Xbox privacy is not one master switch. On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, separate controls govern social visibility, communication and multiplayer, app access, family restrictions, and optional diagnostic collection. Choose the category that matches your goal, change only that setting, and verify that you edited the intended account. Menu wording can differ slightly after console software updates.
Which Xbox privacy controls are separate?
Before changing anything, identify what you are trying to limit or enable. Xbox divides privacy into several areas with different effects and scopes:
| Control area | What it affects | Typical scope | Where it is managed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Social visibility | Friend requests, followers, and club interactions | An individual Xbox account | Console privacy settings or the online privacy page |
| Communication and multiplayer | Who can communicate with the account and participate in multiplayer interactions | An individual account, with family controls for supervised accounts | Console privacy settings or the online privacy page |
| App and service privacy | Privacy choices associated with apps and online services used through Xbox | The account and the relevant app or service | Console privacy settings and the service’s own controls |
| Optional diagnostic collection | Whether Microsoft receives optional diagnostic information from Xbox | An account, a family member managed by an organizer, or the console when nobody is signed in | Data collection settings in Xbox Settings |
A diagnostic-data choice does not automatically change who can follow you, who can send messages, which multiplayer features are available, or what a separate game publisher collects. Treat each category independently.

Compare the scope before you change a setting
Three questions prevent most mistakes. First, what does the control govern: social activity, communication, multiplayer, app behavior, or diagnostics? Second, whose account is affected: your profile, a child, or another family member? Third, where does it apply: to an account, to a particular app or service, or to the console when nobody is signed in?

For example, restricting friend requests is an account-level social choice. It is not a diagnostic setting and will not necessarily change a game’s internal friends list. Likewise, reducing optional diagnostic collection concerns Microsoft’s Xbox data practices; it does not automatically disable voice chat or stop a publisher from receiving information needed to provide an online game.
How do I change Xbox privacy settings?
Use the console when you are already in front of the Xbox and want to adjust the signed-in account. The labels below are the current documented route; a software revision can place the same option under a slightly different name.
Open the privacy controls
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Open Profile & system > Settings.
- Choose Account.
- Open Privacy & online safety.
- Select Xbox privacy, then View details & customize.
You will see categories for social activity, communication, multiplayer, and related account interactions. Change the specific permission that matches your objective instead of changing every item.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChange who can send requests, follow you, or interact socially
- From View details & customize, open Friends, followers & clubs.
- Review each available choice for friend requests, following, and club activity.
- Select the audience or restriction you want for each item.
- Back out of the page after confirming the new choices.
The choices are audience controls, not a recommendation to select the broadest option. A more open setting can increase invitations, followers, and social visibility; a more restrictive setting reduces unsolicited interactions.
If you are troubleshooting unwanted contact, begin with the friend-request, follower, or club item that matches the problem. Do not assume that changing one social item changes all the others. Read the description beside each permission and make a deliberate choice based on whether you want contact from everyone, only approved contacts, or a more restricted audience.
Adjust communication and multiplayer separately
Return to Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details & customize and open the communication or multiplayer categories. These controls affect different activities. For example, limiting messages does not necessarily disable multiplayer, and changing multiplayer access does not automatically hide your social profile. Set only the permission that solves the problem you are experiencing.
Check both categories when the symptom is mixed—for instance, a child can join a match but should not receive voice or text messages. A family organizer can restrict the supervised account without changing the organizer’s own communication choices. Avoid treating an “Allow” or “Everyone” value as a default recommendation; choose the narrowest audience that still supports the way the account is used.
Review app-related privacy choices
Use the app and service privacy options in the same customization area when your concern involves an app rather than friends or multiplayer. An app may have its own account, voice, chat, or data controls as well. Xbox privacy settings should therefore be treated as one layer, not as a universal switch for every app.

When only one title behaves unexpectedly, note the title and account involved, then inspect that service’s settings separately. A setting that works for Xbox social features may not control a publisher-operated chat system, an in-game friends list, or the information that service needs to deliver its features.
Can I change Xbox privacy settings online?
Yes. Sign in to the Xbox privacy and online-safety settings page with the account you want to manage. If you are a family organizer, select the family member whose settings you intend to edit rather than assuming the page is displaying your own profile.
- Sign in with the correct Microsoft account.
- Open the Xbox privacy and online-safety settings.
- Select the relevant account or family member.
- Choose the category, such as social activity, communication, or multiplayer.
- Change the individual permissions you need.
- Select Submit before leaving the page.
Using Submit is important on the online page. Closing the browser without saving can leave the old choices in place. If a setting appears unchanged later, first sign in again and check that the page is showing the same account and category you edited.

