Use the JBL Headphones app to choose the Live Beam 4 sound mode, tune Adaptive Noise Cancelling and ambient sound, and assign what each earbud tap does. For a quick mode change without your phone, use the Smart Charging Case display. Connect the earbuds to the app first: JBL’s quick start guide says advanced controls become available after that connection.
What you can change
The Live Beam 4 has two documented control routes. The JBL Headphones app is the detailed route: it exposes Adaptive Noise Cancelling and ambient sound settings and lets you customize touch gestures. The Smart Charging Case display is the quick route when you want to change ANC or Ambient Sound without opening the app or using a phone.
In practical terms, noise cancelling is the listening mode for reducing outside sound, while ambient modes deliberately pass some of the environment through. The quick start guide identifies the ambient choices as Ambient Aware and TalkThru. Ambient Aware is intended for awareness of surrounding sound; TalkThru is the speech-focused option for briefly hearing people without removing the earbuds. The exact tap assigned to each mode can change after you customize the gestures.

#1 Best Overall
- Hi-Res Audio Wireless with JBL signature sound
- The JBL Live Beam 3's 10mm dynamic drivers are powered by JBL Signature Sound. Each driver is perfectly tuned to deliver deep bass, balanced mid-range, and refined high frequencies—all at any volume level. JBL Spatial Sound makes you feel like you're at a concert as the sound comes from virtually everywhere around you.
- Convenient Smart Charging Case for app-free control
- You can customize every aspect of your JBL Live Beam 3 earbuds with the 1.45-inch touchscreen display on your Smart Charging Case. The display gives you full control of your sound on any devices - laptop, TV, smartphones, or tablets -, without needing to access the JBL App on your smartphone.
- True adaptive noise cancelling with custom control
Before changing any setting
Connect the earbuds to the JBL Headphones app
Install and open the JBL Headphones app, then pair or select the Live Beam 4 inside the app. JBL describes the app as free. The important prerequisite is not a subscription: the quick start guide says the earbuds must be connected to the app to enable advanced controls.
- Put both earbuds in their charging case, open the case, and take them out so they are available to your phone.
- Turn on Bluetooth on the phone and complete the normal Live Beam 4 pairing process if you have not already done so.
- Open the JBL Headphones app and choose the Live Beam 4 when it appears.
- Wait until the app shows the earbuds as connected before looking for sound-mode or gesture controls.
If the app opens but does not offer Live Beam 4 controls, do not try to configure gestures from a generic Bluetooth screen. Return to the app’s device-selection view, make sure the earbuds are the active device, and reconnect them. A connection that only plays audio can exist without exposing the advanced controls described in the guide.
Know which route fits the task
| What you want to do | Best control route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fine-tune Adaptive Noise Cancelling or ambient sound | JBL Headphones app | The app is the documented place for adjusting these settings. |
| Change ANC or Ambient Sound immediately without a phone | Smart Charging Case display | JBL says the case can manage these modes without the phone or app. |
| Change what a tap, press, or other gesture does | JBL Headphones app | The app provides gesture customization; the case display is documented for mode management, not gesture assignment. |
| Check why a tap performs an unexpected action | JBL Headphones app | The current assignments shown there take precedence over an assumed factory layout. |
How to turn noise cancelling on or off
Use the JBL Headphones app
- Connect the Live Beam 4 in the JBL Headphones app as described above.
- Open the device controls for the earbuds.
- Find the section for Adaptive Noise Cancelling and the ambient-sound controls.
- Select the noise-cancelling setting when you want the earbuds to reduce outside sound.
- To stop using noise cancelling, select the available non-ANC or ambient-sound option shown by the app. The app is the authority for the options exposed by your connected unit.
- Listen for the change, then adjust the setting again if the surrounding noise or your ear fit makes the first choice unsuitable.
The app’s wording and layout can change with app updates or phone platform, so follow the labels displayed for the connected Live Beam 4 rather than a screenshot from another device. The key control is the Adaptive Noise Cancelling/ambient-sound area, not the ordinary Bluetooth volume slider.
Use the Smart Charging Case display
- Keep the earbuds paired and place them in or near the Smart Charging Case so the case can show their controls.
- Wake the case display and open the control for ANC or Ambient Sound.
- Choose the mode shown on the display. JBL documents the display as a way to manage ANC or Ambient Sound without a phone or app.
- Return the earbuds to your ears and verify that the listening mode changed.
This route is useful when your phone is in a bag, unavailable, or not running the app. It is a mode-selection shortcut, not a replacement for the app’s gesture editor.

