A routine stock split normally creates no immediate U.S. federal income tax. You receive more shares representing the same ownership interest, so your total basis stays the same while the basis assigned to each share falls (or rises in a reverse-style adjustment). When you later sell, calculate the gain or loss from the correct post-split basis for the specific lot sold. A 2-for-1 split turns 100 shares with a $15 basis per share into 200 shares with a $7.50 basis per share; the position’s total $1,500 basis is unchanged.

What a stock split changes—and what it does not

In an ordinary split, the issuer changes the number of shares outstanding without changing your proportional ownership. The split ratio tells you how many new shares replace each old share. In a 2-for-1 split, every old share becomes two shares. In a 3-for-2 split, each old share becomes 1.5 shares, subject to the issuer’s handling of any fractional share. The number of shares changes, but the total tax basis for each purchase lot does not.

The Internal Revenue Service states that stock splits do not create a taxable event merely because additional shares are issued. You do not report dividend or wage income for the extra shares. Tax consequences generally arise when you dispose of shares, and the gain or loss then depends on your sale proceeds, adjusted basis, and holding-period information.

Item Before a 2-for-1 split After a 2-for-1 split
Shares in one lot 100 200
Basis per share $15 $7.50
Total lot basis $1,500 $1,500
Immediate federal tax from the split None solely for receiving split shares None solely for receiving split shares

Do not treat the additional shares as a new purchase. Do not double the total basis, and do not leave the old per-share figure unchanged after the split. Either error can materially distort the gain or loss reported when you sell.

Calculate the new basis for every purchase lot

Keep lots separate even when the account displays one combined position. Different purchases can have different prices, acquisition dates, commissions, wash-sale adjustments, or other basis changes. The split changes the share count for each lot by the same factor, but it does not merge the lots.

Step 1: Write down the split ratio

Record the issuer’s ratio and effective date from the corporate-action notice. Convert the ratio to a split factor by dividing new shares by old shares. A 2-for-1 split has a factor of 2; a 3-for-2 split has a factor of 1.5. Use the issuer’s published treatment if the calculation creates a fractional share or a cash payment instead of a whole share.

Step 2: Preserve each lot’s original records

For each purchase, record the original quantity, acquisition date, price, commissions and fees, and any earlier basis adjustments. Basis generally starts with purchase price plus purchase costs. Dividend-reinvestment purchases are separate acquisitions and should remain separate lots. A split does not erase those dates or prior adjustments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: Multiply the lot’s shares by the split factor

Apply the factor to the quantity in that lot. For a 2-for-1 split, 100 shares become 200. For a 3-for-2 split, 100 shares become 150. Keep the result associated with the same original acquisition date and lot identifier.

Step 4: Leave the lot’s total adjusted basis unchanged by the split

If a lot had a $1,000 adjusted basis immediately before a 2-for-1 split, it still has a $1,000 adjusted basis immediately after the split. The split itself is not a new cost and does not justify adding another $1,000.

Step 5: Divide total basis by the new share count

Use this calculation:

Post-split per-share basis = lot’s unchanged total adjusted basis ÷ post-split shares

Round only as your broker or tax software instructs for display. Keep enough precision in your ledger so that the per-share amount multiplied by the shares sold reconciles to the lot’s full basis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 6: Reconcile the result with the broker

Compare your calculation with the broker’s updated position and basis record. Save the issuer’s split notice, pre- and post-split statements, trade confirmations, and any written broker explanation if the figures differ.

Worked 2-for-1 example with multiple lots

Suppose you bought two blocks before the same split:

Lot Original shares Original price Total basis before split Shares after 2-for-1 Per-share basis after split Total basis after split
Lot A 100 $10 $1,000 200 $5 $1,000
Lot B 100 $12 $1,200 200 $6 $1,200
Combined position 200 Not one uniform price $2,200 400 Not one uniform basis $2,200

The account now shows 400 shares with $2,200 of combined basis, but the lots must remain distinct: 200 shares at $5 per share and 200 shares at $6 per share. Their acquisition dates and holding periods can differ, which affects the tax treatment when you sell.

