Backup-camera line, brightness, and contrast controls are vehicle-specific. On systems that provide them, open the camera while the vehicle is safely stopped, then use Display Contents (or a similarly named option) to show or hide guide lines and Display Settings to change brightness or contrast. The exact menu, available line types, and even whether manual image controls exist depend on the vehicle’s equipment and infotainment software.
What you can usually adjust
A reversing-camera screen may expose two different groups of controls:
- Guide-line display: Turns parking guide lines on or off. Some systems offer more than one view or an extended rear-view display as separate choices.
- Image display: Adjusts brightness and contrast when the camera system supports manual control. Other systems regulate brightness automatically and do not show these sliders.
Those controls do not necessarily recalibrate the camera. Showing a line, hiding it, or changing contrast is different from changing the physical alignment or geometry used to draw the line. A menu can control what is drawn on the screen without providing any way to change where the camera is mounted or how its image is interpreted.
The available choices can also differ within one model range. Trim level, a factory or dealer-installed camera, regional equipment packages, and the infotainment software version can all affect the menu. Treat every on-screen option as a feature of that particular vehicle, not as a standard capability of all backup cameras.

Before opening the camera settings
- Park safely and keep control of the vehicle. Do not attempt to change settings while moving.
- Turn the vehicle on as directed by its owner’s manual.
- Display the rear-camera image, commonly by selecting Reverse. Some systems also allow the camera view to be opened from a parking or driver-assistance screen.
- Keep the exact owner manual for the vehicle available. Menu names vary with make, model, model year, trim, region, installed camera equipment, and infotainment software version.
- If another person is helping, identify whether the camera is original equipment or an added paired-camera system. Instructions for an accessory system may not apply to the vehicle’s built-in display.
If the camera image does not appear, this is a different problem from a hidden guideline or an incorrect brightness setting. Resolve the camera-display fault first rather than changing unrelated vehicle settings. A missing image can involve the camera, wiring, display selection, or a system fault; a guide-line setting cannot restore an image that is not being delivered.
General procedure for turning lines on or off
- With the rear-camera view displayed, look for a Settings, setup, or gear icon on the camera screen. On some systems the icon appears only while the camera image is active.
- If no icon is visible, open the infotainment system’s main settings and look in Vehicle, Driver assistance, Parking safety, Display, or Camera settings. These are documented menu families, not a universal path.
- Open Display Contents, Guide lines, or the closest equivalent.
- Select the parking-guide-line option to display it, or clear the option to hide it. If the system lists several rear views, change only the view you intend to use; an extended rear view is a separate feature from a guideline overlay.
- Return to the camera image and verify the result while the vehicle remains stopped.
- Record the setting you changed if more than one driver uses the vehicle. This avoids mistaking a deliberately hidden overlay for a system failure later.
A missing guideline choice can mean the vehicle does not have that feature, the installed camera does not support it, or the manufacturer placed the control elsewhere. It does not by itself indicate a fault. Some systems expose only a general camera view, while others let you choose individual displayed contents.
If the option is present but will not stay selected, check the owner manual for conditions that limit settings changes, such as the camera not being active or a software update having reset preferences. Do not assume that a reset, battery disconnect, or unrelated display setting will create a capability that the vehicle was not equipped with.

