On an Android XR headset, start with Quick Settings > Screen brightness for immediate display changes. For visual or hearing accessibility, open Settings > Accessibility. Physical comfort is handled through headset straps and the on-screen lens setup. If you own AI glasses rather than a standalone headset, those menus may not exist: Google describes AI glasses as “Lightweight, companion devices that connect to a primary device, like a smartphone,” so use the paired phone app and your model’s manufacturer instructions.
First identify which Android XR device you have
“Android XR glasses” can describe two different product types. A standalone Android XR headset has its own operating system, display and headset fit controls. AI glasses are lightweight companion devices that connect to a primary device such as a phone and do not run the full operating system. The procedures below are therefore written for Android XR devices and headsets where the documented controls are available; a pair of AI glasses may expose the equivalent settings only through its companion app or connected phone.
Do not assume that glasses have adjustable lenses, a head strap, or an on-device Accessibility menu. Check the exact model name in its companion app, quick-start guide or support page before trying to follow headset instructions. Google’s Android XR Help notes that “Specific navigation and feature names may vary across markets and devices.” A missing option can be a model or regional difference rather than a fault.

Adjust brightness from Quick Settings
Brightness is the quickest comfort change when the image looks too dim or harsh.

- Go to the Android XR device’s Home screen.
- Open Quick Settings.
- Select Screen brightness.
- Move the brightness control until text and images are clear without feeling glaring. Make the change in the lighting where you normally use the device, because a level that feels comfortable in a dark room may look inadequate in daylight.
The Android XR navigation guidance identifies brightness as a Quick Settings function. It does not establish a universal slider design, automatic-brightness behavior, minimum level or maximum level for every device, so do not treat the position of the control as a comparable measurement between models. If Screen brightness is not present, look in the device’s display settings or the paired-device app rather than repeatedly opening unrelated Accessibility pages.
Change visual size, magnification and color accessibility
For persistent readability or visual-comfort needs, open Settings > Accessibility. Google lists several visual controls, but the exact names and navigation can differ by device and market.
Display size and text controls
Use the display-size or text-size controls when interface labels, menus or notifications are physically too small. Increase one setting at a time and check the applications you actually use. Larger text can change wrapping and make a button move, while a larger display scale can reduce how much information fits in view. If a particular app does not respond, it may not support the system scaling behavior.
Magnification
Magnification is intended for content that remains hard to inspect even after increasing display size or text. Turn it on from the Accessibility area, then follow the device’s displayed gesture or activation instructions. Because the activation gesture is not specified uniformly in the Android XR overview, follow the prompt shown on your device rather than assuming a phone gesture will work in a headset. Use magnification briefly for detail work if moving around with a zoomed view makes orientation harder.

Contrast and color controls
Accessibility may include contrast or color adjustments. Choose the control that addresses the problem you are experiencing: stronger contrast can separate text from its background, while a color adjustment can make certain hues easier to distinguish. Review photos, maps and safety-critical interface elements after changing these settings; a change that helps text can make other content look less natural. If the option is absent, that is consistent with Google’s warning that feature availability varies across markets and devices.
Reduce animations
Reduce animations is designed for motion sensitivity. Enable it under Accessibility when supported. The documented description limits the effect to supported apps, so it should not be read as a promise that every transition, scene or system effect will disappear. If motion discomfort continues, lower visual complexity where an individual app offers that choice and take a break rather than relying on this setting alone.
TalkBack and audio descriptions
Google’s accessibility overview also lists TalkBack and audio descriptions. These are separate from brightness or text scaling: TalkBack provides spoken interaction feedback, while audio descriptions add narration for supported visual content. Turn them on only if they match your access needs, and read the confirmation text before accepting because spoken feedback changes how navigation is announced.

Open Settings > Accessibility and look for the hearing-related controls. These options address intelligibility and access; they are not a complete replacement for ordinary media-volume controls.

Live Caption and caption preferences
- Open Settings.
- Select Accessibility.
- Open Live Caption or the device’s caption preferences.
- Choose the available language, then adjust caption text size and style if those controls are shown.
- Play a short sample of the content you use most often and verify that captions are readable without obscuring important visual information.
Language availability and caption behavior can vary by market, device and content. Caption preferences change how text is presented; they do not guarantee transcription for every language, application or audio source.
Mono audio
Enable Mono audio when hearing in both ears is not balanced or when combining channels makes speech easier to follow. Mono sends the left and right content together instead of preserving stereo separation. Music and spatial effects can sound different after the change, so turn it off for content where stereo positioning is important.
Left or right sound balance
Use Left/right sound balance to move audio toward the ear that hears better. Make small adjustments while listening to speech, then test a second source. A balance setting changes channel emphasis; it does not increase the physical output of a weak speaker or repair a blocked earbud.