What happens when you sell split-adjusted shares

When shares are sold, the taxable result is based on the proceeds and the adjusted basis of the shares disposed of. The split does not by itself create a gain or loss; it changes the basis assigned to each share so that the unchanged total basis is spread across the new quantity.

Specific identification

If you can adequately identify the shares sold and notify the broker at the time of the sale, basis generally follows those specific shares. Identification is useful when lots have different prices or holding periods. Keep the broker’s lot-selection confirmation with your records.

FIFO when you cannot identify shares

If you cannot adequately identify the shares, first-in, first-out generally applies. Under FIFO, the oldest available shares are treated as sold first. After a split, FIFO still operates by original lot order; the split-created shares inherit the corresponding lot’s basis and acquisition history.

Average-basis exceptions

Special average-basis rules can apply to some mutual funds and dividend-reinvestment plans. Do not apply an average method to ordinary individual stock unless the applicable rules and your account records support it. Ask your broker or tax professional which method your security and account permit.

Decision What to use Why it matters
You selected and documented a particular lot That lot’s split-adjusted basis and acquisition date Allows the result to match the shares actually sold
You did not identify a lot FIFO, unless a permitted special method applies Prevents choosing a favorable lot after the fact
Mutual fund or qualifying dividend-reinvestment arrangement Applicable average-basis rules, if elected or required Rules differ from ordinary individual-stock lot accounting

How Form 1099-B fits into the calculation

For covered securities, the broker generally reports acquisition date, holding period, cost or other basis, and wash-sale information on Form 1099-B. Check that the post-split share quantity and per-share basis reflect the corporate action. A broker’s number is useful evidence, but it is not automatically correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shares acquired before the applicable covered-security dates, along with other noncovered positions, may not have complete basis information reported by the broker. You may need to reconstruct those lots from confirmations, statements, and your own ledger. Investor guidance cautions that not all basis adjustments appear on an account statement, so compare statements with confirmations and reinvestment records.

Fixing an incorrect broker basis

A wrong 1099-B basis does not change the actual basis of your shares. Recalculate the affected lot, retain the supporting documents, and report the correct amount.

  1. Rebuild the lot. Start with the original purchase price and purchase costs, then apply any legitimate prior adjustments. Multiply shares by the split factor while leaving total lot basis unchanged.
  2. Compare all records. Check the issuer’s split notice, trade confirmations, pre- and post-split statements, and the broker’s transaction history. Look for missing dividend-reinvestment purchases, duplicate lots, or a basis figure that was divided by the wrong factor.
  3. Enter the sale from your corrected records. Use the actual proceeds, sale date, acquisition date, and corrected adjusted basis rather than copying an erroneous field without review.
  4. Use Form 8949 when required. The Form 8949 adjustment procedure lets you report a difference between the broker-reported information and the amount you are actually reporting. Carry the resulting totals to Schedule D.
  5. Keep an explanation. Save your calculation, the 1099-B, statements, confirmations, and any written broker correction. A clear workpaper should show the original lot, split factor, new share count, unchanged total basis, and basis assigned to the shares sold.

If the broker will not correct a data error, you can still report the accurate figures, but retain enough documentation to explain the adjustment. For a large position, multiple corporate actions, or uncertain lot history, professional tax assistance can reduce the risk of an avoidable reporting error.

Covered versus noncovered positions

The distinction affects how much information arrives with your tax documents, not whether the split changed your actual basis. Covered positions generally come with broker-reported basis and holding-period data. Noncovered positions may require you to supply the original basis and acquisition date yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Covered position: Reconcile the broker’s 1099-B data to your split-adjusted lot ledger and correct discrepancies through Form 8949 reporting when necessary.
  • Noncovered position: Use confirmations, statements, dividend-reinvestment records, and corporate-action notices to establish the lot history. Do not assume a blank or incomplete broker field means the basis is zero.
  • Mixed account: Track covered and noncovered lots separately. A single ticker symbol can contain both categories if shares were acquired at different times.

