On a Galaxy Z Fold, start with Settings → Sounds and vibration. Use the volume keys and expand the on-screen volume panel to select the sound type you actually want to change. For tonal changes, open Sound quality and effects; to send one app to a different output, use Separate app sound. For headphone channel behavior, use Settings → Accessibility → Hearing enhancements. The Galaxy Z Fold6 manual documents these paths, but menu names and available features can differ by Fold model, One UI release and connected audio equipment.
Choose the control that matches the problem
Galaxy sound settings perform different jobs. A ringtone slider does not substitute for the media slider, an equalizer does not select a Bluetooth destination, and headphone balance controls do not tune the built-in loudspeaker. Identify the result you need before changing a setting.

Adjust media, ringtone and other sound levels
The volume keys open a pop-up showing the current sound type and its level. Samsung’s general Galaxy instructions say that expanding this pop-up reveals sliders for the other sound types. This is the quickest way to avoid changing the wrong level.

- Press either physical volume key.
- Read the sound type shown beside the active slider. If media is playing, the panel may be showing media volume; do not assume it is the ringtone level.
- Tap the expand control on the volume pop-up.
- Drag the slider for the sound type you need: media, ringtone, notifications or system sounds.
- Play the relevant content or trigger the relevant alert to check the result.
If a video or song is too quiet, adjust Media. If incoming calls are too quiet, adjust Ringtone. Notification and system sounds have their own levels. Keeping these categories separate prevents a louder ringtone from masking an unchanged media setting.

Use the full Sounds and vibration page
Open Settings → Sounds and vibration when you want to inspect the sound controls in one place rather than changing the currently active slider. The exact labels can vary between One UI versions, so follow the sound-type names displayed on your Fold instead of expecting every generation to present an identical screen.
Check the active output before judging the level
A volume change only helps the output that is currently carrying the sound. Before deciding that the Fold’s speaker is too quiet, check whether the media is playing through the phone or through a connected accessory. If you intentionally routed an app elsewhere, test that destination separately. This avoids raising a phone slider when the app is actually using another device.
Change playback character with Sound quality and effects
On the Galaxy Z Fold6, the playback-processing controls are under Settings → Sounds and vibration → Sound quality and effects. They change how supported audio is rendered; they do not replace the basic volume sliders. Samsung lists the following options on the Fold6 manual’s interface.

Dolby Atmos provides selectable surround-sound modes. Samsung’s broader Galaxy support guidance also describes Dolby Atmos for gaming on supported devices. Choose a mode only when it suits the material: a surround profile can change spaciousness and placement without increasing the underlying media-volume level. If Dolby Atmos or its gaming option is absent, the Fold model or One UI build may not support it.
Equaliser
Equaliser offers genre-oriented presets. Use it when the issue is tonal balance—for example, wanting a different emphasis across bass, midrange or treble—rather than when the output is simply too quiet. The available presets and controls are model-dependent.
Boost dialogue
Boost dialogue raises voices in supported content. Samsung notes that it is unavailable for multichannel audio content, so its absence or lack of effect on a particular film or program does not necessarily indicate a fault. It is a speech-clarity feature, not a universal volume increase.
Loudness normalisation
Loudness normalisation reduces volume differences between pieces of content and automatically raises low-volume content. It is useful when successive tracks or programs vary noticeably in level. Because it changes relative loudness, it is separate from the media slider and should not be treated as a replacement for setting the phone to a comfortable maximum.
Adapt sound
Adapt sound optimizes sound settings for the listener. The choices and setup presented can depend on the Fold model and software version. If the option is not listed, do not infer that another sound menu is missing; check the model and One UI build first.

UHQ upscaler
UHQ upscaler is for music and video when using supported wired or Bluetooth headphones. It is not a setting for the Fold’s built-in loudspeaker. If you are listening through the phone speaker, changing this option should not be expected to alter that output.
Samsung states that some Sound quality and effects features require headphones and that availability depends on the model. Connect the supported headphones before troubleshooting a feature that is greyed out or unavailable, then verify that your Fold exposes the option. Do not treat a missing headphone option as evidence that the phone speaker itself is defective.
Send one app to a different audio device
Separate app sound is the setting to use when one app should play through a different output from the phone’s main audio. The Fold6 manual’s example is Navigation audio remaining on the phone while Music plays through a vehicle’s Bluetooth speaker.

Configure Separate app sound
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds and vibration.
- Tap Separate app sound.
- Turn the feature on.
- Select the multimedia app whose audio you want to route.
- Select the output device for that app.
- Start playback in the selected app and confirm that its sound comes from the chosen device.
The selected destination must differ from the phone’s main output for Separate app sound to work. If you want to use Bluetooth, pair and connect the device first; Samsung’s current support instructions say Bluetooth devices may appear in the picker only while they are connected. A device that is merely saved in Bluetooth history may therefore be absent from the Separate app sound list.
What Separate app sound does—and does not do
This feature routes an app’s media stream. It does not amplify the built-in speaker, raise the phone’s overall volume, or change every app at once. The phone’s main output continues to handle other audio unless you assign those apps separately. If the app or destination is missing, check that the app produces media audio, the alternate device is connected, and the Fold’s model and software support the feature.
Use this control for destination management, not for sound quality. If Music is sent to a vehicle speaker and Navigation remains on the Fold, changing an Equaliser preset affects supported playback processing, while Separate app sound determines where each app’s stream goes. They solve different problems and can be used independently when the model supports both.
Set mono output or left/right balance for headphones
For headphone listening, open Settings → Accessibility → Hearing enhancements. The Fold6 manual describes two relevant controls:

- Mono audio combines stereo sound into one signal played through all headphone speakers. This is useful when you need both channels represented in each side.
- Left/right sound balance shifts the balance toward one headphone channel.
Samsung Electronics states in the Galaxy Z Fold6 user manual: “Mono output combines stereo sound into one signal that is played through all headphone speakers.” These are accessibility channel controls. They should not be presented as equalizer settings for the Fold’s built-in loudspeaker, and they do not select a different output device.