| System example | Where the control appears | Line or image options documented | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kia rear-view monitor | Open the rear-view monitor setup icon, or use Settings → Vehicle → Driver assistance → Parking safety → Camera settings. | Display Contents controls rear-view parking guide lines and an extended rear view; Display Settings controls brightness and contrast. | The menu can be absent or different depending on vehicle specifications, and labels can change after an infotainment update. |
| Hyundai camera settings | Camera Settings is available on documented systems; one documented route is Settings → Display → Camera settings. | Displayed contents can include rear-view parking guide lines. Brightness and contrast are available on systems that provide manual display settings. | Some vehicles adjust camera brightness automatically and omit manual display controls. Equipment and menu placement vary. |
| Renault reversing camera | Use the camera screen’s Settings control. | The system can add or remove guide lines and adjust image settings. The documented system distinguishes fixed, moving, and trailer guide lines. | The available line types depend on the specific system and equipment. |
| Garmin paired-camera system | A separate guidance-line alignment function is documented for Garmin’s own paired-camera system. | Alignment is treated as a system-specific procedure rather than a general vehicle display setting. | That procedure does not establish a calibration method for an original-equipment vehicle camera. |
These examples show why copying a menu path from another vehicle is unreliable. Use the route that matches the exact manual and infotainment system installed in your vehicle. Even when two screens use the words “Camera Settings,” one may contain only visibility choices while another includes image controls or additional camera views.
Kia’s documented route illustrates that a camera control can be nested several levels deep, while Hyundai documents both camera-specific settings and a route through the Display menu. Renault places its controls on the camera screen itself. None of those locations should be treated as the default for every make or model.
How to adjust brightness and contrast
- Display the rear-camera image.
- Open the camera setup icon or the vehicle’s camera-settings menu.
- Choose Display Settings, Image Settings, or the equivalent control.
- Adjust brightness and contrast in small increments, checking that dark areas remain visible without washing out the entire image.
- Exit the menu and check the image again in the lighting conditions in which you normally reverse.
Brightness changes the overall lightness of the displayed picture. Contrast changes the separation between darker and lighter areas. Neither control changes the camera’s viewing angle, the vehicle’s path, or the physical distance to an obstacle. Use small adjustments and judge the result on the actual camera image rather than on a generic infotainment screen.
Do not keep searching for a brightness slider if the vehicle uses automatic camera-brightness control. Hyundai’s documented systems include examples in which manual display settings are omitted for that reason. In such a system, the absence of a slider is expected behavior, not proof that the screen is malfunctioning.
Automatic brightness can also make the image look different in daylight, shade, or darkness. That variation does not necessarily mean that a setting changed. If the image changes abruptly, remains unreadable, or shows a persistent fault message, consult the vehicle-specific troubleshooting information instead of repeatedly adjusting unrelated display controls.

Brightness and contrast change the displayed image; they do not repair a lens blocked by mud, snow, dirt, or condensation. Clean or clear the camera lens when the image is unclear before judging whether the display values are correct. Use a method that will not scratch the lens or force moisture into the camera housing, and follow any cleaning cautions in the owner manual.
Understanding the different guideline types
Fixed guide lines
Fixed lines remain in a set position on the screen. Renault documents fixed lines as one possible type. Their presence does not mean that the lines can be moved by the driver. They may represent a programmed reference for the vehicle’s rear area, but their exact meaning is defined by that camera system.
Steering-responsive or moving lines
Some systems display moving lines that respond to steering input. They are a different feature from fixed lines and may be listed separately in the camera settings. Do not assume a vehicle has them simply because it has a rear camera. If the lines remain stationary, the vehicle may intentionally provide fixed guidance or may lack the equipment needed for steering-responsive guidance.
Recommended Free Tools
Trailer-oriented lines
Renault also documents trailer guide lines. A trailer-oriented overlay is relevant only when the vehicle and camera system support that function; it is not interchangeable with ordinary parking lines. Selecting a trailer view when you are not using the associated equipment can make the display appear unfamiliar, so verify the selected content before diagnosing a line problem.
Extended rear views
An extended rear-view option, where fitted, changes the displayed camera content. It is separate from the switch that shows or hides parking lines, so changing one may not change the other. If an extended view is selected, compare the screen with the description in the manual before concluding that the normal guide lines have disappeared.
What the lines do not tell you
Guide lines are visual aids, not a universal measurement system. Their behavior depends on the camera’s mounting position, the programmed vehicle data, and the selected view. They do not replace direct observation, mirrors, sensors, or careful control of the vehicle. Do not infer that a line is inaccurate solely because it differs from the overlay on another vehicle.
When lines look misaligned
First determine whether the apparent problem is actually a selection issue. Confirm that the line type shown is the one intended for that camera system and that you have not switched to a different rear view or trailer mode.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check whether the camera lens is dirty, wet, snow-covered, or fogged. An obscured lens can make the whole image—and therefore the lines—appear misleading.
- Check the exact owner manual for a line-alignment or calibration function. The presence of a guideline display option does not imply that alignment is user-adjustable.
- Do not apply another vehicle’s calibration steps. A Garmin alignment procedure for a paired-camera system is specific to that system and cannot be treated as a universal original-equipment procedure.
- If the vehicle’s own documentation does not provide an alignment procedure and the lines remain demonstrably wrong, use the manufacturer’s service information or an appropriately qualified service facility for that vehicle.
Changing brightness, contrast, or line visibility will not physically realign a camera. Treat those as display settings, not as a substitute for vehicle-specific calibration or repair instructions.

