Open the jaws around the workpiece, turn the adjustment screw until the handles can close firmly, then squeeze until the pliers lock. If the workpiece slips or the handles will not lock, release the pliers and adjust the screw a little at a time. There is no universal turn count: the right setting depends on the tool and the workpiece.

The goal is a fit that lets the locking mechanism engage while the jaws hold the material securely. Begin with the screw setting that allows the jaws to close around the workpiece, test the hold, and make small changes as needed. IRWIN describes the screw on its Original straight-jaw locking pliers as a way to adjust “pressure and fit”; its safety guidance says to turn the screw by hand or with a hex key only.

Adjust the pliers for a secure hold

Vice grips, also called locking pliers, are adjusted with a screw near the end of one handle. That screw changes the jaw fit and clamping pressure. The correct setting is not a fixed number of turns: it depends on the pliers and on the shape and dimensions of the workpiece. IRWIN Tools describes the screw on its Original straight-jaw model as adjusting “pressure and fit” (product information accessed October 9, 2026).

  1. Choose a stable workpiece and position the jaws. Open the pliers and place the material between the jaws where they can contact it securely. Position the tool so the jaws can sit against the workpiece rather than catching only an edge. Keep your fingers away from the jaws and handle pinch points.
  2. Set the jaw opening. Turn the adjustment screw so the jaws can close around the workpiece. Start with a fit that allows the handles to come together and the locking mechanism to engage. Adjust the screw by hand or with a hex key only; IRWIN’s safety guidance says not to tighten it with another tool.
  3. Squeeze the handles until they lock. Close the handles firmly and check that the locking mechanism engages. The workpiece should be held securely without slipping. The handles should still be closable without forcing them. If they will not close and lock, do not try to overpower them; release the pliers and make a small adjustment.
  4. Fine-tune if needed. If the handles will not close and lock, or the workpiece moves in the jaws, release the pliers and turn the screw a small increment. Try closing them again and check the hold. Repeat gradually until the fit is secure. Small changes make it easier to judge whether the adjustment improved the fit.
  5. Release the tool deliberately. Use the pliers’ release mechanism and keep your fingers clear as the jaws open. Release designs vary: IRWIN’s Fast Release 10R straight-jaw model, for example, is described as having a triggerless release. Do not assume every pair releases in the same way.

There is no manufacturer-specified number of turns or single screw setting in IRWIN’s product information and safety guidance cited here. A turn count that works on one pair of pliers or one workpiece may not suit another. Adjust and test the actual setup instead of relying on a preset count.

How to tell whether the setting is right

Use two checks together: the handles should close so the locking mechanism engages, and the jaws should hold the workpiece without slipping. If the tool will not lock, or if the material remains loose after locking, release it and adjust the screw in a small increment before trying again. Do not treat a locked handle by itself as proof of a secure hold; the workpiece also needs stable contact with the jaws.

Likewise, a secure hold does not mean that more adjustment is always better. If the jaws do not sit securely on the workpiece, consider whether the jaw shape or tool size is a poor match. Increasing pressure cannot correct a mismatch between the jaws and the material. Choose a better-fitting tool or a suitable support if the pliers cannot make stable contact.

Choose jaws that fit the workpiece

Jaw shape affects how the pliers contact the material. Match the tool to the workpiece shape and dimensions; straight and curved jaws are different configurations, not a universal better-or-worse ranking. IRWIN describes its Original straight-jaw pliers for flat, square, or hex work, while its Original 5CR curved-jaw model is described for varied shapes, including round pipe and square or hex fasteners.

Jaw style Useful for What to check
Straight jaws Flat, square, or hex-shaped work. IRWIN describes its Original straight-jaw model for these shapes. Check that the jaws can sit squarely against the workpiece rather than gripping only an edge. Compare the jaw opening and tool dimensions with the workpiece before relying on the hold.
Curved jaws Round pipe and varied shapes, including square or hex fasteners. IRWIN describes these uses for its Original 5CR curved-jaw model. Check that the curve contacts the workpiece securely and that the tool is sized appropriately. A curved profile is not automatically suitable for every round or irregular item.

For either style, a secure adjustment cannot compensate for jaws that are poorly matched to the shape or size of the workpiece. If the pliers cannot make stable contact, use a better-fitting tool or support instead of increasing force. Select by comparing the jaw shape and capacity with the actual material, rather than choosing on the assumption that one jaw style is best for every job.

