On supported Sony headphones, use the Sony | Sound Connect app to choose Noise Canceling, Ambient Sound, or Off, set how much outside sound Ambient Sound lets through, and control automatic changes. For compatible over-ear models, disable Adaptive Sound Control and press the left-unit Noise Canceling/Ambient Sound Mode button to switch manually. Menu names, button assignments, and available features vary by model and by Android or iPhone operating system, so use your exact model’s Sony manual if a control described here is missing.

What the three sound modes do

Sony’s headphones generally expose three listening states, although a particular model may combine them differently or omit one from its physical-button sequence. The mode changes how the headphones process environmental sound; it does not change the volume of the music itself.

Mode Use it when What to know
Noise Canceling You want less background noise while listening. Sony describes this mode as useful for background noise. Cancellation performance and the controls available depend on the model.
Ambient Sound You want more outside sound while listening. On supported models, the Sound Connect app provides a level control. A higher level means more ambient pickup.
Off You want neither active noise cancellation nor ambient-sound processing. Some models include Off in the app or switching cycle; others use a different sequence or do not expose it as a separate choice.

Noise Canceling and Ambient Sound are not interchangeable volume controls. Noise Canceling attempts to reduce background noise, while Ambient Sound deliberately feeds some external sound to you. If you need a stable setting, choose one mode manually instead of leaving Adaptive Sound Control in charge.

Before changing anything: identify your model and control path

The instructions below are based on Sony’s official over-ear guidance. Sony uses different names and button layouts across its headphone and earbud ranges, and the Android and iPhone versions of Sound Connect can present different screens. Check these prerequisites first:

#1 Best Overall
Sony WH-1000XM5 Premium Noise Cancelling Wireless Headphones, Black | Auto NC Optimizer, Up to 30 Hrs of Battery, Carrying Case, Crystal Clear Calls, Touch Control, Multipoint Connection
  • PREMIUM NOISE CANCELLATION: Two processors control 8 microphones for unprecedented noise cancellation. With Auto NC Optimizer, noise canceling is automatically optimized based on your wearing conditions and environment.
  • MAGNIFICENT SOUND: Engineered to perfection with the new Integrated Processor V1.
  • CRYSTAL CLEAR HANDS-FREE CALLING: 4 beamforming microphones, precise voice pickup, and advanced audio signal processing.
  • LONG BATTERY LIFE: Up to 30-hour battery life with quick charging (3 min charge for 3 hours of playback).
  • ULTRA-COMFORTABLE: Lightweight design with soft fit leather.
  • Install or update Sony | Sound Connect on the phone paired with the headphones.
  • Charge the headphones enough to stay connected while you change settings.
  • Pair the headphones with the phone and select them in the app’s device list.
  • Keep the exact model name available. It determines whether Adaptive Sound Control, Auto Ambient Sound, an Off mode, a physical NC/Ambient button, or touch-control assignment is available.

If your app shows a different label, do not assume that a similarly named control behaves identically. Open the support page or manual for the exact model and follow its button diagram and menu path.

Switch Noise Canceling and Ambient Sound manually on supported over-ear headphones

Manual switching is the most reliable way to prevent activity- or location-based changes. Sony’s over-ear procedure uses the following sequence.

  1. Connect the headphones. Pair them with your phone, then open Sony | Sound Connect.
  2. Open the device settings. Go to My Device and open Adaptive Sound Control.
  3. Turn Adaptive Sound Control off. This removes the automatic activity and location rules so the physical control can hold the mode you select.
  4. Press the mode button. On the over-ear layout covered by Sony’s guide, the Noise Canceling/Ambient Sound Mode button is the narrow button on the left unit next to the power button. Each press switches between Noise Canceling and Ambient Sound Mode.
  5. Confirm the result. Listen for the headphone’s mode announcement or check the current mode in Sound Connect. If the button does not produce this cycle, your model may use another button assignment or a different sequence; consult its manual rather than repeatedly pressing controls at random.

This procedure does not promise that every over-ear model has exactly the same button position. Sony’s general instructions explicitly make the model qualification important: the control can be differently named or located, and the available switching sequence can vary.

Adjust how much outside sound Ambient Sound lets through

Ambient Sound is adjustable in Sound Connect on supported models. The app path described by Sony is:

  1. Open Sony | Sound Connect and select the connected headphones.
  2. Choose Ambient Sound Control.
  3. Select Ambient Sound, not Noise Canceling.
  4. Move the ambient-sound level slider to the desired value.

Sony’s over-ear guide documents a level range of 1–20. The number is a pickup setting, not a decibel rating or a measurement of noise-cancellation strength. Sony states: The higher the number, the higher the ambient sound pickup level. In practical terms, move toward 1 when you want less processed outside sound and toward 20 when you want more of it, then make small adjustments while listening.

The slider range is a documented control range for the supported guide, not a guarantee that every Sony headphone exposes 20 positions. If your app shows fewer steps, a percentage, or no slider, that is a model or software difference rather than evidence that the headphones are malfunctioning.

