You can tune a Razer headset in Synapse, but the exact controls depend on the headset model and whether you use Synapse 3 or Synapse 4. For a supported Windows headset, select the Razer device as your playback output, keep Windows Spatial sound set to Off, then enable THX Spatial Audio and choose an EQ profile in Synapse. Mic Monitoring (Sidetone) is a separate control: turn it down or off when you hear your own voice in the earcups.
Identify your headset and Synapse version first
Read the model name on the headset, its USB controller, or the label in Windows before changing anything. Razer does not provide the same sound, microphone, or spatial-audio options for every headset. THX Spatial Audio is available only on supported models, and some older devices expose a Game playback endpoint rather than a generic headset name.
Also check which Synapse application is installed. Razer says Synapse 3 stopped receiving updates and cloud-service support on February 3, 2026. Devices that remain installed can still be configurable in Synapse 3, but a device that is completely uninstalled requires Synapse 4 for continued customization. Menu names therefore can differ even when the headset is the same.
- Synapse 4: headset controls are normally under the Razer Device tab, with microphone controls on Mic and sound controls on Sound.
- Synapse 3: microphone monitoring is under Audio > Mic; EQ and THX controls for the listed headset families were moved to the Sound tab.
- Windows: the playback device you select here must match the endpoint used by your game or voice-chat application.
If a control described below is missing, do not assume it is hidden. Confirm the exact model, connection mode, Synapse version, and whether the headset supports that feature.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Before changing anything: make a clean baseline
Test the headset once with its current settings before making several changes. Play a familiar game clip, music track, or film scene at a comfortable volume, and make a short microphone recording in the application you actually use. This gives you a reference when you compare an EQ preset, THX processing, or a sidetone adjustment.
Change one category at a time. EQ changes the tonal balance; THX changes spatial processing; sidetone changes only how much of your own microphone signal returns to the earcups. Windows and application input selections are separate again. Keeping those functions distinct makes it easier to identify which setting solved a problem and prevents a louder monitoring signal from being mistaken for a stronger transmitted microphone signal.
Adjust sound and EQ in Synapse
Open the headset sound page
- Connect the headset and let Synapse detect it.
- Select the headset in Synapse.
- Open Sound (or the equivalent audio page shown for your version).
- Choose an EQ profile, then play familiar audio while making small changes.
Razer’s supported-headset instructions list Game, Movie, Music, and Custom choices. Presets are starting points, not measurements of a universally correct sound. Use Custom when you want to alter individual frequency bands, and compare changes at a comfortable listening level so louder playback does not make a profile seem better merely because it is louder.
What the profiles are for
| Profile | Useful starting point | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Game | Games where effects and positional cues need emphasis | A preset chosen by Razer; exact frequency boosts vary by model. |
| Movie | Film and television | A preset for cinematic playback; it is not a guarantee of dialogue clarity on every headset. |
| Music | Music listening | A preset intended for music; the result depends on the recording and headset. |
| Custom | Personal hearing preferences or a particular game | You adjust the available EQ bands yourself; Razer does not specify one best curve. |
There is no evidence-based universal EQ curve for all Razer headsets. Start flat or with the closest built-in preset, move one or two bands at a time, and switch back to the original profile if a change makes speech harsh, bass muddy, or effects fatiguing. A preset that sounds exciting for a short game session may be tiring for a long one, so judge it over the way you normally listen rather than by a quick volume impression.
Model-specific preset switching
The BlackShark V3 is a concrete example of a model-specific control. Razer’s support FAQ identifies it as Synapse 4-supported with THX Spatial Audio integrated in Synapse. Its SmartSwitch button cycles onboard presets labeled Default, Game, Movie, Music, and Esports 1. That physical shortcut does not establish that every Razer headset has the same button or preset list; use the controls documented for your model.
If a button or preset mentioned in an online guide is absent, do not substitute a different model’s instructions. Check whether the guide describes a BlackShark V3, a Nari-family device, a Kraken Tournament Edition, or another headset, and whether it assumes Synapse 3 or Synapse 4. Model-specific names are useful clues, not universal specifications.