What to do when the hold is not right

  • The handles will not close and lock: Release the pliers and adjust the screw in a small increment, then test the closure again. Do not force the handles shut. If the adjustment still does not allow the mechanism to engage, reconsider whether the tool fits the workpiece.
  • The workpiece slips after locking: Release the tool, make a small adjustment to the screw, and recheck that the jaws contact the work securely. Also check whether the jaw shape suits the material and whether the jaws are contacting it stably rather than only at an edge.
  • The workpiece is unstable despite adjustment: Stop and choose a suitable clamp, vise, or other support for the job. Locking pliers are not a substitute when the task requires a dedicated support.
  • The release is unfamiliar: Look for the model’s release mechanism and operate it carefully, keeping hands away from moving handles and jaws. Release designs vary. IRWIN identifies a triggerless release on its Fast Release 10R model, but this feature should not be assumed on other pliers.
  • The screw needs adjustment: Turn it by hand or with a hex key only, as IRWIN’s safety guidance directs. Make small changes, close the tool again, and check the result instead of using a universal turn count.

Safety limits to keep in mind

IRWIN’s safety guidance says, “DO NOT use on live wires. Handle grips DO NOT provide protection against electrical shock.” Locking pliers must not be used to hold energized conductors, and gloves do not make that use safe. The same guidance says to wear safety goggles, gloves, and other appropriate protective equipment (IRWIN Tools, Safety Warnings page, accessed October 9, 2026).

Inspect the tool and workpiece before clamping, keep hands clear of pinch points while closing and releasing the pliers, and do not treat a secure grip as permission to use the tool for lifting. If the job requires a clamp, vise, or other rated support, use the appropriate equipment. PPE is an added safety measure, not a reason to ignore the live-wire warning or use locking pliers outside their appropriate role.

Adjustment is a hands-on check, not a substitute for choosing the right tool or support. If the workpiece cannot be held securely with suitable jaw contact and a correctly engaged lock, stop and use another means of holding it. Avoid placing yourself in the path of a workpiece that could move if the grip fails.

Choosing a locking-pliers model

If you are selecting pliers rather than adjusting a pair you already own, start with the job’s workpiece shape and dimensions. IRWIN’s product information supports straight jaws for flat, square, or hex work and curved jaws for round pipe and varied shapes. Compare the jaws and capacity with the material you need to hold. These examples describe particular configurations; they are not a claim that one model suits every size or application.

The adjustment principle remains the same across the cited examples: set the screw for pressure and fit, close the handles until the tool locks, and verify that the workpiece does not slip. The release can differ by design; IRWIN’s Fast Release 10R is one example described as triggerless. If release action matters for a particular task, check the model’s product information rather than assuming the mechanism from another pair.

Buy a tool because its jaw type and capacity suit the task, not because a particular adjustment setting is promised. The cited manufacturer information does not establish a universal adjustment count, grip-force figure, price, or stock status. Can I use a wrench or pliers to turn the adjustment screw?

IRWIN’s safety guidance says to tighten the adjusting screw by hand or with a hex key only. Do not use another tool to turn it.

Are straight or curved jaws better?

Neither is universally better. IRWIN describes straight jaws for flat, square, or hex work and curved jaws for round pipe and varied shapes, including square or hex fasteners. Choose the shape and size that give stable contact with your workpiece.

Can I use locking pliers on live wires?

No. IRWIN warns that locking pliers must not be used on live wires and that the handle grips do not provide protection against electrical shock. Gloves do not make the use safe.

How do I release vice grips?

Use the release mechanism on the specific model and keep your fingers clear of the jaws and moving handles. Release designs vary; IRWIN describes a triggerless release on its Fast Release 10R model.

Can vice grips replace a clamp or vise?

Not when the job requires a suitable clamp, vise, or other support. If the workpiece remains unstable despite a suitable adjustment, stop and use appropriate support. Do not use locking pliers as a lifting device.

The Bottom Line

Set vice grips by matching the jaw opening to the workpiece, closing the handles until they lock, and checking that the material does not slip. Adjust the screw gradually by hand or with a hex key only; there is no universal turn count. Match straight or curved jaws to the workpiece, release carefully, and never use locking pliers on live wires or as a substitute for required support.