How do I adjust Xbox data sharing?
Microsoft separates required and optional data in its Xbox data-collection summary. Required data supports operation of the product and services. Optional diagnostic data is an additional category that you can control in Xbox settings. The optional-data switch is not a replacement for social privacy, app permissions, or a publisher’s own privacy settings.
Required versus optional data
The Required and Optional labels describe different parts of Microsoft’s data approach. A preference about optional diagnostics does not mean that all collection stops, because information needed to operate an online product can remain in the Required category. It also does not promise that a separate publisher receives no information while its game or app is being used.
Change optional data collection for the signed-in account
- Open the Xbox guide and go to Profile & system > Settings.
- Open Online safety & family.
- Choose Privacy & online safety.
- Select Data collection.
- Review the optional diagnostic setting and choose the level that fits your preference.
This route addresses the account context. It does not promise to prevent all information from reaching a game or app publisher when you use that service through Xbox.
Change optional data collection for a child or another family member
- Open Settings > Online safety & family.
- Choose Family settings > Manage family members.
- Select the family member whose settings you want to manage.
- Open Privacy & online safety > Data collection.
- Review and save the optional-data choice for that member.
The organizer must target the correct family member. Changing the organizer’s setting does not change a child’s setting, and a child cannot override restrictions imposed by the family organizer.

Change the console-level setting when nobody is signed in
Xbox also documents a console-level path for periods when no user is signed in:
- Open Settings > System.
- Choose Console info.
- Review Allow optional data collection.
- Set the option according to your household’s preference.
This context is different from an individual account. A household may therefore need to review both the account setting and the console-level setting to understand what happens during signed-out use. If more than one console is used, check the signed-out option on each relevant console; an account-level change does not automatically describe every console’s no-user-signed-in behavior.
What data does Xbox share with games and apps?
Microsoft says that when someone uses an online game or app through an Xbox console, information may be shared with that game’s or app’s publisher to support, deliver, or improve the service. The statement applies to the service relationship, not just to Microsoft’s optional diagnostic switch.
- Turning off optional diagnostic collection should not be described as blocking every data transfer to every publisher.
- A game or app can have additional account, communication, telemetry, or privacy controls of its own.
- Microsoft identifies Xbox privacy settings and the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard as places to manage, access, or delete relevant data.
- The Xbox data-collection summary classifies information as Required or Optional, making the distinction explicit rather than presenting all collection as one undifferentiated setting.
Microsoft’s October 2026 Xbox summary states an average of approximately 8 MB of data per day per Xbox console. That is Microsoft’s stated average; the exact volume varies by user and should not be treated as a prediction for a particular household.
The figure is an average for a console, not a promise that every account or day will produce the same volume. Use it as context when considering optional diagnostics, not as a measurement of a particular game session or a complete accounting of data shared by every service.
How can I change my child’s Xbox privacy settings?
Parents and guardians should use family management rather than the child’s profile alone. Microsoft Family Safety supports family groups across Windows, Xbox, and mobile devices and links organizers to Xbox privacy and online-safety controls.
- Sign in as the family organizer.
- Open the family-management area and choose the child whose settings you want to review.
- Open the Xbox privacy and online-safety settings for that child.
- Review the age-appropriate defaults.
- Customize only the social, communication, multiplayer, app, or data-collection options that need changing.
- Save the changes, then verify that the child’s account is still the selected target.
Age-appropriate defaults provide a starting point, not a requirement to allow every feature. Consider the child’s age, the games they use, whether voice or text communication is necessary, and whether friends are known offline. A child account cannot change restrictions set by the family organizer.

Account-level choices follow the child’s account, while the documented no-one-signed-in option is a console-level behavior. If the household has multiple consoles, check the signed-out setting on each console where it matters. Also check that the child is signing in with the account whose settings you changed.

