The most reliable way to analyze a wire or cable stock is to separate metal-price effects from the company’s underlying economics. Normalize copper, aluminum and lead prices; test whether selling prices actually pass those costs through; split growth into volume, mix and price; inspect backlog for timing and cancellation risk; then measure free-cash-flow conversion, leverage and debt maturities. A high reported margin or a large order book is not enough on its own.
The framework below uses disclosed figures from Nexans, Prysmian Group and Encore Wire to show how to make those adjustments and how to compare companies without treating different accounting conventions as equivalent.
Why wire-and-cable stocks need a different analysis
Cable manufacturers often quote products with copper or aluminum embedded in the selling price. When the metal price moves, reported revenue can change even if the company ships the same physical volume. Inventory held between purchase and sale can also create gains or losses, and hedging can shift the timing of the effect. A sales increase caused by copper inflation is therefore not the same as organic growth.

Building wire may be exposed to construction cycles and daily competitive pricing, while high-voltage transmission, subsea and grid projects can have multiyear contracts, milestone billing and large working-capital requirements. Data-center, industrial and utility demand can produce a different margin and order pattern from residential construction.

Your analysis should answer four separate questions:
- How much of the reported result is simply the metal-price convention?
- Are margins protected by contract clauses, hedges and product mix, or can a short copper rally compress them?
- Is the backlog funded, scheduled and cancellable, and when does it turn into cash?
- Can the balance sheet fund plants, acquisitions and working capital through a downturn?
Only after answering those questions should you compare valuation or choose a preferred stock.
1. Normalize metal prices before comparing companies
Start with each issuer’s definition of “standard” or “constant” metal prices. Nexans reported 2025 sales of €7,810 million at current metal prices and €6,098 million at standard metal prices, using a standard copper assumption of €5,000 per tonne. Prysmian’s fiscal-year 2025 methodology used €5,500 per tonne for copper, €1,500 per tonne for aluminum and €2,000 per tonne for lead. Because the reference prices differ, a Nexans standard-metal margin cannot be compared directly with a Prysmian standard-metal margin without a reconciliation.

| Issuer and period | Metal-price basis disclosed | What it is useful for | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nexans, 2025 | €5,000/t standard copper; €7,810m sales at current metal prices versus €6,098m at standard prices | Separating reported revenue from a constant-metal presentation | That the company would earn the same margin at any future copper price |
| Prysmian, FY25 methodology | €5,500/t copper, €1,500/t aluminum and €2,000/t lead | Holding metal prices constant across periods in Prysmian’s own comparison | Direct comparability with Nexans’ constants |
For each company, collect current-metal sales, standard-metal sales, standard-metal EBITDA and the bridge between them. Then ask whether inventory revaluation, hedging, contractual pass-through and the company’s reported “core exposure” are included or excluded. If the definitions differ, show the difference instead of forcing a single ranking.
Build a simple metal-price bridge
A practical bridge starts with reported revenue and removes the change attributable solely to metal prices. In spreadsheet terms, calculate:
metal-neutral sales change = reported sales change − metal-price effect − foreign-exchange effect − consolidation effect
Then calculate the same bridge for EBITDA. The residual should be investigated as physical volume, mix, manufacturing productivity, pricing, hedging timing and one-off items—not automatically labeled “organic growth.”

Nexans reported a €24 million 2025 core-exposure effect related to copper variation, down from €41 million in 2024. That figure is a reminder that a company can disclose a favorable or unfavorable copper effect separately from operating performance. It should be kept beside, not mixed into, the recurring margin analysis.
Do not use a single copper quote for every business
Copper, aluminum and sometimes lead matter in different proportions by product. A low-voltage aluminum cable maker has a different exposure from a copper-intensive subsea manufacturer. Use the issuer’s stated basket and product mix. If a company does not disclose a metal assumption or bridge, mark the item “not stated” and reduce confidence in cross-company comparisons.
2. Test whether copper costs pass through to selling prices
Metal pass-through is a commercial mechanism, not a law of nature. Contracts may reset monthly, quarterly or at shipment; spot quotations may be repriced daily; and competitive pressure can prevent a full or immediate pass-through.
Encore Wire’s annual-report risk disclosure is explicit: “This competitive pricing market for wire does not always mirror changes in copper prices, making margins highly volatile.” That warning means a copper rally can raise input costs before quoted wire prices catch up. The reverse can also happen: falling copper can leave inventory purchased at a higher cost, creating a temporary margin drag even when customer prices are falling more slowly.

