More players usually come from a reliable server listing, a populated first session, and a community that gives people a reason to return. Set up a unique Steam Game Server Login Token (GSLT), make your name and description searchable, verify that a clean client can join, then coordinate launch events and measure every promotion link. Follow Facepunch and Steam rules throughout: prohibited advertising practices can remove your visibility or bring other sanctions.
Start with discoverability and compliance
Advertising cannot compensate for a server that is difficult to find, impossible to join, or removed from a platform. Facepunch allows community servers, advertising, sponsorships and product placements, but violations can lead to delisting or other sanctions. Read the current server policy at Facepunch’s server terms before accepting sponsors or adding promotional material.

A Steam Game Server Login Token is the foundation of server-browser visibility. The Garry’s Mod wiki says that, since the May 2020 update, every Garry’s Mod server should have a GSLT; servers without one suffer a severe ranking penalty. The 4 May 2020 announcement described the penalty for anonymous servers as a “massive ranking penalty” that prevents them from appearing at the top of the browser. Follow the token instructions in the official Steam Game Server Accounts guide.
Create a separate token for each server instance. Pass the token at startup with:

+sv_setsteamaccount YOURLOGINTOKENHEREDo not reuse one token across several servers. Keep the token private, and replace it if you believe it has been exposed. A token does not guarantee a high position; it removes a documented disadvantage so that the other ranking factors can work normally.
Know what the browser can evaluate
The official multiplayer guide explains that server ranking uses multiple variables, including ping, the number of players currently on the server, and whether the current map is installed. The browser can search server names and map names. These facts produce three practical priorities:
- Host in a region that gives your intended audience a reasonable ping.
- Keep the advertised map installed and available to joining clients.
- Plan periods of real activity instead of allowing the listing to remain empty all day.

Make the server listing convert interest into a join
Write a searchable, honest name
Put the information a player would search for in the server name, in a readable order:
- Gamemode or role-play style.
- Region and primary language.
- A distinctive feature that is genuinely available now.
- Optional status such as a scheduled event, provided it remains accurate.
A name that says only “best server” gives neither the browser nor the player useful context. Avoid stuffing the name with claims you cannot maintain. If the server is role-play, build, sandbox, or another mode, state that plainly so a click is from an interested player rather than a mismatch.

Use the description as a pre-join contract
Answer the questions that normally cause a player to abandon a join attempt:
- What gamemode and map are running?
- Which region and language should a player expect?
- What rules govern chat, griefing, role-play and moderation?
- What makes this server different from another server using the same mode?
- Which Workshop collection or other content is required?
- When are staff or events normally online?
Keep the description synchronized with the actual configuration. If a collection changes, update the description before the next promotion. A short, accurate description converts better than a long list of features that a new player cannot see after joining.
Test the complete join path
Use a clean Garry’s Mod client, not only an administrator account with cached files. Search the exact server name, connect, download the required Workshop content, spawn, and play through the first few minutes. Check that:
- The advertised map loads without a missing-content error.
- The Workshop collection is public and stable.
- Rules and help information are visible in-game.
- New players can understand what to do without staff intervention.
- Moderators can respond when someone reports a problem.
Fix join friction before buying or arranging promotion. Every failed connection wastes the attention you paid to acquire.
Seed a populated first session
Player count is one of the documented server-browser variables, so the first live session matters more than an announcement sent to an empty listing. Coordinate staff, friends and existing members for a specific launch window. Publish the date, start time, region and activity in advance, then have moderators ready before the window opens.

Use a schedule rather than a one-time spike
Choose recurring times that your existing members can actually attend. For example, a weekly scenario night gives a new visitor a clear reason to return. Keep the normal server configuration available between events so the listing remains understandable; do not change the mode or map without updating the name and description.
Make the first ten minutes useful
New arrivals should encounter an active scene, not an empty lobby and a request to wait. Assign a greeter, explain the basic rules in a short welcome message, and start an activity that works with the current player count. If the event needs a minimum number of players, say so in the announcement instead of letting visitors guess.
Build an owned community around the server
A community space turns a browser visit into an audience you can reach again. A Discord server can provide rules, announcements, support, event reminders and a place for players to share creations. The official Garry’s Mod Discord listing describes finding people to play with, showing creations, discussing updates and asking for help; its page showed 15,134 people online and 124,229 members on 15 October 2026. Those counts are volatile and are context for the size of the wider community, not a guaranteed advertising audience. See the listing at Discord’s official Garry’s Mod server page.
Organize channels for action
- Start here: rules, how to connect and a concise description of the server.
- Announcements: maintenance, changelogs and event times, with permission limited to staff.
- Support: connection help and bug reports that staff can actually answer.
- Events: sign-ups, reminders and a post-event recap.
- Community: conversation, screenshots and creator spotlights.
Use one permanent invite path for your own tracking, and separate invite paths when a creator, forum or social post needs its own measurement. Make moderation rules visible before asking people to participate.
Publish reasons to return
Promotion works better when every visit leads to a next event, update or story. Rotate several formats instead of repeating a “join now” message:

