To apply for a J-1 visa, first be accepted into a qualifying exchange visitor program and receive Form DS-2019 from its sponsor. Then check whether you owe the SEVIS I-901 fee, complete Form DS-160, follow the U.S. embassy or consulate’s appointment and payment instructions, and bring the required documents to your interview. The order of appointments, local payment rules, and any extra requirements vary by post, so use the instructions for the place where you will apply.

Before you start: a J-1 visa requires an exchange program

A J-1 visa is for a person participating in an eligible U.S. exchange visitor program. It is not a visa you apply for first and then use to find a program. Begin by applying to a program run by an organization approved to sponsor exchange visitors. The sponsor determines whether you have been accepted into its program and handles the program registration and required sponsorship paperwork.

After acceptance, the sponsor registers you in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). It then provides Form DS-2019, the Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status. The form contains information you need for the visa application, including your SEVIS identification number and program details. You must have a DS-2019 to apply for a J-1 visa. If you are applying in the Intern or Trainee category, you also need Form DS-7002, the training or internship placement plan.

Check the DS-2019 as soon as you receive it. Confirm that your name and program information match your passport and your understanding of the program. If a detail appears wrong or your program dates or information change, contact the sponsor rather than trying to alter the sponsor-issued form yourself. The sponsor is the source for questions about your program record and whether a correction or replacement form is needed.

Receiving the DS-2019 does not mean a visa has been issued. It establishes your program eligibility documentation; the consular officer separately decides whether you qualify for the visa. Likewise, a visa is a travel document, not a guarantee of admission to the United States or a substitute for complying with the conditions of your exchange program.

J-1 application steps in order

1. Confirm your program category and sponsor paperwork

Make sure you know your J-1 category and have the correct forms from the sponsor. All J-1 applicants need Form DS-2019. Intern and Trainee applicants also need Form DS-7002. Other categories should not assume that DS-7002 applies to them. If a spouse or child may accompany you, ask the sponsor whether that family member is eligible for J-2 status and request a separate DS-2019 for each eligible dependent.

2. Check whether the SEVIS I-901 fee applies to you

Once your sponsor tells you that your SEVIS registration is active, check whether you must pay the I-901 SEVIS fee. Some applicants are exempt. Ask your sponsor about your circumstances and verify the current fee and payment process through the official SEVIS fee service before paying. The amount is not stated here because it should be checked against the current official information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse the I-901 SEVIS fee with the visa application processing fee. They are separate charges with different rules. Eligible J-2 dependents do not pay an additional SEVIS fee, but each dependent still needs the required application and sponsor documentation.

3. Complete Form DS-160 online

Every visa applicant must submit Form DS-160, the Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application. Have your passport, travel history, education and work information, and DS-2019 available while completing it. J applicants need the SEVIS ID and program address shown on the DS-2019, so use the sponsor’s form rather than relying on memory or an old document.

Answer in English using English characters, except where the form asks for your full name in your native alphabet. Enter information accurately and completely. The U.S. Department of State warns that an incomplete or incorrect DS-160 may need to be corrected and could require rescheduling the interview. If you notice a mistake after submission, follow the instructions of the embassy or consulate where you will apply; do not assume that you can simply edit a submitted form or that every post handles corrections the same way.

After submitting, save or print the DS-160 confirmation page containing the barcode. That confirmation page is required for the visa process. You generally do not need to print the entire DS-160 application, but keep your own notes or a copy of your answers so you can review them before the interview.

4. Check the instructions for your embassy or consulate

Use the website of the U.S. embassy or consulate where you intend to apply to determine how to schedule the interview, pay the application fee, and provide any locally required information. These procedures are not uniform worldwide. In particular, verify the sequence: a post may direct applicants to pay before scheduling, after scheduling, or through a designated process. Do not rely on a friend’s instructions from another country or an old account of the process.

The State Department generally recommends applying in the country where you live. Appointment availability depends on the location, season, and visa category, so start early enough to allow time for scheduling and processing. Check the post’s current information for interview requirements, any possible interview-waiver process, photo specifications, payment methods, and supplemental documents. Most applicants generally need an interview, and a consular officer can require one even if an exception might otherwise be available.

5. Pay the applicable fees and keep proof

The State Department’s 2026 fee schedule lists a $185 non-petition-based nonimmigrant visa application processing fee, which generally includes J visas. This is not universal: applicants participating in qualifying official U.S. government-sponsored educational and cultural exchange programs are exempt from the application fee. The State Department identifies qualifying program serial numbers beginning G-1, G-2, G-3, or G-7 for this exemption. Those qualifying applicants and their dependents are also exempt from applicable visa issuance fees.

For other applicants, an issuance fee may depend on nationality and the applicable reciprocity schedule. Check the current State Department fee information and the applying post’s payment instructions before paying. If the post requires payment before the interview, bring the receipt or other proof it specifies. Do not assume that a fee paid for one application can be reused for another or that the same payment method is accepted at every post.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Assemble documents and attend the interview

Prepare the required documents in the form and order requested by the post. Keep original sponsor-issued paperwork safe, and bring supporting material that relates to your program, finances, and plans after the exchange if it is relevant to your circumstances. At the interview, answer the officer’s questions truthfully and directly. The officer—not the sponsor or an individual document—determines whether you qualify.