- Is the contract indexed to a published copper or aluminum reference, and which date is used?
- Is the adjustment automatic, or must the company renegotiate with the customer?
- How long is the lag between purchasing metal, booking the order and shipping the cable?
- Are hedges designated against inventory, firm orders or forecast demand?
- Does management report a “core exposure” or similar residual after pass-through?
- How much of the business is daily or weekly spot pricing versus multiyear project work?
Compare the change in the relevant metal price with the change in quoted cable prices over the same period. A margin that rises while copper is stable is more informative than one that rises only because a favorable inventory or hedge timing effect was released. Conversely, a margin decline during a copper spike may be temporary if contract resets occur with a documented lag; without that evidence, treat it as a real risk.
Separate margin level from margin quality
Margin quality depends on repeatability. Look for a consistent contribution from mix, utilization, productivity and contract economics. Discount the apparent durability of a margin that relies on a one-time inventory benefit, an unusual hedge result, a large project milestone or an acquisition-period accounting effect.
Nexans generated €728 million of adjusted EBITDA in 2025 and an 11.9% adjusted EBITDA margin on standard-metal sales, with €344 million of free cash flow. Those are useful reference points, but the margin should be tested against the company’s standard-metal definition, segment mix and the €24 million copper-related core-exposure effect before being extrapolated.

3. Separate volume, mix, price and utilization
After normalizing metal, decompose growth into four operating drivers:
- Physical volume: tonnes, kilometers, conductor capacity or other shipment measures.
- Price: changes in the cable conversion price after metal pass-through.
- Mix: the share of higher-value transmission, subsea, industrial, data-center or specialty products.
- Utilization and productivity: fixed-cost absorption, scrap, labor efficiency and plant output.
Nexans reported 2025 organic growth of 8.3%, or 11.6% excluding Other activities. Its PWR-Transmission business grew 40.0% year over year in the fourth quarter. A quarter with a large transmission project can therefore look very different from recurring low-voltage or building-wire demand. Do not annualize a project-heavy quarter without checking shipment phasing and the order schedule.
Use segment mix as a risk map
Map revenue and EBITDA by end market: grid and transmission, subsea, construction, industrial, data centers and other activities. A company with a high transmission mix may have stronger visibility but also larger project concentration, milestone and customer-funding risk. A construction-heavy company may have shorter order cycles and more immediate exposure to building activity. The “best” mix depends on the investor’s tolerance for execution and cyclicality.
Track plant additions and utilization alongside volume. New capacity can support growth but depress near-term margins if demand arrives later than planned. Conversely, a mature plant running near capacity can produce strong incremental margins but may require substantial capital expenditure to sustain growth.
4. Read backlog as a cash-flow schedule, not a headline number
Backlog is valuable only when you know what is contracted, when it ships, how it escalates and how much cash it consumes. For every disclosed backlog figure, record the customer, geography, project type, expected delivery years, escalation clauses, advance payments, cancellation or rescheduling rights and working-capital profile.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Nexans disclosed €7.9 billion of PWR-Transmission backlog in the first quarter of 2026 and said it provided visibility toward 2028. However, €1.2 billion was tied to the Great Sea Interconnector, which was under rescheduling and excluded from 2026 guidance. The headline backlog therefore cannot be treated as €7.9 billion of near-term, fully executable revenue.
| Backlog check | Evidence to seek | Why it changes the investment case |
|---|---|---|
| Contract status | Signed purchase order, framework agreement, letter of intent or conditional award | Conditional awards can disappear without producing revenue |
| Timing | Scheduled production and delivery years; milestone dates | Backlog does not equal current-year sales |
| Customer funding | Utility, government or consortium financing and approvals | Unfunded projects can be delayed or rescheduled |
| Price escalation | Metal-index clauses, inflation adjustments and change-order terms | Protects nominal value but may increase working capital |
| Cancellation terms | Termination fees, replacement rights and customer options | Determines how much backlog is economically firm |
| Cash conversion | Deposits, milestone billing, retention and inventory requirements | A profitable order can consume cash before final payment |
Convert backlog into a delivery curve
Build a year-by-year schedule rather than dividing backlog by total revenue. Apply an execution probability to projects with rescheduling, permitting or financing risk, and keep high-risk items visible rather than silently removing them. Compare the resulting delivery curve with plant capacity, announced capex and working-capital resources.

