Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
To make a VPS answer an external ping, allow ICMP (or ICMPv6) in two separate places: the VPS provider’s network firewall or security group, and the firewall inside the guest operating system. Both gates must permit the request. A public address does not bypass either gate, and ping does not use a TCP or UDP port.
Use the smallest source IP range that needs to monitor the server, test from a genuinely external network, and inspect counters or logs at each layer when a request still times out. The procedure below covers IPv4, IPv6, common cloud controls, nftables, persistence, and a fault-isolation decision tree.

Why SSH can work while ping times out
SSH and ping are different protocols. An SSH connection normally uses TCP (usually port 22), while ping sends an ICMP Echo Request for IPv4 or an ICMPv6 Echo Request for IPv6. A provider can allow TCP 22 while denying all ICMP, so successful SSH proves only that the SSH path is open. It does not prove that echo requests can reach the VPS or that the guest will answer them.
There are usually two independent policy layers:
- Provider layer: a VPC firewall, network ACL, security group, or cloud firewall decides whether traffic is delivered to the VPS network interface.
- Guest layer: nftables, iptables, UFW, firewalld, or another host firewall decides whether the operating system accepts the request and sends a reply.
A deny at either layer produces the same symptom from the tester: a timeout or 100% packet loss. Troubleshooting therefore has to identify which layer dropped the packet rather than adding random rules.

Know the protocol and source before creating a rule
IPv4 versus IPv6
For IPv4, select ICMP, protocol number 1. For IPv6, select ICMPv6, protocol number 58. Cloud consoles often present these as separate protocol choices, and an IPv4 rule does not automatically permit IPv6. The address family used by the test must match the rule and the address you ping.
ICMP has no destination port
Do not create a TCP or UDP rule for a ping. ICMP Echo Request is identified by its protocol and message type, not by a port. In a provider console, choose an ICMP protocol option. In nftables, match echo-request (or the equivalent ICMPv6 type).
Choose a narrow source range
Determine the public address used by the monitoring system or test host. A single fixed IPv4 tester is usually written as a host CIDR such as 198.51.100.24/32; a managed monitoring network may require the provider’s published CIDR block. For IPv6, use the monitor’s IPv6 prefix. Google Cloud documentation notes that 0.0.0.0/0 permits every IPv4 source and recommends specifying only the ranges actually needed. The IPv6 equivalent, ::/0, is equally broad.
Do not confuse the tester’s private address with its Internet address. If the probe originates from a monitoring service, allow the service’s documented egress range, not an internal address visible on your own LAN. If the VPS is tested from another instance in the same private network, that is not an external-IP test and may follow different firewall paths.
Step 1: Allow ICMP at the VPS provider
Create an inbound (ingress) rule targeted at the VPS, its network tag, or its security group. Set the action to allow, select ICMP or ICMPv6, and enter the tester’s source CIDR. Keep the rule separate from SSH and application rules so that its scope and logging are obvious.
Google Cloud
Google Cloud firewall rules can allow ICMP and restrict the source range. In the console, open the VPC network firewall rules, create an ingress rule, choose the network containing the VPS, set the target (for example, a network tag), choose ICMP as the protocol, and enter the monitor’s IPv4 CIDR. Create a separate IPv6 rule when the VPS and tester use IPv6; Google treats the source ranges and address families separately.

An equivalent command-line pattern is:
gcloud compute firewall-rules create allow-icmp-from-monitor
--direction=INGRESS
--action=ALLOW
--rules=icmp
--source-ranges=198.51.100.24/32
--target-tags=vps-ping
Replace the example address and target tag with values from your environment. The documented default-allow-icmp rule in a default network is intended to allow tools such as ping, but do not assume it applies to a custom network, a different target tag, or an IPv6 test. Confirm the rule’s priority, network, target, and effective source range in the console.
OpenStack
OpenStack security groups deny unmatched inbound traffic by default. Add an ICMP rule to the security group attached to the VPS:
openstack security group rule create
--protocol icmp
--ingress
--remote-ip 198.51.100.24/32
SECURITY_GROUP
Use the actual security-group name or ID in place of SECURITY_GROUP. Projects can instead restrict the source by referencing another security group, where supported. For IPv6, create an ICMPv6 rule and an IPv6 remote CIDR rather than reusing the IPv4 rule. Check that the intended security group is attached to the server port; creating a rule in an unattached group has no effect.
Amazon EC2
Amazon’s documentation describes ping as ICMP traffic and requires an inbound ICMP rule in the instance’s security group. Edit the security group’s inbound rules, add a custom ICMP rule for IPv4 Echo Request, and set the source to the monitoring address or CIDR. Add a separate IPv6 ICMP rule when using the instance’s IPv6 address. Avoid selecting an unrestricted source unless public reachability is an explicit requirement.

