If you’re asking, “How do I change my mouse DPI without messing up my aim?” record your current DPI and game sensitivity first, then change only one setting at a time. If you’re wondering, “What DPI and sensitivity should I use?” there is no universal best value established by the available manufacturer guidance. Keep a setting that feels controlled, and use the same practice drill to judge any adjustment before taking it into a match.
What DPI and in-game sensitivity each control
DPI describes how far a pointer moves for a given physical mouse movement: at a higher DPI, the cursor moves farther for the same movement. That description concerns cursor movement; a game may handle mouse input differently depending on its settings and input path. A DPI number by itself therefore does not tell you how sensitive your aim will feel in a particular game. Razer’s Naga V2 HyperSpeed guide explains DPI as a sensitivity setting, but it is product documentation, not a recommendation for every game or player.
In-game sensitivity is a separate control. Changing it while leaving DPI alone alters the game’s response without also changing the mouse’s DPI setting. Some games also have separate scoped or aim-down-sights (ADS) sensitivity values, so include those in your baseline if you use them. The exact controls and the way a game applies input vary; do not assume a desktop cursor setting describes every in-game behavior.
It helps to think of these as two parts of the setup rather than interchangeable labels. DPI is selected through the mouse or its software, while in-game sensitivity is selected in that game’s settings. If you move the mouse the same physical distance but change DPI, the desktop cursor generally travels farther or less far; if you change in-game sensitivity, you are changing the game’s response to mouse input. The practical result depends on the game and its input handling, so evaluate the setting where you use it.

Some mice let you cycle between several DPI levels with a button. That can be useful to know about, but it also creates a possible source of surprise: a button press may select a different stage than the one you intended to use. A temporary low-DPI “shift” assignment, where a model supports it, is another control rather than a new game sensitivity. Keep track of whether you are testing a permanent DPI setting or a temporary button behavior.
What DPI and sensitivity should you use?
Use the values you can control consistently as your starting point; the cited manufacturer material does not establish a universally optimal DPI or sensitivity combination. Rather than copying a number without context, decide whether your current aim feels too fast, too slow, or comfortable, and make a small, reversible change to the relevant setting.
If the aim feels too fast or slow but your mouse DPI is otherwise working as expected, begin by adjusting the game’s sensitivity while holding DPI steady. If your specific goal is to change mouse DPI, adjust DPI and hold the game setting fixed for the first comparison. This keeps the two controls distinct and makes the result easier to interpret.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →There is no supported one-size-fits-all number here because a value only has meaning in context: the game, its sensitivity scale, the mouse’s active DPI, and any separate scoped or ADS settings all matter. A number that feels controlled to one player may feel too quick or too slow to another. The useful question is not whether a setting is popular, but whether you can make familiar turns and small corrections comfortably and repeatably in your own game.
If you change DPI but want to preserve a similar overall feel, adjust the game sensitivity only if the game exposes the relevant controls and you have a reliable conversion method for that game. Do not assume that multiplying or dividing values by a familiar-looking ratio will preserve aim across different games or input paths. If you cannot verify a conversion, keep the game setting fixed for your first test and make small changes by feel instead. This is slower than relying on a known conversion, but it keeps the comparison understandable and reversible.
Record your baseline before changing anything
Write down the active DPI, the in-game sensitivity, and any separate scoped or ADS sensitivity that matters in your game. Also note which mouse profile is selected and, if applicable, which DPI stage or button assignment is active. A profile or stage change can make the mouse feel different even if you have not deliberately altered the value you meant to tune.