Backlog quality also has a concentration dimension. One customer or interconnector can dominate the number. A diversified backlog across utilities and geographies may be less vulnerable to one cancellation, while a concentrated backlog can still be attractive if the contracts are funded, indexed and protected by termination payments. The filing must establish which case applies.
5. Analyze debt, acquisitions and funding capacity
Read leverage with the cash-flow statement and the maturity ladder. Calculate net debt divided by EBITDA using the same EBITDA definition across companies, and separately track lease liabilities, pension obligations, acquisition financing, revolver availability, covenant headroom and committed capital expenditure.
Recommended Free Tools
| Disclosed item | Period and amount | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Nexans net debt | €266 million at 31 December 2025 | Year-end snapshot; compare with free cash flow and subsequent acquisitions |
| Nexans leverage | 0.36× at year-end 2025 | Low reported leverage at that date, subject to definition and later transactions |
| Nexans H1 2026 leverage | 1.4× financial leverage ratio | Material increase after the Republic Wire transaction; not comparable with the prior year-end snapshot without adjusting for the acquisition |
| Prysmian Encore Wire term loan | €910 million due in 2029 | A specific refinancing or repayment date to include in the maturity ladder |
| Prysmian revolving facilities | Facilities due in 2030 | Liquidity runway depends on undrawn capacity, covenants and renewal terms |
Nexans also generated €344 million of free cash flow in 2025. Compare that cash flow with dividends, share repurchases, acquisitions and capex rather than using it only as a profitability statistic. A company can report low net debt at year-end after receiving customer deposits, selling working capital or timing payments; the full-year cash-flow bridge reveals whether the position is repeatable.
Build a maturity and stress schedule
- List every bond, term loan, acquisition facility and material lease by maturity date, currency and interest basis.
- Record fixed versus floating rates and the company’s disclosed hedges.
- Subtract cash and available committed facilities, but do not count undrawn lines as cash.
- Model a downside case with lower volumes, a copper move that is not immediately passed through, higher inventory and delayed backlog milestones.
- Check whether the company can meet maturities from operating cash flow without selling assets or issuing equity.
Acquisitions deserve their own line. A transaction can lift EBITDA while increasing debt, integration costs and working capital. Compare pro forma leverage immediately after closing with the company’s stated target, then revisit the ratio when synergies are not yet realized. Nexans’ move from 0.36× at the end of 2025 to 1.4× in the first half of 2026 illustrates why a year-end ratio can become stale after a major deal.
6. Compare cable stocks on explicit, like-for-like axes
Use a scorecard with separate operating and financial columns. Do not award a company a higher score merely because it reports a larger number under a different metal-price convention.
| Axis | What to calculate | Evidence from the disclosed examples |
|---|---|---|
| Standard-metal profitability | Adjusted EBITDA divided by standard-metal sales, with the reference prices shown | Nexans: 11.9% in 2025; Prysmian’s comparable margin is not stated here, and its metal constants differ |
| Underlying growth | Organic growth excluding metal, foreign exchange and consolidation | Nexans: 8.3% in 2025, 11.6% excluding Other activities |
| Project momentum | Quarterly growth adjusted for shipment phasing and project concentration | Nexans PWR-Transmission: 40.0% in Q4 2025 |
| Backlog quality | Firm contracts, funded milestones, delivery years and cancellation exposure | Nexans: €7.9bn PWR-Transmission backlog in Q1 2026; €1.2bn under rescheduling |
| Cash conversion | Free cash flow divided by adjusted EBITDA over a full cycle | Nexans: €344m free cash flow against €728m adjusted EBITDA in 2025; investigate working-capital timing |
| Balance-sheet safety | Net leverage, liquidity and maturity concentration | Nexans: 0.36× at 2025 year-end and 1.4× in H1 2026; Prysmian: €910m Encore Wire term loan due 2029 and revolvers due 2030 |
| Metal-risk management | Pass-through clauses, hedge coverage, lag and residual exposure | Encore Wire warns that competitive wire prices do not always mirror copper prices |
The company with the “best mix” is the one that scores well on the dimensions matching your objective. A high-margin transmission specialist may be preferable for visibility, while a lower-leverage, shorter-cycle producer may be preferable when project execution or refinancing risk is the main concern. The available disclosures do not establish a universal winner.
7. A worked reading of the disclosed Nexans figures
