Carbonation and flavor strength are adjusted separately on most SodaStream drinks makers. First carbonate cold, plain water using the control for your model; then add drink mix or drops and adjust the amount to taste. Never carbonate or re-carbonate water that already contains flavoring. The FOUNTAIN model is the exception: it provides separate fizz and flavor controls in the machine.
What “drink strength” means on a SodaStream
People use “strength” to mean two different things:
- Carbonation strength: how much dissolved carbon dioxide gives the water a light, medium or strongly fizzy texture.
- Flavor strength: how concentrated the syrup, drink mix or flavor drops taste.
On ordinary SodaStream makers, the machine controls carbonation only. Flavor is added afterward, so changing the flavor amount does not change the carbonation setting. FOUNTAIN combines both adjustments in one appliance with independent fizz and flavor controls.

Use cold, plain water
Fill the compatible bottle with cold water to its marked fill line. SodaStream’s operating guidance is to carbonate water only. Do not add syrup, powder, juice, alcohol or flavor drops before pressing the carbonation control. Carbonating another liquid can cause excessive foaming, difficult cleanup or unsafe pressure behavior.

Check the bottle and cylinder fit
Bottle and carbon-dioxide cylinder compatibility depends on the maker model. Confirm that the bottle is approved for your machine and that the cylinder connection matches it before use. SodaStream’s Classic product information identifies the pink Quick Connect carbon-dioxide cylinder as compatible with that product; do not assume the same cylinder or bottle fits every other model.
Identify your model
Look for the model name printed on the front, top or rear of the appliance. The controls are not interchangeable: E-DUO and ONE TOUCH use preset buttons, TERRA and GAIA use repeated button presses, ART uses a lever, and FOUNTAIN has integrated fizz and flavor controls. If your controls do not match the descriptions below, use the instructions for the exact model rather than borrowing another model’s press count.
Quick model comparison
| Model | Carbonation control | Typical manufacturer setting | Flavor adjustment |
|---|---|---|---|
| E-DUO | Three buttons: light, medium and strong | Choose the desired preset, then wait three seconds before unlocking the flask lever | Add flavor after carbonation |
| TERRA | Carbonation button held for one to two seconds per press | Three repetitions for standard fizz; five for stronger fizz | Add flavor after carbonation |
| GAIA | Short carbonation-button presses | Three presses for standard carbonation; five for strong carbonation | Add flavor after carbonation |
| ART | Lever pressed fully for about one second per stroke | Three lever strokes for standard fizz; five for stronger fizz | Add flavor after carbonation |
| ONE TOUCH | One-, two- and three-drop buttons | Select light, medium or strong directly | Add flavor after carbonation |
| FOUNTAIN | Still, light, medium or strong selection | Choose the fizz level independently from flavor | Dial from 0 to 4, with B for a boost |
The three- and five-repetition guidance is SodaStream’s manufacturer instruction, not an independently measured carbonation scale. Water temperature, fill level, cylinder condition and the particular unit can affect the result.
How to adjust carbonation on each model
E-DUO
- Fill the E-DUO bottle with cold water to the marked line.
- Insert and secure the bottle according to the machine’s locking mechanism.
- Press the left button for light fizz, the middle button for medium fizz or the right button for strong fizz.
- After the machine reaches the selected level, wait three seconds.
- Unlock the flask lever and release the bottle. Do not force the bottle out while it is still locked or pressurized.
The buttons are presets, so do not apply the TERRA or ART three/five-press method to an E-DUO.
TERRA
- Fill the bottle with cold water to the line and attach it securely.
- Press the carbonation button for one to two seconds, then release it.
- Repeat the press three times for SodaStream’s standard-fizz instruction.
- Repeat it five times when you want the manufacturer’s stronger-fizz setting.
- Wait for the excess carbon dioxide to release before removing the bottle.
Use deliberate, separate presses rather than holding the button continuously. If the bottle remains locked, wait for pressure to dissipate and follow the release procedure for the machine.
GAIA
- Fill with cold water to the bottle’s fill line.
- Secure the bottle in the GAIA.
- Use short presses of the carbonation button.
- Press three times for standard carbonation or five times for strong carbonation, following SodaStream’s instructions.
- Wait for the machine’s pressure-release stage before removing the bottle.
Because GAIA uses short presses, a long hold is not a substitute for the specified repetitions.
ART
- Fill the compatible bottle with cold water to the line.
- Attach the bottle and make sure it is properly seated.
- Press the lever fully for about one second, then release it.
- Perform three lever strokes for standard fizz or five for stronger fizz.
- Remove the bottle only after the machine has completed its pressure-release behavior.
Each stroke is one complete press-and-release cycle. Do not hold the lever down continuously or pull the bottle free while pressure remains.

