On a Galaxy Z Fold, open Settings > Display > Screen timeout and choose how long the active screen should remain on. To control wake behavior on the Galaxy Z Fold6, use Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures for Lift to wake and Double tap to turn on screen. The Fold6’s Always On Display controls are under Settings > Lock screen and AOD > Always On Display. Menu names and available choices can differ by Fold model, carrier and software version.
What each screen setting controls
Three related settings are easy to confuse:

Changing one does not automatically change the others. For example, extending the timeout does not disable Lift to wake, and turning on AOD does not keep the full active display illuminated.
Think of the settings as separate stages. Screen timeout governs the active interface while you are using an app. Once that display turns off, AOD may show limited information, depending on its own schedule. Wake gestures determine what happens when the phone is dark and you pick it up or tap it. This separation makes troubleshooting easier: a display that goes dark too soon points to timeout or viewing detection, while a display that lights by itself points to a gesture, notification, accessory or app.

Change the screen timeout
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Tap Screen timeout.
- Select the duration you want.
Samsung’s support guidance describes Galaxy screen-timeout choices ranging from 15 seconds to 10 minutes. A Samsung UK guide updated 20 January 2022 identifies 15 seconds as the default and 10 minutes as the maximum on the devices covered by that guide. Your Fold may show a different default or selection list because the model, software version, region or carrier can change the menu.

The setting applies after you stop interacting with the active screen. It is not a limit on how long the phone can remain powered on, and it does not turn off the device. A tap, swipe or other interaction starts the countdown again. If you lock the phone manually with the side button, that action overrides the remaining timeout period.
Choosing a practical duration
- 15 or 30 seconds: Best for conserving battery when you frequently put the phone down.
- 1 to 2 minutes: A useful compromise for reading short messages or checking an app without leaving the display on for long.
- 5 to 10 minutes: More convenient for recipes, documents, maps or other content that you read without touching the screen, but it can consume more battery if you forget to lock the phone.
Samsung states that longer screen durations use more battery. The tradeoff is convenience versus the time the active display remains lit. A longer value does not make the battery larger or improve charging; it simply delays the point at which the display turns off. If you need extra reading time only occasionally, Keep screen on while viewing is usually a more targeted solution than leaving a 10-minute timeout enabled all day.
Keep the display on while you are reading
If the screen turns off while you are looking at a page, try Keep screen on while viewing instead of setting a very long timeout.

- Use the Settings search field and enter Keep screen on while viewing. On supported software, you can also look under Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures.
- Turn the setting on.
The feature is designed to prevent a timeout while the phone detects that you are viewing the screen. Availability depends on the Fold model and software. It may not work reliably if the front camera is covered, the phone is positioned so it cannot detect your face, or lighting and viewing angle make detection difficult. If you do not see the option, use the shorter Screen timeout choices that your phone provides rather than assuming the feature is supported.
This option is useful for recipes, books, documents and maps because it responds to viewing rather than forcing every session to use the longest timer. It is not a replacement for Screen timeout: when you are no longer viewing the phone, the normal timeout behavior still matters. Test it in the position in which you normally read, since detection can vary with the phone flat on a surface, held in one hand or partially folded.
Choose how the screen wakes on a Galaxy Z Fold6
On the Galaxy Z Fold6, Samsung lists two relevant wake gestures in Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures.
Lift to wake
- Open Settings.
- Tap Advanced features.
- Tap Motions and gestures.
- Turn Lift to wake on or off.
When enabled, the screen turns on when you pick up the phone. Disable it if the display lights whenever you move the Fold and you would rather wake it manually with the side button or another enabled gesture. If you carry the phone in a bag or pocket, movement can make this setting appear to be an unwanted notification or random wake-up.

- Open Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures.
- Turn Double tap to turn on screen on or off.
With this option enabled, tapping the screen twice while it is off wakes it. If accidental touches in a pocket, bag or folded state wake the phone, switch this option off and review Lift to wake as well. A single tap is not the documented trigger for this control, so test with two deliberate taps on the inactive screen.

These controls affect waking only. They do not extend Screen timeout, change the lock-screen security timer or determine whether AOD is visible. On earlier or later Fold generations, the same features may be named differently or may not be offered, so use Settings search when the Fold6 path does not match.
Configure Always On Display on the Fold6
- Open Settings.
- Tap Lock screen and AOD.
- Tap Always On Display.
- Choose the display behavior and any available appearance options.
Always On Display is separate from Screen timeout. Screen timeout turns off the active interface; AOD can then show limited information while the main display is off. Samsung documents these When to show choices on the Fold6:

The exact list, wording and additional AOD controls can vary by model and software. If your Fold does not show Lock screen and AOD, search Settings for Always On Display.

Choose the AOD timing according to how you check the phone. Tap to show limits persistent display activity but requires a touch. Always is convenient for at-a-glance information but leaves AOD available continuously and can use more battery than a tap or schedule choice. As scheduled is useful when you want AOD during defined hours, while For new notifications focuses it on alerts. None of these choices changes the active-display timeout.
Stop the screen from waking unexpectedly
Unexpected wake-ups usually come from a gesture, a notification, physical pressure or an app rather than from Screen timeout itself. Check the causes in this order.
1. Review wake gestures
Open Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures and test Lift to wake and Double tap to turn on screen. Turn off either feature that matches the behavior you are seeing. A Fold generation other than the Fold6 may use different labels or expose fewer controls.
2. Check the buttons and case
Make sure a case, hinge section, wallet insert or another object is not pressing the side or volume buttons. Remove the case briefly and observe whether the wake-ups stop. This test distinguishes physical pressure from a software setting without changing other phone configurations.

