On a Pixel phone, Android does not use one device-wide “unknown sources” switch. Instead, you grant permission to the particular app that downloaded or opened the APK—such as your browser or file manager—install the app, then revoke that permission. A trusted source means a download you have independently verified, preferably the developer’s official site; the permission itself does not verify the APK or make it safe.
Google recommends installing apps through Google Play. Its Android Help documentation warns: “If you download apps from unknown sources, your device and personal information can be at risk.” Use the steps below only when you understand who supplied the APK and why you need it.
What the Android APK permission actually does
An APK is the installable package used by Android apps. When an APK comes from outside Google Play, Android blocks the installation until the app handling the file has permission to install unknown apps. On recent Pixel software, that permission belongs to the source app—not to the APK and not to the whole phone.
For example, if Chrome downloads an APK, Chrome needs the permission. If you open the same file through a file manager, the file manager may need permission instead. Granting access to one app does not automatically authorize every other browser, messaging app, or file manager.

- What it does not prove: Android has not certified the developer, checked that the download is genuine, or guaranteed that the app is free of malware.
- Recommended practice: enable the permission for the one installation, complete the install, and turn it off again.
This is a narrowly scoped setting, not a declaration that you trust every APK on the phone. If you later choose a different app to open the same file, Android can ask for permission again because the new source app has not been authorized.
Before you install: verify the source and the file
Prefer Google Play when it is available
Google Play provides the normal distribution and update path that Google recommends. An APK may be necessary for an app that is unavailable in your country, an older compatible release, an enterprise deployment, or software supplied directly by its developer, but installing outside Play increases the chance of harmful, deceptive, or modified apps.
There is no cable, computer, ADB setup, or paid security product required for the ordinary Pixel procedure. Those may be relevant to specialized deployments, but for a one-time APK install the phone’s existing settings are sufficient.

Use a source you can independently verify
Download from the developer’s official website or another source that the developer explicitly identifies. Check the site’s spelling, domain, release notes, version number, and contact information. Do not treat a search result, a download counter, a forum attachment, or a random mirror as proof of authenticity.
If the developer publishes a checksum or signature, compare it using the developer’s instructions. A matching checksum can show that your file matches the published file; it does not by itself establish that the publisher is trustworthy. If you cannot identify who produced the APK or why it is being offered, stop rather than granting permission.
Check the app’s practical risk
- Confirm that the requested permissions make sense for the app’s purpose.
- Look for a current version and a documented update method.
- Avoid “cracked,” pirated, modified, or repackaged APKs.
- Do not install an APK sent unexpectedly by a message, pop-up, or remote helper.
- Keep a backup of important data before installing software from outside Play.
Record the developer name, package name, version, and download location before installing. That makes it easier to identify the app later, compare an update with the developer’s documentation, or remove it if the file turns out not to be what you expected.

- Tap the downloaded file to begin installation. Android displays a warning that the source is not currently allowed.
- Tap Settings in that warning.
- Turn on Allow from this source for the app that downloaded or opened the APK.
- Use the back gesture or back button to return to the installer.
- Review the package name and requested access, then tap Install if you have verified the file and want to proceed.
- When Android reports that installation is complete, close the installer and revoke the source permission using the steps in the next section.
Read the confirmation screen instead of tapping through it automatically. The package name should match the developer’s documentation, and the app should be the one you intended to install. If Android identifies a different developer or package, cancel and recheck the download.

The setting is tied to the source app you selected. If you later open the APK with a different app and Android blocks it again, that is expected: the second app needs its own permission.
Turn the permission off after installation
Leaving the permission enabled gives that app a continuing route to start installations from APK files. Revoke it when you are finished:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Open Special app access.
- Tap Install unknown apps.
- Select the browser, file manager, or other app you used.
- Switch off Allow from this source.
Disabling this permission does not uninstall the app you just installed. It prevents that source app from initiating another outside-Play installation until you deliberately enable access again.

Disable the toggle for every source app you temporarily authorized, not just the one that performed the download.
Google Play Protect: keep the safety layer enabled
Play Protect checks apps during installation and regularly scans apps already on the device. If it identifies a potentially harmful application, Google says it may warn you, disable the app, or remove it.
Play Protect is an additional defense, not a certificate that every APK is safe. It can miss a new or disguised threat, and a clean scan does not establish that the developer is legitimate. Do not disable Play Protect as a routine way to install an APK. If it warns about a file, pause the installation and verify the developer and download again from an official source rather than bypassing the warning automatically.
Keep the phone connected long enough for the scan and any warning to appear. A warning may concern the app’s behavior or reputation, while the source permission only controls whether installation may start; they are separate decisions.
When Android shows an unverified-developer warning
The ordinary Allow from this source switch and a developer-verification block are different controls. The first authorizes a particular app to start an APK installation. The second concerns whether Android can associate the app with a verified developer under Google’s newer verification system.