ONE TOUCH
- Fill and attach the bottle with cold water.
- Press the one-drop button for light carbonation, the two-drop button for medium carbonation or the three-drop button for strong carbonation.
- Allow the automatic cycle to finish before unlocking or removing the bottle.
ONE TOUCH’s drop icons are level selections, not instructions to press the same button multiple times.
FOUNTAIN
- Fill and attach the bottle with cold water.
- Choose the fizz setting: still, light, medium or strong.
- Set the flavor dial separately. Level 0 means no flavor; levels progress through 4, and B provides a boost.
- Dispense according to the machine’s procedure and taste the result.
SodaStream describes level 4 as its recommended serving level. Its published dose chart is a target rather than a guarantee because amounts can vary by unit. Do not combine flavor selections above the total of level 4 unless the product instructions specifically allow it; the FOUNTAIN guidance warns against exceeding that total.
How to make the flavor stronger or weaker
Most SodaStream makers: flavor after carbonation
After fizzing plain water, remove the bottle as instructed and add the flavoring slowly. Keep the bottle upright, leave room for the liquid to mix, and avoid shaking hard immediately after adding syrup because carbonation can drive foam up the neck.
SodaStream’s product-specific example for a 1-liter bottle filled to its flavor line is approximately three tablespoons of Classic or Pepsi drink mix. For bubly drops, the example is about one-half tablespoon per 1 liter. These are directions for those products, not a universal syrup ratio. Different concentrates have different dosing instructions, so read the label for the particular mix or drops you are using.
A repeatable adjustment method
- Carbonate the full bottle of cold water to your chosen fizz level.
- Add the product’s stated starting dose, or a smaller amount if you prefer a mild drink.
- Pour a small glass and taste it before adding more.
- Increase flavor in small increments, recording the amount if you want to reproduce the result.
- If the drink becomes too concentrated, dilute it with additional plain sparkling water. Do not run the flavored mixture through the carbonator again.
FOUNTAIN flavor settings
FOUNTAIN’s dial changes flavor independently of fizz. Level 0 produces no flavor, levels 1 through 4 increase the selected serving intensity, and B is a boost setting. Use the size-based dose targets supplied with the machine as a starting point, then adjust within the stated range. The chart is not a universal formula for other SodaStream models or other concentrates.
How to get more fizz without overcarbonating
- Start with water that is cold, because SodaStream’s instructions specify cold water and colder water generally holds carbon dioxide more effectively.
- Fill only to the bottle’s marked line; an incorrect fill level changes the available headspace.
- Use the model’s intended control sequence rather than copying another maker’s button count.
- Wait for the pressure-release step before opening the lock or removing the bottle.
- Taste the water before adding flavor so you can tell whether a weak result comes from carbonation or from an under-dosed concentrate.
If the fizz is still below your preference after following the model’s stronger setting, check the cylinder connection, bottle seating and cylinder supply according to the maker’s manual. Do not compensate by carbonating flavored liquid.
Separate the two adjustments when troubleshooting
A simple plain-water test prevents flavor from confusing the diagnosis. Carbonate a small batch of cold water, taste it before adding anything and note whether the bubbles are weaker or stronger than expected. If the plain water is sufficiently fizzy but the finished drink tastes dull, the issue is probably the flavor dose rather than the carbonation control. If both plain water and the finished drink are flat, review the bottle seating, fill level, cylinder connection and model-specific cycle.