Use Auto Ambient Sound when the environment changes

Some supported models provide Auto Ambient Sound. It can adjust the ambient level in response to surrounding noise, and Sony says its sensitivity can be adjusted. This is useful when a fixed level is unsuitable for both quiet and noisy locations, but it also means the amount of outside sound can change without a button press. Turn Auto Ambient Sound off and set a fixed slider value when consistency matters.

Let Adaptive Sound Control change modes automatically

Adaptive Sound Control is the opposite of manual mode selection: it can apply different listening states when the app detects an activity or a registered place. To configure it:

  1. Connect the headphones and open Sony | Sound Connect.
  2. Go to My Device and open Adaptive Sound Control.
  3. Turn the feature on.
  4. Open its action settings.
  5. For each detected action, assign the state your model offers: Noise Canceling, Ambient Sound, or Off.
  6. If you use place-based switching, review the registered locations and allow the phone’s location access required by that feature.

Because the action and place rules are independent of the physical button, a later detection can overwrite the mode you selected manually. Adaptive Sound Control also has a notification-tone option; Sony allows that tone to be turned off if the alerts are distracting. Disabling the tone does not disable the automatic behavior itself.

Understand which setting has priority

Think of the controls as three layers. The mode itself is the current state—Noise Canceling, Ambient Sound, or Off. Ambient Sound Control changes the amount of pickup only when Ambient Sound is active. Adaptive Sound Control can then replace the current state when its activity or place rule is triggered. This explains why raising the ambient slider does not make Noise Canceling stronger and why pressing the physical button may appear ineffective while automatic control is enabled.

For a predictable commute, meeting, or recording session, turn Adaptive Sound Control off first, choose the mode, and set the Ambient Sound level if needed. For changing surroundings, leave it on, assign a state to each action, and check the registered places so an old location rule does not surprise you.

Stop the mode from changing by itself

Over-ear headphones change between Noise Canceling and Ambient Sound

Open My Device → Adaptive Sound Control in Sound Connect. If it is on, turn it off and then select the desired mode with the left-unit NC/Ambient button or the app. Also review action and registered-place settings if you intend to keep automatic control for some situations but not others. A mode change that follows a commute, walking session, or other recognized activity is consistent with Adaptive Sound Control rather than a failed button.

If the notification tone has been disabled, you may not hear an alert when a rule runs. The silent behavior does not mean that automatic switching stopped; verify the feature’s on/off state in the app.

Earbuds switch modes when you touch them

On earbuds, an accidental tap or long press can trigger the assigned touch action. Sony’s Sound Connect instructions allow the touch action to be removed:

  1. Connect the earbuds and open Sound Connect.
  2. Open the device controls or touch-control settings.
  3. Select the control associated with the mode change.
  4. Set its action to Not Assigned, then save the change.

This prevents that particular touch gesture from switching modes. Your model may place the setting under a differently named control page, so use its manual if the option is not visible. Disable only the gesture that is causing the problem; other touch actions can remain assigned if you still use them.

Noise Canceling became weaker after a software update

Sony’s troubleshooting guidance for the WH-1000XM6 notes that Adaptive Sound Control may have become active after an update. First open Sound Connect and verify that Adaptive Sound Control is off. Next confirm that the selected state is Noise Canceling, not Ambient Sound, and select Noise Canceling manually if necessary. Do not treat the ambient slider as a cancellation-strength control: it adjusts outside-sound pickup only.

If the mode is correct but the effect still seems different, check whether the update changed any model-specific sound or control options shown in the app. The WH-1000XM6 example does not establish that every Sony model behaves the same way, so apply this diagnosis only where the model’s support material describes it.

Earbud noise cancellation remains weak

For earbuds, fit is a separate issue from the mode setting. Sony says a poor seal can significantly affect noise canceling. Reseat each earbud and try the supplied ear-tip sizes until the earbud fits securely. These fit instructions apply to in-ear earbuds; do not apply them to over-ear headphones, whose ear-cup seal and physical placement work differently.

After changing tips, test Noise Canceling again rather than judging the result while Ambient Sound is selected. If the app still lacks the controls described for your model, return to its model-specific support page instead of assuming that a fit change can add a missing feature.

Choose a setting for common listening situations

The following choices are a practical way to start; the correct setting still depends on your model and surroundings.

Your priority Start with Adjustment
Reduce steady background noise Noise Canceling Turn Adaptive Sound Control off if you do not want the mode to change.
Hear more of the environment while listening Ambient Sound Use Ambient Sound Control and raise the level gradually; on the documented over-ear guide, the range is 1–20.
Allow the headphones to react to changing surroundings Adaptive Sound Control on Assign Noise Canceling, Ambient Sound, or Off to each detected action and review registered places.
Keep one mode all day Manual mode Turn Adaptive Sound Control off, then use the model’s mode button or the app.
Prevent accidental earbud switching Fixed mode with touch control disabled Set the relevant earbud touch action to Not Assigned.