- 48 hours total playback plus wireless charging: Enjoy 12 hours of playtime, plus another 36 in the charging case*. 10 minutes on a USB type-C charging cable will give you another 4 hours of playtime. You can also recharge them wirelessly. (*with ANC off)
- Multi-point connection: Switch effortlessly from one Bluetooth device to another, so if you are watching a video on your tablet, you won’t miss a call on your mobile.
How to switch to Ambient Aware or TalkThru
Switch in the app
- Open the JBL Headphones app with the Live Beam 4 connected.
- Open the same Adaptive Noise Cancelling and ambient-sound controls used for ANC.
- Select Ambient Aware when you want surrounding sound included while listening.
- Select TalkThru when you need the speech-oriented ambient mode.
- Play audio briefly and check that the selected mode matches the situation before you start moving or speaking with someone.
Ambient Aware and TalkThru are separate choices. Selecting one does not mean that every tap will now cycle through both; the tap behavior depends on the gesture assignments currently shown in the app.
Switch from the case
- Wake the Smart Charging Case display.
- Open its ANC or Ambient Sound control.
- Choose the ambient mode presented for the earbuds, then confirm the selection on the display if the case asks for confirmation.
- Put the earbuds back in your ears and check the result.
The product information specifically supports changing ANC or Ambient Sound from the case without the phone. If you need to decide which gesture cycles among ANC, Ambient Aware, and TalkThru, use the app’s gesture screen instead of assuming the case can edit it.
How to change the touch controls
Open the gesture editor
- Connect the Live Beam 4 to the JBL Headphones app.
- Select the earbuds and open the controls or settings area for gestures.
- Inspect the left- and right-earbud assignments shown by the app.
- Select the gesture you want to change, then choose the action offered for that gesture.
- Save or apply the change if the app presents a confirmation control.
- Test one gesture at a time with audio playing so you can identify which assignment changed.
The app is the reliable reference because JBL supports customization. A tap that once changed sound modes may later control playback or another function after you edit it.

Understand the guide’s illustrated layout
The quick start guide illustrates a division between the two sides:
Rank #3
- JBL Pure Bass sound: JBL Vibe Beam 2 earbuds feature 8mm dynamic drivers that deliver exciting JBL Pure Bass sound.
- Active Noise Cancelling:Listen to your surroundings & filter out distracting noise. Smart Ambient lets you control how much of the outside world you want to hear, so you can talk with others or stay aware of your surroundings while keeping your earbuds in
- 4 mics for crisp, clear calls: Two mics on each earbud pick up and clearly transmit your voice while canceling out ambient noise. So you can make clear, crisp calls even when you're walking through a busy park on a breezy day.
- 40 total hours of playback: Enjoy 10 hours of playtime, plus another three full charges (30Hrs) in the charging case.* Need to recharge even faster? 10 minutes on a USB type-C charging cable will give you another three hours of playtime. (*with ANC off)
- JBL Headphones app: Select the EQ that fits your style or customize your own. Voice Prompts in multiple languages give you useful information (e.g.if battery is running low). Or chill out and recharge in Relax Mode by choosing one of five peaceful sounds.
- Left earbud: ANC, Ambient Aware, and TalkThru sound-mode controls are illustrated here.
- Right earbud: playback and assistant controls are illustrated here.
Those illustrations explain the guide’s control scheme; they do not establish one unchangeable assignment for every Live Beam 4 setup. JBL’s app supports gesture customization, so your connected earbuds may show a different mapping. Check the current labels in the app before troubleshooting a tap.
Test a new assignment safely
- Start a familiar audio track at a moderate volume.
- Use the gesture once and observe the app, case display, or listening result.
- Wait a moment before trying another gesture, so two commands are not mistaken for one.
- If the result is not what you intended, return to the assignment screen and read the action attached to that side and gesture.
Testing this way separates a changed assignment from a missed touch. It also prevents you from assuming that the left-side sound-mode illustration still applies after customization.
App controls versus case controls
Both routes change listening modes, but they serve different moments. The table below keeps the documented capabilities separate.