Use Mono audio when a stereo mix is difficult to follow because important information is split between channels. Use the balance control when one headphone side needs more or less signal. If the complaint concerns the phone’s external speakers, return to the sound-level or Sound quality and effects menus instead; Hearing enhancements are not loudspeaker equalization.
Use a practical decision path
When audio is not behaving as expected, classify the symptom before changing several settings at once.
The media is too quiet
- Press a volume key while the media is active.
- Expand the pop-up and raise the Media slider, not Ringtone or Notifications.
- Check the current output destination. If media is being sent to a connected Bluetooth device, verify that device is the intended destination before judging the phone speaker.
- If the level is acceptable but speech is hard to understand, look at Boost dialogue, remembering that it is unavailable for multichannel audio.
The sound is loud enough but has the wrong character
Open Sound quality and effects. Try the relevant Dolby Atmos mode, an Equaliser preset, Loudness normalisation or Adapt sound. Treat UHQ upscaler as a headphone-only option where supported. Change one processing option at a time so you can identify which setting produced the result.
Only one app should use another device
Configure Separate app sound rather than changing the phone’s main output. Connect the Bluetooth device before opening the destination picker, and make sure the chosen destination differs from the main phone output.
The left and right headphone channels do not suit you
Use Accessibility → Hearing enhancements. Choose Mono audio when you need a combined signal in both headphone sides, or adjust Left/right sound balance for an uneven channel preference. These choices affect headphone channel behavior, not the loudspeaker’s overall equalization.
Several apps need different destinations
Start with the app whose media must be separated, then assign it in Separate app sound. Test that app immediately after saving the selection. Because the feature is app-specific, changing a general media slider will not reproduce the same routing behavior, and changing the main output can defeat the intended separation if both destinations become identical.
Troubleshoot missing controls and unexpected results
A menu or option is not present
Do not assume that every Galaxy Z Fold has the Fold6 menu set. The model-specific manual used for these paths is for model SM-F956B, and its document revision is dated 2024-08-14. Samsung’s general support material also warns that availability varies. Check the exact Fold model and One UI software information, then compare the labels shown under Sounds and vibration. A missing Dolby Atmos, Adapt sound, UHQ upscaler or Separate app sound entry may be a support difference rather than a damaged speaker.

Conversely, a control intended for headphones should not be evaluated through the built-in speakers.

A Bluetooth destination is not listed
Open the phone’s Bluetooth controls and make sure the intended device is actively connected, not merely remembered or paired. Return to Separate app sound after the connection is established. Samsung says Bluetooth devices may only be displayed in that selector while connected.
The app still plays through the wrong place
Recheck the app assignment and destination in Separate app sound. The destination must be different from the phone’s main output. Also confirm that you selected the multimedia app itself rather than changing a general volume slider; Separate app sound applies to the selected app’s media stream.
A sound-quality feature appears ineffective
First identify where the audio is playing. UHQ upscaler requires supported wired or Bluetooth headphones, while mono and balance are headphone controls. A feature designed for headphones cannot be used to tune the built-in speaker. For Boost dialogue, test content that is not multichannel, because Samsung lists multichannel audio as unsupported for that control.
The wrong sound category changed
Press a volume key again, expand the panel and read the label beside the slider. Media, ringtone, notifications and system sounds are separate categories. Raise the category that matches the symptom, then test the same kind of audio. This simple check prevents repeated changes to a level that was never responsible for the problem.

Why did changing the ringtone not make my video louder?
Galaxy separates media, ringtone, notification and system sound levels. Press a volume key while the video is playing, expand the pop-up and adjust Media. The ringtone slider controls incoming-call alerts, not ordinary media playback.
Can Separate app sound make the Fold’s built-in speaker louder?
No. Separate app sound routes a selected app’s media to another output. It does not amplify the phone speaker or raise the overall volume. Use the Media slider for level and Sound quality and effects for supported playback processing.

Why can’t I select my Bluetooth speaker in Separate app sound?
Samsung says Bluetooth devices may appear in the selector only while connected. Connect the speaker first, then return to Settings → Sounds and vibration → Separate app sound. The selected destination must also differ from the phone’s main output.
Why is Boost dialogue missing or ineffective?
Boost dialogue is model- and software-dependent, and Samsung lists it as unavailable for multichannel audio content. Check the Fold model and One UI version, then test supported stereo content rather than assuming the speaker has failed.
Does UHQ upscaler change the Fold’s external speakers?
UHQ upscaler is intended for music and video through supported wired or Bluetooth headphones. It is not a built-in-speaker control, so do not expect it to alter playback from the phone’s own loudspeakers.