Check the documentation or support page for your exact mouse model to find its DPI controls and understand whether its settings are tied to software, onboard controls, or profiles. Names and available values differ by model. For example, Logitech’s G203 configuration instructions describe up to five DPI levels and the option to assign a Shift control for temporarily using a lower DPI. Those are capabilities of that model and setup, not promises about every gaming mouse. Razer also provides model-related guidance for manually changing DPI on a Razer mouse.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a useful record, include enough detail to recreate the setup rather than writing down a single number. Note the game and the sensitivity values that matter in it, the mouse profile, and the active DPI stage. If you are also checking Windows pointer precision, note whether it is on or off. You do not need to record every mouse option if it is not part of the test, but recording the settings you might accidentally change saves time when you want to revert.
You do not need to buy a new mouse just to tune sensitivity if your current mouse already lets you adjust DPI or if you can get the feel you want using in-game sensitivity. A mouse with adjustable DPI is relevant only when your current device lacks a usable adjustment or you want convenient onboard controls.
Adjust DPI or sensitivity without losing your reference point
- Save the baseline. Record the active mouse DPI, game sensitivity, relevant scoped or ADS values, and mouse profile. Take a screenshot or write the values down so you can restore them precisely.
- Choose one control. For a general aim-speed adjustment, start with in-game sensitivity and leave DPI unchanged. To change the mouse’s DPI, use the hardware controls or manufacturer software for your model and leave game sensitivity unchanged for that test.
- Make one small change. Do not change DPI, game sensitivity, Windows pointer settings, and polling rate together. The point of a controlled adjustment is to know which change affected the feel; no specific step size is established by the cited sources, so avoid treating a particular increment as universally right.
- Repeat the same practice movement. Use the same game, practice environment, and familiar movement or target-tracking drill before and after the change. Compare how much physical mouse movement you need for the same in-game turn, whether fine control feels comfortable, and whether you can repeat the familiar movement. These are practical comparison checks, not published performance measurements.
- Check secondary aim controls. If the game has independent scoped or ADS sensitivity, assess those controls too. A change that feels comfortable in ordinary movement may not feel right when aiming through a scope.
- Keep or revert. Keep the new value only if it feels controlled in the repeatable practice scenario. If it does not, restore the recorded value before trying another adjustment. Tune outside a competitive match rather than making a series of rushed changes during play.
When using mouse software or onboard buttons, verify that the change actually took effect before evaluating it. Some mice store multiple stages, and the displayed or selected stage may not be the one currently active. If you switch a setting in software, check that the intended profile is selected; if you use a DPI button, confirm which stage it selects. Otherwise, you may think you are comparing two values when you are actually still using the baseline—or comparing against an unintended stage.
Give each test the same conditions. Use the same game and practice area, keep the mouse profile unchanged, and repeat the same type of turn or tracking movement. If you change several things between attempts, it becomes difficult to tell whether the result came from DPI, sensitivity, an ADS setting, or an unrelated profile change. A controlled test does not guarantee better aim; it simply gives you a clearer basis for deciding whether a setting suits you.
Which setting should you change first?
| What you want to change | First setting to adjust | Hold steady during the test |
|---|---|---|
| Aim feels too fast or too slow in one game | That game’s sensitivity | Mouse DPI, Windows pointer settings, and polling rate |
| You specifically want a different mouse DPI | DPI through the mouse’s available hardware control or manufacturer software | Game sensitivity and Windows pointer settings |
| Scoped or ADS aiming feels different from ordinary aim | The game’s separate scoped or ADS sensitivity, if available | DPI and unrelated game controls |
| Pointer movement seems inconsistent unexpectedly | Verify active mouse profile and DPI stage before making a new sensitivity adjustment | Other tuning variables until the unexpected behavior is understood |
This table is a decision aid, not a claim that every game exposes each control or handles input in the same way. If a game does not offer a separate scoped or ADS control, there is no such value to tune in that game.

Use the symptom to choose the first control, not a desire to change everything at once. If ordinary aiming feels wrong in one game, test that game’s sensitivity first. If the desktop cursor and the mouse’s configured DPI are what you intended to change, use the mouse’s own control. If ordinary aim feels familiar but scoped movement does not, look for a separate scoped or ADS control instead of changing the DPI that affects the rest of the setup.
Understand Windows pointer precision and game behavior
Windows includes an “Enhance pointer precision” option. Logitech Support’s G203 setup guidance calls it “Acceleration (Enhance Pointer Precision)” and says: “TIP: For gaming accuracy, we recommend leaving this unchecked, but you can enable it if you prefer the feel of default Windows acceleration.” That is Logitech’s recommendation in the context of its configuration instructions—not proof that the option affects every game identically or that every player will prefer it unchecked. Microsoft’s mouse settings reference covers Windows mouse settings.
If pointer behavior seems inconsistent, check whether the option is enabled and note its state before changing it. Treat it as a separate variable from DPI and in-game sensitivity: changing it during the same test makes the result harder to diagnose. The available guidance does not establish exactly how every game handles this Windows option, so compare behavior in the game you actually play rather than assuming desktop cursor behavior is conclusive.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not treat this Windows option as a universal fix for aim problems. It is worth checking when you are troubleshooting unexpected pointer behavior, but a game’s handling of input can differ from desktop cursor movement. If you decide to change the option, change only that setting, test in the same environment, and restore its previous state if the result is not what you want. Logitech’s advice is a recommendation for gaming accuracy in the G203 setup context, while its own wording also acknowledges that a player may prefer the feel of Windows acceleration.
Why polling rate is a separate decision
Polling rate is how often the computer receives mouse status information, according to the Razer manual. It is not the DPI value and is not another name for game sensitivity. Keep polling rate fixed while tuning aim; changing it at the same time would add another variable to the comparison. Investigate polling rate separately only if the problem you are trying to solve concerns input reporting or compatibility. The cited manual explains the term but does not provide a universal polling-rate recommendation or a performance figure that would justify changing it for everyone.
In practical terms, polling rate belongs in a different troubleshooting question: how often the mouse reports information to the computer, not how far the pointer moves for a given physical movement. If your only goal is to make aim feel slower or faster, start with the controls that directly describe DPI and in-game sensitivity. Changing reporting frequency at the same time muddies that test and provides no clear way to attribute a difference in feel.