Hearing aid support
If your device and hearing aids support the documented integration, open Settings > Accessibility > Hearing aid support and follow the pairing or connection prompts displayed there. Compatibility, pairing steps and available controls are model-dependent. Keep the hearing-aid manufacturer’s instructions available, and do not infer compatibility merely because Bluetooth audio works for another accessory.

Do not confuse Accessibility audio with ordinary volume
The Android XR accessibility overview documents captions, mono audio, hearing-aid support and channel balance. It does not provide a complete, universal procedure for changing general media volume. Use the device’s own volume controls, Quick Settings or paired-phone controls for ordinary loudness, following the labels shown on your model. Accessibility settings solve different problems: captions add text, mono combines channels, balance shifts emphasis, and hearing-aid support handles a compatible assistive device.

Google’s setup instructions for headsets cover physical fit. They do not establish the same controls for AI glasses.
Secure the headset with its straps
- Put the headset on while holding it securely so it does not slide.
- Adjust the straps until the headset is stable without pressing painfully on your face or creating excessive pressure.
- Move your head normally and check whether the image shifts. If it does, make small strap changes rather than tightening everything at once.
- Recheck comfort after several minutes. A fit that feels acceptable immediately can become tiring if the pressure is uneven.
The goal is a secure, comfortable fit, not the tightest possible adjustment. If the headset remains uncomfortable or unstable after following its setup instructions, contact the manufacturer. Do not improvise modifications that could obstruct sensors, vents or lenses.

Follow the on-screen lens instructions
During headset setup, follow the on-screen instructions for lens positioning and visual clarity. Make the adjustments the device requests, then check text and high-contrast edges. If one eye remains blurry, the image is doubled, or clarity changes when you move, repeat the guided setup once. Persistent problems require the manufacturer’s support process because the correct lens mechanism differs by headset.

What glasses wearers should do instead
AI glasses may have fixed optics, nose pads, temple adjustments or no user-adjustable lens mechanism at all. Use the exact glasses model’s fit guide and companion app. Do not pull on a strap that the glasses do not have, search for a headset lens menu that the glasses do not provide, or assume a phone’s display slider changes the glasses’ optical clarity. If prescription-lens compatibility is a concern, use the manufacturer’s approved guidance.
A practical comfort sequence
When the image or sound feels uncomfortable, change one category at a time so you can identify the cause.
- Check physical fit first. On a headset, stabilize the straps and complete the lens guidance. On glasses, reseat the frame and use the model’s fit instructions.
- Set brightness. Use Home > Quick Settings > Screen brightness and match the level to the room.
- Improve readability. In Settings > Accessibility, try display size or text controls before magnification.
- Address motion. Enable Reduce animations if it is available and supported by the apps you use.
- Address hearing. Choose captions, mono audio, channel balance or hearing-aid support according to the problem, rather than raising volume indiscriminately.
- Test with familiar content. Read a menu, watch a captioned clip and listen to speech. Record which change helped so you can restore it later.
When a documented option is missing
- You are using AI glasses: check the paired phone or companion app; the full Android XR headset menu may not be present.
- The wording is different: search within Settings for terms such as brightness, accessibility, captions, mono, balance or hearing aid.
- The feature is unavailable in your market: Google explicitly says navigation and feature names can vary across markets and devices.
- An app ignores the setting: Reduce animations and text presentation are documented only where supported; check that app’s own settings.
- The image is still unclear: redo the headset’s on-screen lens setup or follow the glasses manufacturer’s fit guidance; software scaling cannot correct every optical problem.
- Audio remains uneven: verify that the issue is not the source recording, a blocked speaker or an incorrect accessory connection before changing balance again.
Before you finish setup
- Confirm whether the device is a standalone headset or companion AI glasses.
- Set brightness from Quick Settings and test it in your normal environment.
- Choose display size, text, magnification, contrast, color or Reduce animations only when each addresses a specific need.
- Configure captions with the required language, size and style if available.
- Use mono audio, left/right balance or hearing-aid support for the corresponding hearing need.
- Complete headset strap and lens guidance; use separate model instructions for glasses.
- Keep in mind that labels and availability can differ by device and market.
These controls let you tailor a supported Android XR headset without assuming that every Android XR-branded product exposes the same menus. The device type and model-specific instructions determine which adjustments you can actually make.
