To track distance while Pokémon GO is closed, turn on Adventure Sync at Main Menu > Settings > General > Adventure Sync, allow the app to use your location at all times, and connect Apple Health or Google Fit. For battery troubleshooting, distinguish Pokémon GO’s display-dimming Battery Saver from your phone’s system battery-saving mode: Niantic says the in-game option does not affect Adventure Sync distance, while device or fitness-app power saving can interfere. Notification controls are less clearly documented, so use the game’s current Settings and your phone’s app notification controls rather than relying on a universal menu path.
Turn on Adventure Sync to track distance while the game is closed
Adventure Sync is Pokémon GO’s optional background distance-tracking mode. Niantic says it can record kilometers when the app is not open, supporting Buddy Candy and Egg hatching. It is available to Trainers at Level 5 and above, and requires location permission plus a connection to Apple Health or Google Fit. See Niantic’s Adventure Sync help page for the feature overview.
- Open Pokémon GO and tap Main Menu.
- Tap Settings, then General.
- Tap Adventure Sync and follow the in-game prompts to enable it and connect the fitness service offered for your device.
- When prompted, grant the requested permissions. For background tracking, location access must allow the app to access location while it is closed; the required setting is described below.
The precise prompts for connecting a fitness service can vary by device and operating-system version. A compatible Android device is required for the Google Fit pathway. If the option is unavailable, first check that the Trainer account is at least Level 5.
Adventure Sync is specifically for recording distance when the game is not open; it is not a promise that every fitness entry will be counted immediately. The fitness-service connection is part of the setup, as is background location access. If you use multiple fitness apps or have changed phones, verify the service connection and permissions shown for the account and device you are currently using rather than assuming an old setup carries over unchanged.

Set location permission for background tracking
Adventure Sync needs location access set to Always or its equivalent so Pokémon GO can use location when the app is closed. Niantic’s instructions are general, and labels and menu placement can differ across OS versions and Android manufacturers. Its Adventure Sync troubleshooting guide gives these paths; its app-permissions guide also notes that device instructions may vary.
Android
- Open the phone’s Settings.
- Go to Apps > Pokémon GO > Permissions. On some devices, the list may be labeled or arranged differently.
- Open Location and choose the option that allows access all the time, if your Android version offers it.
- Confirm that the phone’s device-level Location setting is on.
There are two related checks here: Pokémon GO’s app-specific Location permission and the phone’s overall Location setting. An app permission alone does not replace the device-level check. If your manufacturer uses another menu layout, open Pokémon GO’s entry in the phone’s app settings and look for its permissions, then check the device’s Location control separately.
iPhone or iPad
- Open the device’s Settings.
- Go to Privacy > Location Services > Pokémon GO. Niantic’s current troubleshooting article gives this path; on newer or different OS versions, the Pokémon GO entry may instead appear under Settings > Apps > Pokémon GO.
- Open the location permission options and select Always, if available.
If Pokémon GO asks you to enable location every time you open it on iOS, review the app’s location permission in device Settings and make sure it is set to Always rather than an option limited to app use. Apple’s menu labels can change between OS versions, so look for Pokémon GO’s Location permission if the path differs. Niantic lists this recurring prompt as a specific Adventure Sync troubleshooting issue.
Do not assume that allowing location only while Pokémon GO is in use is sufficient for distance recording after closing the app. The purpose of the Always permission is to let the app access location in the background. If the available options or wording differ on your device, use the permission that allows ongoing background access rather than relying on a menu name from another OS release.
Adjust notifications without relying on an outdated menu path
Niantic documents an optional Adventure Sync push alert for when a Buddy finds Candy or an Egg is close to hatching. The support information does not establish a current, exact cross-platform path for general Pokémon GO notification controls or the phone’s notification menus. Because those controls can move or use different labels, avoid assuming that a path shown for another OS version applies to your device.

- For alerts associated with Adventure Sync, open Pokémon GO’s current Settings and review the Adventure Sync options. The feature and its optional alerts are described on Niantic’s Adventure Sync page.
- For broader alerts, check Pokémon GO’s settings and the phone’s app notification controls. On the phone, search Settings for Notifications or Pokémon GO if you do not see the app’s notification entry where expected.
- If alerts are missing, check both places: an app-level option and a phone-level permission may each affect whether a notification can appear. The exact labels and available controls depend on the current game and OS versions.
The support guidance establishes that Buddy Candy and near-hatch alerts can be offered, but it does not specify every notification type, a universal toggle, or exact current Android and iOS paths. For that reason, use the labels visible on your device rather than following a presumed menu sequence.
When checking a missing alert, distinguish between the alert being offered by the game and the phone being permitted to display it. Start in the current Pokémon GO Settings and review any relevant Adventure Sync options; then inspect Pokémon GO’s notification controls in the phone Settings. If you are looking for a different type of alert, do not assume it uses the same control as Buddy Candy or an Egg nearing hatch. Niantic’s published guidance confirms those two examples but does not establish a complete list or a single universal switch.