Suspect a genuine alignment or hardware issue only after checking the selected view and clearing the lens. A changed bumper, repaired liftgate, replaced camera, or impact can require procedures that are not available in the ordinary owner menu. The appropriate steps depend on the exact vehicle and camera system; do not improvise a target, measurement, or adjustment sequence from a different model.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely explanation supported by the documented systems | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No camera-settings menu | The feature may not be fitted, may be unavailable for the vehicle’s specifications, or may be located under a different menu after a software update. | Check the exact owner manual and search the Vehicle, Driver assistance, Parking safety, Display, and Camera settings areas. |
| Lines are not visible | The guide-line option may be cleared, or the camera system may not provide that overlay. | Open Display Contents or the equivalent guide-line control and verify the equipment list in the manual. |
| No brightness or contrast controls | The camera may use automatic brightness control, or manual image settings may not be fitted. | Look for an automatic-brightness description in the manual; do not assume a missing slider is a defect. |
| Image is hazy, dark, or hard to read | The lens may be covered by dirt, mud, snow, or condensation; display values may also be unsuitable. | Inspect and clear the lens, then adjust image settings if the system provides them. |
| Lines seem to point the wrong way | A different line type or view may be selected, or the system may require a vehicle-specific alignment procedure. | Verify the selected content, then consult the exact manual or service information. Do not use an unrelated system’s calibration instructions. |
| Lines do not move with steering | The vehicle may provide fixed lines only, or moving-line equipment may not be installed. | Check whether the manual lists steering-responsive lines for that trim and camera system. |
| Extended view appears instead of the usual image | An additional rear-view content option may be selected. | Review Display Contents or the camera screen’s view controls and select the intended rear view. |
| Image changes with lighting | The system may regulate brightness automatically. | Confirm whether the manual describes automatic brightness before looking for a missing manual slider. |
Why another vehicle’s instructions may fail
Two vehicles can use similar words—Camera Settings, Display Contents, or Parking safety—while exposing different functions. One trim may include moving lines and manual contrast; another may provide only fixed lines and automatic brightness. Regional equipment packages can also change what appears on screen. Infotainment updates may rename or relocate an option without changing the camera hardware.
For that reason, identify the make, model, year, trim, region, and infotainment system before following detailed instructions. If you are asking someone else for help, provide those details and specify whether the goal is to show lines, hide them, change brightness, change contrast, select a trailer view, or investigate suspected misalignment.

Do not infer compatibility from the shape of the screen or the presence of a camera image. An original-equipment system and a paired accessory camera can use different alignment methods, controls, and line behavior even if both display on the same type of monitor. The Garmin example is useful precisely because it demonstrates a system-specific alignment function, not a universal one.
Do you need to buy anything?
For the settings covered here, normally no. Showing or hiding lines and changing available image controls are menu actions. A replacement camera, calibration target, or installation tool belongs to a separate vehicle-specific repair or installation task, not to a general display-settings adjustment.
If the camera is damaged, the lens housing is broken, or the lines remain demonstrably misaligned after the documented checks, a qualified service provider may be appropriate. The correct part, procedure, and labor requirement cannot be determined without the vehicle details, so a generic product recommendation or price would be misleading.
Safe operating habits
- Set or inspect camera options while stopped, never while maneuvering.
- Use the camera as an aid and continue to control the vehicle directly.
- Keep the lens clean and clear; a display adjustment cannot compensate for an obstructed lens.
- Do not interpret guide lines as a universal measurement or guarantee of clearance. Their type and behavior are defined by the particular camera system.
- When a setting is unavailable, confirm whether the vehicle simply lacks that equipment before treating the absence as a fault.
- Check the surroundings directly and use mirrors and other available aids when reversing.
What to provide when you need exact instructions
A generic menu path can narrow the search, but exact steps require vehicle details. Include:

- The specific result you want: show or hide lines, change brightness, change contrast, select a trailer view, or correct suspected alignment
- A description of what appears now, including whether the image is present, whether lines are fixed or moving, and whether any warning message is shown
With those details, the matching owner manual can tell you whether the control exists and whether it is a display option or a separate service procedure. If the manual does not list a user adjustment, do not substitute instructions from a similar-looking vehicle.

