To apply for an IPO through UPI, submit your bid through an eligible intermediary, enter your own UPI ID, then approve the separate funds-blocking mandate in a supported UPI app before the issue-specific deadline. A submission confirmation does not by itself prove that the mandate was accepted. The amount is normally blocked in your bank account under ASBA; it is debited only for shares allotted, while unused funds are released.

How the UPI IPO process works

UPI applications combine two actions that are easy to confuse:

  • Bid submission: You select the IPO, category, quantity and price through an eligible broker or other permitted intermediary.
  • Mandate authorization: A sponsor or escrow bank sends a UPI request asking permission to block the application amount. You approve that request with your UPI PIN.

SEBI describes syndicate members, registered stockbrokers, registrars and transfer agents, and depository participants as intermediary types that can support UPI IPO submissions. A bank or UPI app may be used to approve the mandate, but a bank app is not automatically an eligible bid-submission channel. Confirm the provider’s current service and registration before applying. See SEBI’s UPI IPO guidance.

The complete sequence is therefore: check the offer, submit the bid, watch for the mandate, approve it, verify acceptance, and keep enough money available until allocation is processed.

What you need before starting

An eligible application route

Use a registered intermediary that is permitted to accept public-issue applications. Your broker’s IPO section may submit the application, or another eligible intermediary may do so. Do not assume that every investment or banking app has this capability. The provider should clearly identify its public-issue service and the UPI flow it supports.

Your own bank account and UPI ID

The UPI ID must be linked to a bank account belonging to the applicant named in the IPO form. SEBI says third-party UPI IDs or bank accounts are not considered for allocation. If you are applying in your own name, do not enter a family member’s UPI ID merely because it has a higher balance or is easier to access.

Offer details and available funds

Read the issue’s official offer information for the opening and closing dates, investor category, lot size, price or price band, cut-off option, and mandate deadline. Keep at least the maximum amount that could be blocked in the linked account. A UPI mandate blocks funds rather than transferring the entire amount immediately, but the balance must still be available when the request is presented.

A supported UPI app and handle

Use only a UPI app and public-issue handle supported for IPO mandates. SEBI’s public-issue list records intermediary registrations as of March 7, 2025; entries can change, so check the live SEBI public-issue app and intermediary list rather than relying on a remembered handle.

Broker app submission versus bank app approval

These are complementary roles, not necessarily competing methods. One provider may offer both, but the functions remain separate in the transaction.

A bank app can be the place where you authorize the mandate without being the place where you submitted the bid. Conversely, an app that accepts the bid may not be the app that receives the authorization request. Verify both capabilities with the provider and the issue instructions.

Step-by-step: apply for an IPO through UPI

1. Read the issue instructions

  1. Open the IPO’s official offer information or the issue page supplied by your intermediary.
  2. Record the bid opening and closing dates, investor category, lot size, price band or fixed price, and the exact UPI mandate acceptance deadline.
  3. Check whether your intended application fits the retail category and any stated eligibility conditions.

There is no single universal cutoff time that applies to every IPO in SEBI’s general investor guidance. The issue’s own instructions control. Treat the mandate deadline as earlier than the final minute in practice, because bank, UPI or network delays can prevent a request from being authorized in time.

2. Open the IPO application in an eligible intermediary

  1. Sign in to your broker or other permitted intermediary.
  2. Open the public-issue or IPO section and select the correct issue.
  3. Choose the investor category available to you and enter the number of lots or shares allowed by the issue.
  4. Enter the bid price, or select the cut-off option when the issue and category permit it.
  5. Enter the UPI ID linked to the applicant’s own bank account. Check every character before submitting.

Save the application number or confirmation screen. It proves that the bid was sent to the intermediary; it does not prove that the UPI mandate has been accepted.

3. Submit the bid and wait for the mandate

After submission, the intermediary passes the bid and UPI details through the public-issue process. The sponsor or escrow bank then sends a request to the UPI app associated with that ID. Delivery may not be instantaneous. Keep the UPI app installed, notifications enabled and the linked bank account operational while the issue is open.

If your app supports a mandate or pending-collect section, look there as well as in ordinary payment notifications. Never approve a request solely because it mentions an IPO: compare the issue name, applicant, amount and originating handle with your submitted bid.

4. Inspect and authorize the mandate

  1. Open the supported UPI app and locate the public-issue request.
  2. Check the issue name, applicant details, amount to be blocked, validity or expiry information, and originating handle.
  3. Confirm that the bank account shown is the account you used for the application.
  4. Approve the request with your UPI PIN.

Entering a UPI PIN authorizes the bank to place the block; it is not a request to send the full amount to another person. Do not share the PIN with a broker representative, caller or anyone claiming to be able to complete the application for you.

5. Verify that the mandate was accepted

Return to the intermediary’s application status, if available, and check the mandate status in the UPI app or bank records. Look for an accepted, successful or equivalent status rather than merely a submitted bid. Confirm that the required amount is unavailable for ordinary spending because it is blocked. If the issue provides a registrar or exchange status facility, retain the application number for later checks.

If the request is still pending, do not repeatedly submit new bids without first understanding the issue’s rules. A duplicate application can create avoidable confusion. Check the deadline and contact the intermediary or bank promptly if the status does not change.

What happens to your money after applying?