Likewise, a very sharp or foamy drink does not necessarily mean that the syrup is too strong. Excess foam can result from adding flavor too quickly, using warm water or removing a bottle before pressure has released. Make one change at a time: keep the flavor dose constant while testing a different fizz level, then return to the preferred fizz and adjust flavor separately.

Common control mistakes
- Borrowing another model’s sequence: three presses apply to the TERRA, GAIA and ART instructions described by SodaStream, but E-DUO and ONE TOUCH use level buttons. FOUNTAIN has its own fizz selector.
- Holding a manual control continuously: TERRA calls for one- to two-second presses, GAIA calls for short presses, and ART calls for individual one-second lever strokes.
- Pressing a drop icon repeatedly: on ONE TOUCH, one, two and three drops identify light, medium and strong settings; they are not repeat counts.
- Assuming a stronger taste needs more gas: flavor intensity comes from the mix, drops or FOUNTAIN dial. Extra carbonation cannot replace flavoring.
- Removing the bottle immediately: allow the automatic or manual pressure-release stage to finish, then use the stated unlocking procedure.
Troubleshooting weak, excessive or inconsistent results
The water tastes flat
- Confirm that the water was cold and filled to the correct line.
- Verify that the bottle was fully attached and that the cylinder is installed correctly.
- Repeat the exact control sequence for your model, using its stronger setting if desired.
- Check whether the carbon-dioxide cylinder is empty or nearly empty.
Do not judge carbonation after adding syrup: flavor changes sweetness and acidity and can make the drink seem less fizzy even when the water was carbonated correctly.
The drink tastes too strong
Flavor strength is controlled by the amount or dial setting, not by additional carbonation. Dilute with plain sparkling water or make the next bottle with less concentrate. Follow the product label rather than assuming that a tablespoon measurement applies to every flavor.
The bottle foams over
- Use cold water and never carbonate a flavored liquid.
- Stay at or below the bottle’s fill line.
- After carbonation, add flavor slowly and keep the bottle upright.
- Allow pressure to release before unlocking the bottle.
The bottle will not release
Do not pull or twist it free. On the E-DUO, SodaStream specifies waiting three seconds before unlocking the flask lever. On other locking models, wait for the excess carbon dioxide to release and follow the model’s release instructions. A bottle that remains stuck should be handled according to the machine’s manual rather than forced while pressurized.
The machine’s controls do not match this guide
Locate the model name and use that model’s manual. SodaStream has several control designs, and a three-press instruction for one maker is not a universal setting.
Safety rules that apply to every model
- Carbonate plain water only. SodaStream’s support guidance states: “Do not carbonate anything other than water.”
- Never re-carbonate a flavored drink; SodaStream specifically warns that flavored drinks cannot be re-carbonated.
- Use only bottles approved for the particular machine and replace bottles according to their printed instructions.
- Keep the bottle secured during carbonation and wait for pressure release before removing it.
- Do not exceed the bottle’s fill line or improvise with containers that are not designed for the maker.
Choosing the right adjustment approach
| If you want to… | Use this adjustment | Where to make it |
|---|---|---|
| Make bubbles lighter | Select light, use fewer prescribed repetitions, or choose still on FOUNTAIN | Carbonation control before flavoring |
| Make bubbles stronger | Select strong, use the manufacturer’s five repetitions where specified, or choose strong on FOUNTAIN | Carbonation control before flavoring |
| Make the taste stronger | Add more compatible mix or drops, or turn the FOUNTAIN flavor dial higher | After carbonation, or on FOUNTAIN’s flavor control |
| Make the taste weaker | Use less flavoring or dilute with plain sparkling water | After carbonation, or on FOUNTAIN’s flavor control |
| Change both | Set fizz first, then adjust flavor independently | Two separate adjustments |
For replacement bottles or cylinders, verify compatibility by exact model. A bottle that fits one SodaStream maker may not fit another, and the same applies to cylinder connection systems.
Buying flavor products and replacement parts
When the goal is a stronger-tasting drink, choose a SodaStream-compatible drink mix or flavor drops and use the dose printed for that product. The Classic and Pepsi example is approximately three tablespoons per 1-liter bottle at the flavor line; bubly drops use a different example dose of about one-half tablespoon per 1 liter. These figures demonstrate why a single syrup ratio cannot be transferred between products.

