Adjust a TTP223 by changing the sensing geometry or the optional Cs capacitor, then configure the TOG and AHLB options for the output behavior you need. A larger electrode or thinner cover panel generally makes the sensor more sensitive; adding Cs from the sensing node to VSS reduces sensitivity. TOG selects momentary (direct) or latching (toggle) operation, while AHLB selects active polarity in direct mode and the power-on state in toggle mode.

Those settings belong to the IC, but inexpensive breakout boards do not use a universal jumper layout. Identify the exact chip marking and inspect the board’s labels or schematic before moving a solder bridge or adding a capacitor.

What controls TTP223 sensitivity?

TTP223 sensitivity is an application-level result, not a single software setting. The chip measures changes coupled into its sensing electrode. The electrode’s size, the capacitance of its PCB connection, and the material and thickness of the panel above it all affect the signal that reaches the input.

Tontek states in the TTP223-HA6 specification that “The total loading of electrode size and capacitance of connecting line on PCB can affect the sensitivity.” In practical terms, the same IC can behave differently after you change the copper shape, route a longer trace, replace a plastic overlay, or install it in its final enclosure.

Electrode area

With the other conditions held constant, a larger sensing electrode increases sensitivity. A small electrode may work through a thin cover but fail through a thicker one; enlarging the copper area can increase the coupled touch signal. The datasheets do not specify one electrode dimension that works for every board, so treat the electrode as part of the application design rather than as a universal component value.

Cover-panel thickness and material

A thinner panel generally increases sensitivity. A thicker or less favorable overlay reduces the capacitive change seen by the electrode. Evaluate the sensor through the actual panel, adhesive, paint, and enclosure wall that will be used in the finished product. A bare-board test can give a misleading result.

Connecting-line capacitance

The PCB trace between the electrode and the IC contributes capacitance and loading. Routing, nearby copper, and the physical location of the sensor therefore matter. Keep the layout intended for production while tuning; a temporary jumper or a much longer wire can change the behavior you are trying to measure.

The optional Cs capacitor

A capacitor connected from the sensing node to VSS reduces sensitivity. Tontek’s TTP223-HA6 document gives a useful Cs range of 0–50 pF (version 1.1, 2009), while the TTP223N document gives 1–50 pF (2016). These are variant-specific useful ranges, not a guarantee that every module exposes a capacitor footprint or that one value will suit your design.

With no Cs, the HA6 specification describes sensitivity as highest. Increasing the capacitor value reduces sensitivity within the useful range. Do not assume that a generic board’s unmarked capacitor, jumper, or test pad is connected to the sensing node; verify the board schematic or continuity first.

Identify the exact TTP223 variant before changing hardware

Read the marking on the IC and obtain the matching datasheet. HA6 and TTP223N documents differ in their stated lower limit for Cs, and the TTP223N documentation also describes an open-drain output option. A board sold simply as “TTP223” may use a different package, revision, or companion circuit.

A safe, repeatable adjustment procedure

  1. Document the starting behavior. Power the board from its intended supply and test it through the final cover panel. Note whether the output is asserted only while a finger is present or remains changed after release. Also note whether the asserted state is a logic high or a logic low at the receiving circuit.
  2. Separate mode problems from sensitivity problems. If every touch is detected but the output stays on, the issue is probably the direct/toggle configuration, not electrode sensitivity. If touches are missed or false-triggered, work on the sensing geometry or Cs first.
  3. Check the electrode and cover before adding parts. For insufficient sensitivity, consider a larger electrode or a thinner cover, keeping the production panel and routing in the test. These changes affect the application directly and avoid guessing at a capacitor value.
  4. Use Cs when the sensor is too sensitive. If the board exposes the sensing node, add a small capacitor from that node to VSS. Stay within the range specified for the exact variant: 0–50 pF for the HA6 document or 1–50 pF for the TTP223N document. Start with a value appropriate to the variant and change it incrementally; the datasheets do not identify one universally correct value.
  5. Change one factor at a time. Do not enlarge the electrode, replace the cover, and add a capacitor simultaneously. A one-variable change lets you tell which adjustment corrected missed touches or false activation. This staged approach follows the manufacturer’s instruction to tune sensitivity for the actual PCB and application.
  6. Retest the complete assembly. Check the sensor with the final panel, wiring length, nearby grounded objects, and supply arrangement. Confirm both intended touches and non-touch conditions before fixing the final layout or component value.