Troubleshoot an unexpected change in feel
- The mouse suddenly feels much faster or slower: Confirm the selected mouse profile and active DPI stage. A model may have multiple DPI levels, and a button or profile change can select a different one.
- Desktop movement and game aim do not seem to match: Do not assume the game applies Windows pointer behavior in the same way as the desktop. Check the game’s own sensitivity setting and compare in a repeatable in-game scenario.
- Movement feels inconsistent after changing several options: Restore the recorded values, then test one control at a time. Keep polling rate and pointer-precision state steady during the sensitivity comparison.
- You cannot find the same DPI options shown in a guide: Check instructions for your exact mouse model and software. Logitech’s G203 page is a model-specific example, while button names and available settings can differ elsewhere.
- Tracking behavior remains inconsistent: Logitech has separate guidance on inconsistent tracking between gaming mouse performance and endurance modes. Its troubleshooting article also mentions Enhance Pointer Precision; use model-specific support rather than assuming the cause is sensitivity.
Before lowering or raising sensitivity to compensate for a sudden change, check whether something else changed first. A different mouse profile, active DPI stage, or button assignment can change the feel without any change to the game’s sensitivity value. Confirm the actual active settings, then return to the recorded baseline if needed. This avoids tuning around an accidental profile or stage switch.
If your mouse has performance and endurance modes and tracking seems inconsistent, consult the relevant model support material rather than assuming that another DPI adjustment will solve it. Logitech’s troubleshooting guidance specifically discusses inconsistent tracking behavior between those modes and also mentions Enhance Pointer Precision. The appropriate next step depends on your device and setup; the symptom alone does not establish that sensitivity is the cause.
If you cannot find the controls shown in an online guide, do not assume your mouse is broken or that the guide applies to it. The G203 instructions describe a particular mouse and software setup; other models may use different button names, profiles, or available DPI options. Look up the exact model’s support instructions, and distinguish between a setting that the mouse does not offer and one that is present under a different control or software menu.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make the comparison fair
A useful before-and-after check holds the game, mouse profile, and practice scenario constant. Pay attention to four things: how much physical movement produces the same in-game turn, whether small corrections feel manageable, whether you can repeat a familiar movement, and whether scoped or ADS aiming remains comfortable. These criteria help you decide whether a setting suits your control; they are not measured aim scores or a promise of improved performance.
Keep the comparison focused on control and comfort rather than trying to declare a winner after one difficult shot or one unusually easy practice attempt. Repeat the same movement under the same conditions, and give yourself a chance to judge the setting in the context where you play. If you are comparing configurations, do not change the game, profile, practice scenario, or unrelated mouse controls between them.

Frequently asked questions
Can I change DPI without changing my aim sensitivity?
DPI and in-game sensitivity are separate controls, but changing DPI can change how mouse movement feels in a game. To test a new DPI, keep the game setting fixed at first. If you want to compensate and preserve a similar feel, do so only when the game’s controls and a reliable conversion method are known; otherwise make small, reversible adjustments and judge them in a consistent practice scenario.
Should I change mouse DPI or game sensitivity first?
If aim simply feels too fast or too slow in one game, start with that game’s sensitivity and hold DPI steady. Change DPI first when your goal is specifically to alter the mouse’s DPI, then keep game sensitivity unchanged during the initial comparison. This helps identify which control changed the result.
What is the best DPI for gaming?
The cited manufacturer material does not establish a universally best DPI or sensitivity combination. Start from a value you can control, record it, and adjust incrementally based on repeatable movement and comfort in your own game. Avoid treating a number without its game, sensitivity settings, and mouse profile as a complete recommendation.
Does Windows Enhance pointer precision affect every game?
The available manufacturer guidance does not establish how every game handles this Windows setting. Logitech Support recommends leaving it unchecked for gaming accuracy in its G203 configuration instructions, while noting that a player may prefer the feel of default Windows acceleration. Check its state when troubleshooting, change it separately, and test in the game you play rather than assuming desktop behavior answers the question.
Will changing polling rate make my aim more accurate?
Polling rate describes how often the computer receives mouse status information; it is separate from DPI and in-game sensitivity. The cited product documentation does not establish a universal polling-rate recommendation or a performance figure that shows it will improve aim for every player. Keep it fixed while tuning sensitivity and investigate it separately only if your concern is reporting or compatibility.
Do I need a new mouse to adjust DPI?
Not if your current mouse already exposes a usable DPI control, or if changing in-game sensitivity gives you the feel you want. Mouse features vary by model. Check its support instructions before shopping; adjustable DPI may be useful if your current device lacks an appropriate adjustment or you want convenient onboard controls, but a purchase is not required just to begin tuning.
Why did my mouse suddenly feel faster even though I did not change game sensitivity?
Check the active mouse profile and DPI stage, including whether a button or temporary Shift assignment selected another level. Also check whether Windows pointer precision or another setting changed. Restore your recorded setup if necessary, then test one variable at a time rather than making several compensating changes.