The UPI route uses the ASBA principle: money remains in your bank account but is blocked so it cannot be used for other transactions. The amount is not normally transferred to the issuer when you submit the bid. SEBI’s ASBA explanation and the NSE ASBA procedure describe the allocation and release process.

  • If shares are allotted: the amount required for the allotted shares is debited from the blocked funds.
  • If fewer shares are allotted than requested: only the relevant allotment amount is debited and the balance is released.
  • If no shares are allotted: the blocked amount is released after the allocation process.

The precise release timing depends on the issue’s processing, registrar, exchange, bank and UPI systems. Keep the account funded and avoid treating a temporary block as money that can be spent again until your bank shows that it has been released.

UPI limits and category checks

SEBI’s investor guidance states a UPI IPO application limit of ₹5 lakh per transaction for retail individual investors. That is a procedural ceiling stated on the guidance page, not a guarantee that every issue permits an application of that size or that you qualify for the retail category. Check the current issue instructions, category definitions, lot limits and any applicable rules before placing a bid.

Do not infer eligibility from the amount alone. A bid can fail or be disregarded when the applicant details, bank account, UPI ID, category or issue-specific requirements do not match. The applicant’s name and account ownership should remain consistent throughout the form and mandate.

Deadlines: which one matters?

Several timestamps can appear during an application:

  • Bid closing time: the last time the intermediary can accept a bid under the issue terms.
  • Mandate acceptance deadline: the last time the UPI authorization must be approved. This may be distinct from the bid closing time.
  • Mandate expiry: the time after which an unapproved request can no longer be authorized.
  • Allocation and release dates: later processing milestones that determine when debits or unblocks appear.

Use the exact dates and times printed in the issue’s official information and the mandate screen. SEBI’s general page does not establish one cutoff for every IPO, so a deadline remembered from a previous issue is not reliable for a new one.

Troubleshooting common failures

The bid says submitted, but no mandate appears

  • Check that the UPI ID was typed correctly and is linked to the applicant’s own account.
  • Open the UPI app’s pending, mandate or collect-request area instead of relying only on push notifications.
  • Confirm that the app and handle appear on the current SEBI public-issue list.
  • Check the issue-specific deadline immediately and contact the intermediary or bank if the request remains absent.

General investor guidance does not establish one universal remedy for a missing request. Do not assume that a later request will automatically be generated or that the bid is complete without an accepted mandate.

The mandate is pending or rejected

Compare the applicant, account, amount and issue details with your bid. A lack of sufficient available balance, an inactive or incorrect UPI ID, a bank-side restriction, an expired request or a technical interruption can prevent authorization. Resolve the issue through the bank or intermediary while the stated deadline is still open; after expiry, the issue’s rules determine whether any action remains possible.

You used someone else’s UPI ID or bank account

SEBI’s guidance says third-party UPI IDs or bank accounts are not considered for allocation. Contact the intermediary as soon as possible for the permitted correction or cancellation procedure, but do not expect a later mandate approval to cure an ownership mismatch automatically.

The app or handle is not supported

Check the current SEBI public-issue list and your bank’s own IPO-mandate support information. A familiar UPI app used for ordinary person-to-person payments may not be enabled for public issues. Use only the supported route identified for the issue and intermediary.

The amount appears blocked after allocation

First check whether the registrar has completed allocation and whether the bank has received the release instruction. The allotted amount can be debited while excess funds remain blocked temporarily. Retain the application reference, mandate details and account statement; if the block does not clear after the issue’s stated processing period, raise the matter with the intermediary, bank and registrar using those records.

A practical pre-submission checklist

  • Issue dates, lot size, price band and category checked against official offer information.
  • Eligible intermediary confirmed for IPO applications.
  • Applicant’s own UPI ID entered and rechecked.
  • Linked bank account has enough available balance for the maximum block.
  • UPI app and public-issue handle verified against the current SEBI list.
  • Application reference saved after bid submission.
  • Mandate opened, details inspected and approved with the UPI PIN.
  • Mandate status verified before the issue-specific deadline.
  • Funds left untouched until allotment and release are reflected by the bank.

Security practices for UPI IPO applications

  • Enter the UPI ID only inside the official intermediary or bank application you opened yourself.
  • Never disclose your UPI PIN, one-time password or full banking credentials to a caller or chat contact.
  • Approve only a request whose issue, amount, applicant and originating handle match your application.
  • Do not install an unknown app or use a link sent through an unsolicited message to “unlock” an IPO mandate.
  • Save screenshots or reference numbers for the bid and accepted mandate, but remove sensitive account information before sharing a support ticket.

What to retain for allocation day

Keep the application number, bid quantity and price, UPI ID used, mandate reference, acceptance timestamp and bank account statement showing the block. These records let you distinguish three different outcomes: a bid that was never submitted, a bid submitted without an accepted mandate, and a valid application awaiting allocation. They also make a bank or intermediary escalation more precise if funds remain blocked or the status is unclear.

Key takeaways

Applying through UPI is not a single tap. Submit the IPO bid through an eligible intermediary, then authorize the separate mandate in a supported UPI app using the applicant’s own bank account. Verify acceptance before the issue-specific deadline. Under ASBA, the money stays in the account while blocked; only the amount for allotted shares is debited, and unused or unsuccessful application funds are released after processing. For current limits, eligible routes and supported handles, follow the issue’s offer information and the latest SEBI and exchange instructions.
