To make a 5K monitor comfortable in Windows, open Settings > System > Display, select the 5K screen if more than one monitor is connected, and choose the scale value marked Recommended. Change the scale—not the resolution—when text, icons, and app controls are too small or too large. Keep Display resolution at its own Recommended value whenever possible so the image remains sharp.
Display scaling and resolution solve different problems
A 5K panel packs many pixels into the same physical area as a lower-resolution monitor. Windows display scaling enlarges interface elements so text, buttons, menus, and icons are easier to read. It does not reduce the monitor’s physical pixel count. Resolution determines the pixel dimensions Windows uses for the desktop; scaling determines the apparent size of interface content.

Microsoft warns that selecting a resolution below the recommended value can make the picture less sharp or cause it to appear small, centered with borders, or stretched. That is why lowering resolution is not the normal answer to tiny text on a 5K display. Use the scale control first. Check which monitor and Windows version you are using
Select the 5K monitor before changing anything
Windows stores display settings per monitor. With a laptop screen, dock, or second monitor attached, the display diagram at the top of the Display settings page may show several numbered screens. Click the rectangle that represents the 5K monitor before changing Scale or Display resolution. Otherwise, you can adjust the wrong screen and conclude that Windows ignored the change.

If you are unsure which rectangle is which, use the display-identification option in the Display settings page and match the number shown on each physical screen. The Microsoft guide How to use multiple monitors in Windows also covers arranging displays and choosing Extend or Duplicate.
Know which labels appear in your release
Windows 11 uses Scale & layout with a Scale control. Windows 10 uses the older wording Scale and layout and may show Change the size of text, apps, and other items. In both versions, start at Start > Settings > System > Display.
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The controls can still be present on an existing Windows 10 installation, but the labels and available values can vary with the build and device configuration.

- Open Start, then select Settings.
- Choose System, then Display.
- In the display diagram, select the rectangle for the 5K monitor. This step matters when more than one display is connected.
- Scroll to Scale & layout.
- Open the Scale menu and select the option marked Recommended.
- Leave Display resolution at the value marked Recommended unless you have a separate reason to change resolution.
- Read several windows and use the applications you normally use. If content is still uncomfortable, return to Scale and test another value that Windows offers.
A scale change affects the selected display. Give yourself enough time to judge normal work—documents, browser pages, settings dialogs, and menus—rather than deciding from one isolated window.
Change scaling in Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Select the 5K monitor in the display diagram if multiple screens are connected.
- Find Scale and layout.
- Under Change the size of text, apps, and other items, choose the value Windows marks Recommended.
- Check Display resolution and keep its Recommended value when possible.
- Try another available scale value only if the recommended choice does not suit your eyesight, viewing distance, or preferred workspace.
The wording differs from Windows 11, but the principle is the same: scale changes apparent size; resolution changes the desktop’s pixel dimensions.
What scale percentage should a 5K monitor use?
There is no single correct percentage for every 5K monitor. The right choice depends on the panel’s physical size, how far you sit from it, your eyesight, and whether you prioritize larger text or more simultaneous workspace. Microsoft’s support guidance says to begin with the value marked Recommended; it does not define one universal 5K percentage.