- The rule is ingress, not egress; replies normally use the provider’s established-return handling.
- The rule targets the correct instance, network interface, tag, project, or security group.
- The source CIDR includes the tester’s actual public address.
- The rule has a higher effective priority than a deny rule.
- IPv4 and IPv6 rules are both present when both families are monitored.
- Logging or flow-log counters are enabled when available, so you can see whether requests arrive.
Step 2: Permit echo requests in the guest firewall
After the provider accepts the packet, the operating system still has to accept it. Identify the firewall frontend in use before changing anything. Running both UFW and a hand-written nftables policy can produce confusing results because one tool may install a later drop rule. Make a backup of the active ruleset and ensure you have console access before applying a restrictive change.
nftables IPv4 rule
In an nftables ruleset, an IPv4 echo request can be accepted with:

ip protocol icmp icmp type echo-request accept
Place the accept statement in the input chain before a later catch-all drop. To restrict it to a monitor, add a source match:
ip saddr 198.51.100.24/32 ip protocol icmp icmp type echo-request accept
The exact placement depends on your table and chain names. A rule in a chain that is not attached to the input hook will not filter incoming packets, and a rule after an unconditional drop will never be reached.
nftables IPv6 rule
IPv6 requires ICMPv6 matching:
ip6 nexthdr icmpv6 icmpv6 type echo-request accept
For a fixed IPv6 monitor range, add an ip6 saddr match. Do not replace this with the IPv4 rule; ICMPv6 is a distinct protocol and also carries essential neighbor-discovery messages that should not be blocked indiscriminately.
Rate limiting and exposure
A rate limit can reduce noise while preserving diagnostics. For example, an nftables rule can accept a limited number of echo requests per second and let excess packets follow the chain’s normal policy:
ip protocol icmp icmp type echo-request limit rate 5/second accept
Choose a rate appropriate for your monitor; the value is an example, not a universal safe limit. If you need every probe to receive a reply, do not impose a limit lower than the probe frequency. The nftables documentation cautions that accepting echo requests also lets probes discover that the host is alive. Ping does not expose a TCP service by itself, but it reveals liveness and can add unsolicited traffic.
Other Linux firewall frontends
If the server is managed with UFW or firewalld, create the equivalent ICMP echo-request allowance through that frontend rather than editing generated nftables rules directly. Command names and syntax vary by distribution and release. Confirm that the change is saved in the frontend’s persistent configuration; an ad-hoc runtime rule may disappear at reboot. After saving, reload the service and inspect the resulting nftables ruleset or counters.

Step 3: Test from a truly external network
Run the test from a host outside the VPS provider’s private network and use the address family you intend to monitor:
ping VPS_PUBLIC_IPV4
For IPv6, use:
ping -6 VPS_PUBLIC_IPV6
On some systems the command is named ping6. A successful result should show replies from the expected public address, with latency and a nonzero time-to-live or hop-limit. A timeout does not identify the failing layer by itself.
Verify the destination address before interpreting the result. Check the provider’s interface details, DNS records, and local routing table. A stale DNS record, an unassociated floating address, or testing an internal address can make a correct firewall configuration appear broken. Test IPv4 and IPv6 separately; success in one family says nothing about the other.

