Yes—DAAD lists a monthly stipend of €992 for EPOS scholarship recipients at graduate level. The rate is different for doctoral candidates: €1,300 per month, increasing to €1,400 from February 2026. EPOS funds only eligible development-related postgraduate courses listed by DAAD, and applicants must meet the selected course’s requirements and deadline.

What the DAAD EPOS scholarship covers

EPOS provides individual scholarships for postgraduate courses in Germany that appear on DAAD’s course list. Depending on the programme, funding lasts 12 to 42 months. The €992 monthly rate is for graduates; doctoral candidates have a separate rate. DAAD also lists payments toward health, accident and personal-liability insurance, plus a travel allowance unless another source covers travel. Rent and accompanying-family allowances may be available in certain circumstances. These benefits do not establish that the stipend will cover every student’s living costs. DAAD scholarship database

Who is eligible to apply?

EPOS is intended for graduates from eligible countries who have relevant professional experience and want to pursue development-related postgraduate study. DAAD describes the typical applicant as someone working in a public authority or a state or private company in a developing country. Meeting the profile does not guarantee a scholarship; selection also considers academic suitability, language ability, work experience and the applicant’s development-related motivation. DAAD scholarship database

  • A related bachelor’s degree, with academic results in the upper third of the cohort.
  • At least two years of relevant professional experience after the first degree.
  • A degree normally no more than six years old.
  • Applicants must not have been resident in Germany for more than 15 months by the application deadline.

DAAD expects scholarship recipients to take social responsibility and support change in their professional or personal environment after their training. That development connection matters alongside academic qualifications.

How to choose an eligible course

First confirm that the postgraduate course appears in DAAD’s EPOS list. EPOS is not a general scholarship for any degree in Germany. Compare listed courses by subject and development relevance, degree level, duration, language of instruction, accepted language evidence, deadline and any additional course conditions. The funding period is set by the programme and may range from 12 to 42 months. DAAD scholarship database

DAAD’s database links the 2027/2028 course list, but each course sets its own application deadline. Do not assume one EPOS-wide date applies to every programme.

How to apply

Send the application directly to the selected postgraduate course, following its procedure and deadline. DAAD’s official application guidance states: “Applications have only to be sent to the respective course directly!” Applications sent to DAAD will not be forwarded to the university or course. You may apply to up to three courses; list them in priority order and keep that order consistent. DAAD application guidance

  1. Select and check the course. Confirm it is on the EPOS list, then note its deadline, language rules and extra requirements.
  2. Prepare the application documents. DAAD’s listed materials include a signed checklist and EPOS application form; a reverse-chronological CV without unexplained gaps; a motivation letter; a current employer recommendation on official letterhead with signature and stamp; employment certificates proving the required post-degree experience; recent language proof; degree certificates; and full transcripts. Translations may be required, and some courses ask for additional documents.
  3. Submit to the course. Complete applications must be in English or German. Applicants from the People’s Republic of China are asked for an APS certificate.
  4. Wait for the course’s selection process. The course selection committee suggests candidates for a DAAD scholarship. Suggested candidates are then contacted to upload a full application to the DAAD portal, after which DAAD finalises selection.

Use the current DAAD EPOS application instructions and the selected course’s own application page to confirm required forms, document format and submission method.

What language proof do you need?

For German-taught courses

The scholarship includes a six-month preparatory German course. Applicants must nevertheless have at least B1 German when applying and pass DSH 2 or TestDaF 4 before the degree begins. DAAD programme information

For English-taught courses

The selected course sets its own language requirements and accepted evidence. DAAD’s checklist names IELTS and TOEFL as examples of recent English-language proof, but neither test is a universal EPOS requirement. Check the chosen programme’s rules before arranging a test.
