To apply for an Indian IPO through UPI, submit your bid through an eligible broker or other permitted intermediary, then approve the sponsor-bank mandate in your UPI app with your UPI PIN. The application amount is blocked in your own bank account rather than paid immediately. After allotment, the allotted amount is debited and any balance is released. You can also apply through bank ASBA, where an SCSB blocks the funds directly after accepting your application.
What you need before starting
An IPO application is valid only when the bid, investor details and payment authorization all meet the issue rules. Gather the following before you open your broker or bank application screen:
- A demat account in the applicant’s name for receiving allotted shares.
- A bank account belonging to the same applicant.
- Your own UPI ID linked to that bank account if you are using UPI.
- Access to the UPI app on the device where mandate requests appear.
- The live issue details: opening and closing dates, price or price band, lot size, permitted categories, and the mandate-confirmation cutoff.
Issue dates and cutoffs are not universal. The National Stock Exchange issue-information page displays a confirmation cutoff for the specific offering, and another IPO may use a different time. Read the current prospectus, exchange issue page and your intermediary’s instructions before entering a bid.
Check the bid terms
Confirm the minimum lot, the number of lots you want, the bid price or whether you are selecting the cut-off option, and the category under which you qualify. A wrong quantity, price or category can cause rejection or an unintended application. The official overview pages do not provide one universal correction rule for every category, so consult the issue prospectus and platform instructions before trying to amend a submitted bid.

Use an eligible channel
UPI IPO applications must be submitted through a permitted intermediary, such as an eligible syndicate member, registered stock broker, registrar and transfer agent, or depository participant. The UPI app, handle and bank must also be on the applicable current eligibility lists. Do not assume that every broker, app or UPI handle supports IPO applications merely because it supports ordinary UPI payments.
How to apply through a broker using UPI
The broker form is only the first part of a UPI ASBA application. The process is complete only after the sponsor-bank mandate is approved and the amount is successfully blocked.
- Open the live IPO application. In the broker’s IPO section, select the issue that is currently open. Read the displayed dates, category, lot size, price information and mandate deadline against the exchange and prospectus information.
- Select your investor category. Choose the category that accurately describes the applicant. The UPI limit and eligibility described by SEBI’s investor guidance apply to retail individual investors; other categories can have different rules and payment channels.
- Enter the applicant’s details. Provide the PAN, demat information, quantity and bid price requested by the intermediary. Review every character before submission.
- Enter the applicant’s own UPI ID. The UPI ID must be linked to a bank account owned by the applicant. A family member’s UPI ID or another person’s bank account is not a substitute.
- Submit the bid. The intermediary uploads the bid and UPI ID to the exchange bidding platform. The exchange passes those details to the issuer’s sponsor bank, which generates the mandate request.
- Open the UPI app and find the mandate. Look in the app’s mandates, pending requests or IPO section. Depending on the bank and app, the request may appear as a collect request or a named IPO mandate rather than as a normal person-to-person payment.
- Verify the request before authorizing it. Match the issue name, applicant, amount, bank account and expiry or deadline with your broker submission. Reject or report a request that shows a different issue, amount or applicant.
- Approve with the UPI PIN. Enter the UPI PIN only after checking the details. Approval authorizes the sponsor bank to block the application amount and, if shares are allotted, debit the amount due.
- Confirm that the funds are blocked. Check the bank account’s lien or blocked-funds display and the broker’s application-status page. A broker status of “submitted” without a successful mandate and block does not by itself complete the application.
- Keep the account funded until the outcome. Do not remove the required balance or close the linked account while the mandate is active. The bank needs the block to remain in place through allotment and settlement.
How the IPO UPI mandate works
The mandate is an authorization, not an immediate transfer to the issuer. Under the ASBA mechanism, the requested amount remains in your account but is unavailable for other transactions while the application is processed. SEBI describes the applied amount as blocked while remaining in the investor’s account until allotment.

Who sends the request
Your broker or other intermediary does not normally debit the money directly. It submits the bid and UPI ID to the exchange. The issuer’s sponsor bank then sends the authorization request through the UPI system. The request should identify the issue and amount you applied for.

