You can adjust a Kindle’s text, page layout, background and reading-progress display from the settings toolbar inside a book. These five changes are useful starting points, not universally better defaults: choose the combination that suits your eyes, reading habits and device.
Where to find Kindle reading settings
On a Kindle e-reader, open a book, tap the top of the screen to reveal the toolbars, then tap the Aa or Page Display icon. The Font, Layout, More and Themes tabs contain the settings below. Amazon notes that “Display Settings may vary across Kindle device models,” so a control may be absent or named differently on your device. See Amazon’s guide to customizing Kindle text display.
1. Adjust font size and boldness
In the Font tab, choose an available typeface, set a font size and adjust boldness across five levels. You can also pinch the page to change font size. A larger or heavier typeface can make text easier to distinguish, but it also means fewer words fit on a screen; try small adjustments until the page feels readable without constant turning.
Available fonts and controls can vary by Kindle model. The book itself can affect how text appears, too: Kindle’s Enhanced Typesetting may use features such as kerning, ligatures, hyphenation and line-height normalization. These are rendering features, not additional settings in the five adjustments here. See Amazon’s Enhanced Typesetting documentation.

2. Set line, paragraph, word and character spacing
Open the Layout tab to adjust spacing. More space can make it easier to track lines or distinguish paragraphs; tighter spacing can put more text on each page. Neither choice is a universal improvement. If a page feels crowded, change one spacing control at a time and see whether it helps you follow the text.
3. Change margins, alignment or orientation
The Layout tab also contains margin-size and text-alignment controls. Narrower margins leave more room for text, while wider margins create more open space around it. Try the available alignment choices and, where supported, portrait or landscape orientation. The best combination depends on your preference and the book’s layout.

4. Choose a theme or background color
Theme controls let you choose a page background and save current Font, Layout and More preferences together. On compatible black-and-white Kindle e-readers, Dark Mode inverts text, images and page color across screens. Amazon documents the route as Settings → Screen and brightness → Appearance or Color Style; Quick Actions may also offer the control. Availability depends on the model. Details are in Amazon’s Dark Mode instructions.

5. Choose a reading-progress display
In the More tab, select the reading-progress information you want displayed, and choose whether to show the clock while reading. A progress indicator gives you a quick sense of your place; hiding it keeps the reading screen less busy. Pick the option that suits how you read rather than treating one as the default best choice.
Brightness and warmth are separate controls
If the page is too dim or bright, open Quick Actions or Settings and adjust the brightness scale. Compatible models may also offer brightness and warmth under Screen and brightness; warmth is not available on every Kindle. Consult Amazon’s screen-light instructions for device-specific controls.

Kindle apps use different controls
Kindle reading apps share some concepts with e-reader settings, but their interfaces and available options depend on platform. Amazon’s app documentation covers options including page color, dark-mode behavior tied to Android or iOS device settings, scrolling, margins, themes, Reading Ruler and Word Wise on Android. Do not assume an app instruction applies to a Kindle e-reader, or that every app offers every option. See Amazon’s accessible reading options for Kindle apps.
