On a Kindle e-reader, open the light controls from Quick Actions or while a book is open, then move the brightness scale (or tap + and −). On models that support it, open Screen and brightness and choose Brightness and warmth to make the front light warmer. The Kindle app uses a different path: open a book, tap the top center, choose Aa, and move Screen Brightness.
There is no official “best” brightness or warmth number. Set both gradually for the room and your eyes, and first confirm whether you are using a dedicated Kindle e-reader or the phone/tablet app.
First identify which Kindle you are adjusting
Amazon uses different controls for dedicated Kindle e-readers and the Kindle reading app. A Paperwhite, basic Kindle, Oasis or another e-reader has a hardware front-light control exposed through Quick Actions and reading controls. The iOS or Android app has an in-book Aa panel with a brightness slider. Instructions for one should not be assumed to work on the other.
Dedicated Kindle e-reader
If you can swipe down from the top of the device and see a system panel with a light scale, you have an e-reader interface. The exact wording and arrangement can vary by generation. Amazon’s screen-light instructions cover the supported e-reader controls.
#1 Best Overall
- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Kindle app on a phone or tablet
If you are reading in an app, use the separate procedure later in this guide. The app’s documented control is screen brightness; the e-reader’s Brightness and warmth menu should not be expected to appear in the app.
Find the model before troubleshooting
On the e-reader, open More or the main menu, choose Settings, and look for Your Account, Device Info or a similar information page; the label depends on generation. You can then compare the model and generation with Amazon’s Kindle identification guide. Model identification matters because adjustable warm light is not present on every Kindle.
Adjust brightness on a Kindle e-reader
From the Home screen
- Wake the Kindle and go to the Home screen or Library.
- Swipe down from the top edge to open Quick Actions.
- Use the brightness scale, or tap + and − for incremental changes.
- Stop when the page is legible without looking like a glowing light source in the room. This last step is practical guidance, not an Amazon-prescribed level.
Amazon describes the control this way: “To adjust the brightness, use the scale or the + or – buttons for gradual change.” Read the complete instructions in Adjust the Screen Light on Your Kindle E-Reader.
While a book is open
- Tap near the top of the page to reveal the reading toolbar.
- Open the light controls shown in that toolbar. On some generations they appear directly; on others they are inside the expanded settings panel.
- Move the brightness scale or tap + and −.
- Tap the page area again to return to reading.
If tapping the top does nothing, tap once rather than swiping, make sure the book page is active, and try the top-center area. A full-screen menu, a PDF with unusual page behavior or a temporarily hidden toolbar can make the controls seem missing.
Use the Settings route
From the Home screen, open Settings, then Screen and brightness (the wording can differ by model). This route exposes the same front-light controls and, on compatible devices, the warmth control. The Quick Actions panel is faster for ordinary changes; Settings is useful when you are checking whether warmth is supported.
Turn the front light fully on or off quickly
On compatible Kindle e-readers, Amazon says a long press on the brightness + or − button can maximize the front light or turn it off. Hold the button rather than tapping repeatedly. If your device only changes one step at a time, release it and use the scale; the long-press behavior is model-dependent.
Adjust warm light (warmth) on compatible Kindles
Open the Brightness and warmth menu
- Open Settings from the Home screen, or open the reading toolbar and enter the screen-light settings.
- Choose Screen and brightness.
- Select Brightness and warmth.
- Move the warmth control toward the warmer end for a more amber display, or back toward the cooler end for a whiter display.
- Adjust brightness separately; warmth changes the color tone and does not replace the brightness setting.
Amazon’s documented route is: “Alternatively, use the Brightness and warmth option in the Screen and brightness setting menu to configure brightness and warmth.” The wording and available controls depend on the Kindle model. See the official screen-light help page for the current menu description.

What warmth changes
Warmth shifts the front light’s color appearance; it is not a text-size, font or page-color setting. A warmer setting can look more amber, while a cooler setting looks closer to white. Because room lighting and personal preference vary, move the control in small increments while viewing an actual page.
Which model is documented as having adjustable warm light?