| Best use | Initial setup, detailed adjustment, and checking assignments. | Quick mode changes away from the phone. |
Troubleshooting unexpected behavior
A tap changes the wrong thing
Open the JBL Headphones app and read the assignment for the exact earbud and gesture you are using. The guide’s illustrated left/right arrangement is not a guarantee after customization. Reassign the gesture in the app, apply the change, and test it again with audio playing.

The sound mode did not change after a tap
Check whether the gesture is still assigned to ANC, Ambient Aware, or TalkThru. If it is assigned to playback or assistant control, the tap is working as configured; it simply is not a sound-mode command. Use the app to choose the desired sound-mode action or use the case display for a direct ANC/Ambient Sound change.
The app does not show advanced controls
Confirm that the Live Beam 4 is selected inside the JBL Headphones app, not merely connected for Bluetooth audio. JBL’s quick start guide makes the app connection a prerequisite for advanced controls. If necessary, close and reopen the app, return to its device-selection screen, and reconnect the earbuds before trying the controls again.
The case does not provide the expected option
Use the case display specifically for the ANC or Ambient Sound functions JBL documents. Gesture editing belongs in the app. If you need a customized sequence of taps, reconnect the earbuds to the app and verify the assignments there.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You cannot tell which mode is active
Change the mode once in the app, then listen in a consistent environment. After you know the app’s current assignment, use the case display or the confirmed gesture for later changes. Avoid testing several gestures at once, because a playback command can be mistaken for a failed sound-mode switch.

A practical setup for common situations
Quiet desk or home listening
Connect the earbuds to the app, select the sound mode you prefer, and leave the gesture assignments visible while you test them. This is the best time to decide whether the left-side sound-mode control and right-side playback control suit your habits or need customization.
Commuting or working around steady noise
Use the app to select Adaptive Noise Cancelling before leaving, then verify that the assigned gesture can reach the mode you want. If you do not want to handle your phone later, the Smart Charging Case provides the documented alternate route for ANC or Ambient Sound changes.
Talking to someone briefly
Choose TalkThru in the app or from the case’s Ambient Sound control, depending on which route is available. If you expect to switch into it by tapping, confirm that TalkThru is actually assigned to that gesture; the factory illustration may not match a customized setup.
Wanting environmental awareness
Select Ambient Aware when you want ambient sound included, and verify the result before relying on a gesture. The app remains the place to inspect or alter the command if the earbuds do not respond as expected.
Keeping control changes predictable
- Use the app for the first configuration session, because it enables advanced controls and shows the current gesture map.
- Write down or remember which side handles sound modes and which handles playback after customization; do not rely on an old tap pattern.
- Use the case display when the task is only a quick ANC or Ambient Sound change and your phone is not convenient.
- When troubleshooting, change one assignment or mode at a time and test immediately.
- Refer to JBL’s current product page and quick start guide if the labels on your connected device differ from an older illustration.
What the official documentation establishes
JBL’s product information identifies the Headphones app as the place to adjust Adaptive Noise Cancelling and ambient sound, customize gestures, and access Live Beam 4 controls. It also identifies the Smart Charging Case display as a way to manage ANC or Ambient Sound without a phone or app. The quick start guide adds the prerequisite that advanced controls are enabled by connecting the earbuds to the app and illustrates left-side sound-mode controls alongside right-side playback and assistant controls. Because the app permits customization, always use the assignments displayed for your own connected earbuds.
