Adjust glasses by identifying the symptom first, then making one small, reversible change that matches the frame construction. Adjustable metal nose pads can be moved slightly closer or farther apart; plastic frames are usually refined at the temple tips. Put the glasses on and reassess after every change. Do not use heat, force a hinge or bridge, or keep bending a frame when vision remains blurry. An optician should handle delicate frames, persistent discomfort, crooked alignment, or unclear vision.
A comfortable frame sits level and secure without pinching the bridge of your nose, squeezing your temples, or pressing painfully behind your ears. The lenses must also remain in the intended position relative to your pupils. A physical adjustment can improve lens placement, but it cannot substitute for checking the prescription or lens measurements when vision is still unclear.
What a properly fitted pair of glasses should feel like
Fit is more than stopping a frame from sliding. A dispenser checks how the frame contacts your nose, temples and ears, whether it sits level, and whether the lenses stay at the correct height and distance from your eyes.
- Secure bridge contact: The bridge or nose pads should support the frame without a sharp pressure point or a constant urge to push it back up.
- Level front: The top or lower edge should not visibly tilt to one side when your head is in a natural position.
- Temples that follow your head: The side pieces should rest along the sides of your head rather than clamp tightly or flare away.
- Comfort behind the ears: Temple tips should follow the ear contour without digging into the skin.
- Correct lens position: Your pupils should remain in the intended areas of the lenses. Pupil height and pupillary distance are part of the optical fit, not merely cosmetic details.
The U.S. Navy Medicine/NORA fitting guide states: “Proper frame adjustment, precise pupil heights and pupillary distance measurements are essential in order to ensure good performance and easy adaptation.” That is why comfort and visual clarity need to be assessed separately.

Start with the symptom, not the bend
Different complaints point to different parts of a frame. Use the table to decide whether a minor home adjustment is reasonable or whether professional fitting is the safer route.
| What you notice | First checks | Possible minor action | Stop and seek help when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glasses keep sliding down | Check bridge stability, nose-pad contact and whether the temple tips stay behind your ears. | On adjustable metal pads, bring the pads slightly closer. On plastic frames, make a small change at the temple tips. | The frame still slides, the bridge is damaged, or repeated changes are needed. |
| Too tight on your temples | Look for side pressure and temples that do not follow your head contour. | Do not force the front. Have an optician personalize the temple bend. | You feel pain, a headache, skin marks, or the frame resists movement. |
| Pressure behind your ears | Inspect where each temple tip contacts the ear and whether one side is bent differently. | Only a very small temple-tip refinement is appropriate for a frame designed to allow it. | The tip digs in, the material is brittle, or discomfort persists. |
| Frame sits crooked | Put it on normally and identify which side appears high or low. | Avoid twisting the front or making several compensating bends. | It remains crooked, has been sat on or dropped, or the cause is not obvious. |
| Vision stays blurry | Clean both lenses and confirm the frame is sitting normally. | Do not keep bending the frame to chase clarity. | An optician or prescriber should check lens position, pupil height and the prescription. |
Identify your frame before touching it
Adjustable metal nose pads
Small pads mounted on metal arms can usually be moved a limited amount. They are the most appropriate place to address a loose bridge when the pads are visibly misaligned or too far apart. The arms themselves are delicate; changing their shape is different from gently repositioning the pad and is best left to an optician.
Plastic frames without separate pads
Many plastic frames rely on the molded bridge and the temple tips for stability. There is no independent nose pad to reposition. Consumer fitting guidance instead describes making a small change at the temple tips, then checking the result while wearing the frame. Plastic does not respond like a flexible metal pad arm, so stop rather than escalating force.
Frames with hinges, coatings or fragile finishes
A hinge, bridge, decorative joint or lens coating can be damaged by pressure or heat. If you cannot clearly identify which component is designed to move, treat the frame as delicate and use an optician.

Prepare for a safe, controlled adjustment
- Work in good light over a clear surface. A dropped screw or a cracked part is easier to notice before it disappears.
- Wash and dry your hands. This reduces fingerprints on lenses and gives you a secure grip on the frame.
- Clean the lenses first. Smudges can feel like blur and may lead you to make an unnecessary mechanical change.
- Inspect both sides. Compare pad spacing, temple position and the way the frame rests on a flat surface, without pressing it down.
- Decide on one target. For example, address sliding at the bridge before attempting to correct a tilt.
- Make the smallest change possible, then put the glasses on. Test normal head movement and look through the lenses before deciding whether another change is needed.
A precision screwdriver or basic eyeglass repair kit is useful for tightening a loose screw. It is not a solution for a wrong prescription, poor lens placement or a frame that needs reshaping.
How to stop glasses from sliding down
When the frame has adjustable metal pads
- Put the glasses on and note whether both pads contact your nose evenly.
- Remove the glasses and hold the frame by a sturdy area, not by a lens or a thin pad arm.
- Move each pad a very small amount toward a more secure bridge position. Keep the two sides as symmetrical as possible.
- Put the glasses on again. Check whether the bridge feels secure without creating a concentrated pressure point.
- If the frame still slides, stop rather than repeatedly moving the arms. An optician can assess pad angle, arm alignment and the rest of the frame together.
The goal is stable contact, not maximum pressure. A pad that is forced too close can become painful and may leave the frame sitting at the wrong height.
When the frame is plastic
- Confirm that the bridge is clean and that the frame is not being pushed down by hair, a hat or another object.
- Check the temple tips behind your ears. If they are not following the ear contour, a small tip adjustment may improve retention.
- Change one side only slightly, then wear the frame and compare both sides.
- Stop immediately if the plastic whitens, creaks, cracks or springs back strongly.
Plastic frames are construction-specific. If a tip needs more than a minor refinement, professional equipment and a controlled assessment are safer than continued home bending.