Amazon’s identification material specifically lists adjustable warm light for the Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation, 2024 release), including its Kids and Signature variants. That is a documented feature, not proof that every earlier or unrelated Kindle has it. Amazon’s guide directory covers many generations, but the available documentation does not provide an exhaustive warm-light compatibility matrix.
| Kindle model or group | Adjustable warm light in the cited material | Adjustable front light | How to interpret the evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindle Paperwhite, 12th Generation (2024 release) | Yes | Yes | Listed by Amazon’s identification guide; use Brightness and warmth. |
| Kindle Paperwhite Kids, 12th Generation (2024 release) | Yes | Yes | Included with the 12th-generation Paperwhite variants in Amazon’s feature identification. |
| Kindle Paperwhite Signature, 12th Generation (2024 release) | Yes | Yes | Included with the 12th-generation Paperwhite variants in Amazon’s feature identification. |
| Other Kindle generations and models | Not stated in the cited material | Not stated as a complete matrix | Check the exact model rather than inferring support from the product family name. |
Use Amazon’s Identify Your Kindle E-Reader page to match the physical device to its generation and listed features.
Adjust brightness in the Kindle reading app
- Open a book in the Kindle app on your phone or tablet.
- Tap the top center of the page to show the reading controls.
- Tap Aa to open reading settings.
- Choose the screen or brightness section and move the Screen Brightness slider.
- Tap outside the panel to return to the book.
Amazon documents this path in its accessible reading options for Kindle reading apps. That guidance establishes the app’s brightness slider; it does not establish that the app has the same Brightness and warmth control as a compatible dedicated e-reader. If you do not see a warmth slider in the app, that absence is consistent with the documented app path rather than evidence that your phone is malfunctioning.
Choose a comfortable setting without chasing a magic number
Amazon’s support instructions explain how to move the controls but do not prescribe a brightness percentage, warmth value or universal nighttime setting. A comfortable setting depends on ambient light, the page background, your viewing distance and personal sensitivity. Treat the following as a repeatable adjustment method, not a medical standard.
For a bright room or outdoors
- Start with enough brightness that text remains distinct from reflections on the display.
- Increase brightness only until the page is easy to read; extra light can make the screen look unnecessarily harsh.
- Leave warmth near the setting that gives you the clearest contrast in that environment.
For a dim room
- Lower brightness before changing warmth. This reduces the amount of front light while preserving the page layout.
- If your model supports warmth, move it gradually toward a warmer tone and read a full paragraph before deciding.
- Recheck after the room gets darker; a setting that seemed subtle earlier may look intense later.
For late-night reading
Make small changes rather than jumping from minimum to maximum. Use the page itself as the test: letters should be clear, the background should not feel like a lamp, and you should not need to squint. If you switch between rooms, adjust from the current setting instead of assuming one fixed level will suit every location.
For shared or changing light conditions
Quick Actions lets you make a short brightness adjustment without leaving the book. Keep warmth where the page looks natural to you, then change brightness as the surrounding light changes. This separates the amount of light from its color and avoids repeatedly rebuilding your preferred tone.

A repeatable two-pass adjustment routine
When the page feels wrong, changing both sliders at once makes it difficult to tell which control helped. Use two passes instead:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Set brightness first. Look at several lines of ordinary body text, not a title or illustration. Raise or lower the scale until the letters are distinct and the page is not noticeably brighter than the surrounding room.
- Set warmth second. Move the warmth control a small distance, read a full paragraph, and compare it with the previous setting. A warmer tone should be judged on the page you actually read, because a cover or menu can have very different colors.
- Recheck after a few minutes. Initial contrast can feel different once your eyes have settled. Make one more small change if needed, then leave the controls alone.
This routine works from Quick Actions, the in-book toolbar or the Screen and brightness page. It also prevents a common mistake: using warmth to solve a brightness problem, or using brightness to compensate for a color tone you dislike.
Quick decision tree when a control is missing
- No light scale after swiping down: confirm that you are on the e-reader Home screen or in a book, and swipe from the top edge. If the panel still does not appear, open Settings and look for Screen and brightness.
- Brightness is present but warmth is absent: identify the exact model and generation. The warmth menu is model-dependent and is not a software switch for every Kindle.
- You see only font choices: you are probably in the Aa text-display panel. Return to the reading toolbar or Settings and select the screen-light controls.
- You are on a phone or tablet: stay in the app’s Aa menu and use Screen Brightness. Do not use the missing e-reader menu as a compatibility test.
- The toolbar will not open: tap once near the top center, wait for the controls, and try again. Use Home-screen Quick Actions or Settings if the book format keeps the toolbar hidden.
Common adjustment mistakes
Confusing front light with the device display
On an e-reader, the scale controls the front light. In the app, the documented slider is called Screen Brightness, and the phone or tablet’s own display setting can also affect what you see. If the app slider moved but the result seems unchanged, check the host device’s system brightness as well.