How to choose the right sensitivity change

Use the symptom to decide which physical variable to examine first. If a deliberate finger touch is not detected through the finished panel, increasing electrode area or reducing panel thickness addresses the coupling path directly. If the sensor responds when a hand merely approaches, or triggers near a metal frame, the assembly may have more sensitivity than it can use; an appropriate Cs value can reduce that response.

These changes are not interchangeable. Enlarging copper can require a new PCB and may increase coupling to nearby conductors. A thinner panel may be a mechanical or safety constraint. A capacitor is convenient only when the sensing node and VSS are accessible and the selected part is within the variant’s specified pF range. Record the electrode revision, panel construction, trace arrangement, and capacitor value together, because changing any one of them changes the capacitive system.

Do not use the output mode as a sensitivity fix. TOG and AHLB alter how the detected event is represented; they do not compensate for a weak or noisy electrode signal. Likewise, changing Cs cannot make a momentary output latch or invert its logic level.

Configure direct (momentary) or toggle (latching) output

The TOG option selects the broad operating mode. In direct mode, the output follows touch detection: it changes state while a touch is detected and returns when the touch is removed. In toggle mode, each qualified touch changes the output and the new state remains until the next qualified touch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AHLB has a different role depending on TOG. In direct mode it selects active-high or active-low CMOS polarity. In toggle mode it selects the output’s power-on state. The following table is the TTP223-HA6 truth table; the numbers indicate configuration levels on the chip options, not necessarily the markings on a particular module.

TOG AHLB Q output behavior
0 0 Direct mode, CMOS active high
0 1 Direct mode, CMOS active low
1 0 Toggle mode, power-on state 0
1 1 Toggle mode, power-on state 1

Making the output stay on after a touch

Set TOG to the level that selects toggle mode on the identified variant. Choose AHLB according to the state you want immediately after power-up: the HA6 table specifies power-on state 0 with AHLB=0 and state 1 with AHLB=1. A subsequent touch changes the retained state.

Inverting the output

For direct mode, use AHLB to select active high or active low. Active high means the asserted touch condition is represented by a logic high; active low represents it by a logic low. If the module does not expose the option pins, you cannot assume that its LED, transistor, or header polarity reflects the chip’s selectable setting. Check the board circuit or invert the signal in the receiving electronics.

Understanding the power-on state

The AHLB setting in toggle mode determines the initial output state listed by the manufacturer. It does not make the sensor “more sensitive” and does not change the electrode response. If the output appears to start in the wrong state, inspect the toggle configuration and the board’s power-up wiring rather than changing Cs.

Chip options versus module jumpers

Many modules expose two or more solder pads with labels such as “TOG,” “AHLB,” “L/H,” or “M.” Those labels are board-specific implementations. One board may hard-wire an option, another may use a three-pad bridge, and another may omit the pin entirely.

Before soldering:

  • Use a meter to identify which pads connect to the relevant IC pin, VSS, or the supply rail.
  • Check whether a bridge selects a logic level directly or inserts a resistor network.
  • Do not move a bridge while the board is powered.
  • Do not connect an unknown pad to ground or supply merely because its silkscreen resembles a TTP223 option name.
  • After a change, verify the output level at the module header, not only the state of an onboard indicator.

If no schematic or trace information is available, the board-level mapping remains unresolved. The HA6 truth table can tell you what a chip-level configuration means, but it cannot tell you which physical jumper implements it on an unspecified module.

Output implementation and the TTP223N open-drain option

The TTP223N documentation describes an OPDO open-drain output option in addition to the usual output behavior. Open-drain and CMOS outputs are not interchangeable at the system interface: an open-drain connection normally depends on an appropriate pull-up in the receiving circuit, while a CMOS output actively drives both logic directions. Confirm the variant’s electrical diagram and the module schematic before connecting the signal to a microcontroller input, relay driver, or logic gate.

Diagnosing common adjustment problems

Symptom Most useful checks Adjustment to try
Touch is missed through the cover Confirm the panel thickness, electrode area, and trace length used in the real assembly. Use a larger electrode or thinner panel where the mechanical design permits; retest before changing Cs.
Sensor triggers without a touch Check for excessive sensitivity, nearby conductive objects, and a different layout from the final product. Add an appropriate Cs value within the variant’s specified range, changing one value at a time.
Output changes only while touching, but a latched signal is required Read the TOG configuration and verify the board’s jumper mapping. Select toggle mode at the chip option, then choose the required power-on state with AHLB.
Output polarity is opposite to the controller’s expectation Determine whether the signal is active high or active low at the actual output pin. In direct mode, select the opposite AHLB level, or invert it in the receiving circuit.
Changing a jumper has no effect Check whether the pad is connected to the IC, whether the module hard-wires the option, and whether the chip variant matches the datasheet. Stop applying guesses; obtain the board schematic or trace the connection before another modification.
Added capacitor produces little or no change Verify that the capacitor reaches the sensing node and VSS, and that its value is in the correct pF range. Correct the connection or use a value allowed for the exact variant. A capacitor on an unrelated pad will not tune sensitivity.