Understand the two Battery Saver settings
Pokémon GO has its own Battery Saver toggle, separate from the phone’s system battery-saving mode. They do different things, and this distinction matters when diagnosing missing distance.

Find the in-game Battery Saver toggle
Open Pokémon GO’s Settings and look for the Battery Saver toggle. Niantic describes it as a setting in the game’s Settings menu; the cited guidance does not specify a deeper submenu path. With the feature enabled, point the device downward to switch off the display. This is a display behavior, not the phone’s system-wide power mode.

Niantic’s description is specific about what happens: the display is disabled while the device is pointed downward, and the game continues tracking distance as if the display were on. If Vibration is enabled, the phone can still vibrate for nearby Pokémon. That makes this setting different from a phone-wide battery mode that may affect the sensors or background activity Adventure Sync needs.
If your goal is to keep the screen from dimming or turning off when you angle the device down, adjust the in-game toggle. If your goal is to fix missing background distance, the toggle is not the first one to turn off: Niantic says Pokémon GO’s Battery Saver does not interfere with Adventure Sync. Focus on system and fitness-service battery saving instead.
Troubleshoot distance that is missing, delayed, or incomplete
If Adventure Sync is not recording fitness progress, or credits only part of the distance walked, check the tracking chain in order: permissions, fitness-service connection, device capabilities and power-saving behavior, then allow time for syncing. Niantic cautions that synchronization can take several hours, so a short delay alone does not establish that tracking has failed.
- Confirm Adventure Sync is enabled. In Pokémon GO, go to Main Menu > Settings > General > Adventure Sync. If the option is not available, check that the Trainer is Level 5 or above.
- Check location access. Follow the Android or iOS location steps above and confirm access is set to Always or its equivalent, rather than only while the game is open. On Android, also confirm device Location is on.
- Check the fitness-service connection. Adventure Sync requires a connection to Apple Health or Google Fit. Review the connection and permissions for the service configured on your device. The Google Fit route requires a compatible Android device.
- Temporarily disable system and fitness-app power saving. Turn off the phone’s battery-saving mode and any battery-saving mode in Apple Health or Google Fit while testing. These modes can affect sensors or background syncing. You do not need to disable Pokémon GO’s own Battery Saver to test this issue.
- Wait for the sync. Niantic says it may take several hours for distance to sync. Check again after that interval before changing multiple settings at once.
- Use tracked activity, not manually entered data. Manually entered fitness data does not count toward Adventure Sync, according to Niantic’s troubleshooting guidance.
Niantic’s support article identifies the central issue as “Adventure Sync isn’t tracking my fitness progress” and also addresses partial distance credit. It does not provide a guaranteed immediate refresh method or promise that every fitness-service record will be credited.
Why steps or walks may not appear as expected
Adventure Sync depends on more than the game’s own Battery Saver switch. Background location access must be allowed, the fitness service must be connected, and the device must have the sensors needed for the tracking pathway. Niantic notes that a phone’s battery-saving mode can disable sensors required for Adventure Sync. If the phone or fitness app is limiting background activity, distance can be delayed or incomplete even though the in-game Battery Saver is enabled or disabled.

There is also a difference between activity recorded by a connected fitness service and data typed into that service manually. Niantic says manually entered fitness data does not count toward Adventure Sync. So if a walk appears in Apple Health or Google Fit only because it was entered by hand, that entry should not be treated as proof that Adventure Sync will credit the same distance. Test with activity recorded through the supported setup and give syncing time.
Change one troubleshooting factor at a time
A measured sequence makes it easier to identify the setting causing a problem: verify the game feature, verify background location, verify the connected fitness service, temporarily disable system and fitness-app power saving, and then wait several hours. Avoid changing several permissions and power modes at once if you want to know which change helped. Niantic’s guidance supports these checks, but it does not promise a guaranteed instant update or an exact amount of time within those several hours.

- Confirm Adventure Sync is connected to Apple Health or Google Fit; Google Fit requires a compatible Android device.
- Temporarily turn off phone-wide battery saving and battery-saving modes in the fitness service while troubleshooting.
- Do not use manually entered fitness data as a test for Adventure Sync credit, and allow several hours for syncing.
These checks separate three common issues: the feature may not be enabled, the app may lack background access, or the phone and fitness service may be limiting the background tracking pathway. Pokémon GO’s own Battery Saver is a separate display feature and, according to Niantic, does not prevent Adventure Sync from tracking distance.

Why isn’t Pokémon GO tracking my steps or walking distance?