Relieve pressure at the temples or ears
Pressure usually means the side pieces are too tight, their bend does not follow your head, or the behind-the-ear contour is wrong. The correct adjustment is not always the opposite of a sliding adjustment; changing one area can alter the frame’s level and lens position.

- Wear the glasses for several minutes and identify the exact pressure point on each side.
- Look straight ahead in a mirror. Note whether one temple presses more than the other or whether both sides clamp.
- Do not twist the front of the frame to create relief. The front controls lens alignment and can become permanently distorted.
- For a minor, frame-designed temple-tip change, make one small adjustment and test. Leave substantial temple spreading, hinge work and changes to the main bend to an optician.
- Stop if pain, numbness, a persistent mark or worsening crookedness develops.
Professional fitting guidance calls for temples to follow the head and ear contour without being too tight. An optician can heat and shape compatible materials using controlled methods, while keeping heat away from lenses and coatings.
Correcting a crooked frame
A crooked appearance can come from a tilted front, unequal temple bends, uneven nose-pad placement or a damaged hinge. Trying to fix all of these by twisting one corner often creates a second problem.
- Put the glasses on naturally; do not raise or lower your head to make them look level.
- Describe the symptom precisely: for example, “the right side sits high” or “the left lens is farther from my cheek.”
- Remove the glasses and check for obvious damage such as a bent hinge, loose screw or displaced pad.
- If a screw is visibly loose, use a correctly sized precision screwdriver with light pressure. Do not tighten until the hinge binds.
- For a tilted front or unequal temple bend, arrange an optician adjustment instead of making several compensating bends.
Frame alignment is a complete fitting task. A professional can check the front, both temples, pad placement and lens position as one system.

Why heat and force are risky
Heat can deform frames, damage lens coatings and affect materials that appear stable. The reviewed consumer guidance specifically cautions against hot water and a hair dryer. Never use boiling water, and keep any heat source away from the lenses and their coatings.

- Do not force a hinge, bridge or nose-pad arm.
- Do not grip a lens to apply leverage.
- Do not make a series of large bends because the first small change did not solve the problem.
- Stop when the frame resists, cracks, creaks, changes color or becomes less comfortable.
- Keep adjustments reversible; a frame that has been over-bent may not return to its original alignment.
If the frame needs heat to move, or if you are unsure which material you have, let an optician handle it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a fit problem is actually a vision problem
Physical comfort and optical clarity overlap but are not interchangeable. A frame that sits too low or too far to one side can place your pupils away from the intended lens measurements. Cleaning and normalizing the frame position are reasonable first checks; repeated bending is not.
Blur that appears immediately
Clean both lenses, check for a film or obvious damage, and put the glasses on in their normal position. If one lens remains unclear, or the blur changes when you move the frame, have an optician check lens position and pupil height.
Blur after an adjustment
Undo the last change if it can be reversed safely, then compare the frame’s level and bridge contact. Do not keep experimenting if clarity does not return. The dispenser or prescriber may need to verify pupillary distance, pupil height, lens power and whether the frame is suitable for those measurements.

Persistent blur with a comfortable frame
A comfortable frame can still contain an incorrect prescription, a lens measurement issue or a lens defect. An optician or the prescribing professional must evaluate that; a nose-pad or temple adjustment cannot correct optical power.
When to book an optician instead of adjusting at home
- The frame is cracked, brittle, badly twisted or visibly damaged.
- The nose-pad arm, hinge or bridge needs reshaping.
- One side remains high after a single small correction.
- Temples cause pain, headaches, numbness or persistent pressure.
- The frame repeatedly slides despite a reasonable bridge and temple fit.
- Vision is blurry, distorted or different between the two eyes after cleaning and normal positioning.
- You cannot identify the frame material or the part intended to move.
- The glasses are new and do not feel right; the dispensing office can check fit and lens measurements as part of delivery.
Tell the optician exactly what happens while wearing the frame and which side is affected. That information helps them distinguish alignment, pad placement, temple contour and lens-position issues.
A practical decision path
- Is the complaint physical comfort? Identify sliding, pressure or tilt. If yes, inspect the bridge, pads, temples and ears.
- Is there an adjustable part? Metal nose pads may permit a tiny pad change; plastic frames may permit a tiny temple-tip change. If not, use an optician.
- Can the change be made without heat or force? If not, stop and arrange professional service.
- Did one small change improve the symptom? Keep it and monitor comfort through normal movement. If not, do not stack additional bends.
- Is vision still unclear? Clean the lenses and restore a normal frame position once. Persistent blur requires an optical check, not more bending.
After the adjustment: verify fit and adaptation
Walk, look down briefly and turn your head as you normally would. The frame should remain level and secure without a new pressure point. Check each eye through the intended lens area and compare clarity with the frame sitting naturally. If comfort improves but the frame now sits noticeably higher, lower, or closer on one side, stop and have the full fit assessed.