Begin with the 2025 sales bridge: €7,810 million at current metal prices versus €6,098 million at standard prices. Use the standard-metal figure when comparing operating margins, and retain the current-metal figure for the cash amount that actually moved through the income statement. Then place the €728 million adjusted EBITDA and 11.9% standard-sales margin beside the €24 million copper-related core-exposure effect.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Next, test whether the €344 million free-cash-flow result supports the EBITDA quality. Review inventory, receivables, customer advances and capital expenditure to see whether cash conversion reflects normal operations or a favorable timing effect. Finally, update the balance-sheet view for the 1.4× H1 2026 leverage ratio and the Republic Wire transaction instead of relying on the 0.36× ratio reported at 31 December 2025.
For the order book, start with €7.9 billion of PWR-Transmission backlog and split out the €1.2 billion Great Sea Interconnector amount under rescheduling. Because that project was excluded from 2026 guidance, it should not be counted as a firm near-term sales bridge. The remaining backlog still requires a delivery schedule, customer-funding check and working-capital estimate.
8. Use Encore Wire’s copper disclosure as a volatility test
Encore Wire reported an average COMEX copper price of $3.86 per pound in the first quarter of 2024 versus $4.08 per pound in the first quarter of 2023. The year-over-year decline alone does not tell you whether margins improved: the company’s warning about competitive pricing means wire prices may move differently from copper.
Use this type of disclosure to design a sensitivity table. Model a copper increase and decrease, then apply three pass-through cases: immediate, lagged and incomplete. Add an inventory-timing line and a hedge-timing line. The result shows whether earnings are resilient because contracts protect the conversion margin or merely because the chosen quarter happened to align purchase and selling prices.
9. Common analytical mistakes and how to avoid them
- Comparing reported revenue without normalizing metal: current-price sales can rise while physical volume is flat. Use standard-metal sales and disclose the reference prices.
- Ranking companies by one quarter’s EBITDA margin: project milestones, inventory and hedges can dominate a quarter. Use several periods and investigate one-offs.
- Treating all backlog as contracted: distinguish firm orders from frameworks, conditional awards and projects under rescheduling.
- Ignoring delivery timing: a multiyear order book does not fund this year’s interest or payroll. Build a delivery and cash schedule.
- Using year-end leverage after an acquisition: update net debt and EBITDA for the transaction and integration costs.
- Counting revolver capacity as cash: availability can be restricted by covenants, currency, borrowing-base rules or lender commitments.
- Assuming a copper hedge removes all risk: hedges may cover only forecast demand, a specific order or a limited period; basis and timing differences remain.
- Mixing segment economics: transmission, subsea, construction and industrial cable have different contract terms, utilization and capital needs.
10. A repeatable quarterly workflow
- Collect the filing: record current-metal sales, standard-metal sales, metal assumptions, EBITDA, free cash flow and net debt.
- Reconcile the bridge: identify metal, foreign-exchange, consolidation, hedging, inventory and core-exposure effects.
- Measure operations: calculate organic growth, shipment volume, mix, utilization and segment margins.
- Audit backlog: update project value, customer, geography, delivery year, escalation, funding and cancellation status.
- Refresh financing: update maturities, interest expense, revolver headroom, capex commitments and acquisition debt.
- Run sensitivities: test copper and aluminum shocks, pass-through lags, lower volume, delayed projects and higher working capital.
- Re-score the companies: compare standardized margins, growth quality, backlog conversion, cash conversion and leverage using identical definitions.
Refresh the work after every quarterly or annual filing, a major acquisition, a project-rescheduling notice or a material copper-price move. Metal assumptions, guidance, backlog and leverage can change faster than an annual valuation model.
What a defensible investment conclusion looks like
A defensible conclusion states the metal-price basis, the normalized margin, the portion of backlog that is firm and near term, the expected cash conversion and the debt maturities that could constrain investment. It also identifies the condition that would invalidate the thesis—for example, a prolonged pass-through lag, a major project rescheduling, weaker customer funding or leverage that remains elevated after an acquisition.
Do not call a cable stock “best” because it has the largest backlog, the highest reported margin or the lowest single-day leverage ratio. Choose the company whose earnings remain understandable after metal prices are normalized, whose orders convert on a visible schedule and whose balance sheet can absorb the working-capital and capital-expenditure demands of growth.