Google’s current user guidance describes an advanced flow for users who accept the risks of installing from an unverified developer. That flow includes a one-time setup and a 24-hour security delay. After the delay, the user can choose to keep the advanced flow enabled for seven days or indefinitely. The wording and availability can depend on the device and rollout stage.
What to do at the warning
- Stop if you did not expect the warning, cannot identify the developer, or cannot explain why the app is not coming from Play.
- Read the developer and package details shown by Android. Compare them with the developer’s official documentation.
- If you intentionally need the APK and accept the risk, follow the on-screen advanced-verification instructions. Expect the 24-hour delay rather than looking for a shortcut.
- After the waiting period, choose the shortest enabled period that meets your need. A temporary seven-day window is less exposure than leaving the advanced flow enabled indefinitely.
- Once the app is installed, disable the source app’s Allow from this source permission as described above.
Do not confuse the end of the 24-hour delay with proof that the APK is safe. The delay is an additional control for an unverified developer; you still need to confirm the developer, package, source, permissions, and update plan.
Why rollout details are not universal
Google describes developer verification as a phased change for certified Android devices. Its current developer guidance says regional requirements begin in September 2026, with broader expansion planned for 2027. The exact behavior depends on device certification, region, Android software, and whether the installation comes from Play or another channel. Do not assume that a rule shown on one phone applies to every Android device.
Because the rollout is phased, one user may see only the normal source-permission warning while another sees the unverified-developer flow. Follow the message shown on your device and check Google’s current help for your region if the behavior differs from these examples.

The external-APK route is therefore a deliberate exception, not a replacement for Play. If the developer offers the same current version in Play, using Play usually avoids the extra source permission and gives you a clearer update path.
If the setting or installer does not behave as expected
There is no “Settings” button in the warning
Open Android Settings and search for Install unknown apps. On Pixel, the documented route is Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps. Select the app that opened the APK and enable Allow from this source, then return to the file.
The permission is enabled but installation is still blocked
- Confirm that you enabled the permission for the app currently opening the APK, not a different browser or file manager.
- Re-download the file from the verified source in case it is incomplete or damaged.
- Check that the APK supports your Android version and device architecture.
- Read the exact warning. A developer-verification block, a Play Protect warning, and an ordinary source-permission block require different decisions.
- If the file is from an unverified developer and you cannot establish its identity, do not continue merely because the switch is available.
Do not repeatedly enable the toggle while ignoring a changed warning. Note the exact text, identify which control it refers to, and resolve that issue first. A source-permission setting cannot fix an invalid file, an incompatible release, or an unresolved developer identity.

The APK opens in the wrong app
Save the file, then use the app you trust to open it. Android will apply the permission to that app. If you use a file manager after downloading with a browser, grant access only to the file manager if that is the app that starts the installation, and revoke it afterward.

The app installs but will not run
An APK can install successfully and still be incompatible, incomplete, or dependent on components unavailable on your device. Uninstall it if it behaves unexpectedly, restore from your backup if needed, and obtain a supported release from the developer or Google Play. Do not keep trying unrelated APK variants from random sites.
You are using a non-Pixel phone
Manufacturers can change menu names and installation behavior, and some custom Android versions do not follow Google’s Pixel steps exactly. Use Settings search for Install unknown apps, then consult the device maker’s current support instructions. The principle remains the same: authorize the specific source app, install only a verified package, and revoke access afterward.
How to remove an APK you no longer trust
- Open Settings > Apps and select the installed app.
- Tap Uninstall and confirm.
- Review other apps installed at the same time and remove anything you do not recognize.
- Run a Play Protect scan and follow any warning it presents.
- Change passwords or contact your organization’s administrator if the app had access to sensitive accounts or data and you suspect compromise.
Uninstalling the app does not undo data it may have copied or actions it may have taken. That is why source verification and cautious permissions matter before installation.

Frequently asked questions
Is enabling “Allow from this source” the same as trusting the APK?
No. It is only an installation permission for one source app. You still need to verify the developer and file yourself.
Can I leave the permission enabled?
You can, but there is little reason to leave it on after a one-time installation. Turn it off to reduce the chance of an accidental or unwanted APK installation from that source app.
Should I disable Play Protect to install an APK?
No. Keep Play Protect enabled. If it warns, treat the warning as a reason to verify the app or stop, not as a routine obstacle to bypass.
Why does Android mention a 24-hour delay?
That delay belongs to Google’s advanced flow for installing from an unverified developer. It is separate from the normal per-source permission and may appear only where the newer developer-verification system applies.
Will these Pixel instructions work on every Android phone?

Do I need to enable the permission for the whole phone?
No. On Pixel, authorize only the browser, file manager, or other app that actually opens the APK. Other apps remain unauthorized unless you enable them separately.