These are mode-selection recommendations, not performance ratings. Sony does not publish a universal cancellation score or a single control layout for all of its headphones in the guidance covered here.

When a control or menu is missing

Missing controls usually indicate a model, firmware, app-version, or operating-system difference. Work through this order:

  • Confirm that the headphones shown under My Device are the model you are wearing.
  • Update Sound Connect if the phone offers an update, then reconnect the headphones.
  • Look for both Ambient Sound Control and Adaptive Sound Control; one can be available while the other is not.
  • Check the model manual for the physical button name and location. The over-ear guide’s narrow left-unit button is not a universal Sony layout.
  • Check whether your model supports an explicit Off state, Auto Ambient Sound, location rules, or touch-action reassignment. If the manual does not list a feature, the app cannot add it.
  • Use the exact operating-system instructions when Android and iPhone screens differ.

Do not infer that a model is defective simply because it does not show the 1–20 slider or the same switching sequence. Sony documents these functions on supported models, not as a universal promise for every headphone and earbud.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Changing the wrong slider: Ambient Sound level controls outside-sound pickup. It is not a Noise Canceling intensity meter.
  • Leaving automation on while testing: A new activity or registered place can replace the mode immediately. Switch Adaptive Sound Control off for a clean manual test.
  • Assuming every Sony button works alike: The narrow left-unit button described in the over-ear guide is a documented layout, not a universal placement.
  • Applying earbud-fit advice to over-ear headphones: Tip size and insertion affect earbuds; they are not the correct remedy for an over-ear control problem.
  • Expecting an app update to add unsupported hardware features: Sound Connect can expose only the controls Sony provides for that model.
  • Ignoring phone location permission: Place-based Adaptive Sound Control depends on the phone’s location access, so a location rule may not run if that permission is unavailable.

What Sony’s guidance does—and does not—establish

Sony’s official over-ear instructions establish the Sound Connect paths, the 1–20 ambient-level range on the supported guide, the direction of the slider, the left-unit button procedure for that layout, and the way Adaptive Sound Control can use activities or registered places. They do not establish one universal button layout, one universal app screen, or a comparative cancellation-performance figure for every Sony headphone. Treat each setting as model-specific and keep the exact manual available when troubleshooting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I switch Sony headphones from Ambient Sound back to Noise Canceling?

Open Sony | Sound Connect, turn Adaptive Sound Control off under My Device if you want manual control, then select Noise Canceling in the app. On the supported over-ear layout, press the left-unit Noise Canceling/Ambient Sound Mode button to alternate between the two modes.

Why do my Sony headphones keep changing modes?

Adaptive Sound Control may be assigning modes to activities or registered places. Open My Device → Adaptive Sound Control and turn it off for fixed manual behavior, or edit each action and location rule. On earbuds, also check whether an accidental touch gesture is assigned to mode switching and set it to Not Assigned if necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does a higher Ambient Sound number mean?

On Sony’s documented supported over-ear guide, the level runs from 1 to 20, and a higher number means higher ambient-sound pickup. It is not a decibel value and does not measure Noise Canceling strength.

Can I make Sony Noise Canceling stronger with the Ambient Sound slider?

No. The Ambient Sound slider controls how much outside sound is picked up when Ambient Sound is active. To restore Noise Canceling, select Noise Canceling and verify that Adaptive Sound Control is not overriding your choice.

Why is Noise Canceling weaker after updating my Sony headphones?

For the WH-1000XM6, Sony says Adaptive Sound Control may become active after an update. Check that feature first, then confirm that the selected mode is Noise Canceling rather than Ambient Sound. Other models may use different post-update behavior, so follow the exact model manual.

How do I stop accidental mode changes on Sony earbuds?

In Sound Connect, open the earbuds’ device or touch-control settings, choose the gesture assigned to mode switching, and set it to Not Assigned. The menu name can vary by model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is my Sony earbud noise cancellation still weak after selecting Noise Canceling?

Check the fit. Sony says a poor earbud seal can significantly affect noise canceling. Reseat each earbud and try an appropriate supplied ear-tip size. This advice is for in-ear earbuds, not over-ear headphones.

Why can’t I find the 1–20 Ambient Sound control?

The 1–20 range is documented for a supported over-ear guide, not every Sony product. Confirm the model in My Device, update Sound Connect, and consult that model’s manual. A different scale or no slider can be a normal model or operating-system difference.

Can Adaptive Sound Control use my location?

Sony’s guide describes switching at registered places. Review those locations in Adaptive Sound Control and allow the phone’s location access required by the feature. You can assign Noise Canceling, Ambient Sound, or Off to the available actions.

The Bottom Line

For consistent manual control, open Sony | Sound Connect, turn Adaptive Sound Control off, and choose Noise Canceling or Ambient Sound. Use Ambient Sound Control to set pickup—Sony documents 1–20 on supported over-ear models, with higher numbers allowing more outside sound. If modes change unexpectedly, check activity and location rules, earbud touch assignments, and model-specific controls before assuming the headphones are faulty.