Stop hearing your own voice (Mic Monitoring or Sidetone)
If your speech is fed back into the earcups, the setting to change is Mic Monitoring, also called Sidetone. It is a monitoring level, not the microphone’s recording gain and not the input device chosen by a game or chat application.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Synapse 4 path
- Open Synapse 4 and select the headset under Razer Device.
- Open Mic.
- Find Mic Monitoring (Sidetone).
- Switch it off, or lower the level until your voice is no longer distracting.
Synapse 3 path
- Open Synapse 3 and select the headset.
- Open Audio, then Mic.
- Turn Mic Monitoring (Sidetone) off or reduce its level.
After changing sidetone, make a short call or recording. If other people still hear you too quietly, loudly, or with distortion, adjust the input device and level in the specific game or communication app and in Windows. Razer’s published instructions do not define one input-level procedure that applies to every headset, Windows release, and application.
Sidetone can be useful when you need awareness of your speaking volume, but it is optional. Turning it off does not mute the microphone for other people; it only stops the local monitor return. Conversely, raising sidetone does not increase the level being sent to a call. Use the app’s microphone controls for that job.
Enable THX Spatial Audio on a supported Windows headset
THX processing is not a universal Razer-headset feature, and the documented setup is Windows-specific. Confirm support for your exact model before looking for the toggle.
Razer’s setup sequence
- Confirm compatibility. Check the headset’s Razer support page for THX Spatial Audio support.
- Select the output. In Windows sound settings, make the Razer headset the default playback device. For some older models, including devices in the Nari family and the Kraken Tournament Edition, choose the headset’s Game endpoint.
- Check device properties. Open the selected playback device’s properties. Razer’s instructions say to ensure enhancements have not been disabled.
- Turn Windows Spatial sound off. Set Windows Spatial sound to Off for this setup.
- Enable THX in Synapse. Open Synapse, select the headset, go to Sound, and switch to THX Spatial Audio.
- Choose an EQ profile. Select Game, Movie, Music, or Custom and adjust bands if needed.
Razer explains that THX Spatial Audio is embedded in the sound output device, so it will not appear as an option under Windows’ Spatial sound menu. Enable or disable it in Synapse instead of searching for a separate Windows spatial-sound entry.
Bundled THX device versus standalone application
Razer’s playback-device guide distinguishes THX Spatial – Razer Synapse, which is added when a THX Spatial-enabled headset is detected, from the separately acquired standalone THX Spatial Audio application. A headset that includes the Synapse-integrated feature does not imply that every model receives the standalone application’s controls, and installing an additional spatial-audio layer can create competing processing. Use the software path documented for your model.

Prevent double processing and wrong-device playback
Spatial audio can sound hollow, phasey, or unusually distant when more than one processor is active. For the Razer-documented THX arrangement, keep Windows Spatial sound off and let Synapse provide THX processing. Then verify that the game or chat application is using the same Razer playback endpoint selected as the Windows default.
- If Windows is sending audio to speakers, a monitor, or another headset, Synapse changes will not affect what you hear.
- If an older headset exposes both Chat and Game endpoints, use the endpoint Razer specifies for that model’s spatial-audio setup; the Tournament Edition, for example, uses its USB Audio Controller for Synapse-detected audio commands.
- If a game has its own surround or spatial mode, test it separately. Do not enable every available surround option at once.
When testing, switch only one spatial processor on at a time and use the same audio scene for comparison. If the sound becomes less clear after enabling THX, first confirm the endpoint and Windows Spatial sound setting before changing the EQ. A wrong output device can make a correct Synapse configuration appear ineffective.
Microphone troubleshooting beyond sidetone
Sidetone only determines whether your own microphone signal is returned to your earcups. It does not repair a wrong input device, a muted microphone, excessive gain, clipping, or application-specific processing.

When others cannot hear you
- In the voice-chat or game audio menu, select the Razer microphone or the input endpoint associated with the headset.
- Check that the application is not muted and that its input threshold or push-to-talk setting allows your voice through.
- Confirm the physical microphone is fully extended or connected if your model uses a detachable boom.
- Make a short test recording in the application. If the recording is clean but the call is not, the problem is likely the app’s input selection or processing rather than sidetone.
When your voice is too loud, quiet, or distorted
- Lower the application’s input gain if speech clips; increase it gradually if the waveform is barely registering.
- Move the microphone consistently near the corner of your mouth rather than directly in front of it, then retest.
- Disable duplicate noise suppression or automatic gain controls one at a time when they produce pumping or clipped syllables.
- Keep the Synapse sidetone level separate from recording gain so you do not mistake a louder monitor return for a louder transmitted signal.
Because Windows versions and communication applications expose different labels, use the exact app’s input settings and the support page for your headset when these checks do not resolve the problem. There is no single microphone-gain value that Razer documents as correct for every headset, room, voice, and application.
Synapse 3 and Synapse 4 changes that affect the walkthrough
Razer’s UI guidance for headset families from 2020–2022 places EQ and the THX toggle in the Sound tab. If an older guide tells you to look elsewhere, first check whether it describes Synapse 3, Synapse 4, or an earlier interface.
The February 3, 2026 Synapse 3 service change matters when reinstalling Windows or replacing software. An already installed headset may continue to be configurable in Synapse 3, but removing the device completely means Synapse 4 is required for continued customization. Back up or note your preferred EQ settings before uninstalling software; a profile that exists only in an old installation may not reappear automatically.

