For an external monitor, make these adjustments in the display’s on-screen display (OSD), opened with its physical buttons or joystick. Start with brightness, then tune contrast and sharpness independently while viewing ordinary text, photographs, and video. Menu names, button sequences, available ranges, and automatic features differ by model, so use your monitor’s manual for the exact path. Dell’s support guidance likewise notes that OSD access and navigation vary between monitors.
There is no brightness percentage, contrast number, or sharpness value that is comfortable for everyone. Room lighting, panel characteristics, content, viewing distance, and personal preference all change the result. The practical goal is a readable, natural-looking image that does not feel glaring or muddy in the lighting you are using now.
Where the controls are
Most standalone monitors keep picture controls inside an OSD rather than in Windows or macOS. Look along the lower edge, rear-right edge, or underside of the display for buttons marked Menu, Enter, arrows, plus/minus, or a small joystick. Pressing Menu or the joystick usually opens the OSD; moving the control selects an item, and pressing it confirms the choice.
Manufacturers organize the controls differently. Common headings include Picture, Display, Color, Brightness/Contrast, or Image. Brightness and contrast may be together, while sharpness can be under a separate Advanced, Image, or Display section. Do not assume that a button sequence found for another monitor will work on yours. The model manual identifies the exact control, input-specific behavior, and reset procedure.

Laptop screens and all-in-one computers
On a built-in laptop or all-in-one panel, the operating system normally exposes a brightness control through its quick settings or display settings. Those controls change the integrated panel, not an independently connected monitor. A keyboard brightness key can also be limited to the built-in display.
Why Windows may not show a slider
Microsoft explains that the Windows brightness slider may be absent when an external display is connected; in that situation, use the monitor’s own buttons or joystick. Microsoft’s display-brightness guidance describes this behavior. A missing slider is therefore not, by itself, evidence of a failed monitor or graphics driver.
Prepare a useful viewing test
Adjustments are easier to judge when the conditions match how you normally work. Turn on the room lights you typically use, remove direct reflections from the panel, and sit at your usual distance. Use familiar material rather than a highly edited demo image:

- A photograph containing both shadows and bright areas reveals whether detail is being lost at either end.
- A video frame or game scene shows whether the image looks unnaturally flat, harsh, or over-processed.
Keep the monitor at its native or intended display resolution while judging sharpness. Scaling, a non-native resolution, or an active image-enhancement mode can make text look soft even when the sharpness control is reasonable.

Step 1: Set brightness for the room
Brightness controls the display’s overall light output. It is the first adjustment because an excessively bright or dim image can make contrast and sharpness judgments misleading.
- Open the OSD and select the item labeled Brightness or a similarly named picture control.
- With ordinary text on screen, raise or lower the setting in small increments until the white background is comfortable against the room around it.
- Check a photograph and a dark interface. Confirm that you can see shadow detail without making the whole screen look luminous.
- Close the OSD and use the display for several minutes. If the room becomes brighter or darker, reassess the setting rather than treating the earlier value as permanent.
Do not copy a percentage from a different monitor. The reviewed manufacturer manuals and support pages document the control but do not establish a universal comfort target. A value that looks moderate on one panel can be glaring on another, and the same panel can require a different setting at night than in daylight.
When automatic brightness is available
Some monitors include a light sensor or an automatic brightness feature. Such functions can respond to ambient light, but they are model- and mode-dependent. If you enable one, observe whether the screen changes as the room changes and whether those changes suit your work. Automatic behavior is not guaranteed to be available on every input or picture preset.

Step 2: Tune contrast without crushing detail
Contrast changes the separation between dark and bright portions of the image. It is separate from brightness: brightness changes the display’s overall output, while contrast changes how strongly tones are differentiated.
- Open the Brightness/Contrast or Picture section after brightness feels reasonable.
- Display a photograph or document containing both dark text and bright backgrounds.
- Make a small contrast change, then inspect the darkest and lightest areas. Look for lost shadow texture, clipped highlights, or text that appears overly harsh.
- Return toward the previous value if either extreme loses detail. Choose the lowest adjustment that gives the clarity you want rather than automatically moving the control to its maximum.
There is no evidence in the cited guidance for a universal maximum-contrast recommendation. Preset modes such as Standard, Movie, Game, or sRGB can apply their own contrast behavior, so record which mode was active when you made the adjustment.
Step 3: Adjust sharpness only when it solves a visible problem
Sharpness is an image-processing control, not a substitute for the correct resolution or scaling. Increasing it can add edge enhancement: letters may appear outlined, and fine lines can develop bright or dark halos. Reducing it too far can make text and interfaces look soft.
- Confirm that the operating system is sending the monitor its native or recommended resolution.
- Open the monitor’s Image, Display, or Advanced picture controls and locate Sharpness, if the option exists.
- View normal text at the size you use every day, not a magnified test pattern alone.
- Change the setting by one or two steps, compare letter edges and fine details, and keep the modest value that looks clear without visible halos.
Some monitors hide sharpness in particular modes or inputs. The BenQ EW270Q manual documents sharpness as a model control, while the BenQ BL2485TC manual shows that available options depend on the selected picture mode and input. Your monitor may therefore offer a different range or no sharpness control at all.