These figures are datasheet specifications, not independently measured operating distances. Neither document establishes one universal touch range, electrode size, cover thickness, or capacitor value for every assembly.

Limits you should design around

  • There is no guaranteed touch distance that applies to every TTP223 board.
  • A stated 0–50 pF or 1–50 pF range does not mean every intermediate value will be optimal in your enclosure.
  • The datasheets describe directional effects—larger electrode and thinner panel increase sensitivity; added Cs decreases it—but do not provide a universal mechanical recipe.
  • Module silkscreens and solder bridges are not standardized. The exact board revision controls which options are available.
  • Final acceptance should use the production panel, wiring, grounding, and enclosure, because those are part of the capacitive system.

A concise decision path

  1. If the sensor is too insensitive, first review electrode size, cover thickness, and connecting-line layout.
  2. If it is too sensitive, add or increase Cs from the sensing node to VSS within the exact variant’s range.
  3. If the timing is wrong—momentary versus latching—change TOG, not the sensitivity components.
  4. If the logic level is wrong, change AHLB in direct mode or invert the signal at the receiver.
  5. If the board does not expose the required pads, do not assume a universal jumper position; identify the schematic or redesign the interface around the pins that are actually available.

For a reliable result, tune the sensor as a complete assembly and keep the chip variant, option levels, capacitor value, cover construction, and final output polarity documented with the board revision.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I make a TTP223 less sensitive?

First confirm that the false triggering is present in the finished enclosure, not just on a temporary bench setup. If the exact variant and board expose the sensing node, add or increase a Cs capacitor from that node to VSS. Use the range for the identified chip: the TTP223-HA6 specification lists 0–50 pF, while TTP223N documentation lists 1–50 pF. Change one value at a time and retest through the final panel.

How can I make a TTP223 more sensitive?

A larger sensing electrode and a thinner cover panel generally increase sensitivity when other conditions stay the same. Check the production electrode, overlay, adhesive and trace routing before adding components. The datasheets do not define one universal electrode size or cover thickness, so the correct result must be established on the actual assembly.

How do I make the TTP223 output stay on after a touch?

Configure TOG for toggle mode on the exact chip variant. Each qualified touch then changes the output and the state remains until the next qualified touch. In the HA6 table, AHLB=0 gives power-on state 0 and AHLB=1 gives power-on state 1 in toggle mode. Verify how the module’s pads implement those chip levels.

How do I invert a TTP223 output?

In direct mode, use AHLB to choose CMOS active-high or active-low behavior. Active high asserts with a high logic level; active low asserts with a low level. If the board does not expose the option pin, inspect its schematic or invert the signal in the receiving circuit rather than guessing from an LED or header label.

Why did adding a capacitor not change sensitivity?

The part may be connected to the wrong pad, may not be connected to VSS, or may be outside the useful range for the chip variant. A generic module may not expose the sensing node at all. Trace the pad to the IC or consult the board schematic, then confirm the capacitor value in pF before trying another change.

Can I use the HA6 TOG/AHLB table for every TTP223 module?

Use it as the chip-level reference for the TTP223-HA6 variant, not as a universal jumper map. Retail modules can hard-wire options, use different bridges, omit pins or carry another TTP223 variant. Identify the IC marking and verify which board pads connect to TOG, AHLB, VSS and supply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the TTP223N open-drain option mean my breakout needs a pull-up?

Only if that particular chip and board actually configure the output as open-drain. TTP223N documentation describes an OPDO option, but a low-cost module may omit it or hard-wire a different output implementation. Check the variant’s electrical diagram and board schematic; an open-drain connection normally requires a suitable pull-up, unlike a CMOS output that actively drives both logic states.

The Bottom Line

Tune TTP223 sensitivity with the electrode, cover and variant-specific Cs connection; configure behavior separately with TOG and AHLB. Because module jumpers are not standardized, verify the chip marking and board wiring, then validate the final settings through the complete production assembly.
