from the portal after approval.
Check eligibility before opening the application
Startup India’s recognition page, updated 14 September 2026, describes the following requirements. Treat each as a condition to verify against your own records, not as a box to tick without evidence.
Permitted legal forms
The recognition page lists these entity forms:
- Private limited company
- Registered partnership firm
- Limited liability partnership (LLP)
- Cooperative society
An informal business, an unregistered partnership, or an individual who has not formed one of the listed entities cannot use the startup-recognition application as that entity.
Age and turnover limits
The current summary distinguishes standard startups from DeepTech startups:
| Applicant category | Maximum period from incorporation or registration | Turnover ceiling |
|---|---|---|
| Standard startup | Up to 10 years | Below ₹200 crore in any previous financial year |
| DeepTech startup | Up to 20 years | Below ₹300 crore in any previous financial year |
The figures are the limits stated on Startup India’s current recognition page. “Below” means the ceiling is not reached; do not assume that an entity at exactly ₹200 crore or ₹300 crore qualifies. Turnover is assessed for each relevant previous financial year, so collect the figures needed to answer the form accurately.
The legacy-threshold conflict you must resolve
A displayed Startup India form still contains older self-certification language referring to a 10-year period and a ₹100 crore turnover limit. Elsewhere in that same form, an explanatory note states ₹200 crore for non-DeepTech startups and ₹300 crore for DeepTech startups. The current recognition summary uses the newer ₹200 crore/₹300 crore figures, but the conflict remains material for an applicant near a limit.

Do not silently replace the current page’s figures with the old ₹100 crore wording, and do not assume that selecting “DeepTech” automatically grants the longer period or higher ceiling. Check the latest notification linked from the recognition page and the wording shown in the live NSWS application. If your age, turnover or classification is close to a boundary, obtain clarification from Startup India before submitting a self-certification.

Business activity and impact
Your entity must work toward at least one of the following outcomes:
- Innovation, development or improvement of products, services or processes; or
- A scalable business model with significant potential for employment generation or wealth creation.
The application is not asking only whether the company has a novel idea. Explain what is being developed or improved, who benefits, how the model can scale, and what evidence supports those statements.
Prohibited formation by splitting or reconstruction
An entity formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business is excluded. A new certificate of incorporation does not cure a prohibited restructuring. Keep a clear explanation of the origin of the venture and, where relevant, how its operations, assets and business model differ from an existing enterprise.
Documents and evidence to prepare
Prepare the files before starting the NSWS form so that you can answer consistently and avoid an incomplete submission.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Item | What to provide | Practical preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Incorporation or registration certificate | The official certificate for the applicant entity | The displayed form accepts PDF, PNG or JPG and shows a maximum file size of 5 MB. |
| Authorisation letter | Authorisation on the company’s letterhead | Name the person authorised to submit and ensure the letter is signed in accordance with the entity’s records. |
| Innovation or impact explanation | A concise, evidence-backed description of innovation, product/service/process development or improvement, or scalable employment/wealth-creation potential | Match each claim to a product description, customer problem, process change, technical result or measurable commercial pathway. |
| Supporting link or document | For example, a website, demonstration video, pitch deck or patent evidence | Use links that work without unusual permissions and documents that identify the applicant and the relevant product or service. |
| Validation-stage proof of concept | Evidence such as a prototype website, video or pitch deck | Show what exists today, not only a future roadmap. |
| Early-traction or scaling evidence | A video, pitch deck or website link with supporting material | Connect the evidence to adoption, operations, scalability or impact claims made in the form. |
The FAQ identifies the incorporation or registration certificate and the explanation of the startup’s work as the core requirements. The form then requests the authorisation letter and supporting material. Upload only evidence that substantiates the statements you make; a polished presentation without verifiable substance can leave the self-certification unsupported.

