A marketplace webhook failure and a 429 from a metrics API are different events. The first concerns delivery to your callback; the second means a poll was throttled, so it did not produce a valid observation. Track them separately, and never treat a missing or throttled poll as a clean delivery window.
That distinction matters when you combine provider notifications with periodic API checks: your alert should describe what failed, while your checkpoint should advance only after a complete, saved observation. The exact retry and dashboard behavior depends on the platform and operation.
What should a delivery monitor count as a failure?
Model the notification path and the monitoring path separately. A webhook can fail to reach or be accepted by your endpoint while a metrics poll succeeds; conversely, a throttled poll can leave you without a current view even when webhook delivery is healthy.
Use distinct event types or status fields rather than rolling everything into one “delivery errors” number:

- Webhook delivery failure: the provider could not successfully deliver a notification to your callback, or your callback returned a non-success response.
- Poll throttled: the metrics API rejected or limited a request, such as with HTTP
429. This is not, by itself, evidence that a webhook delivery failed. - Transport or timeout failure: the poll or callback request did not complete reliably.
- Incomplete pagination: one or more required pages were not retrieved, so the window is not complete.
- Parse or schema failure: a response arrived but could not be interpreted safely.
- Checkpoint persistence failure: a result was fetched but not durably recorded.
- Alert notification failure: the monitoring system detected an issue but could not deliver its own alert.
These are useful engineering categories, not a standard status taxonomy imposed by every marketplace. Keep the underlying delivery ID, request details, and exception context in logs or traces; use bounded metric labels such as marketplace, endpoint class, failure class, and deployment region so that individual IDs do not become metric dimensions.
When is a polling window complete?
Consider a polling window complete only after the API request succeeds, every required page has been fetched, the result has passed validation, and the observation has been durably saved. Only then should the monitor advance its checkpoint or report the window as observed.

If a poll returns 429, retain the previous successful checkpoint and mark the new window as throttled or delayed—not as zero failures and not as a successful sample. Walmart’s subscription setup instructions specifically tell integrators to apply backoff and retry later for a 429. Retaining the checkpoint is a prudent implementation rule; it is not a checkpoint guarantee made by every marketplace API. See Walmart’s subscription setup instructions.

- Record the attempt. Store the marketplace, operation, attempt time, response status, and relevant request or correlation identifier.
- Preserve the last completed observation. Do not overwrite it with a partial response or advance the cursor because a throttled request was attempted.
- Schedule a bounded retry. Honor a documented
Retry-Afterheader if that API returns one. If it does not, follow that API’s published limit guidance and use a bounded backoff strategy rather than retrying continuously. - Complete and persist the observation. Fetch all required pages, validate the result, and durably save it before advancing the checkpoint.
- Raise a freshness alert when appropriate. If the latest complete observation becomes too old for your operational needs, alert that monitoring data is stale or unavailable. Do not label the unobserved interval healthy.
Do not assume a Retry-After header exists. In the cited Amazon Selling Partner API reference, x-amzn-RateLimit-Limit describes usage-plan limits when available; it is not a Retry-After value, and the reference does not establish that all operations expose either header. The documented limit for Amazon’s createUnexpectedProblem operation is 1 request per second with a burst of 5. Those figures apply to that operation, not to all Selling Partner API calls. See the Amazon operation reference.

How should webhook receipts be handled?
For an incoming notification, make the receipt durable before acknowledging it, then do slower processing asynchronously. This reduces the chance that a brief application delay causes the provider to retry a notification you have already accepted. It also gives you a reliable record to reconcile against subsequent processing.
- Receive the HTTP request and validate enough of it to safely identify and enqueue the event.
- Write the event and its identifier to durable storage or a durable queue.
- Return the success response required by that platform after the durable write succeeds.
- Process the event asynchronously, recording processing outcome separately from receipt outcome.
- If the durable write fails, do not falsely acknowledge successful receipt; follow the platform’s documented response and retry behavior.
Walmart’s guidance recommends a public HTTPS callback, a 2xx response on success, and acknowledgment after durable write. Its performance webhook documentation says it retries when the endpoint does not return 2xx. Walmart also recommends using sandbox test delivery, logging an identifier such as eventId, confirming the subscription, reviewing failure emails sent to administrator addresses, and checking endpoint health. See Walmart’s delivery-health guidance and its performance webhook documentation.

Which platform behaviors are documented?
Use platform-specific retry and visibility behavior as implementation inputs, not as universal assumptions. These examples illustrate why your monitor should distinguish provider delivery attempts from your own polling and application processing.

| Platform and documented scope | Delivery or polling behavior | Monitoring implication |
|---|---|---|
| Walmart Marketplace performance webhooks; documented availability for sellers listing on Walmart marketplaces in the United States | Notifications arrive by HTTP POST, and payload.notificationType identifies the type. Documented types include activity-triggered ALARMS and a weekly REPORT at Monday 5:00 AM Pacific Time. The webhook documentation says non-2xx responses are retried; the cited overview does not specify a retry schedule. The setup guidance says to back off and retry later after a 429 response. |
Track callback response and poll status separately. Do not apply the weekly schedule or US availability beyond this documented Walmart scope. Sources: performance webhooks and subscription setup. |
| Shopify webhooks | Shopify says it retries failed webhook calls up to eight times within four hours; persistent failure can result in subscription removal. Its developer dashboard can show delivery metrics, including counts and response times. | Monitor retrying and subscription status using Shopify-specific behavior. Do not copy this retry schedule to another provider. Source: Shopify webhook troubleshooting. |

The cited operation reference lists a default rate of 1 request per second and burst of 5 for that operation. It describes x-amzn-RateLimit-Limit as the usage-plan limit when available. |

What should alerts and dashboards show?
Build a view that answers two separate questions: “Are provider notifications reaching and being accepted by my endpoint?” and “Do I have a complete, recent metrics observation?” A useful monitor can include:
- Webhook delivery attempts, response classes, and success or failure rate over a defined window.
- Most recent successful poll and the age of the last complete observation.
- Throttled poll count and retry timing, separately from transport, parsing, and persistence errors.
- Pagination completeness and checkpoint age.
- Queue depth or processing delay for durably received webhook events.
- Whether the alerting channel itself is delivering notifications.
Marketplace-native dashboards may expose provider-side attempts, while integration-owned telemetry can record poll checkpoints and application processing outcomes. Feature coverage varies, so verify each platform’s current documentation rather than assuming every dashboard offers retry history, manual retry, payload inspection, response times, or alerting.
As one example of a dashboard feature set—not a marketplace-wide capability—HighLevel documents event browsing, success and failure rates, filtering by event type and status code, payload inspection, and retry-attempt monitoring in its Webhook Logs Dashboard.
Quick Recap
How do you investigate an apparent delivery gap?
- Check observation freshness first. Determine whether the interval is actually covered by a completed poll or whether the last request was throttled, timed out, or only partly paginated.
- Inspect provider delivery attempts. Look for the event identifier, callback response, and retry history where the provider exposes them. For Walmart, confirm the subscription and review endpoint health and failure-email notifications.
- Compare receipt with processing. A durable receipt with delayed downstream processing is different from a notification that never reached the endpoint.
- Confirm the relevant platform rule. A provider’s retry schedule, dashboard, and notification scope may differ from another platform’s; use the documentation for the exact integration.
- Recover without fabricating a healthy interval. Retry the poll within the platform’s limits, resume from the last complete checkpoint, and reconcile missing data where the API allows it. Keep the affected interval visibly incomplete until the observation is complete.
