Godlike.Host offers hosted Garry's Mod servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
For player damage, Garry’s Mod does not have a confirmed built-in global damage-multiplier convar. The documented route is server-side Lua: use GM:ScalePlayerDamage for bullet hits on players, or GM:EntityTakeDamage when the change must cover all damage types. NPC damage is a separate case, handled by GM:ScaleNPCDamage and sk_npc_* convars. If you want convar controls rather than Lua, a Workshop addon offers per-body-part multipliers, but check its settings and compatibility on your own server before relying on it.
Choose the method that matches the damage you want to change
First decide whether you mean damage dealt to players or NPCs, and whether the change should affect bullet hits only or every damage type. Those distinctions determine which Garry’s Mod hook or addon setting is relevant.
| Method | What it affects | Lua required? | What is established |
|---|---|---|---|
GM:ScalePlayerDamage |
Bullet damage received by players, with body-part handling | Yes; it belongs in server-side addon or gamemode code | Documented by the Garry’s Mod Wiki |
GM:EntityTakeDamage |
Damage to players beyond bullet damage; use it when all damage types must be detected | Yes | Identified by the Garry’s Mod Wiki as the all-damage detection route |
GM:ScaleNPCDamage and sk_npc_* |
NPC damage, including per-hitgroup skill values | The hook route requires Lua; the named skill values are convars | Applies to NPCs, not players |
| Another Player and NPC Damage Multiplier addon | Player and NPC damage, with per-body-part controls; its listing also describes explosion and poison headcrab damage | Not for its exposed convar controls | Listed defaults are available, but exact behaviour on a particular server build has not been tested |
There is no confirmed single built-in player damage multiplier in the documented options here. Do not assume an unfamiliar convar changes player damage just because its name sounds relevant.
Adjust player damage with server-side Lua
Use GM:ScalePlayerDamage for bullet hits
The Garry’s Mod Wiki describes GM:ScalePlayerDamage as a hook that lets a gamemode change how much damage a player receives when hit in a specific body part. Its important limitation is scope: it is called for bullet damage a player receives, not every kind of damage in the game.

The Wiki’s example pattern doubles headshot damage and halves damage elsewhere. That is an illustration of per-hitgroup scaling, not a universal server setting or a preset you can enable from a standard configuration file. To use the hook, the change must be implemented in server-side Lua within your addon or gamemode.
- Identify the target. Confirm that the adjustment is for player damage, rather than NPCs.
- Confirm the damage scope. If you only want to scale bullet hits to players,
GM:ScalePlayerDamageis the documented hook to investigate. - Put the change in server-side Lua. Implement it in the addon or gamemode that runs on the server. The hook is code-based; it is not a stand-alone console multiplier.
- Set the intended hitgroup behavior. Decide which body parts should be scaled and by how much. The Wiki example doubles headshot damage and halves other damage, but those are example values, not requirements.
- Test each relevant hitgroup and weapon. Verify that the hook runs for the bullet hits you intend to affect and that the result matches your chosen scaling.
The supplied documentation identifies the hook and its scope but does not establish a complete, version-specific code snippet or installation path for every addon and gamemode. Use the API details for the codebase you are actually editing, and test the implementation on your server rather than copying an assumed signature or file path.

Use GM:EntityTakeDamage when the scope is broader
If the goal is to alter all damage received by players, the bullet-only limit of GM:ScalePlayerDamage matters. The Garry’s Mod Wiki identifies GM:EntityTakeDamage as the hook to detect all damage. This is the relevant direction when you need a policy that includes non-bullet sources rather than only bullet hits.
Do not treat the two hooks as interchangeable. A change made through GM:ScalePlayerDamage alone should not be assumed to cover explosions, poison, or other non-bullet damage. Conversely, broader damage handling can have a wider effect than a per-body-part bullet adjustment, so define the intended targets and damage types before implementing it, then verify each case in play.

Adjust NPC damage separately
NPC damage uses a different hook and a different family of settings from player damage. The documented hook is GM:ScaleNPCDamage; its per-hitgroup values are read from sk_npc_* convars, including the example sk_npc_head. These NPC settings affect NPCs, not players.
That separation is useful when a server needs different balance for human players and computer-controlled characters. Changing an NPC skill value is not a substitute for implementing player damage scaling, and changing a player hook does not establish how NPCs will behave.