Razer’s wording is important here: “Effective February 3, 2026, Razer Synapse 3 will no longer receive updates or support cloud services.” This does not mean every existing installation stops working immediately; it means support, updates, and cloud functionality should not be expected from Synapse 3 after that date. Plan a Synapse 4 transition when your model is supported, especially after a clean uninstall.
Model notes: BlackShark V3 and Kraken Tournament Edition
BlackShark V3
Razer lists the BlackShark V3 as Synapse 4-supported and documents THX Spatial Audio integrated in Synapse. Its SmartSwitch button cycles the five named EQ presets. Treat those labels as shortcuts for this model, not as a specification shared by the entire product line. Confirm the connection mode and platform requirements on the model’s support page before relying on a particular endpoint.
Kraken Tournament Edition
The Kraken Tournament Edition uses a USB Audio Controller that Synapse detects for its audio-command features. Razer documents volume, bass, and game/chat controls on that controller, along with THX Spatial Audio for the headset. This controller is a model-specific replacement path for Tournament Edition owners, not a general-purpose controller for other Razer headsets. If you are buying a replacement, verify that it is specifically compatible with the Tournament Edition rather than assuming any Razer USB controller will work.
These examples also show why a product recommendation needs context. The BlackShark V3’s integrated THX and onboard preset button matter only if that model, its connection mode, and your platform meet your needs. The Tournament Edition controller is relevant to owners of that headset, not a general upgrade for unrelated Razer devices. Check the current model support page and listing before spending money; availability, price, and partner terms can change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A quick verification checklist
- Write down the exact headset model and whether Synapse 3 or 4 is installed.
- Set the correct Razer playback endpoint as the Windows default; use Game where Razer specifies it.
- For THX setup, confirm the model supports THX, leave Windows Spatial sound Off, and enable THX in Synapse’s Sound tab.
- Choose an EQ preset, then make small Custom adjustments while listening at a comfortable volume.
- If you hear yourself, change Mic Monitoring (Sidetone) under Razer Device > Mic in Synapse 4 or Audio > Mic in Synapse 3.
- Test the microphone in the actual game or chat application and select its input device independently from sidetone.
- If a control is absent, re-check model compatibility and Synapse version instead of applying settings from a different headset.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is THX Spatial Audio missing from Windows Spatial sound?
Razer embeds THX Spatial Audio in the supported headset’s output device, so it may not appear as a Windows Spatial sound option. Set Windows Spatial sound to Off and enable THX in Synapse’s Sound tab after selecting the correct Razer playback endpoint.

Can every Razer headset use THX Spatial Audio?
No. THX Spatial Audio is model-dependent. Check the exact headset’s Razer support page before following the THX setup; do not assume that a control shown for one family exists on another.

Should I select Chat or Game as my Razer output?
Use the endpoint specified for your model’s setup. Some older devices, including Nari-family models and the Kraken Tournament Edition, use a Game endpoint for the documented THX arrangement. Your game and chat application should use the same intended endpoint.
How do I stop hearing my own voice?
Turn down or disable Mic Monitoring, also called Sidetone. In Synapse 4, open Razer Device, then Mic. In Synapse 3, open Audio, then Mic. This changes local monitoring only; it does not change the microphone level sent to other people.
What is the best Razer EQ setting?
There is no universal best profile. Razer lists Game, Movie, Music, and Custom presets for supported headsets. Start with a preset or a flat/default profile, make small changes, and compare at a comfortable, consistent volume.
Why do my Synapse menus not match this guide?
Menu locations vary by model and Synapse version. Razer moved EQ and THX controls into the Sound tab for the referenced headset families. Confirm the exact model, connection mode, and whether you are using Synapse 3 or Synapse 4.
Does turning off sidetone mute my microphone?
No. Sidetone controls whether your own microphone signal is fed back into your earcups. The input device, mute state, gain, and processing used by a game or voice-chat application are separate settings.
Can I keep using Synapse 3?
Razer says Synapse 3 stopped receiving updates and cloud-service support on February 3, 2026. An installed device may remain configurable, but a completely uninstalled device requires Synapse 4 for continued customization.
The Bottom Line
Use Synapse for the settings your model supports: EQ and THX under Sound, and sidetone under Mic. On Windows, select the correct Razer playback endpoint and keep Windows Spatial sound off when using Razer’s THX setup. Treat microphone input levels and app device selection as separate controls, and verify every menu against your headset model and Synapse version.