Replacement bottles and carbon-dioxide cylinders are secondary equipment choices, not universal accessories. Check the exact maker model, bottle connection and cylinder system before ordering. SodaStream’s Classic product information identifies the pink Quick Connect cylinder for that product, but this does not establish compatibility with every maker. If a listing does not name your model or connection type, consult the model manual instead of relying on appearance alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical one-bottle workflow
- Identify the maker model and confirm the bottle and cylinder are compatible.
- Fill the bottle with cold water to its marked line.
- Carbonate using the model-specific control: preset button, repeated presses, lever strokes or FOUNTAIN fizz selection.
- Wait for the release stage and remove the bottle safely.
- Add the flavor product according to its own dose instructions.
- Taste a small pour and adjust flavor gradually.
- Store or serve the drink without putting it back through the carbonator.
This sequence keeps the two variables separate: the machine determines fizz, while the flavor product and its dose determine taste intensity.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I carbonate juice, syrup, alcohol or a finished soda in a SodaStream maker?
No. SodaStream’s support guidance says to carbonate water only. Add flavor after carbonating plain water, and do not put a flavored drink back through the machine.
How many times should I press a TERRA, GAIA or ART?
SodaStream’s instructions describe three repetitions for standard fizz and five for stronger fizz on these models. TERRA uses one- to two-second button presses, GAIA uses short presses and ART uses full one-second lever strokes. These counts are not universal for every SodaStream model.
How do I adjust an E-DUO or ONE TOUCH?
E-DUO uses separate light, medium and strong buttons, followed by a three-second wait before releasing the flask lever. ONE TOUCH uses one-, two- and three-drop buttons for light, medium and strong carbonation. Do not repeat these buttons as though they were manual press counts.
How much flavoring should I add to a 1-liter bottle?
Follow the specific product label. SodaStream gives an example of approximately three tablespoons of Classic or Pepsi mix at the 1-liter flavor line, and about one-half tablespoon of bubly drops per 1 liter. Those amounts are product-specific, not a universal formula.
How can I make the drink taste stronger without making it fizzier?
Keep the carbonation setting unchanged and add compatible mix or drops in small increments after carbonation. Taste a small pour between additions. On FOUNTAIN, raise the flavor dial independently of the fizz setting.

What does the FOUNTAIN flavor dial mean?
The dial runs from 0, for no flavor, through 4, with B as a boost. SodaStream describes level 4 as its recommended serving level and provides size-based dose targets. Treat those targets as starting points because amounts can vary by unit, and do not combine selections above the total of level 4.
Why is my finished drink flat even though I used the strong setting?
Test the plain carbonated water before adding flavor. If it is flat, check cold-water temperature, fill line, bottle seating, cylinder installation and cylinder supply, then repeat the exact sequence for your model. If the plain water is fizzy, adjust the flavor dose instead of adding gas to the finished drink.
Why is my bottle foaming when I add flavor?
Use cold water, stay at the fill line, release pressure before opening and add flavor slowly while keeping the bottle upright. Never carbonate a liquid that already contains flavoring.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCan I use any SodaStream bottle or cylinder as a replacement?
No. Compatibility depends on the exact maker and connection system. Verify the approved bottle and cylinder in the model instructions; the pink Quick Connect cylinder identified for the Classic product should not be assumed to fit every other model.
What should I do if the bottle is stuck in the machine?
Do not pull or twist it free. Wait for pressure to release and follow the model’s unlocking procedure. E-DUO instructions specifically call for a three-second wait before unlocking the flask lever.
The Bottom Line
Set carbonation with the control designed for your exact SodaStream model, using cold plain water. Once pressure has released, add the compatible flavor product according to its label and adjust taste gradually. Never carbonate or re-carbonate a flavored drink, and verify bottle and cylinder compatibility before replacing accessories.