Records to keep after the split

Keep the documents long enough to support the basis of every share until the relevant sale is reported and the applicable tax-record retention period has passed. A practical file should contain:

  • Purchase confirmations showing dates, quantities, prices, commissions, and fees.
  • Dividend-reinvestment statements and confirmations for every reinvested purchase.
  • The issuer’s corporate-action or stock-split notice, including the ratio and effective date.
  • Account statements immediately before and after the split.
  • Your lot ledger showing original shares, split-adjusted shares, total basis, per-share basis, and acquisition dates.
  • Sale confirmations and evidence of the lot-selection instruction.
  • Form 1099-B and any broker correspondence correcting or explaining basis data.
  • Calculations for prior basis adjustments, wash-sale amounts, or other events affecting a lot.

Store a copy outside the brokerage portal. Brokers can change statement availability, and a later account transfer may omit historical details.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Reporting the split shares as income

Receiving additional shares in a routine split is not, by itself, dividend or capital-gain income for federal purposes. Keep the notice and update your ledger instead of entering the shares as a cash receipt.

Doubling the total basis

The share count doubles in a 2-for-1 split; the total basis does not. Doubling both creates an overstated basis and understates a later gain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving the old per-share basis unchanged

A $10 per-share basis becomes $5 per share after a 2-for-1 split when total basis is unchanged. Keeping $10 would imply twice the correct total basis.

Combining all lots into one average

Combining lots can lose acquisition dates and make specific identification impossible. Preserve each lot even if your account screen displays only one aggregate line.

Assuming the broker always has the complete history

Not all basis adjustments appear on account statements, especially for older or noncovered shares. Reconcile statements with confirmations and reinvestment records.

Choosing a lot after the sale

Specific identification requires an adequate identification and broker notification. If that did not occur, FIFO generally controls; you cannot simply select the lot that produces the preferred tax result after the transaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Situations this calculation does not resolve

The method above applies to ordinary U.S. federal stock splits. Separate rules or additional facts may control in other situations:

  • State income-tax treatment can differ from federal treatment.
  • Gifts and inherited shares have special basis and holding-period rules.
  • Employee equity, restricted stock, and option transactions can involve compensation income or exercise adjustments.
  • Mergers, reorganizations, spin-offs, and exchanges may require allocation of basis among securities rather than a simple share multiplication.
  • A fractional share paid in cash can be a separate disposition that needs its own proceeds and basis calculation.
  • Broker procedures for lot selection, corrections, and historical records vary by account.

For one of these situations, obtain the transaction documents and use the rules specific to that event rather than applying the ordinary split formula mechanically.

Choosing a workflow for your tax return

Workflow Best fit What you must supply Main risk to check
Self-prepared ledger and forms Few lots, complete records, and a straightforward split Lot history, split ratio, corrected basis, Form 1099-B, Form 8949, and Schedule D entries Transcription or lot-selection errors
Capital-gains tax software Many lots or electronic broker imports Imported transactions plus manual split and basis corrections Assuming an import detected every corporate action
Tax professional Missing records, large gains, multiple adjustments, or unusual transactions All statements, notices, confirmations, and your explanation of the discrepancy Providing an incomplete lot history

Whichever workflow you choose, verify the final share count, total basis, acquisition dates, and lot used for each sale. Software can import a 1099-B accurately while still carrying forward a broker’s incomplete historical basis.

A concise decision checklist

  1. Is this an ordinary stock split rather than a merger, reorganization, option event, or cash-in-lieu transaction?
  2. What exact ratio and effective date did the issuer announce?
  3. Have you listed every purchase and reinvestment lot separately?
  4. Did you multiply each lot’s shares by the split factor while keeping total adjusted basis unchanged?
  5. Did you divide each lot’s unchanged basis by its new share count?
  6. When selling, did you document specific identification or apply FIFO where identification was unavailable?
  7. Does Form 1099-B agree with your ledger, and if not, did you use Form 8949 and Schedule D to report the correction?
  8. Have you retained the split notice, confirmations, statements, and calculation?
