On PS5, adjust horror games in three places: Settings > Accessibility for console-wide tools, Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets for starting preferences, and the individual game’s own Settings, Accessibility, Gameplay, Controls, Audio, Display, or Difficulty menus for the choices that actually affect play. A preset is only a preference; the game’s implementation takes precedence.

Use the smallest change that removes your specific barrier—captions for spoken clues, visual indicators for sound-dependent information, remapping or simplified inputs for motor demands, and difficulty or combat assists for challenge. The exact controls differ by game and version, so confirm them in the title’s menus.

Console accessibility Settings > Accessibility Controller behavior, display and text options, screen reader, closed captions, chat transcription, mono audio and zoom. Only supported console functions and compatible games respond. A documented console haptic option, for example, concerns navigating the console and is not a promise that every game’s haptics change.
Game Presets Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets Default difficulty, performance or resolution mode, first- and third-person movement behavior, and subtitles and audio preferences. Presets apply to PS5 games only, only when a game exposes the relevant option, and may not apply to every title.
Game options Inside the game’s menus, commonly Settings, Accessibility, Gameplay, Controls, Audio, Display or Difficulty The title’s real difficulty model, assists, remapping, captions, audio cues, camera behavior, motion controls and encounter-specific options. There is no universal horror-game menu layout. Names, availability and whether an option can be changed mid-playthrough are title- and version-dependent.

If a Game Preset appears to do nothing, that usually means the game does not support that preset, the title is a PS4 version, or its own menu has a separate setting that overrides the preference.

Step 1: open PS5 accessibility settings

  1. From the PS5 home screen, select the Settings gear.
  2. Choose Accessibility.
  3. Open the category that matches the barrier: controllers, display and text, screen reader, closed captions, chat transcription, or audio.
  4. Change one or two settings, launch the game, and test them in a safe area before changing more.

You can add Accessibility to the Control Centre for faster access: press the PS button, choose the Control Centre customization option, and add Accessibility if it is not already shown. The exact icon arrangement can vary with system software, but the full settings path remains Settings > Accessibility.

Controller and input changes

Use the controller section when the difficulty is physical rather than strategic. Options documented by PlayStation include controller-related behavior and other system controls. They do not automatically create a remapping scheme inside a game that has no support for one. If a title requires a particular hold, stick motion or button combination, look for remapping, toggle controls, simplified inputs or an alternate control scheme in that title’s own menu.

Display, text and zoom

Display and text options can improve legibility across supported console interfaces. For the documented zoom tool, the path is Settings > Accessibility > Display and Sound > Zoom. Zoom has context limitations: the magnified area may not follow movement during gameplay, and it should not be presented as a complete in-game magnifier. A game’s own subtitle size, contrast, background and HUD settings are usually more useful for reading clues while moving.

Screen reader, captions and audio

Screen reader, closed captions, chat transcription and mono-audio tools address information that would otherwise be delivered through one channel. Enable only what you need, because a game may also provide its own narration, speaker labels, directional indicators or audio-mix controls. If both the console and game offer a similar feature, test them together; two layers can produce duplicate speech or overlapping captions.

Step 2: set a sensible Game Preset

  1. Open Settings from the home screen.
  2. Select Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
  3. Choose Game Presets.
  4. Set the preferences you want for supported PS5 games, then check each game’s options after launch.

Documented preset categories include:

  • Difficulty: a preferred starting level when the game exposes compatible difficulty choices.
  • Performance or Resolution Mode: a preference for smoother performance or higher visual resolution when the title offers those modes.
  • First-Person and Third-Person View Movement: camera behavior preferences where supported.
  • Subtitles and Audio: subtitle and related audio defaults when the game recognizes them.

Sony states that Game Presets apply only to PS5 games and that some preset choices may not apply to every game. Treat them as starting preferences, not forced overrides. A horror title can ignore a preset entirely, expose only some of its categories, or provide a more detailed control inside its own menu.

Step 3: inspect the game’s accessibility listing

  1. From Games home, select PlayStation Store.
  2. Open the game’s hub.
  3. Open the side panel, or press Triangle when that shortcut is shown.
  4. Review the listed accessibility features or Accessibility Tags.

Tags can describe visual and audio settings, DualSense options, difficulty settings and communication features. They are a preview of developer-provided support, not a guarantee that every tag exists for every edition, that every option is available during play, or that a game has tags at all.

After checking the listing, open the game and inspect its own menus. Look under Settings, Accessibility, Gameplay, Controls, Audio, Display and Difficulty. Some games put input options under Controls, caption presentation under Audio or Display, and encounter assists under Accessibility or Gameplay. If an option is missing, check that you installed the PS5 version and that the game is updated; do not assume a console setting can substitute for a title-specific control.

Barrier or preference Look for in the game What to test
Dialogue, footsteps or other information is hard to hear Subtitle size, contrast and background; speaker labels; visual sound indicators; audio-mix controls; mono audio. Play a quiet section and verify that captions identify important sounds, not just dialogue.
Important information is visual Audio cues, screen-reader or text-to-speech support, spoken menu text, high-contrast or enlarged text. Navigate a menu and a gameplay scene without relying on a small visual prompt.
Rapid or simultaneous presses are difficult Simplified or skippable Quick Time Events, hold-to-toggle choices, remapping, reduced motion or alternate controls. Trigger a tutorial or low-risk interaction before entering a timed encounter.
Motion, touch, vibration or adaptive triggers are uncomfortable Separate switches for motion controls, touch controls, controller vibration and adaptive trigger effects. Disable one effect at a time so you can identify which change helps.
Combat is too demanding Difficulty levels, custom challenge sliders, enemy perception or accuracy changes, aim or dodge assists, stealth and resource settings. Use a short encounter to check whether the assist changes the specific demand rather than lowering every aspect of the game.
Camera movement causes discomfort First- or third-person movement behavior, camera sensitivity, inversion, field of view, motion blur or camera shake controls. Test a slow walk and a turn before resuming a long chase or combat sequence.