What approval does
Approving with the UPI PIN permits the sponsor bank to place a block on the account and to debit the amount required for shares actually allotted. It is possible to submit a bid form without ever approving the mandate; that leaves the payment portion incomplete.
What happens after allotment
| Allotment result | Account treatment | What you should see |
|---|---|---|
| Full allotment | The amount for all allotted shares is debited from the blocked balance. | The corresponding shares are credited to the demat account after settlement. |
| Partial allotment | Only the amount due for the allotted shares is debited; the remainder is unblocked. | The released balance becomes available in the bank account. |
| No allotment | No IPO amount is debited; the block is released after the mandate ends or expires. | There is no separate refund payment to collect. |
Blocked funds continue to earn interest under the ASBA arrangement, according to SEBI’s investor guidance. Release timing can depend on the issue’s allotment and settlement process, so use the official issue timetable and your bank’s status rather than an assumed number of hours.
UPI eligibility, ownership and the ₹5 lakh limit
SEBI’s investor page states a limit of ₹5 lakh per transaction for UPI IPO applications by retail individual investors. The same guidance says third-party UPI IDs and third-party bank accounts are not considered for allocation. In practical terms, the PAN, demat account, bank account and UPI identity used for the bid should belong to the applicant.
That limit is not a blanket rule for every investor category or every future issue. Before applying, verify the current SEBI and exchange instructions, the category definitions in the prospectus, and the intermediary’s permitted payment method. If your application amount or category falls outside the ordinary retail case, bank ASBA or another specified route may be required.
How to apply through bank ASBA instead
ASBA means Application Supported by Blocked Amount. With bank ASBA, an SCSB (Self-Certified Syndicate Bank) accepts the application and blocks the funds in your bank account. You do not authorize a UPI collect request.
- Confirm that your bank is an SCSB for the issue. Use the current issue documentation or bank channel to verify eligibility before preparing the form.
- Obtain the ASBA application form or the bank’s online ASBA screen. Select the correct IPO and investor category.
- Enter PAN, demat, quantity, price and bank-account details. The account must belong to the applicant and contain enough available balance for the maximum application amount.
- Submit the application to the SCSB. The bank validates the form and places a block rather than transferring the money to the issuer immediately.
- Retain the acknowledgement or application number. Use it to track the bid and investigate a discrepancy before the issue closes.
- Wait for allotment. The bank transfers only the amount due for allotted shares to the issuer and releases the unused balance. If there is no allotment, the blocked amount is released without a refund transaction.
Broker/UPI versus bank ASBA
| Decision point | UPI ASBA through an intermediary | Bank ASBA |
|---|---|---|
| Where you submit | Eligible broker, syndicate member, registrar/transfer agent or depository participant. | An SCSB bank channel, online or through the bank’s accepted application process. |
| How authorization is completed | Approve the sponsor-bank UPI mandate with the UPI PIN and confirm the block. | The SCSB validates the application and places the account block. |
| Payment handling | Funds stay in the account under a UPI mandate until allotment. | Funds stay in the account under the bank’s ASBA block until allotment. |
| Retail UPI threshold | SEBI’s investor guidance states ₹5 lakh per transaction for retail individual investors; verify current category rules. | Apply the amount and category limits stated in the issue documents and bank instructions. |
| Third-party details | Third-party UPI IDs or bank accounts are not considered for allocation under SEBI guidance. | The applicant and bank-account ownership requirements in the ASBA rules still apply. |
| Critical deadline | The issue-specific UPI mandate-confirmation cutoff, not merely the bid-submission time. | The issue’s ASBA submission deadline and the bank’s own acceptance cutoff. |
| Allotment outcome | Allotted amount is debited; excess is unblocked. | The SCSB transfers the allotted amount; excess is unblocked. |
Neither route guarantees an allotment, and the official procedures do not establish that one route is universally faster or easier. Choose the route that you can complete correctly before its cutoff and that is available for your investor category.
Common UPI errors and how to troubleshoot them
The mandate never arrives
- Check that the UPI ID was typed exactly and belongs to the bank account used for the application.
- Open the UPI app’s mandates, pending-request or IPO area instead of relying only on a notification.
- Confirm that the broker shows the bid as submitted and that the issue is still open.
- Check whether the bank account has restrictions that prevent collect requests or IPO mandates.
- Contact the broker and bank promptly while the issue remains open; do not wait until after the mandate-confirmation cutoff.
There is no single universal fix or complete official error-code directory for every bank and app. Treat the checks above as practical diagnostics, then follow the current instructions from the intermediary and bank.

Do not approve it. Compare the request with the submitted bid, then ask the broker or bank to investigate. Authorizing a mismatched request can create a block that does not correspond to the intended application.
The broker says “submitted,” but no funds are blocked
A submitted bid is not the same as a completed UPI application. Check the UPI mandate status and the bank account’s blocked or lien amount. If the block is absent, contact the broker and bank before the live cutoff; a later authorization may not be accepted once the issue closes.
The mandate is pending or approval fails
Verify that the account has enough available balance, the UPI app is connected to the correct bank account, and the UPI PIN works. Avoid repeated attempts with an incorrect PIN, and use the app’s current pending-request screen. If the request remains unresolved, escalate with the broker and bank while the issue is open.
A third-party UPI ID or account was used
SEBI guidance excludes third-party UPI IDs and bank accounts from allocation. Do not rely on another person’s account to complete the application. Ask the intermediary whether cancellation and a fresh application are allowed under the issue’s current rules; correction and reapplication conditions vary by offering.
The amount is still blocked after allotment
First check the published allotment and release schedule, then review the mandate status and bank statement. A partial allotment should release the unused portion, while no allotment should release the full block after the mandate ends or expires. If the expected release has passed, provide the application number and mandate reference to the bank and intermediary.

Work backward from the issue-specific mandate cutoff rather than from the final bid-submission date. Submit early enough to allow for a delayed notification, a bank outage or a rejected UPI request. Keep the following records:
- IPO application number and bid confirmation.
- UPI ID used and mandate reference.
- Screenshot or statement showing the blocked amount.
- Issue closing time and mandate-confirmation cutoff.
- Allotment result and the bank’s debit or unblock entry.
Check status in both places: the intermediary’s IPO application page for bid acceptance, and the bank or UPI app for the mandate and block. A discrepancy between those records is a reason to contact support immediately.
A practical pre-submission checklist
- The issue is open, and you have read its current price, lot, category and cutoff information.
- Your broker, bank, UPI app and handle are eligible for this IPO route.
- The PAN, demat account, bank account and UPI ID belong to the same applicant.
- The quantity and price match your intended bid.
- The account has enough available balance for the maximum amount that may be blocked.
- You know where the UPI app displays pending mandates.
- You will approve only a mandate whose issue, applicant and amount match your bid.
- You have saved the application and mandate references.
What to remember about IPO applications
An IPO application through UPI has two inseparable actions: submit the bid through an eligible intermediary and authorize the sponsor-bank mandate. The money is blocked, not sent upfront; only the amount due for allotted shares is debited, and the rest is released. Bank ASBA follows the same blocked-funds principle through an SCSB rather than a UPI mandate. Using the applicant’s own details, checking the live issue cutoff and verifying the actual block are the strongest safeguards against an incomplete application.