Assuming a product family guarantees warmth
Names such as Paperwhite do not replace model identification. Amazon specifically identifies the 12th-generation Paperwhite released in 2024, including Kids and Signature variants, as having adjustable warm light. For another generation, check Amazon’s identification information instead of inferring support from the family name.
Holding the wrong control
The long-press shortcut applies to the brightness + or − buttons on compatible e-readers. Holding a warmth control, a text-size control or a phone’s system button will not produce the same result. If a long press only makes one incremental change, use the scale and treat that behavior as a model variation.

Changing typography to solve a lighting issue
Font size, typeface, spacing and margins belong to the Aa menu. They can improve legibility, but they do not change the front-light level or color tone. Make the light adjustment in Screen and brightness, then use Aa only for text presentation.
Keep screen-light controls separate from text-display controls
Kindle exposes several reading adjustments that can appear close together but affect different things:
Rank #4
- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Upgrade your reading experience – The Signature Edition features an auto-adjusting front light, wireless charging, and 32 GB storage.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Adapts to your surroundings – The auto-adjusting front light lets you read in the brightest sunlight or late into the night.
- Brightness: changes the e-reader’s front-light level, or the app’s display-brightness slider.
- Warmth: changes the color tone on compatible e-readers.
- Font and layout: changes typeface, size, spacing, margins and related page presentation through the Aa menu.
If text is too small, adjust the font settings; if the page is too bright or too cool, use the screen-light controls. Mixing these menus is a common reason readers conclude that a setting is unavailable.
When a model upgrade is the only way to add warmth
If your current Kindle has a front-light brightness control but no warmth option, software troubleshooting cannot add a feature that the hardware does not provide. Amazon identifies the 12th-generation Paperwhite (2024 release), along with its Kids and Signature variants, as having adjustable warm light. That makes it a documented option for readers who specifically require this control, while the brightness instructions in this article remain applicable to owners of other supported e-readers. Verify the exact model and regional availability on Amazon’s current identification and product documentation before buying.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I adjust brightness on a Kindle e-reader?
Swipe down from the top to open Quick Actions, then move the brightness scale or tap + and −. While reading, tap the top of the page to reveal the toolbar and use the same light control. You can also open Settings > Screen and brightness.
Where is the warm-light setting on a Kindle?
On a compatible e-reader, open Settings > Screen and brightness > Brightness and warmth. The menu name and availability vary by model. Warmth is separate from brightness and changes the color tone rather than the light level.
Why does my Kindle have brightness but no warmth slider?
Adjustable warm light is not available on every Kindle. Identify the exact model and generation with Amazon’s Kindle identification guide. Amazon specifically lists it for the Kindle Paperwhite 12th Generation (2024 release), including Kids and Signature variants; other models require their own feature check.
Can I change Kindle warmth in the Kindle phone or tablet app?
Amazon’s app instructions document an in-book path of tap the top center > Aa > Screen Brightness. They do not establish the same Brightness and warmth control found on compatible e-readers, so a missing warmth slider in the app is expected.

How do I turn the Kindle front light completely off?
On compatible e-readers, press and hold the brightness − button. Amazon also documents a long press on + to maximize the light. If your device changes only one step at a time, use the scale; long-press behavior depends on the model.
Is there a recommended Kindle brightness percentage for reading at night?
No. Amazon explains how to adjust the controls but does not prescribe a brightness percentage or warmth value. Lower brightness gradually in a dim room, then test warmth in small increments on a real page until the text is clear and the background is not distracting.
What should I do if tapping the top of a Kindle page does nothing?
Tap once near the top center of an active book page and wait for the toolbar. If it remains hidden, try Home-screen Quick Actions or Settings. PDFs and other fixed-layout formats can behave differently, so test with a standard Kindle book as well.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does the Aa menu control Kindle brightness?
On a dedicated e-reader, Aa is primarily for font and layout options. Use Quick Actions, the reading toolbar’s light controls or Settings > Screen and brightness for brightness and warmth. In the Kindle app, however, brightness is reached through Aa > Screen Brightness.
Will changing warmth make Kindle text larger or change the page color?
No. Warmth changes the front light’s color appearance, making it more amber or more white. Font size, typeface, spacing, margins and related layout controls remain in the Aa text settings.
The Bottom Line
For a dedicated Kindle, swipe down for Quick Actions or tap the top of an open book, then adjust the brightness scale or the +/− buttons. On a compatible model, use Settings > Screen and brightness > Brightness and warmth for color tone. In the Kindle app, use an open book’s top-center tap > Aa > Screen Brightness. If warmth is missing, identify the exact model before troubleshooting; the feature is not universal.