Required J-1 visa documents

The State Department’s general checklist includes the following. The applying post may specify how to present them or ask for additional documents.

  • Passport: A passport valid for travel to the United States, generally valid for at least six months beyond your intended period of stay. A country-specific agreement may provide an exception, so check the rule that applies to your passport.
  • DS-160 confirmation page: Bring the page with the barcode after you have submitted the online application.
  • Visa application fee receipt: Bring proof of payment if the fee applies and the post requires payment before the interview. If you believe you qualify for an exemption, verify the requirements rather than paying or assuming it applies.
  • Photograph: Follow the photo format and submission instructions of the embassy or consulate where you apply. Do not assume that photo rules or whether a separate printed photograph is needed are identical at every post.
  • Form DS-2019: Bring the sponsor-issued certificate for your exchange visitor program.
  • Form DS-7002: Bring this form if you are applying in the J-1 Intern or Trainee category.

Read the Legal Rights and Protections pamphlet before applying. Treat the local post’s checklist as essential: a general list does not override a post’s current instructions or cover every document it may request in your case.

If a spouse or child will apply as a J-2 dependent

J-2 eligibility depends on the principal applicant’s program category. An eligible spouse and unmarried children under 21 need their own visa applications and separate DS-2019 forms from the sponsor. Ask the sponsor whether each family member qualifies before beginning their applications. Eligible dependents do not pay an additional SEVIS fee, but they still need to follow the applying post’s application, interview, and document instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Supporting evidence: what may help explain your case

The core documents establish the application and program record, but an officer may ask for more information. The State Department identifies evidence relating to the purpose of travel, intent to depart after the exchange, ability to pay travel costs, and other relevant matters. The precise request depends on the case and the post; there is no universal supplemental-document package that guarantees approval.

Choose evidence that is relevant, accurate, and consistent with your DS-160 and DS-2019. For example, if employment or family ties help explain your plans after the program, documents about those ties may provide context. If another person or organization will pay expenses, be ready to explain who is providing support and bring evidence of that arrangement if appropriate. The goal is to substantiate your actual circumstances, not to assemble the largest possible stack of papers.

How to prepare for the J-1 visa interview

Review the application and sponsor records together

Before the appointment, review your DS-160 and DS-2019 side by side. Make sure key information—such as your program, sponsor, dates, and personal details—is consistent. If you find a discrepancy, contact the sponsor or follow the post’s procedure for correcting an application before the interview. Do not invent an explanation or alter an official form to make two records appear to match.

Be ready to explain the exchange in your own words

Understand the purpose of your program, what you will do, and how it fits your exchange plans. Intern and Trainee applicants should be familiar with the training or internship plan described in DS-7002. You do not need to memorize a script. A concise, truthful explanation grounded in the program documents is more useful than a rehearsed answer that does not reflect your actual plans.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Know who is paying and what happens after the program

Be prepared to explain how you will cover relevant costs, including who will provide financial support if it is not entirely your own. Also be prepared to describe your plans after the exchange and why you intend to leave the United States when the program ends. These are areas an officer may consider; they are not a fixed list of questions that every applicant will receive.

Answer honestly and do not treat any document as a guarantee

Respond to the question asked, accurately and without embellishment. If you do not understand a question, ask for clarification. Do not guess at facts or give an answer simply because you think it is expected. The State Department states: “There is no guarantee that you will be issued a visa.” The consular officer determines eligibility under U.S. law, and having a sponsor, DS-2019, funding evidence, or other supporting records does not predetermine the decision.

Fees, timing, and travel planning

There are several separate timing and cost considerations: the SEVIS I-901 fee, the visa application processing fee, and, for some applicants, a visa issuance fee based on nationality and reciprocity. The $185 application fee is the State Department’s 2026 general amount for non-petition-based nonimmigrant visa processing, not a universal J-1 charge. Confirm whether an exemption applies and verify current payment instructions with the post before paying. Check the official SEVIS fee service and your sponsor for the current I-901 fee and any exception.

Interview wait times vary by post, season, and visa category, and the available information does not support a universal processing-time promise. Apply as early as your program paperwork allows, and consult the post’s current appointment information rather than planning around another applicant’s timeline. Do not buy tickets or make final travel plans until the visa has been issued. A scheduled interview or approved exchange program is not the same as having a visa in hand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Starting with the visa form instead of program acceptance: The sponsor’s acceptance and DS-2019 come first; the DS-160 requires program information from that form.
  • Using the wrong or outdated program information: Check the DS-2019 and consult the sponsor if information is incorrect or changes.
  • Submitting an inaccurate DS-160: Review all answers before submission. Errors may require correction and rescheduling, depending on the post’s process.
  • Following appointment advice from the wrong location: Use the instructions of the specific embassy or consulate where you apply for sequencing, payment, photo, interview, and document rules.
  • Assuming every applicant pays the same fees: Application and issuance fee exemptions or reciprocity requirements can change what applies. Verify before payment.
  • Relying on one document to guarantee approval: The officer evaluates eligibility; no supporting document or prepared answer promises a visa.
  • Committing to travel before issuance: Wait for the visa before finalizing plans.