Write an evidence-led description
A useful description normally answers four questions in a few focused paragraphs:
- Problem: What customer, operational or social problem exists?
- Solution: What product, service or process does the entity develop or improve?
- Difference: What is technically, operationally or commercially improved compared with the relevant existing approach?
- Scale and impact: How can the model create employment or wealth, and what evidence indicates that it can scale?
Avoid unsupported words such as “unique,” “first” or “revolutionary.” The form is a self-certification, and the portal warns that recognition may be revoked if information is false or required documents are not uploaded.
Step-by-step: submit through NSWS
1. Confirm the applicant’s details
Use the legal name, incorporation or registration number, registered address and contact details that match the entity’s official records. Decide who will be the authorised applicant and ensure that person can access the company’s email and mobile number during filing.
2. Create or access an NSWS account
Open an account on the National Single Window System using the startup’s own details. Startup India instructs the startup to file itself with its own mobile number and email. A consultant may help you understand compliance, but the portal account and submission should not be represented as an officially appointed intermediary service.
3. Add the central approval
- Sign in to the NSWS dashboard.
- Select Add Approvals.
- Choose Central Approvals.
- Find Registration as a Startup.
- Add that approval to your dashboard.
The approval name is important. Do not select a state registration or a different government incentive when your objective is the DPIIT recognition certificate.
4. Complete the recognition form
Enter the entity’s incorporation date, legal structure, turnover information and business details. Select the applicable stage or describe the current state of development when the form asks for validation, early traction or scaling evidence. Keep the wording consistent with your attached certificate, authorisation letter and supporting material.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
5. Upload the files
Attach the incorporation or registration certificate in one of the displayed formats—PDF, PNG or JPG—and keep it within the form’s shown 5 MB limit. Add the authorisation letter and the relevant website, video, pitch deck, patent evidence or proof-of-concept material. Check every link in a private browser window if possible, and make sure a reviewer can identify what the evidence demonstrates.
6. Review the self-certification
Read each declaration against the latest information available for the entity. Pay particular attention to the age and turnover wording because the legacy text in the form may not match the current recognition summary. Confirm that the entity was not created by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business and that the explanation supports innovation, improvement or scalable impact.
7. Submit and retain the acknowledgement
Submit the completed application from the startup’s account and save the acknowledgement, application details and uploaded files. Keep a copy of the exact description and evidence used; if the portal asks for an edit, you should be able to reproduce the submission accurately.
How long approval takes and what you receive
The Startup India portal FAQ says recognition is typically issued within two working days after successful submission. That is a typical estimate, not a guaranteed service level. Missing files, inaccessible links, inconsistent declarations or a request for clarification can extend the process.
Monitor the NSWS and Startup India account associated with the application. When approved, the system generates a verifiable DPIIT recognition certificate that you can download. Confirm that the legal name and registration details on the certificate are correct and retain the electronic file with your corporate records.
What to do if the application is marked incomplete
An incomplete application can be edited from the applicant’s account, according to the Startup India FAQ. Use the portal’s reason for incompleteness as a repair list rather than submitting the same files unchanged.

The FAQ states that after an application has been marked incomplete three times, it is rejected. A rejected application cannot be edited, and the FAQ says a new application may be filed after three months from the rejection email. Because portal rules can change, check the current dashboard instructions and the rejection communication before relying on that remedy.
Cost, agents and optional professional help
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry states: Ministry of Commerce and Industry does not charge any fee for DPIIT ‘Certificate of Recognition’ or ‘Certificate of Eligibility’ for startups.
Startup India also states: Application for DPIIT ‘Certificate of Recognition’ and ‘Certificate of Eligibility’ should be filed by the startup on its own, using own details/mobile no./email.
There is therefore no government application fee for the recognition certificate. The ministry says it has not appointed an agency, representative or franchise for this filing. Be cautious of anyone claiming to be an officially authorised DPIIT agent or demanding a mandatory processing charge.

Recognition versus tax exemption and other benefits
DPIIT recognition is a gateway status, not an automatic tax holiday. If the founders want to pursue the Section 80-IAC income-tax exemption, they must make a separate application and satisfy that programme’s conditions. Do not describe the recognition certificate to investors, customers or lenders as proof that the startup has already received a tax exemption.
Other schemes may have their own entity, sector, funding, incorporation-date or approval requirements. After receiving recognition, read the rules for each benefit separately and retain the evidence used for the original certification.
Final pre-submission checklist
- The applicant is a private limited company, registered partnership firm, LLP or cooperative society.
- The incorporation or registration date fits the applicable current age limit: up to 10 years for a standard startup or up to 20 years for DeepTech, subject to the live notification and form.
- Turnover is below the applicable current ceiling: ₹200 crore for a standard startup or ₹300 crore for DeepTech, with each previous financial year considered.
- The entity is pursuing innovation, development or improvement, or has credible potential for scalable employment or wealth creation.
- The entity was not formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business.
- The incorporation or registration certificate is legible and within the displayed 5 MB PDF, PNG or JPG limit.
- The authorisation letter is on company letterhead and identifies the authorised submitter.
- The website, video, pitch deck, patent evidence or proof-of-concept material directly supports the claims in the form.
- The application uses the startup’s own email address and mobile number.
- You have checked the current NSWS wording and latest notification if your age, turnover or DeepTech classification is near a threshold.
Once these checks are complete, submit under Central Approvals → Registration as a Startup, monitor the account for messages and download the verifiable certificate if the application is approved.