Family-setting pitfalls to avoid
- Do not edit the organizer’s profile and assume the child’s restrictions changed.
- Do not rely on the child’s ability to view a setting as permission to override it; organizer-imposed restrictions remain under family management.
- Do not change every category when the concern is limited to one game, one communication method, or optional diagnostics.
- After saving, test the affected behavior with the child’s account, not only with the organizer’s account.
Which setting should I change for a specific goal?
| If your goal is to… | Start with… | Do not assume it will change… |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce friend requests, followers, or club interactions | Friends, followers & clubs | Diagnostic collection or a game’s own social tools |
| Limit messages, voice communication, or multiplayer interaction | The communication or multiplayer categories under View details & customize | All app data sharing or every publisher’s chat system |
| Reduce Microsoft’s optional diagnostic collection | Online safety & family > Privacy & online safety > Data collection | Required data or information a game publisher receives while providing its service |
| Control use while no one is signed in | System > Console info > Allow optional data collection | The personal settings of each signed-in account |
| Manage a child’s access | Family settings, with the child selected as the target | The organizer’s own profile settings |
This comparison is also useful when diagnosing a problem. If unwanted contact is the issue, start with social controls. If a child can join a game but should not communicate, inspect communication and multiplayer separately. If the concern is Microsoft’s optional diagnostics, use Data collection rather than changing social audiences. If the console is used while signed out, include the console-level option in the review.
How to verify that a privacy change worked
- Confirm the account name or family member shown at the top of the page before editing.
- Write down the category you changed: social, communication, multiplayer, app privacy, or data collection.
- On the console, leave the page and reopen the same category to check the displayed choice.
- For online changes, return to the settings page after selecting Submit.
- Test only the affected behavior, such as whether a friend request can be sent or whether a communication option is available.
- If the issue involves a particular game or app, inspect that service’s privacy controls as a separate step.
Do not infer a universal propagation time from a single test. The official guidance does not establish one delay that applies to every Xbox privacy change. If the setting still appears wrong, repeat the account and category checks before changing additional permissions.

The option is missing or the label is different
Console software revisions can change menu wording and placement. Start in Settings, then look under Account for privacy and online safety, or under Online safety & family for family and data-collection controls. Use the closest matching label rather than changing an unrelated category.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The change affected the wrong person
Sign out and identify the account shown in the guide before editing. Organizers should open Family settings > Manage family members and explicitly select the child or other member. A change to the organizer’s account is not a change to a child’s account.
The online change did not stick
Sign in again, select the intended account, make the change, and select Submit. If the old value returns, check that the browser session did not switch accounts and that you edited the intended category rather than a similar-looking setting.
A game still shares information
Optional diagnostic collection is not a universal publisher-blocking control. Review the game’s or app’s own privacy settings and the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard for the relevant account data. Microsoft may share information with a publisher when the service is used through Xbox.
A child can still use a restricted feature
Check that the restriction was applied to the child’s account, not the organizer’s account, and review both the relevant communication or multiplayer category and any game-specific controls. Family restrictions are managed by the organizer; the child cannot remove them independently.
The setting works when signed in but not when signed out
That difference can be expected because account-level and console-level contexts are separate. Review Settings > System > Console info > Allow optional data collection for the no-user-signed-in case, then separately review each account’s Data collection preference.

What to remember before changing Xbox settings
- Decide whether the problem is social visibility, communication, multiplayer, app privacy, or diagnostic collection.
- Edit the narrowest matching control instead of opening every feature to achieve one goal.
- Use the family-member selector for a child’s account.
- Use Submit on the online settings page.
- Check both account-level and signed-out console-level data settings when a household needs coverage in both contexts.
- Expect a separate game or app publisher to have its own data practices and controls.
Microsoft’s Xbox team wrote in Xbox Wire on September 15, 2020: “Trust among our users is crucial, and moving ahead, we’ll continue to listen and support your preferences on your data collection and privacy.” The practical way to apply that principle is to make a targeted choice, confirm whose account it affects, and review the service-specific settings that Xbox cannot control.
Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change Xbox privacy settings online?
Yes. Sign in to the Xbox privacy and online-safety settings page, select the account or family member, edit the needed category, and select Submit before leaving. Verify the displayed account first if multiple Microsoft accounts are open.
How can I change my child’s Xbox privacy settings?
Sign in as the family organizer, open family settings, select the child under Manage family members, and then review Xbox privacy and online-safety options. Use age-appropriate defaults or customize only the categories needed. A child cannot override organizer-imposed restrictions.
Does turning off optional diagnostics stop a game publisher from receiving data?
No. Microsoft says information may be shared with a game or app publisher when that service is used through Xbox to support, deliver, or improve it. Review the game’s or app’s own privacy controls as well as Microsoft’s settings.
Why did changing privacy settings not affect multiplayer?
Social visibility, communication, and multiplayer are separate categories. Reopen View details & customize and inspect the communication and multiplayer permissions individually. Also check whether the game has its own multiplayer or chat controls.

What does the 8 MB per day Xbox figure mean?

What should I do if the menu wording on my Xbox is different?
Software revisions can change labels and placement. Look under Account for Privacy & online safety, and under Online safety & family for family and Data collection controls. Choose the closest matching category and avoid changing an unrelated setting.
The Bottom Line
Xbox privacy works by category and context. Match the control to your goal, confirm the account or family member selected, save online changes with Submit, and remember that optional diagnostics, social permissions, family restrictions, and publisher data practices are not the same setting.