Why a setting is missing or unavailable
A greyed-out or absent control usually reflects the current connection or picture mode rather than a hardware fault. Check these conditions in order:
- Picture preset: Change from a specialized mode to Standard or a user mode and see whether manual controls reappear.
- Input source: The monitor can store separate settings for HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, or another input. Select the input you are actually using before judging the menu.
- Automatic brightness: Sensor-based features can take control of brightness or limit manual adjustment. Turn the feature off temporarily if you need direct control.
- Signal format: Some monitors restrict processing controls for HDR, high-refresh-rate, or other signal modes. Consult the model manual rather than forcing a setting.
- Reset state: If an unusual combination of settings persists, use the OSD’s factory reset only after noting any custom input, color, or ergonomic settings you want to restore.
The BL2485TC documentation specifically states that options can depend on the selected picture mode and input, and that some settings may be unavailable while its brightness-intelligence feature is active. These restrictions are examples of why instructions for one model cannot be treated as universal.
Manual controls versus automatic adjustment
Both approaches can be useful, but they solve different problems. Manual settings provide a stable reference; automation responds to changing conditions and may move the image while you work.

For color-critical work, a separately validated calibration workflow is more appropriate than relying solely on a comfort adjustment. The controls described here are for everyday viewing and do not establish color accuracy for photography, video mastering, or print matching.

Windows workflow when an external monitor is connected
Use Windows display settings for the built-in panel when available, but expect to use the external monitor’s OSD for its own brightness, contrast, and sharpness. A practical workflow is:
- Open Windows display settings and identify which rectangle represents the external monitor.
- Set the resolution and refresh rate recommended for that display so that text is not being softened by an unsuitable signal.
- If Windows provides no brightness slider for the external display, leave that setting alone and press the monitor’s Menu button or joystick instead.
- Adjust the external display’s brightness, contrast, and sharpness in its OSD while keeping the external display selected as the one you are viewing.
- Repeat the check after switching between laptop-only, duplicate, and extended-display arrangements, because the active signal and monitor input can change.
Changing a Windows software slider, when one is present, does not guarantee that it controls an external monitor. The monitor’s own controls remain the authoritative path for displays that do not expose software brightness control.
Troubleshooting common symptoms

When you move the monitor, change rooms, or replace a cable or input device, use the same order so that one control does not mask another:

- Set the intended resolution, refresh rate, input, and picture mode.
- Arrange the room lighting and eliminate direct reflections.
- Set brightness while viewing ordinary text and a mostly white page.
- Check contrast with an image containing both shadows and highlights.
- Set sharpness at native resolution using normal text and fine edges.
- Review automatic brightness and picture enhancements; keep them only if their behavior is predictable and useful.
- Save the monitor’s user preset if the OSD provides one, and note which input it belongs to.
Make changes in small increments and pause between them. Looking at a setting for a few seconds can make a large change seem normal; comparing familiar content at your usual distance gives a more useful decision.
What these adjustments can and cannot establish
Brightness, contrast, and sharpness settings are practical viewing controls. The cited support material does not establish a universal numeric target, a guarantee that a particular low-brightness or low-blue-light mode prevents eye disease, or a medical treatment for discomfort. If viewing remains uncomfortable after removing glare and choosing a sensible image level, address the surrounding lighting, viewing distance, break habits, or seek qualified professional advice rather than assuming another monitor percentage will solve the problem.
For ordinary work, the reliable method is therefore model-specific OSD control, adjusted in the order brightness, contrast, then sharpness, with automatic features treated as optional and mode-dependent. Your manual remains the source of truth for the exact menu path and for controls that disappear under a particular input or preset.