- Changelogs: explain what changed, why it changed and when it is live.
- Event notices: state the exact time, mode, map and expected duration.
- Gameplay clips: show the distinctive feature in a few seconds, with the server name readable in the title or description.
- Creator spotlights: feature player builds, scenarios or artwork with permission.
- Maintenance notes: tell members when the server will be unavailable and when it is expected back.
Steamworks documents several built-in ways to communicate. Announcements can appear in followers’ activity feeds, the community hub and the store page. Steamworks also documents live-streaming and rich presence, which can show gameplay and communicate a player’s current state. Review the available tools at Steamworks marketing tools. Use the features your team can maintain; an abandoned announcement feed signals the same neglect as an empty server.
Choose promotion channels by job
No controlled study or publisher statistic establishes which channel produces the most Garry’s Mod server players. Treat the following as a practical allocation of documented platform capabilities and operational inference, then let your own measurements decide where to spend time.

Match the message to the channel. A browser name should be concise and searchable; a video can demonstrate a mechanic; an announcement can explain a change; Discord can answer questions and confirm attendance. Reusing the same text everywhere makes it harder to learn which message worked.
Measure reach, conversion and retention
Tag every external path
Give each external placement a distinct URL with UTM parameters or a separate invite path. Steamworks explicitly documents UTM analytics for measuring external marketing, advertising and website links. Use one tagged destination for a creator video, another for a social post and another for a community partner. Record the date, channel, creative and event attached to each link.
Use a small scorecard

Compare channels using the same event window. A post that brings 20 curious clicks but no joins has a different problem from a post that brings five joins who return every week. Do not call a channel successful from impressions alone.

A practical 30-day promotion sequence
- Days 1–3 — Prepare: obtain a unique GSLT for each server, add

- Week 2 — Open the community: organize Discord channels, publish rules and support instructions, create event reminders, and issue distinct invite paths for each planned promotion.
- Week 3 — Run the first staffed event: coordinate staff, friends and existing members, publish one clear announcement, and collect join, attendance and return data.
- Week 4 — Iterate: publish a changelog or creator spotlight, repeat the event at the most reliable time, compare tagged channels, and remove placements that create attention but no healthy sessions.
Keep a simple log of configuration changes. If the map, Workshop collection or rules change, note the date so a drop in joins can be matched to the change rather than blamed on a channel without evidence.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The server is hard to find
Verify that every instance has its own GSLT and that the startup parameter is present. Check the spelling of the searchable name, confirm the advertised map is installed, and test from a client outside the administrator’s machine. A GSLT removes the severe anonymous-server penalty, but ranking still depends on several variables.

People click but cannot join
Repeat the clean-client test. Look for a private or unstable Workshop collection, a missing map, excessive downloads or a server that is full outside the event window. Update the description so prerequisites and scheduled times are explicit. A promotion cannot convert if the first connection fails.
The launch is visible but empty
Move from an always-on announcement to a staffed time. Ask existing members to commit to the same window, start an activity that works with the expected headcount, and announce the next session before the current one ends. Player count is a ranking variable, so coordinated presence is more useful than scattered attendance.
Players arrive once and do not return
Check whether the first session delivered the promised mode and feature. Publish a clear next event, explain changes in a changelog, invite feedback in Discord, and inspect moderation response time. Retention data should guide the next event more than raw impressions.
Keep advertising inside Workshop and platform boundaries
Facepunch’s Workshop rules prohibit putting unsolicited, intrusive or web advertisements into addons. They also prohibit advertising servers in the Garry’s Mod Artwork section. Server sponsorships and product placements still need to comply with the server policy and the rules of every platform where the message appears. Keep promotional material clearly separate from gameplay files, disclose paid relationships where required, and give players a functional way to reach the server without intrusive redirects.
Set realistic expectations
A technically sound listing, a populated launch window and a responsive community create the conditions for growth; none guarantees a particular player count. Use the browser’s documented signals to improve discoverability, use events to create activity, and use tagged links and return behavior to decide which channels deserve more effort. Because there is no controlled evidence ranking one promotion channel above all others, your own join, retention and operational data is the appropriate basis for reallocating time.