Find the blocked layer with counters and logs
No request appears in provider logs or flow counters
The request is probably blocked before the guest. Recheck the tester’s public source address, the destination’s public-address association, the provider rule’s network and target, rule priority, and any upstream network ACL. Confirm that the test really leaves the external network; corporate or hotel networks may filter outbound ICMP.
The provider sees the request, but the host counter stays at zero
The packet is not reaching the expected guest interface. Common causes include a wrong public address, a missing route or interface attachment, testing IPv6 while only IPv4 is configured, or a provider policy that logs the attempt but does not deliver it to this instance. Inspect the VPS interface addresses and routes and capture traffic on the expected interface if you have console access.
The host counter increments, but no reply leaves
The request reached the firewall, so inspect rule order and counters for a later drop. Also check the kernel’s ICMP settings, the input chain’s policy, and the route back to the tester. A reply sent through a different interface or address can be lost by reverse-path filtering or an asymmetric route. Verify that the source family is correct: an IPv4 request needs an IPv4 route, and an IPv6 request needs an IPv6 route and permitted ICMPv6 handling.

IPv4 works but IPv6 fails
Create and verify a separate ICMPv6 provider rule with the tester’s IPv6 CIDR, an ICMPv6 guest rule, and a working IPv6 address and default route. Cloud documentation treats these protocols and source ranges separately. Do not broaden an IPv4 rule and expect it to change IPv6 behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSecurity decisions before opening ping
Allowing ping is usually useful for uptime monitoring, path diagnostics, and basic reachability checks, but it is not required for SSH or for most application traffic. The principal trade-off is information disclosure: an allowed Echo Reply confirms that the host is alive and can be used for network reconnaissance. It can also generate probe traffic during scans or floods.
Use these controls to keep the rule proportional:
- Allow only the monitoring service’s documented IPv4 and IPv6 CIDRs whenever possible.
- Use
/32for one fixed IPv4 tester and the narrowest IPv6 prefix that covers the service. - Keep ICMP rules separate and named clearly, such as
allow-icmp-from-monitor, so they can be audited or revoked. - Enable provider flow logs and host counters during rollout, then retain the logging needed for operations.
- Apply a sensible nftables rate limit if occasional diagnostics are sufficient.
- Do not assume that allowing ping protects or exposes application ports; TCP and UDP services still require their own rules.
If your monitoring system supports TCP, HTTPS, or an agent check, you can use those for service health and leave unsolicited ping blocked. If network-layer reachability is a requirement, restrict the source rather than opening ICMP to the entire Internet.
Make the configuration survive reboots and automation
Provider firewall rules are normally independent of the guest lifecycle, but verify that an infrastructure-as-code definition or policy template owns the rule. A manually created console rule can disappear when an instance is recreated or when a project policy is reapplied. Record the rule’s target, source CIDR, protocol, and purpose in the same change system used for other network controls.
On the VPS, save the rule through the active firewall manager. For nftables, ensure the distribution’s persistent service loads the intended ruleset at boot; for UFW or firewalld, use its permanent configuration and reload mechanism. Reboot-test a noncritical instance or schedule a maintenance check, then run the external probe again. Monitoring should alert on both loss of replies and unexpected changes to the provider or guest rule.

Complete verification checklist
- Write down the VPS’s public IPv4 and, if used, public IPv6 addresses.
- Write down the external tester’s actual public IPv4 and IPv6 source ranges.
- Create a provider ingress allow rule for ICMP or ICMPv6, targeted at the correct VPS, with the narrow source CIDR.
- Confirm that no higher-priority deny or network ACL overrides the allow.
- Add the matching echo-request rule to the guest firewall, before any catch-all drop.
- Save the guest configuration through its firewall frontend so it reloads after reboot.
- Run
pingfrom outside the provider’s private network; runping -6separately for IPv6. - Check provider flow logs, guest rule counters, interface addresses, and return routes if the test fails.
- After the test succeeds, remove temporary broad ranges and leave only the monitoring sources required.
The reliable model is simple: provider ingress permission, guest echo-request permission, and a valid return path must all exist for the same protocol and source family. Narrow the source, preserve the configuration, and use counters to locate the exact gate when replies stop.