The list is evidence that Windows offers a range of choices, not a recommendation to select a particular number. Use the Recommended entry as your baseline, then move one available step at a time. At each step, ask two questions: can you read text without leaning toward the screen, and is there enough usable workspace for your normal applications?
Signs that the scale is too low
- Body text, menus, and window controls require squinting or leaning closer.
- Pointer targets and toolbar buttons are difficult to hit accurately.
- You repeatedly enlarge individual documents or browser pages just to read them.
Signs that the scale is too high
- Important controls are pushed below the fold or require excessive scrolling.
- Windows show very little content at once compared with the workspace you need.
- Large interface elements make ordinary tasks slower without improving readability.
Judge the whole desktop, not just one application. A scale that feels ideal in a browser can leave a spreadsheet, creative tool, or administration console cramped.
Use a practical test after changing the value
- Open a text-heavy window, such as a document or settings page, and check ordinary paragraph text.
- Open the applications you use most and inspect menus, toolbars, dialog boxes, and status areas.
- Move a window around the selected monitor and confirm that controls remain readable at different positions.
- Check how much content fits horizontally and vertically. If you lose needed workspace, test the next lower available scale; if reading remains difficult, test the next higher value.
- Keep the setting that balances comfortable reading with the workspace you actually use.
Do not treat a percentage as a specification that must be correct for all users. Two people with the same 5K panel can reasonably choose different values because their viewing distance and visual requirements differ.
Compare two scale settings without losing your place
When the Recommended value feels close but not quite right, compare neighboring choices methodically instead of changing several controls at once. First note the current Scale and Display resolution values. Then change only Scale by one available step and inspect the same document, browser page, settings dialog, and regularly used applications. Keeping resolution unchanged makes the comparison meaningful: any difference in apparent size comes from scaling rather than from a different pixel mode.
Pay attention to both reading comfort and usable area. A larger value may make a paragraph easier to read while reducing the number of rows visible in a spreadsheet. A smaller value may show more of a design canvas but force you to lean toward the screen. There is no score that Windows can calculate for this trade-off; your normal distance from the panel and daily tasks are the deciding tests.

Recognize resolution symptoms versus scaling symptoms

This distinction prevents a common chain of mistakes: lowering resolution to enlarge text, losing sharpness, and still having a blurry application because the real problem was its DPI handling.
When several monitors are connected
Scaling is especially important in a mixed-display setup. A 5K monitor may sit beside a laptop panel or another desktop monitor with a different pixel density. Select each display separately in the diagram and verify its scale and resolution. Windows supports arranging multiple displays and using either an extended desktop or a duplicated image; those arrangements do not eliminate the need to select the intended screen before editing its settings.
If only the 5K monitor should change, do not change the setting while another rectangle is selected. Afterward, drag a window between screens and observe whether its size changes as it crosses the boundary. A difference can be expected when displays have different scaling values, but the application itself must also handle DPI changes correctly.

In an extended desktop, each physical screen can have its own selected settings, so verify the 5K rectangle before editing it. In Duplicate mode, Windows shows the same image on more than one display, but the displays can still differ physically and in the way content appears. The display arrangement mode therefore does not replace the Scale and Display resolution controls.
Why an app can look blurry or the wrong size
Changing Windows scaling does not guarantee that every application will redraw perfectly. Microsoft notes that older desktop applications can appear blurry or incorrectly sized when they do not respond correctly to DPI changes, particularly after a window moves between monitors with different scaling settings. This is an application-compatibility issue, not proof that the 5K monitor needs a lower resolution. Microsoft describes the underlying behavior in High DPI Desktop Application Development on Windows.
Diagnose the problem in the right order
- Confirm that the correct monitor is selected in Settings > System > Display.
- Verify that the monitor’s Scale value is the one you intended and that Display resolution remains at its Recommended value.
- Move the affected application back to the monitor where it looked correct, then move it again. If the problem appears only after crossing displays, DPI handling is a likely factor.
- Compare a modern Windows application with the affected desktop program. If only the older program is blurry or incorrectly sized, the monitor-wide setting is less likely to be the cause.
- Avoid lowering resolution as an automatic fix. First determine whether the application is failing to respond to the display-scale change.
Some legacy applications may not be able to render crisply at every combination of monitor density and scale. In that case, changing the global 5K setting can make every other application less comfortable while leaving the incompatible program unchanged.

- Changing resolution to fix tiny text: resolution and scale are separate controls. Lowering resolution can reduce sharpness or create a centered, bordered, or stretched image.
- Applying the change to the wrong screen: always select the 5K monitor in the diagram first.