Frequently asked questions
How do I turn on the lines on my backup camera?
Display the rear camera, open its Settings or setup icon, and look for Display Contents, Guide lines, or a similar option. If the icon is not on the camera screen, check the Vehicle, Driver assistance, Parking safety, Display, or Camera settings menus. The exact route depends on the vehicle and its installed equipment.
How do I turn the backup-camera lines off?
Use the same guide-line control and clear the parking-guide-line option. Some systems separate ordinary parking lines from an extended rear view or other displayed contents, so change only the option you intend to disable.
Why is there no brightness slider?
Some systems regulate camera brightness automatically and therefore omit manual display controls. The camera may also lack manual image settings because of its equipment level. Check the matching owner manual before treating the missing slider as a fault.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan I make the lines move with the steering wheel?
Only if the vehicle and camera system provide steering-responsive or moving guidance. A display menu cannot create that feature on a system equipped with fixed lines only.
Can I calibrate the lines from the owner menu?
Not necessarily. A guideline visibility switch is not the same as an alignment function. Follow a calibration procedure only when the exact vehicle or camera manual documents one. Garmin documents alignment for a particular paired-camera system, but that does not provide a general procedure for factory cameras.
Will changing contrast fix lines that point in the wrong direction?
No. Contrast changes the appearance of the image; it does not change camera geometry or physical alignment. First verify the selected view and line type, then consult vehicle-specific service information if the problem remains.
Why are my lines missing after an infotainment update?
An update can rename or relocate settings, and some menus vary by software version. Search the current Camera settings, Display, Vehicle, and driver-assistance areas and use the updated owner information for that system.
What should I do if the camera picture is blurry?
Inspect the lens for dirt, mud, snow, water, or condensation and clear it carefully. Brightness and contrast adjustments cannot remove an obstruction. If the image remains unclear after the lens is clear, use the vehicle’s troubleshooting or service information.

Do all backup cameras have guide lines?
No. Guide-line availability depends on the camera, trim, and installed equipment. A vehicle can have a reversing image without fixed, moving, or trailer-oriented overlays.
Is a trailer guide line the same as a parking guide line?
No. Trailer-oriented guidance is a distinct feature documented on some systems. Select it only when the vehicle and camera system support that mode and it matches the situation.
What information should I give someone who is helping me?
Provide the make, model, year, trim, region, infotainment version, camera type, and the exact goal—showing lines, hiding them, changing brightness or contrast, selecting a view, or correcting suspected alignment. Also describe what appears on the screen now.

How do I turn on the lines on my backup camera?
Open the active camera’s Settings or setup icon and select Display Contents, Guide lines, or the equivalent. If no icon appears, check the vehicle’s Vehicle, Driver assistance, Parking safety, Display, or Camera settings menus.
Why is there no brightness or contrast control?
The system may adjust brightness automatically or may not include manual image settings. Confirm the feature list for the exact vehicle before assuming a fault.
Can I recalibrate lines from the display menu?
Usually, a line-visibility menu only shows or hides overlays. Use an alignment procedure only when the exact camera or vehicle documentation provides one.
What should I do if the camera image is unclear?
Inspect and clear dirt, mud, snow, water, or condensation from the lens. Display adjustments cannot correct an obstructed camera.
Do all vehicles have moving or trailer guide lines?
No. Fixed, steering-responsive, and trailer lines are separate, vehicle-specific features.
The Bottom Line
Start with the exact vehicle manual, not a generic calibration guide. While stopped, open the rear-camera Settings control or the relevant Vehicle, Driver assistance, Parking safety, Display, or Camera settings menu. Use Display Contents to show or hide available lines and Display Settings to change brightness or contrast when those controls exist. Fixed, moving, trailer, and extended-view options are equipment-specific, and automatic brightness may eliminate manual sliders. Clean an obscured lens, and never treat another vehicle’s alignment procedure as universal.
