Do not lower sensitivity by the percentage of weight you removed. There is no established weight-to-DPI or weight-to-game-sensitivity formula. Start by matching the new mouse’s DPI and your game’s sensitivity to the old setup, verify the active profile and DPI stage, and then make one small change at a time only if you consistently overshoot or undershoot.
A lighter mouse can feel faster because it starts, stops and changes direction with less physical effort, but that change in feel is subjective. Treat the transition as a controlled calibration problem: keep everything else steady, test under comparable conditions, and change only the control that is actually causing the problem.
Why a lighter mouse can feel “too fast” without changing DPI
DPI determines how far the cursor or in-game view moves for a given physical movement. Mouse weight does not directly alter that setting. What changes is the effort and momentum involved in moving the mouse. A lighter shell may require less force to start a flick and less force to redirect it, so the same hand motion can feel quicker or harder to stop.

The reviewed manufacturer guidance discusses fit, weight, DPI and controls, but does not publish a conversion that turns a weight difference into a DPI or sensitivity adjustment. In particular, do not reduce sensitivity by the same percentage as the mouse’s weight reduction. A 20 percent lighter mouse does not imply a 20 percent lower DPI or game sensitivity.

The practical target is repeatability. If you can stop on targets consistently after a short adjustment period, the setting is working, regardless of the mouse’s weight. If you repeatedly pass the target or stop short under the same conditions, then a small control change is justified.
Know which setting you are changing
Several controls can make a pointer or crosshair feel different. They are not interchangeable, and changing the wrong one can make desktop behavior, one game, and another game disagree.
| Control | What it changes | Where to check it |
|---|---|---|
| Mouse DPI | Cursor or aim movement relative to physical movement, as implemented by the mouse | Mouse software, onboard DPI buttons, or an in-game setup screen when supported |
| In-game sensitivity | View or aim movement inside that specific game | The game’s input or sensitivity menu |
| Operating-system pointer speed | Desktop pointer movement outside the game | Windows or macOS mouse settings |
| Pointer acceleration | Whether pointer behavior changes with movement characteristics; this can make the same hand motion feel different across apps | Windows Enhance pointer precision or a vendor’s equivalent setting |
| Polling or report rate | How often the mouse reports its position; it is not a cursor-distance or sensitivity control | Mouse software |
Keep these categories separate while troubleshooting. DPI and game sensitivity affect movement scale. Operating-system speed and acceleration primarily affect desktop pointer behavior. Polling rate concerns reporting frequency, not how far the pointer travels.
Record the old setup before you switch
Write down the settings that produced the familiar feel. This gives you a reversible baseline instead of relying on memory.
- The old mouse’s DPI, including the exact active DPI stage rather than only the range shown in software.
- The game’s sensitivity and any separate aim, scoped, vehicle or profile-specific values you use.
- Windows pointer speed and whether Enhance pointer precision is enabled, or the corresponding macOS tracking setting.
- The mouse software profile associated with the game, including any shift-DPI or DPI-cycle assignment.
- Your usual surface, grip, and practice task. These physical factors affect how the transition feels even when the numerical settings are unchanged.
If the old mouse is still available, open its software and photograph or note every relevant value. If it is not, use the last settings you deliberately chose rather than trying to infer them from the new mouse’s default.
Calibrate the lighter mouse step by step
1. Match the previous DPI
Set the new mouse to the same DPI as the old one whenever the hardware supports that value. Use the mouse’s software or onboard controls. Do not assume the first number displayed is the active one: gaming mice commonly provide several DPI stages, and a button press can cycle between them.

Keep the same stage selected while testing. If the new mouse cannot reproduce the old DPI exactly, choose the nearest available value and record the difference; do not simultaneously alter the game’s sensitivity, operating-system speed and polling rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Restore the game’s sensitivity
Open the game’s input or mouse settings and enter the previous sensitivity. Restore any game-specific profile or separate sensitivity values you recorded. Start with the old combination even if the lighter shell feels unusual. This isolates the effect of the hardware from a software change.
3. Verify the active profile and DPI stage
Check that the profile loaded for the game is the one you edited. Confirm the current DPI stage, the default stage and any shift-DPI assignment. A DPI-cycle button may have been pressed accidentally, and some utilities can return to a default stage after a profile change or wake event. Those behaviors depend on the model, so verify them in the utility instead of assuming a universal rule.
The Logitech G302 documentation, for example, describes multiple DPI stages, a default stage, optional shift DPI, report-rate choices and profile-specific pointer settings. Those features and ranges apply to that mouse and software combination; they should not be treated as specifications for every model.
4. Keep operating-system settings steady
If your problem is game aim, leave the desktop pointer settings alone initially and adjust the game’s own sensitivity only after confirming DPI. If the desktop pointer also feels wrong, correct it through the operating system rather than compensating inside every game.
On Windows, Logitech documents the path Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Additional mouse settings, where the pointer-speed control is available. Microsoft’s current support layout also places a Cursor speed slider and Enhance pointer precision under Additional mouse options. Labels can vary by Windows version.

On macOS, Logitech lists Apple menu > System Settings > Mouse > Point & Click, then Tracking speed. If you use Logi Options+ with a supported device, select the mouse, open Point and Scroll, and adjust Pointer speed. The available controls depend on the device and utility version.
5. Test with the same task and conditions
Use the same game, map or practice scenario, surface and grip you used before. A short, repeatable drill is more useful than judging one dramatic flick. Test several sessions and look for a pattern:
- Overshoot: you repeatedly move past the target or need a corrective motion back.
- Undershoot: you repeatedly stop before the target and need an extra movement.
- Inconsistency: some movements are early and others late, with no clear directional pattern. This may indicate unfamiliar handling, an active DPI change, acceleration or another setting rather than a sensitivity value that needs a large adjustment.
The available guidance does not prescribe a validated number of sessions or a universal score. The useful criterion is repeated behavior under comparable conditions, not a single attempt.