Notifications can illuminate the lock screen or interact with AOD. Check the notification settings for apps that alert immediately before the screen wakes. If the behavior is tied to a particular app, adjust that app’s notification categories rather than changing the global timeout.

4. Test for a third-party app
Samsung recommends testing in Safe mode when a third-party app may be responsible. Safe mode starts the phone with downloaded apps disabled. If the unwanted wake-ups stop in Safe mode, remove or update recently installed apps one at a time after returning to normal operation. If they continue, the cause is more likely a system setting, accessory or hardware condition.
5. Consider the charger and charging setup
Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance notes that some third-party wireless chargers can cause unexpected wake-ups and recommends Samsung-approved chargers. This is a troubleshooting check, not a requirement for changing timeout or wake settings. Test the phone away from the wireless charger or with a known-compatible charging setup before changing more settings.
If the screen turns off while you are using it
Increase Screen timeout
Go to Settings > Display > Screen timeout and select a longer value. Remember that Samsung associates longer durations with greater battery use.
Enable Keep screen on while viewing
Search Settings for Keep screen on while viewing and enable it if your model offers it. This is generally preferable to a 10-minute timeout when the problem occurs mainly during reading.
Check whether the phone is actually locking
Screen timeout controls when the display turns off; it does not by itself determine every lock-screen security timer. If the display goes dark and immediately requires authentication, review your lock-screen and security settings separately. Do not assume changing timeout will alter those security policies.
Check both Fold displays separately
A Fold can be used folded or unfolded, but the timeout control is a device-level display setting rather than a separate timer that you set for each screen. Test the behavior in the posture in which the problem occurs, then adjust the single Screen timeout value or enable viewing detection if available.
If the screen will not wake as expected
- Press the side button once to distinguish a gesture problem from a display or power problem.
- Confirm that Double tap to turn on screen is enabled if you rely on tapping rather than the button.
- Pick up the device normally if you use Lift to wake; the gesture may not trigger when the phone is stationary on a surface.
- Check whether a case, screen protector or folded position is interfering with your tap or covering a sensor.
- Use Settings search for the feature name if the documented path is different on your model.
If the side button also fails to wake the phone, the symptom is no longer limited to a wake-gesture preference. Follow Samsung’s device-specific support or service guidance rather than repeatedly changing timeout values.
When the menu labels do not match
Samsung cautions that settings vary by model, software version and carrier. On some Fold models, the display menu may use Screen layout and zoom instead of Screen zoom; that naming difference does not change where Screen timeout is normally found.

Use the Settings search field with these exact terms:
- Screen timeout
- Always On Display
- Motions and gestures
- Keep screen on while viewing
- Auto screen on and off
Search is especially useful after a major software update or on a carrier-customized build. A result may appear even when Samsung’s menu path is different from the one in a Fold6 guide. If a search result is absent, that usually means the feature is unavailable on that model or software build rather than that another timer is hiding it.
Cases and automatic screen behavior
Samsung documents an Auto screen on and off setting under Settings > Advanced features > Accessories for certain cases and accessories. The option appears only when the phone detects a compatible accessory, so it may not be visible on a bare phone or with another case. This setting governs accessory-triggered screen behavior and is separate from the regular Screen timeout, wake gestures and AOD choices.

Removing the case temporarily is a simple way to isolate accessory behavior.
A battery-conscious setup
For a balance between convenience and battery life, start with a 30-second or 1-minute Screen timeout, enable Keep screen on while viewing if your Fold supports it, and disable Lift to wake or Double tap to turn on screen if they cause accidental wake-ups. For AOD, choose Tap to show, As scheduled or For new notifications instead of Always when you want less persistent display activity. These choices are preferences, not requirements; select the combination that matches how you read, carry and check the phone.
When comparing two setups, change one control at a time and observe the result for a day. For example, keep a one-minute timeout while testing Lift to wake, then test AOD separately. This avoids mistaking a notification-triggered AOD appearance for a timeout failure. If battery use is the concern, shorten the active timeout first, then reduce persistent AOD showing, while retaining the wake method you actually use.

Why does my Fold wake when I pick it up?
Lift to wake is likely enabled. On a Fold6, open Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures and turn off Lift to wake. Also check Double tap to turn on screen, notifications, case pressure and third-party apps if wake-ups continue.
How do I stop a double tap from waking the screen?
On the Fold6, go to Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures and disable Double tap to turn on screen. If the phone still wakes, test with the case removed and review Lift to wake and notification settings.
What is the difference between Screen timeout and Always On Display?
Screen timeout turns off the active interface after you stop interacting. Always On Display can then show limited information such as time and date while the main display is off. AOD has its own choices, including Tap to show, Auto, Always, As scheduled and For new notifications on the Fold6.

Can I keep the screen on while reading without choosing 10 minutes?
If your model supports it, enable Keep screen on while viewing through Settings search or Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures. The phone attempts to keep the display on while it detects that you are looking at it.
Why can’t I find Always On Display or Motions and gestures?
Samsung says menu names and availability vary by model, software version and carrier. Search Settings for Always On Display, Motions and gestures or Screen timeout. A Fold-specific display label such as Screen layout and zoom may also differ without affecting the timeout location.
Can a case or charger make the screen wake?
A case can press a button or activate Samsung’s Auto screen on and off option when a compatible accessory is detected. Samsung also notes that some third-party wireless chargers can cause unexpected wake-ups and recommends Samsung-approved chargers. Remove the case or test away from the charger to isolate the cause.