These are categories to search for, not a promise that every horror game includes them. The examples below show how different two supported titles can be.

Example: The Last of Us Part II

Naughty Dog’s official accessibility documentation describes more than 60 accessibility settings and three starting presets focused on vision, hearing and motor accessibility. It also says trophies are not limited by difficulty. The exact feature set can depend on the edition and update; the documentation notes additions in Grounded Update Version 1.05, and some features require an internet connection and PlayStation Network account.

Difficulty and granular challenge controls

The standard challenge levels listed are Very Light, Light, Moderate, Hard and Survivor, with Custom available. Custom settings separate several dimensions instead of treating difficulty as one slider:

  • Overall challenge.
  • Player vulnerability and effectiveness.
  • Enemy strength, perception and accuracy.
  • Ally effectiveness.
  • Stealth demands.
  • Resource availability.

This lets you preserve exploration and scarcity while reducing only the part of combat that blocks progress, or do the reverse for a more demanding run. Some assists can significantly alter gameplay and may be unavailable during particular encounters, so check the option’s description and test it before relying on it in a set piece.

Information and motor examples

  • Text-to-speech: reads supported on-screen text and menus.
  • Traversal and combat audio cues: provide non-visual signals for supported actions and threats.
  • Subtitle controls: adjust size and background presentation.
  • Awareness indicators: communicate relevant enemy or stealth information visually.
  • Combat assists: examples include reduced enemy perception, reduced enemy accuracy, enhanced dodge and slow motion.

Naughty Dog’s guidance is explicit: “Naughty Dog encourages everyone to take advantage of these features to create a gameplay experience that’s right for them.” That statement describes this game’s design, not a universal PS5 capability.

Example: Until Dawn on PS5

PlayStation describes Until Dawn as an interactive, narrative-driven slasher-horror experience. Its PS5 feature information lists adjustable difficulty, simplified Quick Time Events, customizable controls, control and tutorial reminders and other accessibility features.

The listed access options indicate that play can avoid rapid button presses, simultaneous presses, motion controls, touch controls, controller vibration and adaptive-trigger effects. This is a useful reminder that a narrative horror game may let you remove a specific input demand without selecting an easier global difficulty. Open the title’s own settings and confirm which choices are available in your installed version; these controls are not evidence that every horror game offers the same switches.

Axis Questions to ask Why it matters
Challenge control Are there fixed levels, a custom mode, separate player and enemy settings, or encounter assists? A single Easy option may not address a specific stealth, aiming or timing barrier.
Input demands Can you remap controls or simplify rapid and simultaneous presses? Can you turn off motion, touch, vibration and adaptive triggers? Input flexibility determines whether a difficult action can be replaced rather than merely repeated.
Information channels Are subtitles adjustable? Are speakers and important sounds identified? Is there text-to-speech, a screen reader path or a visual awareness cue? Critical clues should be available through a channel you can reliably use.
Scope and limits Is the feature on the PS5 version, a console-wide setting or a particular update? Does it work during every encounter? Version and encounter limits prevent surprises after you start a playthrough.

Fixes when a setting does not work

The preset did not change the game

  • Confirm you are running the PS5 version, not a PS4 application.
  • Check whether the game offers that category at all.
  • Open the game’s own menu and set the value there.
  • Close and relaunch the title if it only reads preferences at startup.

You cannot find an accessibility menu

Search Settings, Gameplay, Controls, Audio and Display individually. Some developers place accessibility options in those sections instead of using a menu named Accessibility. Review the game’s PlayStation Store hub for listed tags, but remember that a listing may omit features or differ by edition.

An option is unavailable during an encounter

Some assists are disabled during particular encounters or modes. Return to a safe area, change the setting before the sequence begins, or use the game’s restart/checkpoint flow. Do not assume an unavailable toggle indicates a controller fault.

Captions or speech are hard to follow

Adjust subtitle size, contrast and background in the game first. If the console and game both provide speech or captioning, enable only the layer that gives clear output. For audio information, try mono audio or the game’s mix controls, then test a scene where the relevant cue is known to occur.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Camera or haptics cause discomfort

Turn off motion controls, vibration or adaptive triggers in the game’s own options when available. Then adjust camera movement or sensitivity. The PS5’s documented haptic setting is for navigating the console, so it should not be treated as a universal in-game haptic switch.

Optional hardware for alternate input

Software settings are enough for many players, but Sony’s Access controller for PS5 is an optional configurable controller kit designed to help players with disabilities play more comfortably. Sony describes use in different orientations, on a flat surface or attached to an AMPS-pattern mount. It is not required to change difficulty or accessibility settings, and its suitability depends on the player’s needs and the specific game’s controls.

A repeatable setup checklist

  1. Identify the barrier: information, input, camera comfort or challenge.
  2. Open Settings > Accessibility and enable only the console tools relevant to that barrier.
  3. Set a Game Preset for a useful starting preference, knowing it may not apply.
  4. Check the game’s Store hub and Accessibility Tags, if present.
  5. Open the title’s own Settings, Accessibility, Gameplay, Controls, Audio, Display and Difficulty menus.
  6. Change one setting at a time and test it in a safe section.
  7. Before a long session, verify that the setting remains active after loading a save, entering combat and reaching a scripted sequence.