If overshoot persists after you have confirmed the DPI and profile, make a modest reduction to one relevant sensitivity control. If undershoot persists, make a modest increase. Retest before touching another setting. For game aim, change the game’s sensitivity first; for desktop movement, change operating-system pointer speed or tracking speed. Keep a note of the old and new value so you can reverse the change.
Do not calculate the adjustment from the mouse-weight difference. The correct amount depends on your hand motion, grip, surface and tolerance for speed, and no fixed conversion is established by the cited manufacturer material.
7. Revisit polling rate separately, if necessary
Polling rate is the frequency at which the mouse reports its position. A 1,000 Hz setting reports 1,000 times per second in the manufacturer’s example; the G302 documentation lists model-specific report-rate options from 125 to 1,000 reports per second. These figures describe reporting behavior, not sensitivity.

Leave polling rate unchanged while evaluating DPI and sensitivity. If you later change it for a separate reason, check that the mouse supports the selected rate and consider battery use on wireless hardware and possible system-performance effects. Do not use polling rate as a substitute for a sensitivity adjustment.
How to decide whether the issue is DPI or game sensitivity
The desktop and every game feel fast
First check the active DPI stage and mouse profile. If the DPI is higher than intended, correcting it should affect both desktop and game movement. Then verify Windows pointer speed or macOS tracking speed. If movement changes with how quickly you move rather than only with distance, inspect pointer acceleration settings.
Only one game feels fast
Leave the mouse DPI and operating-system settings at the verified baseline and inspect that game’s sensitivity and profile. A game can have its own sensitivity, scoped values or per-profile settings. Change only the affected game’s control and test again.
The desktop feels right but aim is inconsistent
Confirm that the game profile is active and that a DPI-cycle or shift-DPI button is not being held or triggered. Then test the game’s sensitivity with the same surface and grip. If the pattern is not consistently overshoot or undershoot, spend more time adapting before making a numerical change.
The feel changes after the computer wakes
Check the mouse utility after wake or profile switching. Some software may return to a default DPI stage in those circumstances, but this is model-dependent. Re-select the intended profile and stage, then test before changing sensitivity.

Windows pointer acceleration and cross-application differences
Windows pointer speed and Enhance pointer precision are separate from a game’s sensitivity control. Pointer acceleration can make movement depend on movement characteristics, so a desktop action may not feel identical to a game that handles input differently. If your desktop pointer is the problem, use the Windows pointer controls; if in-game aim is the problem, begin with the game’s setting and the mouse DPI.

Keep the acceleration choice consistent while comparing the old and new mice. Changing it at the same time as DPI prevents you from identifying which setting caused the new behavior. If a game offers its own raw-input or acceleration option, treat that as a game-specific control and test it independently rather than assuming the Windows setting governs every title.
Common mistakes after moving to a lighter mouse
- Using a weight-ratio formula: no supported formula converts grams into a required DPI or sensitivity percentage.
- Changing several controls together: altering DPI, game sensitivity, pointer speed and polling rate at once removes your baseline.
- Trusting the default DPI: the active stage may not be the stage you think is selected.
- Confusing polling rate with speed: reporting frequency does not determine cursor travel distance.
- Judging one flick: a single miss says little about a repeatable adjustment.
- Copying another model’s software range: DPI stages, profile behavior, shift DPI and report-rate choices vary by mouse and utility.
- Assuming lighter means better aim: manufacturer fit guidance recommends a mouse that does not feel too light or heavy for your hand, but it does not establish that a lighter model improves performance for every user.
A practical adjustment log
A small log makes the process measurable without pretending there is a universal ideal setting. Use one row for each test:
| Test item | What to record |
|---|---|
| Hardware | Mouse model, active profile and DPI stage |
| Game | Game name, mode and in-game sensitivity values |
| System | Windows pointer speed or macOS tracking speed, plus acceleration state |
| Conditions | Surface, grip and practice task |
| Result | Repeated overshoot, undershoot or no consistent pattern |
| Next change | One control and its new value, with the previous value retained for rollback |
When a change helps, keep it and repeat the same test later. When it does not, restore the previous value before trying another control. This prevents a series of small, undocumented changes from becoming a new source of inconsistency.

Manufacturer guidance can explain DPI, profiles, fit and report rate, but it does not provide a named population statistic for how mouse weight changes required sensitivity or how long adaptation takes. There is therefore no evidence-based “best DPI for a lighter mouse” or guaranteed percentage reduction.
Choose the lighter mouse because its fit and handling suit you, not because its weight predicts a particular sensitivity value. Logitech G’s buying guidance advises choosing a gaming mouse that fits your hand and does not feel too light or heavy. That is a fit recommendation, not proof that one weight class improves aim for every player.
Final calibration checklist
- Record the old DPI, game sensitivity, system pointer setting and profile.
- Set the new mouse to the same DPI and restore the game’s previous sensitivity.
- Confirm the active profile, DPI stage and any DPI-cycle or shift-DPI controls.
- Keep operating-system settings and polling rate unchanged during the first comparison.
- Practice with the same game, surface, grip and task until a pattern appears.
- Reduce one relevant sensitivity control modestly for repeated overshoot, or increase it modestly for repeated undershoot.
- Retest and document the result before changing anything else.
The reliable answer is calibration, not conversion: preserve your old numerical baseline, verify what the mouse is actually using, and let repeated movement behavior—not the mouse’s weight percentage—determine the next small adjustment.