- For NPC-specific adjustments, investigate
GM:ScaleNPCDamageand the relevantsk_npc_*values. - For player bullet damage, use the player-specific hook rather than expecting NPC skill values to apply.
- For all player damage types, the documented detection route is
GM:EntityTakeDamage, not an NPC convar.
Use a Workshop addon if you need convar controls
The Workshop addon titled “Another Player and NPC Damage Multiplier” exposes convars for player and NPC damage. The listed player examples include AnotherDMGMultiplier_Plr_Head and AnotherDMGMultiplier_Plr_Arm. Its listing gives a head multiplier default of 2 and arm and leg multiplier defaults of 0.25. Those are the addon’s listed defaults, not built-in Garry’s Mod defaults and not guaranteed values for every installation.
The addon’s description also covers NPC damage, explosion damage, and poison headcrab damage. Its presence may be convenient if you want settings exposed as convars instead of writing Lua, but the available information does not establish exact behavior on your server build or compatibility with your gamemode.

- Install and enable the addon on the server using its own Workshop instructions.
- Check the addon’s current listing or documentation for the convars it actually exposes and the syntax it expects.
- Inspect the effective values on your server rather than assuming the listed defaults are still active.
- Change one setting at a time, then test the intended body part, damage source, and target type.
- Confirm that the values persist across a server restart if persistence is required, and verify that no gamemode or other addon changes the same damage behavior.
The exact convar behavior on a particular build has not been established here. Treat the names and defaults above as a starting point for verification, not as proof that the addon is compatible with the latest branch or with every server setup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not rely on unverified player convars
Garry’s Mod’s convar list includes HL2-style skill names such as sk_player_head, sk_player_leg, and sk_player_stomach. Their names may suggest player damage controls, but it has not been confirmed that they change Garry’s Mod player damage. Do not use them as your damage-balancing method unless you test and verify their effect in the specific server configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLikewise, a hosting guide summary mentions sbox_plpldamage and sbox_godmode in connection with Sandbox settings, but its account of the effect of sbox_plpldamage is internally inconsistent. It is therefore not safe to prescribe a value for that convar as a general player-damage fix. Verify behavior in a controlled server test before changing it, and do not mistake a player-versus-player toggle for a general incoming-damage multiplier.
Check gamemode and addon interactions
A damage hook or convar may not behave as expected if the active gamemode, its base, or another addon also handles damage. The available documentation does not establish whether common gamemodes such as DarkRP or Trouble in Terrorist Town override these settings. Treat compatibility as something to confirm in the exact gamemode and addon combination you run.
- Test on the same gamemode and addon set as the live server.
- Check player and NPC behavior separately; they use different documented paths.
- Test bullets and non-bullet damage separately if both should change.
- Keep a record of the original settings so you can revert a change that affects unintended damage sources.
- After updates to the game, gamemode, or addon, repeat the relevant checks; compatibility with the latest branch as of October 14, 2026 is not established here.
Verify the change with a controlled test
Damage balancing is easy to misread if several variables change at once. Use a private or otherwise controlled server test and compare the same target and damage source before and after the change.
Quick Recap
- Record the baseline behavior for the target type: player or NPC.
- Choose a single damage source and hitgroup, such as a bullet hit to the head. Keep the weapon and other conditions consistent.
- Change only the relevant hook implementation or addon convar.
- Repeat the same test and check whether the intended damage changed.
- Test other hitgroups and damage sources that are in scope, especially non-bullet damage if you expect it to be affected.
- Restart the server if needed to check persistence, then verify that the values and behavior remain as intended.
- If a change has no visible effect, check that the server is running the expected addon or gamemode code, that the setting targets the right entity type, and that another component is not controlling damage.
Common mistakes
- Expecting one global player multiplier: no single built-in global player damage convar was confirmed. Use a documented Lua hook or a verified addon.
- Using a bullet hook for every damage source:
GM:ScalePlayerDamageapplies to bullet damage received by players. UseGM:EntityTakeDamagewhen you need to detect all damage. - Applying NPC settings to players:
sk_npc_*values andGM:ScaleNPCDamageconcern NPCs. - Treating addon defaults as game defaults: the multiplier values belong to the named Workshop addon and may not be active or unchanged on your server.
- Assuming a suggestive convar name proves its effect: the effects of
sk_player_*values on player damage are unconfirmed, and the reportedsbox_plpldamageguidance conflicts. - Assuming a gamemode cannot interfere: interactions with specific gamemodes and addon combinations are not established, so test in the live configuration.
